Quantitative determination of the electron beam radiation dose for SARS-CoV-2 inactivation to decontaminate frozen food packaging

The spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2) from cold-chain foods to frontline workers poses a serious public health threat during the current global pandemic. There is an urgent need to design concise approaches for effective virus inactivation under different physicochemical conditions to reduce the risk of contagion through viral contaminated surfaces of cold-chain foods. By employing a time course of electron beam exposure to a high titer of SARS-CoV-2 at cold-chain temperatures, a radiation dose of 2 kGy was demonstrated to reduce the viral titer from 10^(4.5)to 0 median tissue culture infectious dose(TCID_(50))/mL. Next,using human coronavirus OC43(HCoV-OC43) as a suitable SARS-CoV-2 surrogate, 3 kGy of high-energy electron radiation was defined as the inactivation dose for a titer reduction of more than 4 log units on tested packaging materials. Furthermore, quantitative reverse transcription PCR(RT-qPCR) was used to test three viral genes,namely, E, N, and ORF1ab. There was a strong correlation between TCID50and RT-qPCR for SARS-CoV-2detection. However, RT-qPCR could not differentiate between the infectivity of the radiation-inactivated and nonirradiated control viruses. As the defined radiation dose for effective viral inactivation fell far below the upper safe dose limit for food processing, our results provide a basis for designing radiation-based approaches for the decontamination of SARS-CoV-2 in frozen food products. We further demonstrate that cell-based virus assays are essential to evaluate the SARS-CoV-2 inactivation efficiency for the decontaminating strategies.

Surface cracks are commonly observed in coatings and films.When structures with coatings are subject to stretching,opening mode cracks are likely to form on the surface,which may further lead to other forms of damage,such as interfacial delamination and substrate damage.Possible crack forms include cracks extending towards the interface and channeling across the film.In this paper,a two-dimensional numerical model is proposed to obtain the structural strain energy at arbitrary crack lengths for bilayer structures under uniaxial tension.The energy release rate and structural stress intensity factors can be obtained accordingly,and the effects of geometry and material features on fracture characteristics are investigated,with most crack patterns being confirmed as unstable.The proposed model can also facilitate the analysis of the stress distribution in periodic crack patterns of films.The results from the numerical model are compared with those obtained by the finite element method(FEM),and the accuracy of the theoretical results is demonstrated.

A hybrid flexible gas sensory system with perceptual learning

Imbuing artificial sensory system with intelligence of the biological counterpart is limited by challenges in emulating perceptual learning ability at the device level.In biological systems,stimuli from the surrounding environment are detected,transmitted,and processed by receptor,afferent nerve,and brain,respectively.This process allows the living creatures to identify the potential hazards and improve their adaptability in various environments.Here,inspired by the biological olfaction system,a gas sensory system with perceptual learning is developed.As a proof-of-concept,H2S gas with various concentrations is used as the stimulation and the stimuli will be converted to pulse-like physiological signals in the designed system,which consists of a gas sensor,a flexible oscillator,and a memristor-type artificial synapse.Furthermore,the learning ability is implemented using a supervised learning method based on k-nearest neighbors(KNN)algorithm.The recognition accuracy can be enhanced by repeating training,illustrating a great potential to be used as the neuromorphic sensory system with a learning ability for the applications in robotics.

Role of localized phonon vibration in luminescence performance of Pr doped Ba(Mg_(0.28)Zr_(0.16)Ta_(0.56))O_(3)transparent ceramics

Oxygen-assisted high temperature solid-state reaction approach was employed for the fabrication of Pr activated Ba(Mg_(0.28)Zr_(0.16)Ta_(0.56))O_(3)transparent ceramic phosphor.Retiveld refinement of X-ray diffraction pattern was carried out to reveal the lattice parameters and crystal structural information.Under the blue-light excitation ofλ=473 nm,the phosphor exhibits a sharp intense red emission centered at645 nm,accompanied by several other weak peaks.PL evolution with temperature shows a significant luminescence quenching behavior,and the underlying multi-phonon interaction with optical center is revealed by proposing an unprecedent theoretical calculation work.Such a phonon effect is further confirmed from the red-shift of peak position with temperature,and the involved phonon energy of50.7 meV is determined from Raman scattering measurement.More interestingly,the fitted results of transient-state PL spectra show a fluctuation of luminescence lifetime at various temperatures,further indicating a significant effect of phonon vibration in the system.

Deciphering the evolution and complexity of wheat germplasm from a genomic perspective

Bread wheat provides an essential fraction of the daily calorific intake for humanity.Due to its huge and complex genome,progress in studying on the wheat genome is substantially trailed behind those of the other two major crops,rice and maize,for at least a decade.With rapid advances in genome assembling and reduced cost of high-throughput sequencing,emerging de novo genome assemblies of wheat and whole-genome sequencing data are leading to a paradigm shift in wheat research.Here,we review recent progress in dissecting the complex genome and germplasm evolution of wheat since the release of the first high-quality wheat genome.New insights have been gained in the evolution of wheat germplasm during domestication and modern breeding progress,genomic variations at multiple scales contributing to the diversity of wheat germplasm,and complex transcriptional and epigenetic regulations of functional genes in polyploid wheat.Genomics databases and bioinformatics tools meeting the urgent needs of wheat ge-nomics research are also summarized.The ever-increasing omics data,along with advanced tools and well-structured databases,are expected to accelerate deciphering the germplasm and gene resources in wheat for future breeding advances.

