Tuina alleviates neuropathic pain through regulate the activation of microglia and the secretion of inflammatory cytokine in spinal cord

OBJECTIVE: To observe the analgesic effects of Tuina on neuropathic pain(NPP) and the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Forty-eight Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats were assigned by random into three treatment groups: sham, chronic constriction injury(CCI), and Tuina. Each group contained sixteen rats. CCI model was generated by ligating the right sciatic nerve. Behavioral changes of CCI were assessed by the paw withdrawal threshold(PWT) and paw withdrawal latency(PWL). In addition, biochemical techniques such as immunofluorescence staining, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) and Western blotting were used to profile levels of microglia activation and inflammatory factors in the spinal dorsal horn(SDH) of rats. Tuina(clockwise pressing and rubbing) was performed at Chengshan(BL57) to observe the analgesic effects on CCI rats and the underlying mechanisms. RESULTS: Rats with CCI experienced significant reduction in the PWT and PWL of the right hind paw relative to CCI group at day 3. Tuina treatment rescued this situation significantly on days 10 and 14. Besides, Iba-1, microglia M1 receptor CD68, tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), and interleukin-1β(IL-1β) were higher in the right SDH for CCI group compared to the sham group on day 14. As expected, Tuina partially downregulated the CCI-induced overexpressed Iba-1, CD68, TNF-α, and IL-1β in the SDH of CCI model. CONCLUSION: Tuina induces a time-dependent cumulative analgesic effect in CCI rats by inhibiting the activation of microglia and the secretion of IL-1β and TNF-α in SDH.

Effectiveness of Liu-zi-jue exercise on coronavirus disease 2019 in the patients: a randomized controlled trial

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Liu-zi-jue exercise on the respiratory symptoms, quality of life, and mental health of patients with mild coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19). METHODS: A single-center randomized controlled trial was conducted with 104 patients with mild COVID-19. The patients were randomly assigned to the Liu-zi-jue plus conventional therapy group and conventional therapy group. The outcome measures included Modified Borg Dyspnea Scale(MBDS) score, Patient Health Questionnaire-9(PHQ-9) score, Fatigue Scale-14(FS-14), respiratory symptoms, and vital signs. Data were collected on the first and sixth days of hospitalization and on the discharge day. RESULTS: Repeated-measures ANOVA revealed that the whole scales all showed a downward trend in the two groups(all P < 0.05). The results of single-group effect suggested that the whole scale score in the intervention group was significantly lower than that in the control group at the sixth day of hospitalization. Compared with the control group, only the MBDS, expectoration, and FS-14 scores showed significantly lower scores at the discharge day(P < 0.001, P = 0.011, P = 0.002). Comparison within the group showed that all the variables were significantly different at the three time points with a decreasing trend(P < 0.05), except for the PHQ-9 and expectoration scores(P = 0.331, 0.052). All patients’ vital signs remained within a stable normal range throughout the hospital stay. CONCLUSION: The results suggested that Liu-zi-jue exercise as a complementary and alternative therapy showed beneficial effects on improving the symptoms(shortness of breath, fatigue, and cough), quality of life, and mental health of patients with mild COVID-19.

Effect of Chinese massage(Tui Na) on isokinetic muscle strength in patients with knee osteoarthritis

OBJECTIVE: Chinese massage(Tui Na) is one of the most popular Traditional Chinese Medicine remedies for knee osteoarthritis(OA). Several studies have subjectively evaluated the effect of Chinese massage on knee OA through self-assessment questionnaires; however, very few studies have objectively assessed the effect by measuring knee muscle strength. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of Chinese massage in improving knee extensor and flexor muscle strength in patients with knee OA.METHODS: Thirty patients with knee OA received Chinese massage therapy three times per week for 2 weeks. Patients completed pre- and post-treatment Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) pain questionnaires, and pre- and post-treatment knee muscle strength was evaluated using the Biodex Multi-Joint System 3. Isokinetic muscle strength measurements were performed at 60 degrees/s and 180 degrees/s. The peak torque(PT), peak torque/body weight(PT/BW), total work(TW), average power(AP), hamstring/quadriceps(H/Q), and range of motion(ROM) values were recorded separately for flexors and extensors.RESULTS: Chinese massage therapy significantly improved knee pain as assessed by the VAS in patients with knee OA(P < 0.05). Post-treatment values were significantly greater than pre-treatment values in the extensor muscles for PT(right P =0.013, left P = 0.001), PT/BW(right P = 0.008, left P =0.001) and TW(right P = 0.036, left P = 0.004) at 60 degrees/s. The AP increased significantly after treatment in the flexor muscles in the right knee(P =0.009) and the extensor muscles in the left knee(P = 0.001). There were no significant differences in pre- and post-treatment ROM and H/Q at 60 degrees/s and 180 degrees/s.CONCLUSION: Chinese massage therapy decreased pain and may improve extensor muscle strength in patients with knee OA, but does not appear to improve ROM.

