Experimental investigation on the gravity driven discharge of cohesive particles from a silo with two outlets

An experimental study on the gravity driven discharge of cohesive particles from a silo with two outlets was *** discharge behaviors under the conditions that a single outlet was open and two outlets were open were investigated by varying the moisture content of the particles and the filling height of the particles in the *** results show that the discharge rate of the cohesive particles increases gradually at the beginning,then almost keeps constant,and finally drops *** discharge rate in case of two openings is around 1.1–1.6 times that in case of a single *** filling height leads to lower discharge rate in case of a single opening but results in higher discharge rate in case of two ***,the avalanche dynamics in case of a single opening was examined,and the mixing behavior of the cohesive particles was *** is observed that the discharge flow is promoted by the avalanche phenomenon in the silo,generating a general trend that the normalized mass of discharge increases with the filling height at higher moisture *** case of a single opening,the transition from mass flow to funnel flow favors the particle mixing,resulting in an increasing mixing index as the moisture content *** general,a better performance of mixing can be achieved in case of a single opening compared with in case of two *** study provides vital information for fundamental understanding of the gravity driven discharge of cohesive particles from the silo with multiple outlets.

Orientation of cylindrical particles in gas-solid circulating fluidized bed

The orientation of cylindrical particles in a gas-solid circulating fluidized bed was investigated by estab- lishing a three-dimensional Euler-Lagrange model on the basis of rigid kinetics, impact kinetics and gas-solid two-phase flow theory. The resulting simulation indicated that the model could well illustrate the orientation of cylindrical particles in a riser during fluidization. The influences of bed structure and operation parameters on orientation of cylindrical particles were then studied and compared with related experimental results. The simulation results showed that the majority of cylindrical particles move with small nutation angles in the riser, the orientation of cylindrical particles is affected more obviously by their positions than by their slenderness and local gas velocities. The simulation results well agree with experiments, thus validating the proposed model and computation.

Flow properties of three fuel powders

Flow and physical properties were measured for three fuel powders： sawdust, brown coal and hard coal. Besides physical properties, e.g., particle size, bulk density and moisture content, flowability was investigated using the standard shear testing technique of the Jenike shear cell. Flow functions of the three powders used for characterization of bulk flow and design of hoppers were determined, and then compared and discussed. The flow functions of the three powders are located in different regions： while brown coal and hard coal were classified respectively as easy flowing and cohesive material, sawdust was found in regions varying from cohesive to easy fowing at low consolidation stress. The measured effective angle of internal friction and angle of wall friction were 55° and 31.4° for sawdust; 36.2° and 26° for brown coal; and 43.3° and 27.8° for hard coal. Using the measured powder flow properties, Jenike＇s procedure was then followed to estimate and compare the critical hopper dimensions for mass flow of the three powders.

Sawdust discharge rate from aerated hoppers

This paper presents a numerical and experimental study of the discharge rate of sawdust from an aerated hopper as an important parameter in many industrial processes involving the handling of other granular materials. Numerical experiments are conducted by means of an Eulerian-Eulerian approach coupled with the kinetic theory of granular flow （KTGF）. Emphasis is given to the effects of particle size, hopper outlet width, hopper half angle, aeration height and air flow rate. The results show that the discharge rate is significantly affected by hopper outlet width, particle size and air flow rate, but is not sensitive to the hopper half angle and aeration height： increasing hopper outlet width or air flow rate increases discharge rate, while increasing particle size decreases discharge rate. Close agreement between numerical predictions and experimental results is obtained.

Numerical simulation on mixing dynamics of flexible filamentous particles in the transverse section of a rotary drum

Flexible filamentous particles are a special kind of particles and play a significant role in many industrial processes. The mixing dynamics of flexible filamentous particles in the transverse section of a rotary drum were analyzed numerically in two dimensions. First, a chain model of slender bodies was introduced for particle dynamic studies, and each individual particle as well as each segment of the particle was tracked during the process. Then, the bulk movement of particles in the transverse section of a rotary drum was explored numerically and mixing dynamics of the particles were further investigated with visual representation. To quantify the quality of mixing, the mixing rates were investigated to determine the mixing extent of particles in the rotary drum. Furthermore, the effects of rotational velocity, flight height and filling degree on mixing dynamics were examined in detail. Moreover, the numerical results were compared with experimental data, and reasonable agreements were obtained, The numerical analyses provide valuable insights into the mixing dynamics of flexible filamentous particles.