Graph representation learning-based residential electricity behavior identification and energy management

It is important to achieve an efficient home energy management system(HEMS)because of its role in promoting energy saving and emission reduction for end-users.Two critical issues in an efficient HEMS are identification of user behavior and energy management strategy.However,current HEMS methods usually assume perfect knowledge of user behavior or ignore the strong correlations of usage habits with different applications.This can lead to an insuffi-cient description of behavior and suboptimal management strategy.To address these gaps,this paper proposes non-intrusive load monitoring(NILM)assisted graph reinforcement learning(GRL)for intelligent HEMS decision making.First,a behavior correlation graph incorporating NILM is introduced to represent the energy consumption behavior of users and a multi-label classification model is used to monitor the loads.Thus,efficient identification of user behavior and description of state transition can be achieved.Second,based on the online updating of the behavior correlation graph,a GRL model is proposed to extract information contained in the graph.Thus,reliable strategy under uncer-tainty of environment and behavior is available.Finally,the experimental results on several datasets verify the effec-tiveness of the proposed model.

Fault Analysis of Wind Power Rolling Bearing Based on EMD Feature Extraction

In a wind turbine,the rolling bearing is the critical component.However,it has a high failure rate.Therefore,the failure analysis and fault diagnosis of wind power rolling bearings are very important to ensure the high reliability and safety of wind power equipment.In this study,the failure form and the corresponding reason for the failure are discussed firstly.Then,the natural frequency and the characteristic frequency are analyzed.The Empirical Mode Decomposition(EMD)algorithm is used to extract the characteristics of the vibration signal of the rolling bearing.Moreover,the eigenmode function is obtained and then filtered by the kurtosis criterion.Consequently,the relationship between the actual fault frequency spectrum and the theoretical fault frequency can be obtained.Then the fault analysis is performed.To enhance the accuracy of fault diagnosis,based on the previous feature extraction and the time-frequency domain feature extraction of the data after EMD decomposition processing,four different classifiers are added to diagnose and classify the fault status of rolling bearings and compare them with four different classifiers.

Clustering compression-based computation-efficient calibration method for digital twin modeling of HVAC system

Digital twin is regarded as the next-generation technology for the effective operation of heating,ventilation and air conditioning(HVAC)systems.It is essential to calibrate the digital twin models to match them closely with real physical systems.Conventional real-time calibration methods cannot satisfy such requirements since the computation loads are beyond acceptable tolerances.To address this challenge,this study proposes a clustering compression-based method to enhance the computation efficiency of digital twin model calibration for HVAC systems.This method utilizes clustering algorithms to remove redundant data for achieving data compression.Moreover,a hierarchical multi-stage heuristic model calibration strategy is developed to accelerate the calibration of similar component models.Its basic idea is that once a component model is calibrated by heuristic methods,its optimal solution is utilized to narrow the ranges of parameter probability distributions of similar components.By doing so,the calibration process can be guided,so that fewer iterations would be used.The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using the operational data from an HVAC system in an industrial building.Results show that the proposed clustering compression-based method can reduce computation loads by 97%,compared to the conventional calibration method.And the proposed hierarchical heuristic model calibration strategy is capable of accelerating the calibration process after clustering and saves 14.6%of the time costs.

During severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS‐CoV‐2)infection,activated macrophages,dendritic cells(D.C.),neutrophils,and natural killer(N.K.)cells are the first defense against infection.These immune effectors trap and ingest the virus,kill infected epithelial cells,or produce anti‐viral cytokines.Evidence suggests that aging,obesity,and mental illness can lead to weakened innate immunity and,thus,are all associated with elevated infection and severe disease progression of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID‐19).Innate immune defense networks play a fundamental role in suppressing viral replication,infection establishment,and viral pathogenesis of SARS‐CoV‐2 and other respiratory viruses.

Dual roles of trifluoroborate in nickel-catalyzed ethylene polymerization:Electronic perturbation and anchoring for heterogenization

Brookhart-typeα-diimine nickel and palladium catalysts have been extensively studied over the past several decades;however,the heterogenization of these metal complexes has received much less attention.In this contribution,we installed a trifluoroborate potassium substituent on anα-diimine framework.The ionic nature of trifluoroborate potassium endowed theα-diimine nickel complex with a strong affinity for the SiO_(2)support,while its electron-donating nature enhanced the catalyst stability and polyethylene molecular weight.In the presence of only 100 equiv.of Et2AlCl cocatalyst,the SiO_(2)-supported catalyst demonstrated significantly better performance than its homogeneous analog during ethylene polymerization,with extremely high activity(1.42–6.53×10^(7)g mol^(−1)h^(−1))and high thermal stability.The heterogeneous system led to the formation of high-molecular-weight polyethylenes(Mn 142,500–732,800 g/mol),narrow polydispersities(2.18–3.00),tunable branching densities(21–64 per 1000 carbon atoms),and great mechanical properties.Moreover,the efficient copolymerization of ethylene with comonomers such as methyl 10-undecenoate,6-chloro-1-hexene or 5-hexenylacetate was achieved.These superior properties enabled by the trifluoroborate potassium moiety may inspire its applications in other polymerization catalyst systems.
