Regulated cell death in cancer:from pathogenesis to treatment

Regulated cell death(RCD),including apoptosis,pyroptosis,necroptosis,and ferroptosis,is regulated by a series of evolutionarily conserved pathways,and is required for development and tissue homeostasis.Based on previous genetic and biochemical explorations of cell death subroutines,the characteristics of each are generally considered distinctive.However,recent in-depth studies noted the presence of crosstalk between the different forms of RCD;hence,the concept of PANoptosis appeared.Cancer,a complex genetic disease,is characterized by stepwise deregulation of cell apoptosis and proliferation,with significant morbidity and mortality globally.At present,studies on the different RCD pathways,as well as the intricate relationships between different cell death subroutines,mainly focus on infectious diseases,and their roles in cancer remain unclear.As cancers are characterized by dysregulated cell death and inflammatory responses,most current treatment strategies aim to selectively induce cell death via different RCD pathways in cancer cells.In this review,we describe five types of RCD pathways in detail with respect to tumorigenesis and cancer progression.The potential value of some of these key effector molecules in tumor diagnosis and therapeutic response has also been raised.We then review and highlight recent progress in cancer treatment based on PANoptosis and ferroptosis induced by small-molecule compounds,immune checkpoint inhibitors,and nanoparticles.Together,these findings may provide meaningful evidence to fill in the gaps between cancer pathogenesis and RCD pathways to develop better cancer therapeutic strategies.

Apoptotic mechanism of premature ovarian failure and rescue effect of Traditional Chinese Medicine: a review

Social and environmental factors render premature ovarian failure(POF) as a major cause of decline or loss of female fertility. The natural pregnancy rate of patients with POF is only 5%-10%. Follicular atresia is the main factor in the pathogenesis of POF.Due to the unique ovarian physiological environment and follicular developmental processes, the apoptosis of ovarian granulosa cells and oocytes together cause follicular atresia, which involves the apoptosis-related internal and external pathways.Furthermore, during POF, apoptosis and oxidative stress forms a "vicious circle", which involves a variety of changes between the molecules. The existing pharmaceutical preparations such as gonadal hormones are the basic methods for the treatment of POF, and the curative effect was affirmative;however, it was ineffective after withdrawn, while the long-term application led to adverse reactions. Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) has a history of treating gynecological diseases and infertility and has gained increasing attention. Studies have shown that compounds isolated from herbal medicine exerted a positive effect on follicular atresia caused by cell apoptosis that also improved the POF. The present study reviewed the mechanisms underlying the apoptosis in POF and elaborated the internal mechanism of TCM in the treatment of the condition.

Air Pollution Exposure Based on Nighttime Light Remote Sensing and Multi-source Geographic Data in Beijing

Air pollution is a problem that directly affects human health,the global environment and the climate.The air quality index(AQI)indicates the degree of air pollution and effect on human health;however,when assessing air pollution only based on AQI monitoring data the fact that the same degree of air pollution is more harmful in more densely populated areas is ignored.In the present study,multi-source data were combined to map the distribution of the AQI and population data,and the analyze their pollution population exposure of Beijing in 2018 was analyzed.Machine learning based on the random forest algorithm was adopted to calculate the monthly average AQI of Beijing in 2018.Using Luojia-1 nighttime light remote sensing data,population statistics data,the population of Beijing in 2018 and point of interest data,the distribution of the permanent population in Beijing was estimated with a high precision of 200 m×200 m.Based on the spatialization results of the AQI and population of Beijing,the air pollution exposure levels in various parts of Beijing were calculated using the population-weighted pollution exposure level(PWEL)formula.The results show that the southern region of Beijing had a more serious level of air pollution,while the northern region was less polluted.At the same time,the population was found to agglomerate mainly in the central city and the peripheric areas thereof.In the present study,the exposure of different districts and towns in Beijing to pollution was analyzed,based on high resolution population spatialization data,it could take the pollution exposure issue down to each individual town.And we found that towns with higher exposure such as Yongshun Town,Shahe Town and Liyuan Town were all found to have a population of over 200000 which was much higher than the median population of townships of51741 in Beijing.Additionally,the change trend of air pollution exposure levels in various regions of Beijing in 2018 was almost the same,with the peak value being in winter and the lowest value being in

On Equivalence of Simple Closed Curves in Flat Surfaces

By explicit constructions,we give direct proofs of the following results： for any distinct homotopy classes of simple closed curves α and β in a closed surface of genus g 〉1,there exist a hyperbolic structure X and a holomorphic quadratic differential q on X such that lX（α） = lX（β）,extX（α） = extX（β） and lq（α） = lq（β）,where lX（·）,extX（·） and lq（·） are the hyperbolic length,the extremal length and the quadratic differential length respectively.These imply that there are no equivalent simple closed curves in hyperbolic surfaces or in flat surfaces.

Digitalization of mechanical and physical properties of Singapore Bukit Timah granite rocks based on borehole data from four sites

The Bukit Timah Granite(BTG)formation is widely distributed in the central and northern parts of Singapore Island.The BTG rocks in the formation vary from granite to granodiorite.Several hybrid rocks and dykes are also present in the BTG.The granite is in various states of fracturing and weathering,ranging from residual soils to intact,unweathered fresh rock.This paper presents some mechanical and physical properties of Singapore BTG rocks,based on data from the Factual Geotechnical Reports of more than 200 boreholes from Downtown Line stage II(DTL2)sites of Cashew,Hillview,Bukit Panjang and Beauty World.The variations of the parameters,including the unconfined compressive strength(UCS),the point-load strength index(I_(s50)),the Cerchar abrasivity index(CAI),and the slake-durability index are derived from laboratory tests on samples from borelogs of different depths.The empirical correlations between the UCS and I_(s50) and between the CAI and the strength parameters(UCS and I_(s50))are derived and validated against the commonly adopted equations.Statistical information,including the average values,the standard deviations,and the coefficients of variation,are provided for these parameters.These statistics provide a useful reference for numerical simulations and future projects involving BTG rocks.

Organic Near-Infrared Luminescent Materials Based on Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer Process

Organic near-infrared(NIR)luminescent materials have captured intense research interest owing to their potential applications in optical communication,data storage,bioimaging,sensing and night vision.Excited state intramolecular proton transfer(ESIPT)process with absorption in normal form while emission in tautomer form can lead to a distinct redshift emission,based on which,a lot of organic NIR luminescent materials were designed.Because of attractive features such as ultrahigh sensitivity to the surroundings,large Stokes shift,and inherent four level system,ESIPT based NIR luminescent materials are supposed to be ideal fluorescent probes and gain materials.In this review,first,organic near-infrared luminescent materials based on ESIPT process are summarized according to the core structures.Second,recent advances of ESIPT-based organic near-infrared fluorescent probes and organic NIR lasers are reviewed.Finally,the current challenges and prospects of ESIPT-based organic NIR luminescent materials are introduced.
