Background: Chronic low back pain is a leading cause of morbidity and disability globally. Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) tend to be more affected, with chronic low back pain (CLBP) being among the leading presenting complaints at specialist consultation. The exact burden of this disease is sparingly known in our setting. Objective: To evaluate the burden of chronic low back pain at the Yaounde Central Hospital. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study for a period of 3 months, from March 2022 to May 2022. After obtaining ethical clearance and research authorisations, data was collected using structured questionnaires from patients with chronic low back pain presenting at the Yaounde Central Hospital during the aforementioned time frame. This data was then tabulated with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 23.0), and disability was assessed using the modified Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire and the Oswestry Disability Index. Data analysis was done using the International Business Machines Statistical Package for Social Sciences (IBM-SPSS) VERSION 23.0. Results: 115 cases of CLBP were included. The mean age was 52.62 years, and the sex ratio was 0.3. The average monthly income was less than 50,000 frs CFA, in 37.4% of cases. In 57.9%, patients had a job that involved physical labour. The patients had a secondary level of education in 40.9%, and alcohol consumption was observed in 36%. The average number of days of a work stoppage due to LBP was 12.75 days (±12SD), and the median duration of CLBP was 7.15 (7.5SD) years. The median pain intensity was 7 (±2SD), with leg pain and sensory neuropathy observed in 67.8% and 63.5% respectively. Lumbar X-ray was done in 45.2% and revealed lumbar osteoarthrosis in 62.4%. Hypertension as a comorbidity was observed in 26.1%. Medical treatment was used at least once in 98.3% of cases. From a harmonized structural map at the scale of a portion of SW Burkina Faso (90 × 80 km2), we targeted prospective zones on the basis of structural criteria and structure-geology relationships. The map was constructed from an aeromagnetic image, and the geology was deduced from old geological maps. The procedure involved extracting the magnetic fabric and deducing the deformation gradients, which led to the identification of shear zones. Analysis and interpretation of the structural geometry of the obtained structural pattern led us to target areas of interference between structures or geology-structures interplays, which are conducive to the deposition of metallic elements. The subsequent overlay of known gold prospects and deposits documented in the region revealed the validity of the predefined prospects. This result reinforces the applicability of the methodology as a first-order regional approach to mineral exploration.

Prognostic Factors for Operated Traumatic Brain Injury at the Yaounde Emergency Center

Introduction: Head injuries constitute a public health problem in Cameroon and everywhere else in the world. They represent 23% of admissions to the Yaounde emergency center (CURY), which is a center exclusively dedicated, since 2014, to emergency care in Yaounde. In the management of trauma brain injuries at CURY, several are operated on. However, to date, no evaluation of these operated patients has yet been made. Goals: The objective of this study was to highlight the prognostic factors in patients operated for TBI at CURY. Methodology: We conducted a descriptive study whose data collection was done retrospectively over 2 years (01 January 2021 to 31 december 2022) at CURY. Data was collected from the registers of operative reports. Results: We enrolled 105 medical reports of patients who were victims of TBI operated on. The male gender predominated with a sex ratio of 3/1. The average age of the patients was 37.5 ± 18.83 years. Public road accidents were the leading cause of TBI in 75.2% of cases. The means of transport of the victims were mostly non-medical 97.1%. 45.7% of patients were admitted in less than 6 hours following injury. The initial clinical evaluation found 45.8% of patients with a Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) between [14, 15], and 13.2% of patients had a GCS 8. The indications for surgery were extradural hematoma (30%), followed by acute subdural hematoma (24%). The major complication was postoperative infection (25%). The mortality rate of the series was 7.9%. Poor prognostic factors were the depth of the coma on admission, advanced age and postoperative complications. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that most patients operated on for TBI at CURY had a favorable outcome. The poor prognostic factors were the depth of the coma on admission, advanced age, postoperative complications and comorbidities.

