Nausea and vomiting are important defensive responses to cope with pathogens and toxins that invade the body. The nucleus of the solitary tract(NTS) is important for initiating these responses. However, the molecular heterogeneities and cellular diversities of the NTS occlude a better understanding of these defensive responses. Here, we constructed the single-nucleus transcriptomic atlas of NTS cells and found multiple populations of NTS neurons that may be involved in these defensive responses. Among these, we identified Calbindin1-positive(Calb1+) NTS neurons that are molecularly distinct from Tac1+neurons.These Calb1+neurons are critical for nausea and retching induced by cereulide; an emetic toxin secreted by Bacillus Cereus. Strikingly, we found that cereulide can directly modulate vagal sensory neurons that innervate Calb1+NTS neurons, a novel mechanism distinct from that for nausea and retching induced by Staphylococcal enterotoxin A. Together, our transcriptomic atlas of NTS neurons and the functional analyses revealed the neural mechanism for cereulide-induced retching-like behavior. These results demonstrate the molecular and cellular complexities in the brain that underlie defensive responses to the diversities of pathogens and toxins.

NONMONOTONE LOCAL MINIMAX METHODS FOR FINDING MULTIPLE SADDLE POINTS

In this paper,by designing a normalized nonmonotone search strategy with the BarzilaiBorwein-type step-size,a novel local minimax method(LMM),which is a globally convergent iterative method,is proposed and analyzed to find multiple(unstable)saddle points of nonconvex functionals in Hilbert spaces.Compared to traditional LMMs with monotone search strategies,this approach,which does not require strict decrease of the objective functional value at each iterative step,is observed to converge faster with less computations.Firstly,based on a normalized iterative scheme coupled with a local peak selection that pulls the iterative point back onto the solution submanifold,by generalizing the Zhang-Hager(ZH)search strategy in the optimization theory to the LMM framework,a kind of normalized ZH-type nonmonotone step-size search strategy is introduced,and then a novel nonmonotone LMM is constructed.Its feasibility and global convergence results are rigorously carried out under the relaxation of the monotonicity for the functional at the iterative sequences.Secondly,in order to speed up the convergence of the nonmonotone LMM,a globally convergent Barzilai-Borwein-type LMM(GBBLMM)is presented by explicitly constructing the Barzilai-Borwein-type step-size as a trial step-size of the normalized ZH-type nonmonotone step-size search strategy in each iteration.Finally,the GBBLMM algorithm is implemented to find multiple unstable solutions of two classes of semilinear elliptic boundary value problems with variational structures:one is the semilinear elliptic equations with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition and another is the linear elliptic equations with semilinear Neumann boundary conditions.Extensive numerical results indicate that our approach is very effective and speeds up the LMMs significantly.

Ionic liquids as the effective technology for enhancing transdermal drug delivery: Design principles, roles, mechanisms, and future challenges

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been proven to be an effective technology for enhancing drug transdermal absorption. However, due to the unique structural components of ILs, the design of efficient ILs and elucidation of action mechanisms remain to be explored. In this review, basic design principles of ideal ILs for transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS) are discussed considering melting point, skin permeability, and toxicity, which depend on the molar ratios, types, functional groups of ions and inter-ionic interactions. Secondly, the contributions of ILs to the development of TDDS through different roles are described: as novel skin penetration enhancers for enhancing transdermal absorption of drugs;as novel solvents for improving the solubility of drugs in carriers;as novel active pharmaceutical ingredients (API-ILs) for regulating skin permeability, solubility, release, and pharmacokinetic behaviors of drugs;and as novel polymers for the development of smart medical materials. Moreover, diverse action mechanisms, mainly including the interactions among ILs, drugs, polymers, and skin components, are summarized. Finally, future challenges related to ILs are discussed, including underlying quantitative structure-activity relationships, complex interaction forces between anions, drugs, polymers and skin microenvironment, long-term stability, and in vivo safety issues. In summary, this article will promote the development of TDDS based on ILs.

