Kinetic parameter estimation for cooling crystallization process based on cell average technique and automatic differentiation

In this paper,a cell average technique(CAT)based parameter estimation method is proposed for cooling crystallization involved with particle growth,aggregation and breakage,by establishing a more efficient and accurate solution in terms of the automatic differentiation(AD)*** overcome the deficiency of CAT that demands high computation cost for implementation,a set of ordinary differential equations(ODEs)entailed from CAT based discretized population balance equation(PBE)are solved by using the AD based high-order Taylor ***,an AD based trust-region reflective(TRR)algorithm and another interior-point(IP)algorithm are established for estimating the kinetic parameters associated with particle growth,aggregation and *** a result,the estimation accuracy can be further improved while the computation cost can be significantly reduced,compared to the existing *** examples from the literature are used to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of the AD-based CAT,TRR and IP algorithms in comparison with the existing ***,seeded batch cooling crystallization experiments ofβform L-glutamic acid are performed to validate the proposed method.

Urban Building Energy Modelling(UBEM)allows us to simulate buildings’energy performances at a larger ***,creating a reliable urban-scale energy model of new or existing urban areas can be difficult since the model requires overly detailed input data,which is not necessarily publicly *** calibration is a necessary step to reduce the uncertainties and simulation results in order to develop a reliable and accurate *** to the concerns over computational resources and the time needed for calibration,a sensitivity analysis is often required to identify the key parameters with the most substantial impact before the calibration is deployed in ***,we study the sensitivity of uncertain input parameters that affect the annual heating and cooling energy demand by employing an urban-scale energy model,*** goal is to determine the relative influence of each set of input parameters and their interactions on heating and cooling loads for various building forms under different ***,we conduct a global sensitivity analysis for annual cooling and heating consumption under different climate *** upon this,we investigate the changes in input sensitivity to different building forms,focusing on the indices with the largest Total-order ***,we determine First-order indices and Total-order effects of each input parameter included in the urban building energy *** also provide tables,showing the important parameters on the annual cooling and heating demand for each climate and each building *** find that if the desired calibration process require to decrease the number of the inputs to save the computational time and cost,calibrating 5 parameters;temperature set-point,infiltration rate,floor U-value,*** U-value and roof U-value would impact the results over 55%for any climate and any building form.

Real-world challenges for multi-agent reinforcement learning ingrid-interactive buildings

Building upon prior research that highlighted the need for standardizing environments for building controlresearch, and inspired by recently introduced challenges for real life reinforcement learning (RL) control, herewe propose a non-exhaustive set of nine real world challenges for RL control in grid-interactive buildings(GIBs). We argue that research in this area should be expressed in this framework in addition to providing astandardized environment for repeatability. Advanced controllers such as model predictive control (MPC) andRL control have both advantages and disadvantages that prevent them from being implemented in real worldproblems. Comparisons between the two are rare, and often biased. By focusing on the challenges, we caninvestigate the performance of the controllers under a variety of situations and generate a fair comparison.

Pixel super-resolution using wavelength scanning

Undersampling and pixelation affect a number of imaging systems, limiting the resolution of the acquired images, whichbecomes particularly significant for wide-field microscopy applications. Various super-resolution techniques have been implemented to mitigate this resolution loss by utilizing sub-pixel displacements in the imaging system, achieved, for example, byshifting the illumination source, the sensor array and/or the sample, followed by digital synthesis of a smaller effective pixel bymerging these sub-pixel-shifted low-resolution images. Herein, we introduce a new pixel super-resolution method that is basedon wavelength scanning and demonstrate that as an alternative to physical shifting/displacements, wavelength diversity can beused to boost the resolution of a wide-field imaging system and significantly increase its space-bandwidth product. We confirmedthe effectiveness of this new technique by improving the resolution of lens-free as well as lens-based microscopy systems anddeveloped an iterative algorithm to generate high-resolution reconstructions of a specimen using undersampled diffraction patterns recorded at a few wavelengths covering a narrow spectrum (10–30 nm). When combined with a synthetic-aperture-baseddiffraction imaging technique, this wavelength-scanning super-resolution approach can achieve a half-pitch resolution of250 nm, corresponding to a numerical aperture of ~ 1.0, across a large field of view (420 mm^(2)). We also demonstrated theeffectiveness of this approach by imaging various biological samples, including blood and Papanicolaou smears. Compared withdisplacement-based super-resolution techniques, wavelength scanning brings uniform resolution improvement in all directionsacross a sensor array and requires significantly fewer measurements. This technique would broadly benefit wide-field imagingapplications that demand larger space-bandwidth products.

