Soil organic carbon(SOC)and nitrogen(N)are two of the most important indicators for agricultural *** primary objective of this study was to investigate the changes in SOC and N in the deep soil profile(up to 100 cm)and their relationships with crop productivity under the influence of long-term(since 1990)fertilization in the wheat-maize cropping *** included CK(control),NP(inorganic N and phosphorus(P)fertilizers),NPK(inorganic N,P and potassium fertilizers),NPKM(NPK plus manure),and M(manure).Crop yield and the properties of topsoil were measured yearly from 2001 to 2009.C and N contents were measured at five different depths in 2001 and *** results showed that wheat and maize yields decreased between 2001 and 2009 under the inorganic fertilizer(NP and NPK)*** average yield between 2001 and 2009 under the NP,NPK,NPKM,and M treatments(compared with the CK treatment)increased by 38,115,383,and 381%,respectively,for wheat and 348,891,2738,and 1845%,respectively,for *** long-term fertilization treatments significantly changed coarse free particulate(cf POC),fine free particulate(ff POC),intramicroaggregate particulate(i POC),and mineral-associated(m SOC)organic carbon *** the experimental years of 2001 and 2009,soil fractions occurred in the following order for all treatments:m SOC>cf POC>i POC>ff *** fractions were higher under the manure application treatments than under the inorganic fertilization *** to the inorganic fertilization treatments,manure input enhanced the stocks of SOC and total N in the surface layer(0–20 cm)but decreased SOC and N in the deep soil layer(80–100 cm).This reveals the efficiency of manure in increasing yield productivity and decreasing risk of vertical loss of nutrients,especially N,compared to inorganic fertilization *** findings provide opportunities for understanding deep soil C and N dynamics,which could help mitigate climate change impact o

Fuzzy inference system using genetic algorithm and pattern search for predicting roof fall rate in underground coal mines

One of the most dangerous safety hazard in underground coal mines is roof falls during retreat *** falls may cause life-threatening and non-fatal injuries to miners and impede mining and transportation *** a result,a reliable roof fall prediction model is essential to tackle such *** parameters that substantially impact roof falls are ill-defined and intangible,making this an uncertain and challenging research *** National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health assembled a national database of roof performance from 37 coal mines to explore the factors contributing to roof *** acquired for 37 mines is limited due to several restrictions,which increased the likelihood of *** logic is a technique for coping with ambiguity,incompleteness,and ***,In this paper,the fuzzy inference method is presented,which employs a genetic algorithm to create fuzzy rules based on 109 records of roof fall data and pattern search to refine the membership functions of *** performance of the deployed model is evaluated using statistical measures such as the Root-Mean-Square Error,Mean-Absolute-Error,and coefficient of determination(R_(2)).Based on these criteria,the suggested model outperforms the existing models to precisely predict roof fall rates using fewer fuzzy rules.

Variation in Expression of Sub1 Gene and Association with Submergence Stress Related Traits in Advance Rice (Oryza sativaL.) Genotypes as a Tool of Climate Change Adaptation

Floods have now become most detrimental natural catastrophe worldwide due to radical climatic fluxes. Therefore, there is a dire necessity to develop a high yielding rice lines to deal with this scenario. For this purpose, a large scale experiment was conducted including one hundred and fifteen (115) rice genotypes having SUB1 gene imported from International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Philippines, six local cultivars/approved varieties and three high yielding rice varieties i.e. Sabitri, IR6 and NSICRC222 being used as potential varieties in different countries of Asia as susceptible check and IR64-SUB1 as tolerant check. The genotypic screening was performed using two PCR-based DNA markers i.e. ART5 and SC3. Phenotypic screening was conducted in a natural pond to assess the interaction of SUB1 gene in natural stagnant flood water as well as the suitability of introgression of SUB1 gene into approved varieties and elite rice lines. The genotypes were assessed in terms of plant survival percentage, submergence tolerance index, physical condition, stem elongation, number of grains per panicle, thousand grain weight, grain yields and deviations in these traits after submergence stress. The PCR results suggested that both the primers ART5 and SC3 may be used as potential PCR-based markers for molecular screening of rice genotypes for SUB1 QTL. Furthermore, it confirmed the presence of SUB1 gene in all the lines imported from IRRI, while it was absent in all the local cultivars studied. All the genotypes with submergence tolerant gene (SUB1) showed significantly greater tolerance level in submergence stress of 14 days, as compared to other local cultivars/varieties, authenticating the effectiveness of SUB1QTL in conferring submergence tolerance. Significantly different performances of all the SUB1 genotypes in terms of all the studied traits indicate high Genotypic and Genotypic Environment Interaction (GEI) of SUB1QTL. Refined Anam-Net:Lightweight Deep Learning Model for Improved Segmentation Performance of Optic Cup and Disc for Glaucoma Diagnosis

