Fighting and aggressive sound determines larger male to win male-male competition in a bark beetle

Intrasexual selection occurs in male-male competition over access to females and usually results in the larger male *** much research has documented that size matters,little is known about how the larger male *** vale ns is an aggregating monogamous bark beetle in which males have large variation in body size and display intense competition over *** observation showed two males fight each other within the gallery by pushing/shoving and stridulated more when two males encountered each *** using two different-sized males synchronously competing showed that larger males won 95%of *** displacement experiments using muted and intact males of different or equal size were used to simulate male-male *** males displaced the smaller resident male in 90%of contests,while smaller males prevailed over larger residents in 6.7%of *** both males silenced,larger males displaced smaller males in 80%of con tests,while smaller males prevailed in 8%of con *** experiments using equal-sized males showed aggressive soundemitting males displaced muted males in 67%of contests,yet intact males displaced other intact males in only 37.5%of con *** analysis showed sound pressure level is an honest signal of body size and males chose soft sounds over loud aggressive sounds in ***,*** males have evolved dual behaviors,fighting and aggressive sounds associated with body size,to assess rivals to compete for a partner,gaining insights in male-male competition for this species and for other animals.

Synthesis of a Pair of Derivatives of N-Methylpyrrole Polyamide

A pair of derivatives of tetrameric N-methylpyrrole polyamide were synthesized in order to develop a new method for the study of interaction of the polyamide derivatives with DNA. Indole acetic acid and nicotinic acid were introduced to the polyamide in the synthesized compound, which showed an expected red shift in the UV spectrum. These compounds may function as a potential tool in the detection of the polyamide binding to DNA.

Numerical and theoretical study of load transfer behavior during cascading pillar failure

To further study the load transfer mechanism of roofemulti-pillarefloor system during cascading pillar failure(CPF),numerical simulation and theoretical analysis were carried out to study the three CPF modes according to the previous experimental study on treble-pillar specimens,*** failure mode(SFM),domino failure mode(DFM)and compound failure mode(CFM).Based on the finite element code rock failure process analysis(RFPA^(2D)),numerical models of treble-pillar specimen with different mechanical properties were established to reproduce and verify the experimental results of the three CPF *** results show that the elastic rebound of roofefloor system induced by pillar instability causes dynamic disturbance to adjacent pillars,resulting in sudden load increases and sudden jump displacement of adjacent *** phenomena of load transfer in the roofemulti-pillarefloor system,as well as the induced accelerated damage behavior in adjacent pillars,were discovered and *** addition,based on the catastrophe theory and the proposed mechanical model of treble-pillar specimen edisc spring group system,a potential function that characterizes the evolution characteristics of roof emulti-pillarefloor system was *** analytical expressions of sudden jump and energy release of treble-pillar specimenedisc spring group system of the three CPF modes were derived according to the potential *** numerical and theoretical results show good agreement with the experimental *** study further reveals the physical essence of load transfer during CPF of roof emulti-pillarefloor system,which provides references for mine design,construction and disaster prevention.

Field-based evidence for the enrichment of intrinsic antibiotic resistome stimulated by plant-derived fertilizer in agricultural soil

Animal manures have been demonstrated to enhance antibiotic resistance in agricultural ***,little is known about the effects of plant-derived fertilizer on soil antibiotic ***,metagenomic sequencing was used to investigate the effects of a plantderived fertilizer processed from sugarcane and beet on soil antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs)in a soybean field along crop growth *** profiles in the soils amended by plant-derived fertilizer were compared with those in the soils amended by chicken *** abundance and diversity of total ARGs in the soils amended by plant-derived fertilizer were significantly(P<0.05)elevated at the sprout stage,to a level comparable to that in the manured ***,unlike chicken manure mainly introducing manure-borne ARGs to soil,the plant-derived fertilizer was indicated to mainly enrich multidrug resistance genes in soil by nourishing indigenous *** with abundances in amended soils significantly(P<0.05)higher than in unamended soils at the sprout stage of soybean were considered as enriched *** in the abundance of the enriched ARGs was observed in both the amended soils from the sprout to the *** analysis further identified Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes as the primary bacterial taxa involved in the temporal variation of the enriched ARGs in the soils amended by plant-derived fertilizer,while in manured soils were Firmicutes and *** revealed by multivariate statistical analyses,variation of the enriched ARGs in the soils amended by plant-derived fertilizer was majorly attributed to the response of co-occurred bacteria to depleting nutrients,which was different from the failed establishment of manure-borne bacteria in the manured *** study provided field-based evidence that plant-derived fertilizer stimulated the intrinsic antibiotic resistome,and proposed attention to the un-perceived risk since some clinically relevant ARGs originate and evolve fr