Fractal dimension and thermodynamic fluctuation properties of IDV light curves

Fractals are a basic tool for phenomenologicalty describing natural ob- jects having a high degree of temporal or spatial variability. From a physical point of view the fractal properties of natural systems can also be interpreted by using the standard formalism of thermodynamical fluctuations. We introduce and analyze the fractal dimension of the Intra-Day-Variability （IDV） light-curves of BL Lac objects, in the optical, radio and X-ray bands. A general description of the fluctuation spec- trum of these systems based on general thermodynamical principles is also proposed. Based on the general fractal properties of a given physical system, we also introduce the predictability index for the IDV light curves. We have explicitly determined the fractal dimension for the R-band observations of five blazars, as well as for the ra- dio band observations of the compact extragalactic radio source J 1128＋5925 and of several X-ray sources. Our results show that the fractal dimension of the optical and X-ray observations indicates an almost pure ＂Brownian noise＂（random walk） spectrum, with a very low predictability index, while in the radio band the predictability index is much higher. We have also studied the spectral properties of the IDV light curves and we have shown that their spectral index is very closely correlated with the corresponding fractal dimension.

Ensemble Transform Sensitivity Method for Adaptive Observations

The Ensemble Transform（ET） method has been shown to be useful in providing guidance for adaptive observation *** predicts forecast error variance reduction for each possible deployment using its corresponding transformation matrix in an ensemble *** this paper,a new ET-based sensitivity（ETS） method,which calculates the gradient of forecast error variance reduction in terms of analysis error variance reduction,is proposed to specify regions for possible adaptive *** is a first order approximation of the ET;it requires just one calculation of a transformation matrix,increasing computational efficiency（60%-80%reduction in computational cost）.An explicit mathematical formulation of the ETS gradient is derived and *** the ET and ETS methods are applied to the Hurricane Irene（2011） case and a heavy rainfall case for *** numerical results imply that the sensitive areas estimated by the ETS and ET are ***,ETS is much more efficient,particularly when the resolution is higher and the number of ensemble members is larger.

Partition of Forecast Error into Positional and Structural Components

Weather manifests in spatiotemporally coherent *** forecasts hence are affected by both positional and structural or amplitude *** has been long recognized by practicing forecasters(cf.,e.g.,Tropical Cyclone track and intensity errors).Despite the emergence in recent decades of various objective methods for the diagnosis of positional forecast errors,most routine verification or statistical post-processing methods implicitly assume that forecasts have no positional *** Forecast Error Decomposition(FED)method proposed in this study uses the Field Alignment technique which aligns a gridded forecast with its verifying analysis *** total error is then partitioned into three orthogonal components:(a)large scale positional,(b)large scale structural,and(c)small scale error *** use of FED is demonstrated over a month-long MSLP data *** expected,positional errors are often characterized by dipole patterns related to the displacement of features,while structural errors appear with single extrema,indicative of magnitude *** most important result of this study is that over the test period,more than 50%of the total mean sea level pressure forecast error variance is associated with large scale positional *** importance of positional error in forecasts of other variables and over different time periods remain to be explored.

According to magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)studies,brain white matter(WM)abnormalities have been suggested to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder(MDD)and related suicidal ***,MRI findings may be limited by low spatial resolution;therefore,an important contribution to the understanding of the role and significance of WM alterations derived by the development of the most recent magnetic resonance techniques,such as diffusion tensor imaging(DTI).Several DTI studies reported an association between altered WM integrity and MDD/suicidal *** WM abnormalities may be located in neural circuits critically implicated in emotional processes and mood regulation resulting in enhanced vulnerability to psychiatric *** abnormalities detected using DTI may contribute to functional deficits and help to clarify the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying MDD as well as suicidal *** a clinical point of view,research also suggested that affective temperaments may play a relevant role in the psychopathological characteristics of mood disorders,clinical trajectory of episodes and polarity,long‑term outcome and ***,only few studies investigated the association between affective temperaments and WM abnormalities and discussed their possible implications in patients with MDD and suicidal *** a comprehensive search of Medline database,the aim of the present study was to critically review the current literature on the association between WM alterations as assessed by MRI and DTI techniques,affective temperaments,MDD and suicidal behavior.
