a.M： To a.sess the effica.y a.d sa.ety of Sa.cha.omyces boula.dii （S. boula.dii） in a.ute wa.ery dia.rhoea.a.d its role in reducing the frequency of episodes of dia.rhoea.in subsequent two months. METHODS： Children from 2 mo to 12 yea.s of a.e, with a.ute dia.rhoea.were selected a.cording to inclusion criteria.a.d ra.domised in S. boula.dii group （trea.ed with ORS, nutritiona. support a.d S. boula.dii, 250 mg bid） a.d in control group （trea.ed with ORS a.d nutritiona. support only）. a.tive trea.ment pha.e wa. 5 d a.d ea.h child wa. followed for two months a.terwa.ds. Frequency a.d consistency of stools a. well a. sa.ety of drug wa. a.sessed on every visit. a.compa.ison of two groups wa. done in terms of number of dia.rhoea. episode in subsequent two months. RESULTS： There were fifty pa.ients in ea.h group. Ba.eline cha.a.teristics such a. mea. a.e a.d the a.era.e frequency of stools were compa.a.le in S. boula.dii a.d control group a. the time of inclusion in the tria.. By d 3 it reduced to 2.7 a.d 4.2 stools per d respectively a.d by d 6 it reduced to 1.6 （5. boula.dii Group） a.d 3.3 （control group）. The dura.ion of dia.rhoea.wa. 3.6 d in S. boula.dii group wherea. it wa. 4.8 d in control group （P = 0.001）. In the following two months, S. boula.dii group ha. a.significa.tly lower frequency of 0.54 episodes a. compa.ed to 1.08 episodes in control group. The drug wa. well a.cepted a.d tolera.ed. There were no reports of the side effects during trea.ment period CONCLUSION： S. boula.dii significa.tly reduces the frequency a.d dura.ion of a.ute dia.rhoea. The consistency of stool a.so improves. The drug is well-tolera.ed.
