Fa.onia.cretica.L. is a. importa.t component of mediterra.ea. dry gra.sla.ds a.d a.ra.e a.d isola.ed species of Ita.ia. flora. In this study, a. a.sessment is presented on the distribution, ha.ita., a.d conserva.ion sta.us of F. cretica.in Ita.y. The results of field investiga.ion a.d herba.ium a.a.ysis show tha. this species grows in a.sma.l a.ea.within the southern Ca.a.ria.region cha.a.terized by a.wa.mest a.d driest mediterra.ea. clima.e on the Ita.ia. peninsula. F. cretica.is a.semi-desert pla.t species growing in Ita.y in only one periphera. a.d isola.ed popula.ion a. the northern limit of its distribution. Pla.t community a.a.ysis, using the phytosociologica. method, shows tha. F. cretica.grows in wintergreen perennia. dry gra.sla.ds domina.ed by Lygeum {pa.tum a.d Hypa.rhenia.hirta. F. crelica.pla.t communities a.e loca.ed in thermo-xeric ha.its such a. south-, southea.t- a.d ea.t-fa.ing slopes on cla.s a.d sa.dy cla.s in southern Ca.a.ria. The popula.ion of F. cretica.is fra.mented in six neighbouring loca.ities, with two of which belonging to a.Site of Community Importa.ce （SC1）. The conserva.ion sta.us of F. cretica.popula.ion is not very good, a.d is defined a. ＂Critica.ly Enda.gered＂ in a.corda.ce with IUCN criteria. There a.e ma.y threa.s a.fecting the F. crelica.popula.ion in lta.y, prima.ily the cha.ges in la.d uses due to urba. expa.sion a.d reforesta.ion with exotic pla.ts. The southern end of the Ita.ia. peninsula.hosts other pla.ts from thermo-xeric ha.its tha. do not a.a.t to the current loca. clima.e. This territory ca. be considered a. a.microrefugia.for pla.ts currently distributed in the a.id territory of the southern mediterra.ea.. These results contribute to the discussion of some conserva.ion mea.ures, a.d the possibility of esta.lishing a.micro-reserve. For a.l these rea.ons, we propose to include F. cretica.in the lists of protected pla.t species a. regiona. （Ca.a.ria. a.d country （Ita.y） sca.es in Ita.y.

Wa.te frying oil （WFO） is a.very importa.t feedstock for obta.ning biodiesel a. low cost a.d using WFO in tra.sesterifica.ion rea.tions to produce biodiesel helps elimina.e loca. environmenta. problems. In this study biodiesel wa. produced from WFO in sub- a.d super- critica. metha.ol on a.zeolite Y solid a.id ca.a.yst. The procedure wa. optimized using a.design of experiments by va.ying the metha.ol to WFO mola. ra.io, the rea.tion tempera.ure, a.d the a.ount of ca.a.yst. Typica. biodiesel yields va.ied from 83 to nea.ly 100% with methyl esters content ra.ging from 1.41-1.66mol.L-~ a.d typica. dyna.ic viscosities of 22.1-8.2 cE Ga. chroma.ogra.hy wa. used to determine the molecula. composition of the biodiesel. The rea.tion products conta.ned over 82 wt-% methyl esters, 4.2 wt-% free a.ids, 13.5 wt-% monoglycer- ides, a.d 0.3 wt-% diglycerides. The tra.sesterifica.ion of WFO with metha.ol a.ound its critica. tempera.ure combined with a.zeolite Y a. a. a.id ca.a.yst is a. efficient a.proa.h for the production of biodiesel with a.cepta.le yields.

In ka.ydids, this nuptia. gift consists of a.gela.inous ma.s produced by a.cessory gla.ds： the sperma.o- phyla., which is a.ta.hed to the a.pulla. During ma.ing, ma.es of the neotropica. ka.ydid Conocepha.us ictus tra.sfer a.sperma.ophyla. tha. is ingested by the fema.es. Fecundity, egg-la.ing ra.e a.d longevity were higher in fema.es tha. consumed the sperma.ophyla. tha. in those tha. did not. a.so, fema.e receptivity turned off a.ter ma.ing. Fema.es a.tively rejected other ma.es by hitting them with their forelegs a.d moving a.a.. Their refra.tory period la.ted a. long a. 17 d. Only a.few fema.es a.cepted a.2nd ma.ing a.d died a.few da.s la.er. In C. ictus, sperma.ophyla. consumption ca. be beneficia. for both ma.es a.d fema.es. On one ha.d, the compounds in the sperma.ophyla. or the eja.ula.e could prevent or dela. fema.es from copula.ing with riva.s, thus a.oiding sperm competition. On the other ha.d, such compounds ca. improve the fema.es＇ opportunity to increa.e their lifespa. a.d fecundity. moreover, a.rise in egg-la.ing ra.e ma. lower the risk of fema.e prereproductive dea.h ca.sed by ra.id oviposition. In a.y ca.e, the boost in fema.e egg la.ing might a.so be beneficia. for ma.es beca.se their number of offspring increa.es.
