The application of recombinant DNA technology has resulted in many insect-resistant varieties by genetic engineering （GE）. Crops expressing Cry toxins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis （Bt） have been planted worldwide, and are an effective tool for pest control. However, one ecological concern regarding the potential effects of insect-resistant GE plants on non-target organisms （NTOs） has been continually debated. In the present study, we briefly summarize the data regarding the development and commercial use of transgenic Bt varieties, elaborate on the procedure and methods for assessing the non-target effects of insect-resistant GE plants, and synthetically analyze the related research results, mostly those published between 2005 and 2010. A mass of laboratory and field studies have shown that the currently available Bt crops have no direct detrimental effects on NTOs due to their narrow spectrum of activity, and Bt crops are increasing the abundance of some beneficial insects and improving the natural control of specific pests. The use of Bt crops, such as Bt maize and Bt cotton, results in significant reductions of insecticide application and clear benefits on the environment and farmer health. Consequently, Bt crops can be a useful component of integrated pest management systems to protect the crop from targeted pests.

An efficient and eco-friendly protocol for synthesizing difluoromethylated oxindoles through a visiblelight induced one-pot tandem reaction of N-arylacrylamides,difluoroacetic acid and Ph I(OAc)_(2)was *** reaction proceeded in the absence of any additive,base,metal-catalyst and external photosensitizer,using cheap and easily available CHF_(2)CO_(2)H as the difluoromethylation reagent and bulk biomass-derived 2-Me THF as the sole solvent.26 Examples of N-arylacrylamide substrates were investigated,and all of them successfully underwent difluoromethylation to deliver the target products in good to excellent yields.

Pretreatment of Rice Straw by Hydrogen Peroxide for Enhanced Methane Yield

A pretreatment process for hydrogen peroxide （H2O2） was optimized to enhance the biodegradation performance of rice straw and increase biogas yield. A determination experiment was conducted under predicted optimal conditions. Optimization was implemented using response surface methodology. The effects of biodegradation and the interactive effects of pretreatment time （PT）, H2O2 concentration （HC）, and substrate to inoculum ratio （S/I） on methane yield were investigated. The lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose of rice straw were significantly degraded with increasing HC. The optimal conditions for the use of pretreated rice straw in anaerobic digestion were a 6.18-d PT, 2.68% HC （w/w total solid）, and 1.08 S/I; these conditions result in a methane yield of 288 mL g-1 volatile solids （VS）. A determination coefficient of 95.2% was obtained, indicating that the model used to predict the anabolic digestion process has a favorable fit with the experimental parameters. The determination experiment resulted in a methane yield of 290 mL g-1 VS, 88.0% higher than that of untreated rice straw. Thus, H2O2 pretreatment of rice straw can be used to improve methane yields during biogas production.

Main observation and conclusion An enzyme-free amperometric sensor based on a heptadecapeptide possessing an electroactive ferrocene(Fc)linker as ferrocene-Gly-Gly-Gly-Gly-Phe-Gly-His-Ile-His-Glu-Gly-Tyr-Gly-Gly-Gly-Gly-Lys-(CH_(2))_(4)-dithiocyclopentane self-assembled on gold substrate was designed and fabricated for specific determination of L-arginine(L-Arg).The detection mechanism is based on conformational change of surface-immobilized peptide induced by the target L-Arg,which was confirmed via SEM,TEM,AFM,XPS,and SPR *** binding affinity and the recognition feasibility of immobilized specific and non-specific peptides were also assessed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS),cyclic voltammetry(CV),and differential pulse voltammetry(DPV).The proposed method can serve as“signal-on”sensor for detection of L-Arg down to 31 pmol/L with broad linear range(0.0001 to 10μmol/L).Furthermore,the Fc-conjugated specific peptide sensor was successfully applied to the determination of L-Arg in pig serums with a recovery rate of 97.5%—106.9%,and its test results are in good agreement with that of chromatographic instrument,evidencing that the oligopeptide-based sensor can be served as a simple and enzyme-free biosensing platform towards L-Arg for future application.

Alpha radiolysis of nitric acid aqueous solution by a ^(238)Pu source is investigated experimentally and *** time dependence of the nitrous acid yield on dose rate,nitric acid concentration,and nitrate ion concentration is studied.A novel kinetic model for the α-radiolysis of nitric acid aqueous solution is established,by considering the direct and indirect *** simulation results agree well with the experimental data,indicating the validity of our model to treat the reaction paths for generation and consumption of nitrous *** is shown that the redox reactions involving Pu cannot be neglected in theα-radiolysis of the *** results provide a better understanding of the α-ray radiolysis of aqueous nitric acid.

In this study,we proposed a method to measure the epidermal thickness(ET)of skin based on deep convolutional neural network,which was used to determine the boundaries of skin surface and the ridge portion in dermal-epidermis junction(de J)in cross-section optical coherence tomography(OCT)images of fingertip *** ET was calculated based on the row difference between the surface and the ridge top,which is determined by search the local maxima of boundary of the ridge *** results demonstrated that the region of ridge portion in deJ was well determined and the ET measurement in this work can reduce the effect of the papillae valley in deJ by 9.85%.It can be used for quantitative characterization of skin to differentiate the skin diseases.

Aerobic oxidation using pure dioxygen gas as the oxidant has attracted much attention,but its application in synthetic chemistry has been significantly hampered by the complexity of catalytic system and potential risk of high-energy dioxygen *** employing 1,2-diethoxyethane as a catalyst and ambient air as an oxidant,an efficient protocol for the construction of various aryl-alkyl and diaryl ketones through oxidative cleavage of gem-disubstituted aromatic alkenes under minimal solvent conditions has been achieved.
