Efficacyand Safetyof Huashi Baidu Granules in Treating Patients with SARS-CoV-2Omicron Variant: A Single-Center Retrospective Cohort Study

Objective:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Huashi Baidu Granules(HSBD)in treating patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)Omicron variant.Methods:A single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted during COVID-19 Omicron epidemic in the Mobile Cabin Hospital of Shanghai New International Expo Center from April 1st to May 23rd,2022.All COVID-19 patients with asymptomatic or mild infection were assigned to the treatment group(HSBD users)and the control group(non-HSBD users).After propensity score matching in a 1:1 ratio,496 HSBD users of treatment group were matched by propensity score to 496 non-HSBD users.Patients in the treatment group were administrated HSBD(5 g/bag)orally for 1 bag twice a day for 7 consecutive days.Patients in the control group received standard care and routine treatment.The primary outcomes were the negative conversion time of nucleic acid and negative conversion rate at day 7.Secondary outcomes included the hospitalized days,the time of the first nucleic acid negative conversion,and new-onset symptoms in asymptomatic patients.Adverse events(AEs)that occurred during the study were recorded.Further subgroup analysis was conducted in vaccinated(378 HSBD users and 390 non-HSBD users)and unvaccinated patients(118 HSBD users and 106 non-HSBD users).Results:The median negative conversion time of nucleic acid in the treatment group was significantly shortened than the control group[3 days(IQR:2-5 days)vs.5 days(IQR:4-6 days);P<0.01].The negative conversion rate of nucleic acid in the treatment group were significantly higher than those in the control group at day 7(91.73%vs.86.90%,P=0.014).Compared with the control group,the hospitalized days in the treatment group were significantly reduced[10 days(IQR:8-11 days)vs.11 days(IQR:10.25-12 days);P<0.01].The time of the first nucleic acid negative conversion had significant differences between the treatment and control groups[3 days(IQR:2-4 days)vs.5 days(IQR:4-6 days);P<0.01].The incidence of new-onset sym

Electroacupuncture Promotes Angiogenesis in Mice with Cerebral Ischemia by Inhibiting miR-7

Objective To observe the angiogenesis effect of electroacupuncture(EA)at Shuigou acupoint(GV 26)in the treatment of cerebral ischemia,and explore the value of miRNA-7(miR-7)in it.Methods First,48 mice were randomly divided into sham operation,middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO)model,and EA treatment groups.Then 9 mice were divided into carrier control group,miR-7 knockout group and miR-7 overexpression group(n=3 each group).Finally,20 mice were divided into model and carrier control group,model and miR-7 knockout group,EA treatment and carrier control group and EA treatment and miR-7 overexpression group,with 3–6 mice in each group.The MCAO model was established in the MCAO and EA groups.Neurological deficit score and 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride(TTC)staining were used to evaluate the severity of cerebral ischemia.Hematoxylin-eosin staining was used to describe basic pathological changes.Immunohistochemistry was used to quantify cerebral microvessel density.Real-time PCR and Western blot were used to detect the expression of miR-7 and its downstream target genes Krüppel-like factor 4/vascular endothelial growth factor(KLF4/VEGF)and angiopoietin-2(ANG-2)in the ischemic cerebral cortex.Results After EA,neurological deficit scores and infarction volumes decreased,and the density of cerebral microvessels increased.In the MCAO group,miR-7 expression was higher than that in the sham group(P<0.01).After EA at GV 26,miR-7 expression decreased(P<0.01)and the expression of downstream target genes KLF4/VEGF and ANG-2 increased as compared with the MCAO group(P<0.01).After EA combined with overexpression of miR-7,the expression of downstream target genes KLF4/VEGF and ANG-2 decreased compared to the control EA group(P<0.01).After miR-7 knockdown,the expression of KLF4/VEGF and ANG-2 increased(P<0.05 or P<0.01).Conclusions EA could promote angiogenesis in MCAO mice likely by inhibiting the expression of miR-7 and relieving inhibition of downstream target genes KLF4/VEGF and ANG-2.

The investigation endorsed the convective flow of Carreau nanofluid over a stretched surface in presence of entropy generation optimization.The novel dynamic of viscous dissipation is utilized to analyze the thermal mechanism of magnetized flow.The convective boundary assumptions are directed in order to examine the heat and mass transportation of nanofluid.The thermal concept of thermophoresis and Brownian movements has been re-called with the help of Buongiorno model.The problem formulated in dimensionless form is solved by NDSolve MATHEMATICA.The graphical analysis for parameters governed by the problem is performed with physical applications.The affiliation of entropy generation and Bejan number for different parameters is inspected in detail.The numerical data for illustrating skin friction,heat and mass transfer rate is also reported.The motion of the fluid is highest for the viscosity ratio parameter.The temperature of the fluid rises via thermal Biot number.Entropy generation rises for greater Brinkman number and diffusion parameter.

