Three-dimensional finite element simulation and reconstruction of jointed rock models using CT scanning and photogrammetry

The geometry of joints has a significant influence on the mechanical properties of *** simplify the curved joint shapes in rocks,the joint shape is usually treated as straight lines or planes in most laboratory experiments and numerical *** this study,the computerized tomography (CT) scanning and photogrammetry were employed to obtain the internal and surface joint structures of a limestone sample,*** describe the joint geometry,the edge detection algorithms and a three-dimensional (3D) matrix mapping method were applied to reconstruct CT-based and photogrammetry-based jointed rock *** comparison tests,the numerical uniaxial compression tests were conducted on an intact rock sample and a sample with a joint simplified to a plane using the parallel computing *** results indicate that the mechanical characteristics and failure process of jointed rocks are significantly affected by the geometry of *** presence of joints reduces the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS),elastic modulus,and released acoustic emission (AE) energy of rocks by 37%–67%,21%–24%,and 52%–90%,*** to the simplified joint sample,the proposed photogrammetry-based numerical model makes the most of the limited geometry information of *** UCS,accumulative released AE energy,and elastic modulus of the photogrammetry-based sample were found to be very close to those of the CT-based *** UCS value of the simplified joint sample (i.e.38.5 MPa) is much lower than that of the CT-based sample (i.e.72.3 MPa).Additionally,the accumulative released AE energy observed in the simplified joint sample is 3.899 times lower than that observed in the CT-based *** scanning provides a reliable means to visualize the joints in rocks,which can be used to verify the reliability of photogrammetry *** application of the photogrammetry-based sample enables detailed analysis for estimating the mechanical properties of jointed rocks.

Hydrothermal Synthesis, Characterization and Catalytic Properties of Nanoporous MoO_ 3/ZrO_ 2 Mixed Oxide

A nanoporous MoO3/ZrO2 mixed oxide was hydrothermally synthesized by hydrolyzing zirconium isopropoxide in the presence of a cationic surfactant, eetyltrimethylammonium bromide（CTAB）. The crystal structure and the acidity of the obtained nanoporous MoO3/ZrO2 mixed oxide were determined by means of XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption and NH3-TPD, respectively. The isobutane/butene alkylation over the MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst was carried out in a fixed bed reactor. The results reveal that ZrO2 in MoO3/ZrO2 exists mainly in the tetragonal phase, and the catalyst samples possess large specific surface areas as well as moderate acidity for isobutane/butene alkylation. Compared with samples prepared by impregnation and sol-gel processes, MoO3/ZrO2 mixed oxide samples prepared in this work have a better catalytic activity.

A computational fluid dynamics model for wind simulation:model implementation and experimental validation

To provide physically based wind modelling for wind erosion research at regional scale, a 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) wind model was developed. The model was programmed in C language based on the Navier-Stokes equations, and it is freely available as open source. Integrated with the spatial analysis and modelling tool (SAMT), the wind model has convenient input preparation and powerful output visualization. To validate the wind model, a series of experiments was con- ducted in a wind tunnel. A blocking inflow experiment was designed to test the performance of the model on simulation of basic fluid processes. A round obstacle experiment was designed to check if the model could simulate the influences of the obstacle on wind field. Results show that measured and simulated wind fields have high correlations, and the wind model can simulate both the basic processes of the wind and the influences of the obstacle on the wind field. These results show the high reliability of the wind model. A digital elevation model (DEM) of an area (3800 m long and 1700 m wide) in the Xilingele grassland in Inner Mongolia (autonomous region, China) was applied to the model, and a 3D wind field has been successfully generated. The clear imple- mentation of the model and the adequate validation by wind tunnel experiments laid a solid foundation for the prediction and assessment of wind erosion at regional scale.

