Changing human-environment interactions in medium mountains:the Apuseni Mts(Romania)as a case study

The study of human-environment relationships in mountain areas is important for both theoretical and practical reasons, as many mountain areas suffer similar problems, such as depopulation, unemployment and natural hazards. Medium mountains constitute a special case within mountains, because they are more populated but less attractive as tourist destinations than high mountains. In this context, the Apuseni Mts(Romania) are considered as a case study. In this paper, we apply GIS-based, quantitative methods to characterize the strength and dynamics of human-environment interactions, taking into consideration some environmental factors(elevation, relative height, slope, river distance, lithology, land cover, natural attractions) as well as historical population and recent tourism data. We found that population density has strong(r2>0.8) relationships with all relief factors(elevation, relative height, slope, river distance), and that best-fit functions are nonlinear. We outlined the varying demographic scenarios by elevation zones and interpreted the historically switching sign of population change versus elevation relationship. We demonstrated that lithology also has an impact on the spatial distribution of population, although it is notindependent from the relief effect. The land cover of the mainly cultural landscape is very strongly correlated with relief parameters(especially slope), which suggests good adaptation. We pointed out the dominance of karst objects in the natural tourism potential of the Apuseni Mts and also explored further components of real tourism(spas, heritage, towns). Finally, we concluded that the environmental settings investigated do in fact constrain the spatial framework of society, but socio-economic changes in history can be explained from the side of society, which conforms to the theory of cultural possibilism.

Paracetamol （PCM） was crystallized from an isopropanol （IPA） solution containing various small amounts of metacetamol as an additive. The effect on the nucleation kinetics was studied by measuring the induction time to nucleation and the metastable zone width using focused beam reflectance measurements （FBRM） and attenuated total reflectance （ATR-UV/Vis） spectroscopy. Both the induction time and the metastable zone width were expressed as functions of the additive concentration. Small amounts ofmetacetamol （1-4 tool-%） were found to cause significant inhibition to the nucleation by extending both the induction time and the metastable zone width. A progressive change in the morphology of the paracetamol crystals from tabular to columnar habit was observed with increasing metacetamol concentration. The solvent also had a significant effect on the size of the paracetamol crystals as smaller crystals were obtained in IPA than in aqueous solution. The dissolution rate of paracetamol was improved by the incorporation of metacetamol with 4 tool-% having the most effect. A supersaturation control （SSC） approach was implemented for the PCM-IPA system with and without metacetamol in an attempt to control and obtain larger metacetamol-doped paraeetamol crystals.

This paper presents both results of a numerical modeling and an experimental study of the influence of various parameters on the radiation characteristics of barrier discharge lamp working in He/D2O *** is obtained that the intensity of ultraviolet radiation is a non-monotonic function of both the water and the helium *** experimental results also show that the increase of both the discharge voltage and the discharge pulse frequency leads to the increase of radiation *** comparison between the experimentally obtained data and the results of numerical modeling allows us to define the mechanism controlling the ultraviolet radiation in He/D2O mixture at various parameters.

In this paper,a cell average technique(CAT)based parameter estimation method is proposed for cooling crystallization involved with particle growth,aggregation and breakage,by establishing a more efficient and accurate solution in terms of the automatic differentiation(AD)*** overcome the deficiency of CAT that demands high computation cost for implementation,a set of ordinary differential equations(ODEs)entailed from CAT based discretized population balance equation(PBE)are solved by using the AD based high-order Taylor ***,an AD based trust-region reflective(TRR)algorithm and another interior-point(IP)algorithm are established for estimating the kinetic parameters associated with particle growth,aggregation and *** a result,the estimation accuracy can be further improved while the computation cost can be significantly reduced,compared to the existing *** examples from the literature are used to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of the AD-based CAT,TRR and IP algorithms in comparison with the existing ***,seeded batch cooling crystallization experiments ofβform L-glutamic acid are performed to validate the proposed method.

Fractals are a basic tool for phenomenologicalty describing natural ob- jects having a high degree of temporal or spatial variability. From a physical point of view the fractal properties of natural systems can also be interpreted by using the standard formalism of thermodynamical fluctuations. We introduce and analyze the fractal dimension of the Intra-Day-Variability （IDV） light-curves of BL Lac objects, in the optical, radio and X-ray bands. A general description of the fluctuation spec- trum of these systems based on general thermodynamical principles is also proposed. Based on the general fractal properties of a given physical system, we also introduce the predictability index for the IDV light curves. We have explicitly determined the fractal dimension for the R-band observations of five blazars, as well as for the ra- dio band observations of the compact extragalactic radio source J 1128＋5925 and of several X-ray sources. Our results show that the fractal dimension of the optical and X-ray observations indicates an almost pure ＂Brownian noise＂（random walk） spectrum, with a very low predictability index, while in the radio band the predictability index is much higher. We have also studied the spectral properties of the IDV light curves and we have shown that their spectral index is very closely correlated with the corresponding fractal dimension.