In this work,we aim to introduce some modifications to the Anam-Net deep neural network(DNN)model for segmenting optic cup(OC)and optic disc(OD)in retinal fundus images to estimate the cup-to-disc ratio(CDR).The CDR is a reliable measure for the early diagnosis of *** this study,we developed a lightweight DNN model for OC and OD segmentation in retinal fundus *** DNN model is based on modifications to Anam-Net,incorporating an anamorphic depth embedding *** reduce computational complexity,we employ a fixed filter size for all convolution layers in the encoder and decoder stages as the network *** modification significantly reduces the number of trainable parameters,making the model lightweight and suitable for resource-constrained *** evaluate the performance of the developed model using two publicly available retinal image databases,namely RIM-ONE and *** results demonstrate promising OC segmentation performance across most standard evaluation metrics while achieving analogous results for OD *** used two retinal fundus image databases named RIM-ONE and Drishti-GS that contained 159 images and 101 retinal images,*** OD segmentation using the RIM-ONE we obtain an f1-score(F1),Jaccard coefficient(JC),and overlapping error(OE)of 0.950,0.9219,and 0.0781,***,for OC segmentation using the same databases,we achieve scores of 0.8481(F1),0.7428(JC),and 0.2572(OE).Based on these experimental results and the significantly lower number of trainable parameters,we conclude that the developed model is highly suitable for the early diagnosis of glaucoma by accurately estimating the CDR.

G ×E Analysis of Rice Germplasm and NILs Having Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB) Resistant Genes against Local Isolates of Xanthomonas oryzaeat Diverse Agro-Ecological Zones

Rice is food for more than half of the world population and the most consumable cereal in most of the countries. Pakistan is the fifth largest exporter of rice. However, Bacterial leaf blight (BLB) caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae is the most devastating and serious threat to rice production in many countries of the world including Pakistan. To combat this disease, innate genetic resistance of the plant plays vital role along with being environmentally friendly and economical. In this study, thirty-one (31) Near Isogenic Lines (NILs) having Xa4, xa5, Xa7, xa13 and Xa21 reported BLB tolerant genes and 34 locally developed rice lines were investigated under natural field conditions at three agro-ecologically different locations with highest disease occurrence records (BLB hotspots) viz., Sheikhupura, Hafizabad and Gujranwala, Punjab, Pakistan in order to assess their respective genetic resistance and G × E interactions against the disease. Thirty-one (31) lines were categorized under resistant cluster, twenty-eight (28) were moderately resistant, six (6) were moderately susceptible and one (susceptible check) was in susceptible category. Grouping of different lines/varieties under same cluster shows their significantly similar response against BLB disease in corresponding environment. Among the studied NILs, only one line showed polymorphism for all five resistant genes, two lines had four;seven lines had three genes, seven lines showed di-genic while five lines showed mono-genic polymorphism. These resistant lines with multiple-genes for BLB resistance can be evolved as a new BLB resistant variety and also be utilized as donor parent in breeding programs for developing new cultivars with horizontal resistance against more than one target pathotypes and environments. Xa4 and xa13 were found to deliver significant resistance against the local pathotypes in studied germplasm and NILs.