Theoretical Mechanism and Implementation Path of Digital Technology Enabling Cultural Heritage Protection

Cultural heritage is an important carrier of Chinese excellent traditional culture,based on the background of digital and real integration,introducing symbiosis theory into the theoretical analysis framework of the integration and development of cultural heritage and digital technology has important academic value and practical significance.Based on the in-depth explanation of the connotation of the integration of cultural heritage and digital technology,we specifically analyze the symbiotic unit,symbiotic environment,and symbiotic mode in the dynamic symbiosis system,and discuss the application of digital technology in the protection,dissemination,and experience of cultural heritage.The integration development of Chinese cultural heritage and digital technology has made remarkable achievements,but there are still constraints such as insufficient integration depth,high user demand but weak practical application,and backward protection and utilization cognition.Therefore,it is necessary to accelerate the application and management of technology research and development,pay attention to user needs,and improve the level of social cognition,to realize the value of cultural heritage shared by the society.

Attention-Enhanced Voice Portrait Model Using Generative Adversarial Network

Voice portrait technology has explored and established the relationship between speakers’ voices and their facialfeatures, aiming to generate corresponding facial characteristics by providing the voice of an unknown speaker.Due to its powerful advantages in image generation, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have now beenwidely applied across various fields. The existing Voice2Face methods for voice portraits are primarily based onGANs trained on voice-face paired datasets. However, voice portrait models solely constructed on GANs facelimitations in image generation quality and struggle to maintain facial similarity. Additionally, the training processis relatively unstable, thereby affecting the overall generative performance of the model. To overcome the abovechallenges,wepropose a novel deepGenerativeAdversarialNetworkmodel for audio-visual synthesis, namedAVPGAN(Attention-enhanced Voice Portrait Model using Generative Adversarial Network). This model is based ona convolutional attention mechanism and is capable of generating corresponding facial images from the voice ofan unknown speaker. Firstly, to address the issue of training instability, we integrate convolutional neural networkswith deep GANs. In the network architecture, we apply spectral normalization to constrain the variation of thediscriminator, preventing issues such as mode collapse. Secondly, to enhance the model’s ability to extract relevantfeatures between the two modalities, we propose a voice portrait model based on convolutional attention. Thismodel learns the mapping relationship between voice and facial features in a common space from both channeland spatial dimensions independently. Thirdly, to enhance the quality of generated faces, we have incorporated adegradation removal module and utilized pretrained facial GANs as facial priors to repair and enhance the clarityof the generated facial images. Comprehensive evaluation of the optimal rates of irrigation and potassium application for strawberry

Accurate and effective management of irrigation and fertilization is essential for efficient greenhouse strawberry production.Here,the effects of the combined application of water and potassium on strawberry growth were evaluated by experimenting with 12 treatments,including four transpiration(ET_(c))-based irrigation levels(W1:100%ET_(c),W2:85%ET_(c),W3:70%ET_(c),and W4:55%ET_(c))and three potassium levels according to the target yield(K1:369.5 kg/hm^(2),K2:307.9 kg/hm^(2),and K3:246.3 kg/hm^(2)).Various indexes of strawberry yield,fruit quality,water and fertilizer utilization efficiency,and soil nutrient residues were measured.Irrigation and potassium application had significant effects on strawberry production.Higher irrigation levels increased yield(Y),and moderate water and potassium application increased single fruit weight(SFW),water utilization efficiency(WUE),total soluble sugar(TSSC),and the sugar-acid ratio(SAR).While low-application of potassium increased the soluble protein content(SP),partial factor productivity of potassium(PFP_(K)),and reduce nutrient residues in soil effectively.A comprehensive system for evaluating strawberry growth and its benefits to the soil environment was developed.The FAHP and CRITIC methods were used to calculate the subjective weight and objective weight of each index,respectively.The largest subjective weight was observed forY(0.200),and the largest objective weight was observed for soil-available potassium(0.101).The final weight was determined using Game theory;Y had the highest weight(0.185),and free amino acids(FAA)had the lowest weight(0.047).Grey relational analysis(GRA)was used to evaluate the optimal irrigation and potassium scheme for accomplishing multiple objectives.The response of the comprehensive score of strawberries to irrigation and potassium exhibited a negative parabolic relationship,and the effect of irrigation was greater than the effect of potassium application.There was a significant interaction between irrigation and potassium application,and an