模块化建筑阵列多调谐质量阻尼系统的实现与减震研究

基于建筑模块化和悬挂楼板减震的原理提出了悬挂楼板模块体系(modularized suspended floors system,MSFS)。利用楼板作为质量块,组成分布阵列式多调谐质量阻尼器(distributed array multiple tuned mass dampers,d-array-MTMDs)系统。通过输入32条远场和近场地震动记录进行时程分析,对平均调谐频率比η、调谐频带宽度系数β、调谐阻尼比ζ_(T)、TMD数量n以及主结构层数N,共5个参数展开研究。结果表明:d-array-MTMDs的减震效果优于普通MTMDs系统;ζ_(T)对系统减震性能影响较小,当η为0.7~1.0、β为2.0时,系统具有更好的减震效果;当n大于某阈值时,系统的减震效果趋于稳定,阈值与η线性正相关,与ζ_(T)非线性负相关。随着模块建筑层数的增加,系统也能维持较好的减震效果。

Accumulation and Output of Heavy Metals by the Invasive Plant Spartina alterniflora in a Coastal Salt Marsh

Spartina alterniflora is a foreign introduced species and has far-reaching effects on salt marsh ecosystems, particularly on the biogeochemical cycle of heavy metals. To ascertain whether the invasive plant Spartina alterniflora Loisel is a source of metals in the environment, we determined the bimonthly concentrations of heavy metals, chromium(Cr), lead(Pb), copper(Cu), zinc(Zn),and manganese(Mn), in the roots, stems, and leaves of S. alterniflora from a typical semidiurnal tidal zone in the coastal area of northern Jiangsu Province, China. Based on the measurements, we calculated annual metal primary accumulation and output. To calculate the annual output of heavy metals from S. alterniflora, a new method that calculates the annual rate of biomass loss and decomposition was developed. The annual primary accumulation of Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Mn was 19.08, 84.19, 63.74, 442.58, and774.66 mg m^(-2), respectively, and the annual output from S. alterniflora to the surrounding environment was 4.01, 18.09, 14.00, 97.11,and 164.28 mg m^(-2), respectively. Spartina alterniflora only provides temporary storage, and its absorption of heavy metals could be used to remediate contaminated soil and for phytomining. The heavy metals released by S. alterniflora to the environment cannot be ignored; thus, S. alterniflora should be considered a source of metal contamination. Therefore, when we evaluate the remarkable ability of certain plant species to concentrate metals in their tissues, the balance between heavy metal accumulation and output should be considered.

Gait analysis of patients with knee osteoarthritis before and after Chinese massage treatment

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Chinese massage therapy in patients with knee osteoarthritis(OA) by measuring lower-limb gait parameters. We recruited 20 women with knee OA,who then underwent Chinese massage therapy three times per week for 2 weeks. The patients underwent gait evaluation using a six-camera infrared motion analysis system. They completed Western Ontario and Mc Master Universities Osteoarthritis Index questionnaires before and after treatment. We calculated the forward speed,step width,step length,total support time percentage,initial double support time percentage,and single support time percentage. We also measured the angles at the knee,hip,and ankle during the stance phase of walking. The results showed statistically significant mean differences in knee pain relief,alleviation of stiffness,and physical function enhancement after therapy(P < 0.05). The patients gained significantly faster gait speed,greater step width,and increased total support time percentage after the Chinese massage therapy(P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the range of motion or initial contact angles of the knee,hip,or ankle during the stance phase of walking. We concluded that Chinese massage is a beneficial complementary treatment and an alternative therapy choice for patients with knee OA for short-term pain relief. Chinese massage may improve walking ability for these patients.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of Taijiquan practice on knee proprioception in patients with knee osteoarthritis(OA).METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial comparing Taijiquan with a control condition(wellness education) in patients with knee OA. The patients participated in either a 60-min Taijiquan session three times weekly or a 60-min weekly educational session, for 24 consecutive weeks. The primary outcomes were changes in knee proprioception. Secondary outcomes were changes in the Western Ontario and Mc Master University Osteoarthritis Index(WOMAC).RESULTS: After 24 weeks, compared with the control group, the Taijiquan group demonstrated better improvements in the joint position sense in knee flexion(left:-2.12°; right:-2.02°), and knee extension(left:-2.22°; right:-1.54°). In addition,the Taijiquan group showed significantly greater improvements in the WOMAC scores(P < 0.05) for knee pain(left:-3.17 points; right:-3.74 points),stiffness(left:-2.43 points; right:-2.13 points),and physical function(left:-10.99 points; right:-8.00 points), compared with the control group.CONCLUSION: A 24-week Taijiquan practice resulted in a significant improvement in knee proprioception in patients with knee OA. The present findings add increasing evidence regarding the clinical benefits of Taijiquan as a therapeutic modality for patients to improve the reflex protection of knee joints against potentially harmful forces.