Probabilistic seismic response and uncertainty analysis of continuous bridges under near-fault ground motions

Performance-based seismic design can generate predictable structure damage result with given seismic ***,there are multiple sources of uncertainties in the seismic design process that can affect desired performance *** paper mainly focuses on the effects of near-fault pulse-like ground motions and the uncertainties in bridge modeling on the seismic demands of regular continuous highway *** modeling a regular continuous bridge with OpenSees software,a series of nonlinear dynamic time-history analysis of the bridge at three different site conditions under near-fault pulse-like ground motions are carried *** relationships between different Intensity Measure(IM)parameters and the Engineering Demand Parameter(EDP)are *** selecting the peak ground acceleration as the most correlated IM parameter and the drift ratio of the bridge column as the EDP parameter,a probabilistic seismic demand model is developed for near-fault earthquake ground motions for 3 different site *** this basis,the uncertainty analysis is conducted with the key sources of uncertainty during the finite element *** the results are quantified by the"swing"base on the specific distribution range of each uncertainty parameter both in near-fault and far-fault *** the ground motions are selected from PEER database,while the bridge case study is a typical regular highway bridge designed in accordance with the Chinese Guidelines for Seismic Design of Highway *** results show that PGA is a proper IM parameter for setting up a linear probabilistic seismic demand model;damping ratio,pier diameter and concrete strength are the main uncertainty parameters during bridge modeling,which should be considered both in near-fault and far-fault ground motion cases.

In recent decades,dual-band photodetectors have received widespread attention due to better target iden-tification,which are considered as the development trend of next generation ***,the traditional dual-band photodetectors based on heteroepitaxial growth,superlattice and multiple quantum well structures are limited by complex fabrication process and low ***,we report a UV/IR dual-band photodetector by integrating ultra-wide gap B-Ga2O,and narrow-gap black phosphorous(BP)nanoflakes.A vertical van der Waals(vdW)heterostructure is formed between BP and B-Ga,O,by mechanically exfoliated method integrated without the requirement of lattice *** heterostructure devices show excellent rectification characteristics with high recti-fving ratio of ca.10 and low reverse current around ***,the device displays obvious photoresponse underUV and IR irradiations with responsivities of 0.87 and 2.15 mA/W,*** also explore the band alignment transit within the heterostructure photodetector at different bias *** work paves the way for fabricating novel dual-band photodetectors by utilizing 2D materials.

Dexmedetomidine Attenuates High Glucose-induced HK-2 Epithelial-mesenchymal Transition by Inhibiting AKT and ERK

Objective To explore the protective effects of dexmedetomidine(Dex)against high glucose-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition in HK-2 cells and relevant *** HK-2 cells were exposed to either glucose or glucose+Dex for 6 *** production of ROS,morphology of HK-2 cells,and cell cycle were ***,the expression of AKT,p-AKT,ERK,pERK,PI3 K,E-Cadherin,Claudin-1,andα-SMA were determined and compared between HK-2 cells exposed to glucose and those exposed to both glucose and Dex with or without PI3 K/AKT pathway inhibitor LY294002 and ERK pathway inhibitor *** Compared with HK-2 cells exposed to high level of glucose,the HK-2 cells exposed to both high level of glucose and Dex showed:(1)lower level of ROS production;(2)cell morphology was complete;(3)more cells in G1 phase;(4)lower expression of p-AKT,p-ERK andα-SMA,higher expression of ECadherin and ***3 K/AKT inhibitor LY294002 and ERK inhibitor U0126 decreased the expression of p-AKT,p-ERK andα-SMA,and increased the expression of E-Cadherin and *** Dex can attenuate high glucose-induced HK-2 epithelial-mesenchymal transition by inhibiting AKT and ERK.