Vegetation ecosystem simulation and visualisation are challenging topics involving multidisciplinary aspects. In this paper, we present a new generic frame for the simulation of natural phenomena through manageable and interacting models. It focuses on the functional growth of large vegetal ecosystems, showing coherence for scales ranging from the individual plant to communities and with a particular attention to the effects of water resource competition between plants. The proposed approach is based on a model of plant growth in interaction with the environmental conditions. These are deduced from the climatic data （light, temperature, rainfall） and a model of soil hydrological budget. A set of layers is used to store the water resources and to build the interfaces between the environmental data and landscape components： temperature, rain, light, altitude, lakes, plant positions, biomass, cycles, etc. At the plant level, the simulation is performed for each individual by a structural-functional growth model, interacting with the plant＇s environment. Temperature is spatialised, changing according to altitude, and thus locally controls plant growth speed. The competition for water is based on a soil hydrological model taking into account rainfalls, water runoff, absorption, diffusion, percolation in soil. So far, the incoming light radiation is not studied in detail and is supposed constant. However, competition for light between plants is directly taken into account in the plant growth model. In our implementation, we propose a simple architecture for such a simulator and a simulation scheme to synchronise the water resource updating （on a temporal basis） and the plant growth cycles （determined by the sum of daily temperatures）. The visualisation techniques are based on sets of layers, allowing both morphological and functional landscape views and providing interesting tools for ecosystem management. Introduction: Valvular heart diseases, often linked to rheumatic heart disease, represent a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa. This study reports the preliminary outcomes of surgical treatment for valvular heart diseases initiated at the Yaoundé General Hospital (YGH) by an entirely local team. Materials and Methods: Between September 2022 and November 2024, 37 patients underwent surgery for valvular heart diseases at YGH. A retrospective analysis of clinical, operative, and postoperative data was conducted using R software (version 4.4.0). Results: Male patients predominated, with a sex ratio of 1.17. The median age at the time of surgery was 40 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 25.0 - 51.0). Dyspnea was the main symptom at admission, reported in 36 patients (97.3%). Rheumatic etiologies were the most frequent (25 cases, 67.57%), followed by atherosclerotic lesions (6 cases, 16.2%) and degenerative lesions (4 cases, 10.83%). Among the 37 patients, 19 (51.4%) underwent mitral valve replacement, 11 (29.7%) aortic valve replacement, 6 (16.2%) double mitral-aortic valve replacement, and 1 (2.7%) tricuspid valve replacement. Mechanical prostheses were implanted in 27 patients (73%), while 10 patients (27%) received biological prostheses. The median duration of cardiopulmonary bypass and aortic clamping was 101 minutes (IQR: 84.75 - 146.25) and 73 minutes (IQR: 55.75 - 116.25), respectively. The median duration of mechanical ventilation and ICU stay were 2 hours (IQR: 2 - 3) and 3 days (IQR: 2 - 4), respectively. The most frequent complication was postoperative anemia requiring blood transfusion in 16 patients (43.2%). Three patients (8.1%) required reoperation for bleeding. There was no in-hospital mortality. Conclusion: Valvular heart diseases treated at YGH are predominantly of rheumatic origin. Valve replacement was by far the most commonly used technique. Early outcomes are satisfactory and encouraging.

The use of oscillating flexible fins in propulsion has been the subject of several studies in recent years, but attention israrely paid to the specific role of stiffness profile in thrust *** profile is defined as the variation in localchordwise bending stiffness (EI) of a fin, from leading to trailing *** this study, flexible fins with a standard NACA0012shape were tested alongside fins with a stiffness profile mimicking that of a Pumpkinseed Sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus).The finswere oscillated with a pitching sinusoidal motion over a range of frequencies and amplitudes, while torque, lateral force andstatic thrust were *** the range of oscillation parameters tested, it was shown that the fin with a biomimetic stiffness profile offered a significantimprovement in static thrust, compared to a fin of similar dimensions with a standard NACA0012 aerofoil *** fin also produced thrust more consistently over each oscillation cycle.A comparison of fin materials of different stiffness showed that the improvement was due to the stiffness profile itself, andwas not simply an effect of altering the overall stiffness of the *** of the same stiffness profile were observed to follow thesame thrust-power curve, independent of the stiffness of the moulding *** fins were shown to produce up to26% greater thrust per watt of input power, within the experimental range.

The first case of Prinzmetal angina was described in 1959 by Prinzmetal, et al. Since this description, several triggering factors have been associated with vasospastic angina （VA） and included： illicit drugs such as cocaine, amphetamine or marijuana, but also bitter-orange, alcohol, butane, chemotherapy drugs, over-the-counter medication and different antibiotics. Smoking is also a major risk factor for developing VA.t21 Thus, except for smoking, many of conventional atherosclerosis risk factors do not appear to be applicable to VA.t21 However, vasospastic angina can also occur without any triggering factor.

A growing world population and possible liquid fuel energy shortages are likely to result in worldwide agricultural intensification, and the possible expansion of non-sustainable practices. The adoption of non-sustainable practices could result in the loss of currently productive land, with potential impacts on human welfare and economic viability. One of the easiest techniques to maintain productivity is to maintain surface soil organic matter. However, developing reliable, cost effective and accurate methods for quantifying and monitoring crop residue cover (a major source of soil organic matter) that remains on top of the soil over large spatial extents constitutes a significant challenge. This article reviews potential remote sensing approaches for estimating surface residue cover with a view to mapping tillage practice.

The aim of this study was to investigate the stability of Carbocysteine (CBC) contained in a reference substance (RS) and in a sample of opened RHINATHIOL® 5% syrup (RNTL 5%) under the effect of some physicochemical parameters (temperature, light, time, pH, bile salts). The developed method was linear, precise and accurate according to USP 38. The co-efficient of determination R2 for linearity was 0.9993. The respective RSD of intra-day and inter-day between days (1st, 2nd and 3rd day) were respectively 0.338% and the interval from 0.05% to 0.387%. The average recovery rate ranged from 98.490% to 100.450%. The detection and quantification limits were 0.0001 mg/mL and 0.001 mg/mL respectively. The method was applied to four samples of opened syrup containing CBC and the CBC content in these samples was found to be in accordance with USP 38. The CBC content in the opened sample of RNTL 5% was obtained by UV-visible spectrophotometry at 217 nm and was 4.887 g/100mL. The study of the influence of physico-chemical factors on the content of CBC in RS and RNTL 5% showed that the evolution of CBC contents in each drug matrix remained dependent on pH and temperature. However, these levels remained stable in the presence of light.