Improving the removal of fine particles by chemical agglomeration during the limestone-gypsum wet flue gas desulfurization process

Coal-fired power plants are considered a major source of fine particle emissions in *** to improve the removal efficiency of fine particles during the limestone-gypsum wet flue gas desulfurization(WFGD) process, a novel technology using chemical agglomeration to abate the emission of fine particles is presented herein. The relationship between fine particle emission and the proportion of fine particles in the desulfurization slurry was ***, the influence of chemical agglomeration on fine particle size distribution, both in the flue gas and slurry was experimentally investigated. When chemical agglomeration agents were added to the desulfurization slurry, the fine particle removal performance as well as the effects of the operation parameters was also explored via the simulated experimental *** results revealed that the fine particles in both the desulfurization slurry and flue gas were significantly enlarged after the addition of the agglomeration agents. This was more marked in the submicron particles. Thus, the proportion of fine particles(90% was maintained.

CFD-DEM simulation of spouting of corn-shaped particles

Three dimensionally coupled computational fluid dynamics （CFD） and discrete element method （DEM） were used to investigate the flow of corn-shaped particles in a cylindrical spouted bed with a conical base. The particle motion was modeled by the DEM, and the gas motion by the k-ε two-equation turbulent model. A two-way coupling numerical iterative scheme was used to incorporate the effects of gas-particle interactions in terms of momentum exchange. The corn-shaped particles were constructed by a multisphere method. Drag force, contact force, Saffman lift force, Magnus lift force, and gravitational force acting on each individual particle were considered in establishing the mathematical modeling. Calculations were carried out in a cylindrical spouted bed with an inside diameter of 200 mm, a height of 700 mm, and a conical base of 60°. Comparison of simulations with experiments showed the availability of the multi-sphere method in simulating spouting action with corn-shaped particles, but it depended strongly on the number and the arrangement of the spherical elements. Gas-solid flow patterns, pressure drop, particle velocity and particle concentration at various spouting gas velocity were discussed. The results showed that particle velocity reaches a maximum at the axis and then decreases gradually along the radial direction in the whole bed. Particle concentration increases along the radial direction in the spout region but decreases in the fountain region, while it is nearly constant in the annulus region. Increasing spouting gas velocity leads to larger pressure drop, remarkably increased speed of particle moving upward or downward, but decreased particle concentration.

Three-dimensional Simulation of Gas/Solid Flow in Spout-fluid Beds with Kinetic Theory of Granular Flow

A three-dimensional Eulerian multiphase model, with closure law according to the kinetic theory of granular flow, was used to study the gas/solid flow behaviors in spout-fluid beds. The influences of the coefficient of restitution due to non-ideal particle collisions on the simulated results were tested. It is demonstrated that the simulated result is strongly affected by the coefficient of restitution. Comparison of simulations with experiments in a small spout-fluid bed showed that an appropriate coefficient of restitution of 0.93 was necessary to simulate the flow characteristics in an underdesigned large size of spout-fluid bed coal gasifier with diameter of lm and height of 6m. The internal jet and gas/solid flow patterns at different operating conditions were obtained. The simulations show that an optimal gas/solid flow pattern for coal gasification is found when the spouting gas flow rate is equal to the fluidizing gas flow rate and the total of them is two and a half times the minimum fluidizing gas flow rate. Besides, the radial distributions of particle velocity and gas velocity show similar tendencies; the radial distributions of particle phase pressure due to particle collisions and the particle pseudo-temperature corresponding to the macroscopic kinetic energy of the random particle motion also show similar tendencies. These indicate that both gas drag force and particle collisions dominate the movement of particles.
