Biochemical and microbial soil functioning after application of the insecticide imidacloprid

Imidacloprid is one of the most commonly used insecticides in agricultural practice, and its application poses a potential risk for soil microorganisms. The objective of this study was to assess whether changes in the structure of the soil microbial community after imidacloprid application at the field rate（FR, 1 mg/kg soil） and 10 times the FR（10 × FR, 10 mg/kg soil）may also have an impact on biochemical and microbial soil functioning. The obtained data showed a negative effect by imidacloprid applied at the FR dosage for substrate-induced respiration（SIR）, the number of total bacteria, dehydrogenase（DHA）, both phosphatases（PHOS-H and PHOS-OH）, and urease（URE） at the beginning of the experiment. In 10 × FR treated soil, decreased activity of SIR, DHA, PHOS-OH and PHOS-H was observed over the experimental period. Nitrifying and N2-fixing bacteria were the most sensitive to imidacloprid. The concentration of NO3-decreased in both imidacloprid-treated soils,whereas the concentration of NH4＋in soil with 10 × FR was higher than in the *** of the bacterial growth strategy revealed that imidacloprid affected the r- or K-type bacterial classes as indicated also by the decreased eco-physiological（EP） *** affected the physiological state of culturable bacteria and caused a reduction in the rate of colony formation as well as a prolonged time for growth. Principal component analysis showed that imidacloprid application significantly shifted the measured parameters, and the application of imidacloprid may pose a potential risk to the biochemical and microbial activity of soils.

Response of soil catalase activity to chromium contamination

The impact of chromium（Ⅲ） and （Ⅵ） forms on soil catalase activity was presented. The Orthic Podzol, Haplic Phaeozem and Mollic Gleysol from different depths were used in the experiment. The soil samples were amended with solution of Cr（Ⅲ） using CrCl3, and with Cr（Ⅵ） using K2Cr2O7 in the concentration range from 0 to 20 mg/kg, whereas the samples without the addition of chromium served as control. Catalase activity was assayed by one of the commonly used spectrophotometric methods. As it was demonstrated in the experiment, both Cr（Ⅲ） and Cr（Ⅵ） have an ability to reduce soil catalase activity. A chromium dosage of 20 mg/kg caused the inhibition of catalase activity and the corresponding contamination levels ranged from 75% to 92% for Cr（Ⅲ） and 68% to 76% for Cr（Ⅵ）, with relation to the control. Catalase activity reached maximum in the soil material from surface layers （0-25 cm）, typically characterized by the highest content of organic matter creating favorable conditions for microorganisms.

Neocosmopolitan distributions of invertebrate aquatic invasive species due to euryhaline geographic history and human-mediated dispersal:Ponto-Caspian versus other geographic origins

Influence of preoperative astigmatism on corneal biomechanics and accurate intraocular pressure measurement after micro-incision phacoemulsification

AIM: To define the corneal hysteresis(CH), corneal resistance factor(CRF), Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure(IOPg) and corneal compensated intraocular pressure(IOPcc) prior to and following coaxial micro-incision phacoemulsification in patients with corneal astigmatism. METHODS: Of 97 patients with cataracts were enrolled in the study. Group 1 included patients with corneal astigmatism(K1-K2) values of K1-K2<+1.0 D, and group 2 with values of K1-K2 ≥+1.0 D and ≤+2.25 D. Coaxial micro-incision phacoemulsification of a corneal incision of 2.0 mm with intraocular lens(IOL) implantation was performed. CH, CRF, IOPg, IOPcc, waveform score(WS) were measured preoperatively and one week, one month postoperatively using an Ocular Response Analyzer. Axial length(AXL) was calculated by Tomey Optical Biometer OA ***: Group 1 consisted of 51 patients with mean corneal astigmatism value of +0.49±0.25 D. Group 2 included 46 patients with astigmatism of +1.43±0.43 D. In group 1, CRF(t=2.68, P<0.05), CH(t=2.64, P<0.05) and WS(t=3.51, P<0.05) were significantly lower one week postoperatively, when compared to the preoperative values. CRF significantly decreased(t=3.61, P<0.05) when measured one month following the surgery. In group 2 CH(t=5.92, P<0.05), and WS(t=3.96, P<0.05) were significantly lowered one week after cataract surgery. Moreover, we observed a significant decrease in IOPg(t=2.24, P<0.05), CRF(t=5.05, P<0.05) and CH(t=2.31, P<0.05) one month after phacoemulsification. There was no statistically significant(t=-0.83, P=0.41) difference in AXL between study ***: CRF, CH and IOPg are reduced in patients with preoperative corneal astigmatism equal or higher than +1.0 D and lower than +2.25 D. Hence, bias of IOPg measurement in these patients may cause underestimation of the real IOP both before and after cataract surgery. The measurement of IOPcc allows the precise assessment of IOP pre-and postoperatively, independently on corneal astigmatism,