Lead telluride(PbTe)is one of the reliable candidates for infrared(IR)optoelectronics with optimum band-gap as well as excellent photoelectric *** interests had been paid on the growth and device applications with PbTe for the development of high-performance IR photodetectors especially those working in the near-infrared *** a great deal of effort had been made to prepare PbTe nanostructures for miniaturized detectors,it is difficult to synthesize high-quality two-dimensional(2D)PbTe crystals due to its rock-salt non-layered ***,a facile strategy for controllable synthesis of ultrathin crystalline PbTe nanosheets by van der Waals epitaxy is *** an optimized growth temperature,which determines the morphology transit from triangular pyramid islands to regular square 2D planars,PbTe nanosheets in lateral size of tens of microns with thickness down to~7 nm are ***,ultrasensitive near-infrared detectors(NIRDs)based on the as-grown 2D PbTe nanosheets have been demonstrated with an ultrahigh responsivity exceeding 3,847 A/W at the wavelength of 1,550 nm under room *** approach demonstrates that 2D PbTe nanosheets have great latent capacity of developing high-performance miniaturized IR optoelectronic devices.

Predicting and delineating soil temperature regimes of China using pedotransfer function

Soil temperature regime(STR)is important for soil classification and land ***,STR is delineated by estimating the mean annual soil temperature at a depth of 50 cm(MAST50)according to the Chinese Soil Taxonomy(CST).However,delineating the STR of China remains a challenge due to the difficulties in accurately estimating *** objectives of this study were to explore environmental factors that influence the spatial variation of MAST50 and generate an STR map for *** temperature measurements at 40 and 80 cm depth were collected from 386 National Meteorological Stations in China during 1971–*** MAST50 was calculated as the average mean annual soil temperature(MAST)from 1971–2000 between 40 and 80 cm *** addition,2048 mean annual air temperature(MAAT)measurements from 1971 to 2000 were collected from the National Meteorological Stations across China.A zonal pedotransfer function(PTF)was developed based on the ensemble linear regression kriging model to predict the MAST50 in three topographic steps of *** results showed that MAAT was the most important variable related to the variation of *** zonal PTF was evaluated with a 10%validation dataset with a mean absolute error(MAE)of 0.66°C and root mean square error(RMSE)of 0.78°C,which were smaller than the unified model with MAE of 0.83°C and RMSE of 0.96°C,*** study demonstrated that the zonal PTF helped improve the accuracy of the predicted MAST50 *** on the prediction results,an STR map across China was generated to provide a consistent scientific base for the improvement and application of CST and land use support.

Application of 3D-printed prosthesis in revision surgery with large inflammatory pseudotumour and extensive bone defect: A case report

BACKGROUND Hip revision surgery is the final treatment option for the failure of artificial hip joints, but it is more difficult than the initial operation. For patients with hip joint loosening around the prosthesis combined with large inflammatory pseudotumours and large segment bone defects, hip revision is even more difficult, and clinical reports are *** SUMMARY Male, 59 years old. The patient underwent left hip replacement 35 years ago and was now admitted to hospital due to massive masses in the left thigh, shortening of the left lower extremity, and pain and lameness of the left hip joint. X-ray, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed prosthesis loosening, left acetabular bone defect(Parprosky IIIB type), and a bone defect of the left proximal femur(Parprosky IIIA type). Inflammatory pseudotumours were seen in the left hip and left thigh. Hip revision surgery was performed using a 3Dprinted custom acetabular prosthesis was used for hip revision surgery, which was produced by Arcam Electron Beam Melting system with Electron Beam Melting technology. The operation was successful, and the patient was followed up regularly after the operation. The custom-made acetabular prosthesis was well matched, the inflammatory pseudotumour was completely removed, the postoperative hip prosthesis was stable, and the old greater trochanter fracture was well reduced and fixed. The patient was partially weight-bearing with crutches 3 mo after the operation and walked with full weight-bearing after 6 mo. The hip prosthesis was stable, and there was no recurrence of inflammatory pseudotumours at the last follow-up. The Visual Analogue Scale was 3, and the Harris hip score was *** The use of 3D-printed personalized custom prostheses for complex hip revision surgery has satisfactory surgical results and has great clinical application value.
