PVC wa. first iod.na.ed.using the Cona.t-Finkelstein rea.tion, followed.by the a.plica.ion of the homolytic cond.tions of Minisci to genera.e pyrid.na.ed.PVC with a.va.ying d.gree of substitution. The extent of substitution wa. not high; the rea.tion on 30% iod.na.ed.PVC a.ford.d.a.d.gree of mod.fica.ion no grea.er tha. 3%.

Soluble chloromethyla.ed.polystyrene with a.d.gree of substitution of 89% wa. obta.ned. The Cona.t-Finkelstein rea.tion on the chloromethyla.ed.PS a.ford.d.soluble iod.methyla.ed.polystyrene with a.d.gree of substitution a. high a. 96%. The rea.tion cond.tions of Minisci were employed.to ra.ica.ly pyrid.na.e PS via.its iod.methyla.ed.d.riva.ive. Polyelectrolytes were formed.which could.be converted.to norma. polymers by trea.ment with a.20% a.ueous solution of Na.H.

Conventiona. chloromethyla.ion, pa.a.orma.d.hyd./hyd.ogen chlorid. in a.etic a.id.med.um, wa. a.plied.to 1,2- d.methoxybenzene. Chloroform-soluble poly（3,4-d.methoxy-o-tolylene） wa. obta.ned.with a. intrinsic viscosity of 0.034 d. g^-1. The polymer wa. eva.ua.ed.a. a.cond.nsa.ion red.x polymer precursor formed.by a.Fried.l-Cra.ts rea.tion. Clea.a.e of the methoxy groups present in this polymer resulted.in poly（3,4-d.hyd.oxy-o-tolylene） which ma.ifested.a.grea. a.r-oxid.0}ion resista.ce. The red.x property of the la.ter polymer wa. found.to be 1017 mV by potentiometric titra.ion with 0.05 N ceric a.monium nitra.e a. 25℃. This mid.otentia. wa. compa.ed.to tha. of ca.echol, a.monomeric a.a.ogue, und.r the sa.e titra.ion cond.tions.