Traditional multicolor fluorescent hydrogels are generated through the assembly of discrete fluorescent hydrogels,which is not a complete integration much distinct from living organisms.On the basis of aggregation-induced emission(AIE),a special solvent polar-responsive AIE molecule possessing a twisted intramolecular charge transfer(TICT)effect was noticed.By incorporating it into the gel network,an AIE gel that displays continuous gradient fluorescence was fabricated.First,hydrogel A containing the solvent polar-responsive AIE-gen was prepared to show orange fluorescence.After soaking in the organic solvents,the fluorescence color transition of hydrogel A ranging from orange to green occurred when being immersed in high-polarity organic solvents ascribed to the embedded AIE-gen owning TICT effect.Then,hydrogel A was successively lifted up from organic solvents.Due to the different immersion time of each section for the hydrogel,the polarity difference occurred.Then,the produced gel B showed continuous gradient fluorescence ranging from orange to green under the irradiation of UV light.

High monomer concentration is a requisite for engendering the aggregation-induced emssion(AIE)phenomenon as well as the formation of supramolecular polymers.Therefore,this is supposed to ensure the generation of AIE supramolecular polymers,wherein the monomer soluability takes effect.Nevertheless,parts of supramolecular monomers are considered as poessessing different soluability towards the same sovlent,through which the polymerzation process is thus hard to proceed.Interfacial polymerzation gets over the soluabilty restriction,providing a facile method for propelling the reaction of thesemonomers.Herein,we had prepared M1 containing tetraphenylethene(TPE)functionalized with two terpyridine derivatives,then making M1 dissolving in CHCl3 to give solutions.Cu^(2+)solutions were fabricated through dissolving CuCl_(2)into H2O.Towards mixing those solutions,AIE interfacial supramolecular polymers(AIEISPs)displaying green fluorescence were generated at the interface of two phases on the basis of metal-coordination between terpyridine and Cu^(2+).These AIEISPs were certificated to possess the stimuli-responsiveness,for which the excessive addition of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide would cause the structure destruction owing to the stronger bonding ability with Cu^(2+)than that of terpyridine.These fabricated AIEISPs had provided a new avenue to prepare AIE supramolecular polymers.

Simultaneous regulation of cations and anions in an electrolyte for high-capacity, high-stability aqueous zinc–vanadium batteries

Safe,inexpensive aqueous zinc-ion batteries(AZIBs)are regarded as promising energy storage devices.However,they still face issues,including dissolution and collapse of the cathode as well as H_(2)evolution and the growth of Zn dendrites on the Zn anode.Herein,we simultaneously regulate the cations and anions in the electrolyte for high-capacity,high-stability aqueous zinc–vanadium(Zn–V)batteries based on a bimetallic cation-doped Na_(0.33)K_(0.1)V_(2)O_(5)·nH_(2)O cathode.We demonstrate that Na^(+) cations suppress cathode dissolution and restrain Zn dendrite growth on the anode via an electrostatic shield effect.We also illustrate that ClO_(4)^(-) anions participate in energy storage at the cathode and are reduced to Cl^(-),generating a protective layer on the Zn anode surface and providing a stable interface to decrease Zn dendrites and H_(2)evolution during long-term cycling.When Na^(+) and ClO_(4)^(-) are introduced into an aqueous ZnSO_(4) electrolyte,a Zn/Zn symmetric cell shows durable and reversible Zn stripping/plating for 1500 h at a current density of 1 mA cm^(-2) and with an area capacity of 1 mAh cm^(-2).Zn/Na_(0.33)K_(0.1)V_(2)O_(5)·nH_(2)O full batteries exhibit a high capacity of 600 mAh g^(-1)at 0.1 A g^(-1) and long-term cycling performance for 5000 cycles,with a capacity of 200 mAh g^(-1) at 20 Ag^(-1).
