Sources, evolution and impacts of EC and OC in snow on sea ice： a measurement study in Barrow, Alaska

Based on the field measurements in Barrow, Alaska within the period of April-May 2015, we investigate the sources and variations of elemental carbon(EC) and organic carbon(OC) in the surface layer of snowpack on sea ice, and estimate their effects on the sea ice albedo. Results show that the snow OC in Barrow are from natural sources(e.g. terrestrial higher plants and micro-organisms) mainly, as well as biomass burning(e.g. forest fires and straw combustion) as an important part. Both EC and OC can accumulate at the snow surface with snow melt. The variations in EC and OC and liquid water content in the snow layer are well consistent during the snow-melting period. A higher rate of snow melt implied a more efficient enrichment of EC and OC. In the last phase of snow melt, the concentration increased to a maximum of 16.2 ng/g for EC and 128 ng/g for OC, which is ~10 times larger than those before snow melt onset. Except for the dominant influence of melt amplification mechanism, the variation in concentrations of EC and OC could be disturbed by the air temperature fluctuation and snowfall. Our study indicates that the lightabsorbing impurities contributed 1.6%-5.1% to the reduction in sea ice albedo with melt during the measurement period. The significant period oflight-absorbing impurities influencing on sea ice albedo begins with the rapid melting of overlying snow and ends before the melt ponds formed widely, which lasted for about 10 days in Barrow, 2015.

A quantitative morphometric comparison of cockpit and doline karst landforms

This study presented a quantitative comparison of cockpit and doline karst by examining the numbers and characteristics of typical types of landform entities that are developed in Guilin（Guangxi, China）, La Alianza（PR, USA）, Avalton（KY, USA）, and Oolitic（IN, USA）. Five types of landform entities were defined： isolated hill（IH）, clustered hills（CHs）, isolated sinkhole（IS）, clustered sinkholes（CSs）, and clustered hills with sinkholes（CHSs）. An algorithm was developed to automatically identify these types of landform entities by examining the contour lines on topographic maps of two cockpit karst areas（Guilin and La Alianza） and two doline karst areas（Oolitic and Avalton）. Within each specific study area, the CHSs is the least developed type yet with a larger size and higher relief. The IH and IS entities are smaller in size, lower in relief, and outnumber their clustered counterparts. The total numbers of these types of entities are quite different in cockpit and doline karst areas. Doline karst is characterized by more negative（IS and CSs） than positive（IH and IHs） landforms and vice versa for cockpit karst. For example, the Guilin study area has 1192 positive landform entities in total, which occupy 9.81% of the total study area. It has only 622 negative landform entities occupying only 3.91% of the total study area. By contrast, the doline karst in Oolitic has 130 negative while only 10 positive landform entities. The positive and negative landforms in Oolitic occupy 12.68% and 2.61% of the total study area, respectively. Furthermore, average relief and slope of the landform entities are much higher and steeper in the cockpit karst than the doline karst areas. For instance, the average slope of CHs in Alvaton is 3.90 degrees while it is 19.78 degrees in La Alianza. The average relief of CSs is 4.07 m and 34.29 m in Oolitic and Guilin respectively. We developed a reliable simple analysis of adenosine,creatinine and other nucleosides(cytidine and guanosine)with single measurement based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS)using DSP-AuNPs with Cu^(2+)ions probe and applied it to achieve noninvasive screening of lung *** gold nanoparticles(AuNPs)were modified with 3,3′-dithiodipropionic acid di(N-hydroxysuccinimide ester)(DSP),which could react with above mentioned molecules followed with the aggregation of AuNPs at the presence of Cu^(2+),thus form the plasmonic hot spots to dramatically increase their fingerprint Raman *** probe of DSP-AuNPs was applied for the detail analysis of urinary adenosine of healthy people and lung cancer *** SERS measurement indicated a higher concentration of urinary adenosine for lung cancer patients than that of healthy people,which was consistent with the results measured by high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).In combination of Raman spectroscopy with the orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis(OPLS-DA)model,we are able to discriminate the lung cancer patients from healthy people with the urinary *** results indicated that besides of adenosine,other metabolites including uric acid,guanine and creatinine may also be the potential tumor markers in urine for the noninvasive lung cancer *** a method paves a way for the noninvasive cancer screening and it can be further modified for the detection of other molecules on medical diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of Sancai powder in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) inadequately controlled with single oral metformin in a randomized controlled trial(RCT).METHODS: A total of 132 patients with T2 DM were enrolled in the study, who only took metformin(500-1000 mg/day) for at least three months and with inadequate glycemic control(7.0% ≤ hemoglobin A1 c ≤ 9.0%) in the past three *** patients stopped taking metformin with lifestyle interventions for three weeks, and 105 patients qualified for the program. They were randomly divided into the Sancai powder group and the metformin group(1500 mg/day). The follow-up period was for 12 weeks. Comparisons of several variables were ***: No significant differences were found between the two groups in hemoglobin A1c(Hb A1c),fasting plasma glucose(FPG) and 2 h post-meal glucose(2h PG), although they had decreased significantly(P ges of homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance and insulin sensitivity index in the two groups(P < 0.05). Sancai powder significantly reduced triglyceride level(P < 0.05), although there was no significant difference in the body weight and body mass index in the two ***: In this 12-week study, Sancai powder could significantly reduce hemoglobin A1 c,FPG and 2h PG levels, improved beta-cell function and insulin resistance of the T2 DM inadequately controlled with metformin.
