Using simulation to train orthopaedic trainees in non-technical skills: A pilot study

AIM: To enhance non-technical skills and to analyse participant's experience of a course tailored for orth-opaedic ***: A Delphi technique was used to develop a course in human factors specific to orthopaedic residents. Twenty-six residents(six per course) participated in total with seven course facilitators all trained in Crisis Resource Management providing structured feedback. Six scenarios recreated challenging real-life situations using high-fidelity mannequins and simulated patients. Environments included a simulated operating suite, clinic room and ward setting. All were undertaken in a purpose built simulation suite utilising actors, mock operating rooms, mock clinical rooms and a high fidelity adult patient simulator organised through a simulation control room. Participants completed a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire(strongly disagree to strongly agree) before and after the course. This assessed their understanding of non-technical skills, scenario validity, relevance to orthopaedic training and predicted impact of the course on future practice. A course evaluation questionnaire was also completed to assess participants' feedback on the value and quality of the course ***: Twenty-six orthopaedic residents participated(24 male, 2 female; post-graduation 5-10 years), mean year of residency program 2.6 out of 6 years required in the United Kingdom. Pre-course questionnaires showedthat while the majority of candidates recognised the importance of non-technical(NT) skills in orthopaedic training they demonstrated poor understanding of non-technical skills and their role. This improved significantly after the course(Likert score 3.0-4.2) and the perceived importance of these skills was reported as good or very good in 100%. The course was reported as enjoyable and provided an unthreatening learning environment with the candidates placing particular value on the learning opportunity provided by reflecting on their performance. Male reproductive development is a complex biological process which includes the formation of the stamen with differentiated anther tissues, in which microspores/pollens are generated, then anther dehiscence and subsequently pollination. Stamen specification and anther development involve a number of extraordinary events such as meristem transition, cell division and differentiation, cell to cell communication, etc., which need the cooperative interaction of sporophytic and gametophytic genes. The advent of various tools for rice functional gene identification, such as complete genome sequence, genome-wide microarrays, collections of mutants, has greatly facilitated our understanding of mechanisms of rice stamen specification and anther development. Male sterile lines are critical for hybrid rice breeding, therefore understanding these processes will not only contribute greatly to the basic knowledge of crop developmental biology, but also to the development of new varieties for hybrid rice breeding in the future.

Real-Time H.265/HEVC Intra Encoding with a Configurable Architecture on FPGA Platform

This paper proposes a flexible design scheme for H.265/HEVC encoding based on FPGA, which allows an easy incorporation of a variety of algorithms applied to different scenarios. In particular, we present an H.265/HEVC intra encoder as an instantiation of our proposed scheme. The key idea is to develop an encoder system by configuring basic Processing elements(PEs) of fundamental algorithms. Our intra encoder using the flexible framework is structured with fourstage CTU based pipeline. Pixel-level PEs are designed to unify the intra prediction of 35 modes and a multiscale compatible transform array is proposed to process variable size transform. 32 PEs are paralleled for intra mode decision to support 35 combinations of modes and partitions. In the reconstruction stage, 16 PEs are paralleled for intra prediction and a 16 × 16 multiplier array is configured for transforms of variable sizes with a constant 16 pixels/cycle throughput. Implementation results show that our proposed architecture costs about63 K Lookup tables and 62 KB on-chip memories on Xilinx Kintex-7 platform with the maximum working frequency at 175 MHz, which is sufficient for real-time encoding of 1920 × 1080 @60 fps video at 160 MHz. The flexibility and extension capability of our framework provides a great potential for future FPGA solutions serving for different purposes.

Bugs beneath the surface： the functional significance of soil macroinvertebrates to landscape health in Australia＇s tropical savannas

Soil macroinvertebrates play an important role in sustaining production and biodiversity in Australia＇ s tropical savannas. For example, termites, through their foraging and nesting activities, recycle nutrients and carbon and produce soil pores that facilitate water infiltration. The challenge ahead is to quantitatively understand the relationships and processes that drive this. What roles do different species and functional groups of macroinvertebrates play in various landscape processes？ What are the effects of different land management practices （e.g., domestic cattle grazing, fire） on these relationships, and the consequences for landscape health？ This paper presents preliminary results from studies in northern Australia, that examine the effects of land condition and domestic cattle grazing on soil macroinvertebrates, and the potential for termites to be used as a tool to restore soil function in degraded areas. In northern Australia, increased degradation seems to be associated with declines in the diversity and activity of macroinvertebrates. Termites appear to be one of the most resilient groups, with some species capable of maintaining activity in degraded landscapes.