Renewable-energy-driven nitrate(NO_(3)^(−))electroreduction to ammonia(NH_(3))(NERA)has been an attractive technology for decarbonizing NH_(3)production and wastewater *** NERA efficiency requires electrocatalysts that are earth-abundant and show fantastic *** we report a semiempirical activity descriptor of eg occupancy(of surface B-site cations)for identifying inexpensive perovskite oxides with extremely high efficacy toward *** establish the descriptor by systematic investigations of more than 10 perovskite *** investigations demonstrate that their intrinsic NERA activities display a volcano-shaped dependence on eg occupancy and the optimized intrinsic activities are accessible at near-1 eg *** could plausibly be attributed to the favorable overlaps between surface adsorbates and vertically-oriented eg *** importantly,utilizing this descriptor,we predict a highly active,selective,and durable NERA electrocatalyst with a composition of Ba_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)Co_(0.8)Fe_(0.2)O_(3−δ)(BSCF).Because of its close-to-1 e_(g)occupancy(i.e.~1.2),the BSCF features a superior NH_(3)production rate of 0.12 g·h^(−1)·mg_(cat.)^(−1)(Faradaic efficiency of 97.8%)that is at top of the volcano plot,and substantially outperforms most NERA electrocatalysts reported in literature.

A weakly-solvated ether-based electrolyte for fast-charging graphite anode

Weakly-solvated electrolytes(WSEs)utilizing solvents with weak coordination ability offer advantages for low-potential graphite anode owing to their facile desolvation process and anions-derived inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)***,these electrolytes face challenges in achieving a balance between the weak solvation affinity and high ionic conductivity,as well as between rigid inorganic-rich SEI and flexible SEI for long-term ***,we introduce 1,3-dioxolane(DOL)and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-imide(LiTFSI)as functional additives into a WSE based on nonpolar cyclic ether(1,4-dioxane).The well-formulated WSE not only preserves the weakly solvated features and anion-dominated solvation sheath,but also utilizes DOL to contribute organic species for stabilizing the SEI *** from these merits,the optimized electrolyte enables graphite anode with excellent fast-charging performance(210 mAh/g at 5 C)and outstanding cycling stability(600 cycles with a capacity retention of 82.0%at room temperature and 400 cycles with a capacity retention of 80.4%at high temper-ature).Furthermore,the fabricated LiNi_(0.8)Co_(0.1)Mn_(0.1)O_(2)||graphite full cells demonstrate stable operation for 140 cycles with high capacity retention of 80.3%.This work highlights the potential of tailoring solvation sheath and interphase properties in WSEs for advanced electrolyte design in graphite-based lithium-ion batteries.

Flexural performance of joints is critical for prefabricated *** study presents a novel channel steel-bolt(CB)joint for prefabricated subway ***-scale tests are carried out to investigate the flexural behavior of the CB joint under the design loads of the test-case *** addition,a three dimensional(3D)finite element(FE)model of the CB joint is established,incorporating viscous contact to simulate the bonding and detachment behaviors of the interface between channel steel and *** on the 3D FE model,the study examines the flexural bearing mechanism and influencing factors for the flexural performance of the CB *** results indicate that the flexural behavior of the CB joint exhibits significant nonlinear characteristics,which can be divided into four *** illustrate the piecewise linearity of the bending moment-rotational angle curve,a four-stage simplified model is proposed,which is easily applicable in engineering *** study reveals that axial force can enhance the flexural capacity of the CB joint,while the preload of the bolt has a negligible *** flexural capacity of the CB joint is approximate twice the value of the designed bending moment,demonstrating that the joint is suitable for the test-case station.