MicroRNAs （miRNAs） are small RNA molecules （～21-24 nt） that play a key role in eukaryotic gene expression regulation. In plants, the majority of microRNAs are encoded by independent transcription units transcribed by RNA polymerase II. Primary transcripts （pri-miRNAs） of miRNA genes （MIRs） undergo extensive co-transcriptional/post-transcriptional processing to generate mature miRNAs.

Corneal biomechanical changes and intraocular pressure in patients with thyroid orbitopathy

AIM：To determine the relevance of the objective parameters addressing the altered biomechanical properties of cornea for glaucoma monitoring in patients with mild or moderate thyroid associated orbitopathy（TAO）,and in healthy individuals.· METHODS：Twenty-five patients with TAO（group 1）and 25 healthy adults（group 2） were included to the *** groups were of a similar age and the ratio women：*** each patient,the following parameters of both eyes were measured with ocular response analyzer（ORA）：corneal hysteresis（CH）,corneal resistance factor（CRF）,Goldmann correlated intraocular pressure（IOPg） and corneal compensated intraocular pressure（IOPcc）.In both groups participating in our study,all measurements were performed within minutes to reduce the diurnal effects.· RESULTS：The mean age in group 1 was 56±11y and76%were women,24%were *** mean age in group 2 was 64±11y and 68%were women,32%were *** correlated negatively with IOPg in group 1（r^2=0.10,P 〈0.05）.IOPg strongly correlated with IOPcc in both groups（group 1：r^2=0.79,P〈0.0001;group 2：r^2=0.85,P〈0.0001）.There was positive correlation between CRF and IOPg in group 1（r^2=0.12,P〈0.05） and in group 2（r^2=0.31,P〈0.0001）.Statistical analysis revealed no significant correlation between CRF and IOPcc in group 1（r^2=0.009,P 〉0.05） and also no significant correlation in group 2（r^2=0.04,P〉0.05）.CRF mean value in group 2（11.51±1.72 mm Hg） was higher than in group 1（10.85±1.45 mm Hg）（P〈0.05）.IOPg strongly correlated with IOPcc in both groups（group 1：r^2=0.79,P〈0.0001;group 2：r^2=0.85,P 〈0.0001）.There was also strong correlation between CRF and CH in both populations：group 1：（r^2=0.58,P〈0.0001）,group 2：（r^2=0.41,P 〈0.0001）.· CONCLUSION：Biomechanical parameters of cornea,as quantified by CH and CRF,and measured together with IOPcc,precisely reveal glaucoma staging in TAO and thus are reliable for diagnosing and follow-up in clinical practice. 〈/tr〉

An Influence of Multiple Drying/Rewetting Cycles upon the Respiration of Organic Forest Soil

It is already known that repeating cycles of drying and rewetting decrease the metabolic activity of the soil. The aim of this paper is to explain on the basis of a laboratory experiment how the respiratory processes of organic soil collected from the forest ecosystem typical for a moderate climate are changing during ten consecutive events of watering, and how alters the relationship between changing humidity of the soil and oxygen consumption/carbon dioxide emission. After 10 cycles, the respiration decreases by 2.4 times however amounts of excreted carbon dioxide and consumed oxygen do not differ between cycles 9 and 10. In successive DRW cycles also the relationship between oxygen consumption/carbon dioxide excretion and humidity level changes. This relationship is logarithmic and the analysis of subsequent regressions indicates the direction of those changes. In successive cycles the value of β coefficient (slope) decreases, and both the values of β and coefficient R2 are always higher for oxygen consumption that for carbon dioxide excretion. This indicates that processes involving oxygen consumption are always more sensitive to fluctuations of humidity than processes producing carbon dioxide. The optimum of respiration declines in successive DRW cycles.