Hybridisation on coral reefs and the conservation of evolutionary novelty

Hybridisation was traditionally considered rare on coral reefs. However, a rapid increase in hybrid studies over the last 20 years has revealed that hybridisation on coral reefs is common and widespread. In this review, we summarise the growing body of evidence arising from studies on stony corals and reef fishes to verify the occurrence of hybridisatiori, and we examine the influence hybridisation has had on the enormous level of biodiversity present on coral reefs. We discuss the challenges of dis- tinguishing hybridisation from alternative hypotheses （e.g. incomplete lineage sorting）. This review also explores the evolutio- nary consequences of hybridisation, which range from increasing genetic diversity and the production of novel lineages that may outperform the parent species, to reverse speciation and extinction by genetic swamping. Instances of hybridisation can be natural or occur as a result of human impacts （e.g. habitat degradation） and distinguishing between these two very different causal me- chanisms is important for management. Currently, the legislative status of hybrids is unclear and hybrids are rarely protected in conservation programs. Failing to adequately manage hybridisation and hybrid lineages may lead to potential losses of evolutio- nary novelty, declines in phylogenetic diversity or species extinctions. To conserve existing coral reef biodiversity, and the processes that generate biodiversity, conservation policies must be re-defined and instances of hybridisation must be assessed and managed on a case-by-case basis [Current Zoology 61 （1）： 132 145, 2015].

Anther and pollen development:A conserved developmental pathway

Pollen development is a critical step in plant development that is needed for successful breeding and seed formation. Manipulation of male fertility has proved a useful trait for hybrid breeding and increased crop yield. However, although there is a good understanding developing of the molecular mechanisms of anther and pollen anther development in model species, such as Arabidopsis and rice, little is known about the equivalent processes in important crops. Nevertheless the onset of increased genomic information and genetic tools is facilitating translation of information from the models to crops, such as barley and wheat; this will enable increased understanding and manipulation of these pathways for agricultural improvement.

UnionPay Payment Scheme Based on Controlled Quantum Teleportation

We propose a UnionPay payment scheme based on controlled quantum teleportation in which the whole process is realized through correlation of the three-particle entangled state, controlled quantum teleportation, and the physical property of quantum mechanics. Combined with some typical quantum key distribution protocols, the proposed UnionPay payment scheme with unconditional security(information theory security)overcomes the limitation of computational security generally existing in traditional UnionPay payment systems.

BACKGROUND Sleep dysfunction is a common problem in people with schizophrenia,and side effects of treatment often exacerbate metabolic and cardiovascular risk and may induce extrapyramidal side ***(N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine)is an endogenously produced hormone which has demonstrated direct and indirect antioxidant and neuroprotective *** studies have explored the use of exogenous melatonin in improving sleep outcomes in the general population,yet indications for use in schizophrenia are *** To synthesize the evidence from clinical trials investigating prescribed melatonin as an adjunctive therapy in patients with *** A systematic literature review of MEDLINE(Ovid),Embase,PsychINFO,and PubMed on the 27/08/20;and CINAHL and Cochrane Library databases,was *** criteria were:a peer-reviewed clinical trial published in English;included a group of patients with schizophrenia;used melatonin as an adjunctive therapy;and reported any outcome of any *** criteria were:neurodegenerative diseases,primary sleep disorders,co-morbid substance use or animal *** Fifteen studies were included in the current review with the following primary outcomes:sleep(n=6),metabolic profile(n=3),tardive dyskinesia(n=3),cognitive function(n=2)and benzodiazepine discontinuation(n=1).CONCLUSION Adjunctive melatonin therapy has some positive outcomes for sleep,metabolic profile and tardive dyskinesia in patients with *** beneficial effect of melatonin was observed on outcomes of cognition or benzodiazepine *** studies utilizing larger samples and investigations specifically comparing the effect of melatonin as adjunctive therapy with different antipsychotics in patients with schizophrenia are required.