目的研究腰椎间盘突出症(lumbar disc herniation,LDH)患者在坐立过程中疼痛对腰椎和髋关节力矩的影响。方法应用AMTI测力台采集20例健康对照与20例LDH受试者的动力学数据,通过统计参数映射(statistical parametric mapping,SPM)分析两组受试者坐立任务中腰椎与髋关节在矢状面和冠状面的力矩差异。结果与健康对照组相比,LDH受试者从站立回到坐位过程中腰椎最大屈曲力矩与髋关节最大内收力矩明显增高(P<0.05)。SPM分析显示,在站立初期阶段(37%~42%),LDH组髋关节外展力矩大于健康对照组,存在统计学差异(P=0.007)。结论LDH受试者在坐立过程中腰椎骨盆不够稳定,尤其站立静止阶段,难以使身体达到平衡状态,需增加髋关节外展力矩来维持骨盆稳定。在临床评估治疗中应重点关注脊柱与骨盆的稳定功能。

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the analgesic effect of Tuina mainly from mechanically sensitive ion channels in peripheral myelinated nerve fibers.METHODS: A total of 40 healthy and pathogen-free adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in the study [weight:(220.0 ± 1.4) g, Shanghai Slac Laboratory Animal Co., Ltd., Shanghai, China; license No. Shanghai ICP 05033115]. The rats were housed in cages with free access to water and food in a temperature-controlled room [(22 ± 1) ℃] and12-h/12-h light-dark cycle. Thirty-two rats were randomly divided into five groups: naive, sham, chronic compression of dorsal root ganglion(CCD), Tuina(7 d) and Tuina(21 d). CCD rat model was established via unilateral DRG compression by"L"liked steel bar. Chinese Tuina treatment was accepted once per day. Behavior monitoring of paw withdrawal threshold(PWT) and paw withdrawal latency(PWL) were tested. The expression of Piezo1 and Piezo2 in myelinated nerve fiber were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and Western-blotting.RESULTS: There was a high expression of Piezo2 and a low expression of Piezo1 in the naive and CCD groups. In contrast, the expression of Piezo2 was down regulated and Piezo1 was increased after a period of Tuina. There was significant difference(P ≤ 0.05) between the groups.CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that Tuina therapy can increase the expression of Piezo2 and decrease the expression of Piezo1 in the test rats.The different changes in the expressions of Piezo1 and Piezo2 may play an important role in alleviating CCD-induced allodynia and hyperalgesia.

Preparation and Supercapacitive Performance of CuFe_(2)O_(4) Hollow-Spherical Nanoparticles

Spinel-type CuFe_(2)O_(4)nanoparticles were syn-thesized by a solvother-mal method using ethy-lene glycol as solvent and polyvinylpyrroli-done(PVP)as disper-sant.The characteriza-tion results showed that the average diameter of the hollow-spherical CuFe_(2)O_(4)was approximately 100 nm with homogeneous morphology and negligible agglomeration.CuFe_(2)O_(4)was used as the active electrode material to explore its su-percapacitive properties in different concentrations of KOH electrolytes.It was found that the CuFe_(2)O_(4)hollow-spherical nanoparticles exhibit potential electronic performance in superca-pacitor,with a specific capacitance of 368.2 F/g and capacitance stability retention of 91.0%after 2000 cycles at the current density of 5 A/g in 3 mol/L KOH electrolyte.The present findings demonstrate that the CuFe_(2)O_(4)electrode materials can have important implications with practical prospects in energy storage systems.