Simple-structured hydrophilic sensors for sweat uric acid detection with laser-engraved polyimide electrodes and cellulose paper substrates

Accurate detection of uric acid(UA)is crucial for diagnosing gout,yet traditional sweat-based UA sensors continue to face challenges posed by complex and costly electrode fabrication methods,as well as weakly hydrophilic substrates.Here,we designed and developed simple,low-cost,and hydrophilic sweat UA detection sensors constructed by carbon electrodes and cellulose paper substrates.The carbon electrodes were made by carbonized polyimide films through a simple,one-step laser engraving method.Our electrodes are porous,possess a large specific surface area,and are flexible and conductive.The substrates were composed of highly hydrophilic cellulose paper that can effectively collect,store,and transport sweat.The constructed electrodes demonstrate high sensitivity of 0.4μA Lμmol^(-1)cm^(-2),wide linear range of 2–100μmol/L.In addition,our electrodes demonstrate high selectivity,excellent reproducibility,high flexibility,and outstanding stability against mechanical bending,temperature variations,and extended storage periods.Furthermore,our sensors have been proven to provide reliable results when detecting UA levels in real sweat and on real human skin.We envision that these sensors hold enormous potential for use in the prognosis,diagnosis,and treatment of gout.

The interfacial characteristics of the Li metal anode(LMA)play a crucial role in its overall performance.Despite various materials being applied to modify the interface,a comprehensive understanding of their specific mechanisms remains to be investigated.Herein,we have prepared carbon cloth(CC)frameworks with their surfaces modified using ferromagnetic metal/LiF heterogeneous films(T^(M)-LiF-CC)as the substrate for LMA,which exhibit superior electrochemical performance.Utilizing ferromagnetic Co as a representative example,our study demonstrates that the enhanced performance of Co-LiF-CC,compared to bare CC,is attributed to the spinpolarized interface contributed by the Co/LiF heterostructure.Co and LiF play individual roles in redistributing electrons and Li^(+)to promote homogeneous Li deposition.Co nanoparticles play a crucial role in generating strong surface capacitance by storing electrons in spin-split bands,while LiF,with low surface diffusion barriers,ensures fast transportation of Li^(+).The Co-LiF-CC@Li electrodes deliver long lives of 7400 and 3600 h at 1 and 2 mA·cm^(-2)in symmetric cells,respectively;moreover,they enable full batteries with high and durable capacities,particularly when the N/P ratios are low(3.3 or even 1.7).

Multiscale control of MnO2 growth via [WO6]-perturbed[MnO6] assembly toward a favorable balance between capacitance and rate performance

Although pseudocapacitive manganese dioxide（MnO2） integrates the high-power merit of carbonaceous materials with the high-energy merit of battery-type materials,it still has a long way to go in achieving a more satisfactory balance of higher energy and power density,and in decoupling the relationship of structural characteristics with energy storage performance.To realize such goals,a bottom-up [WO6]-perturbed [MnO6] assembly strategy has been developed here due to their similar structure,yet mismatched lattice parameters.This facile protocol is capable of finely controlling the morphology and crystal structure of MnO2by adjusting its internal[WO6] concentration.Therefore,the as-prepared WxMnO2is treated as an ideal platform to scrutinize the correlations of the structure with the energy storage performance.The operando Raman spectra and finite element analysis have fully demonstrated the superiority of the locally ordered defects-enriched structure of W0.02-MnO2,which could reach a favorable balance between the ion diffusion equilibrium time and the number of active sites.As a result,the W0.02-MnO2is able to deliver a high capacitance of 292 F·g-1at a current density of 1 A·g-1and a remarkable rate performance with a 60% capacity retention at a current density of 50 A·g-1.The further unveiled structure-performance relationship provides a guideline for the design of better pseudocapacitive energy storage devices.

Tongue and pulse features of 668 asymptomatic patients infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 omicron variant in Shanghai

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the tongue and pulse manifestations in asymptomatic coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) cases in Shanghai. METHODS: We conducted a clinical study of 668 patients with asymptomatic infections in which we analyzed the tongue and pulse features in the Shanghai New International Expo Center mobile cabin hospital. The medical records of the patients, including tongue color, tongue coating, and pulse manifestations, were reviewed by healthcare workers. RESULTS: In total, 668 COVID-19 cases were included in the study. Patient age ranged from 5 to 96 years, with a median of 44.0(IQR 33.0-53.0) years. Among the patients, 6.14% had comorbidities. The most common comorbid condition was diabetes(1.65%), followed by hypertension(0.89%), coronary heart disease(0.89%), thrombotic diseases(0.89%), congestive heart failure(0.60%), and stroke(0.45%). Pink-red(75.4%) was the most common tongue color, followed by red(23.4%) and pale red(1.2%). Tongue coating color and thickness were classified as white fur(9.28%), thin and yellow fur(48.65%), white greasy fur(8.98%), yellow greasy fur(24.70%), and less coating(8.39%). In addition, a large number of patients(n = 300, 44.91%) presented superficial and rapid pulses, and 250 patients(37.4%) exhibited a slippery pulse. CONCLUSION: Our preliminary results showed that wind, heat, and dampness were the main etiologies of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 Omicron(B.1.1.529) variant infection in traditional Chinese medicine. Furthermore, the main symptoms of the disease may be wind-heat invading the lung syndrome or damp-heat with the exuberance of virulence syndrome, which is of most significance in COVID-19 treatment.

Objective: To assess the effect and safety of Reyanning Mixture(RYN) in treating asymptomatic or mild severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-Co V-2) infection in children and adolescents. Methods: This is a prospective, open-label, randomized control ed trial. Patients aged 1–17 years and diagnosed with asymptomatic or mild coronavirus disease-2019(COVID-19) were assigned to an intervention group(RYN plus standard care) and a control group(standard care) according to a randomization list. The primary outcomes were SARS-Co V-2 negative conversion time. Secondary outcomes included negative conversion rate on days 3 and 7, hospital length of stay, symptom relief rate, new-onset symptoms of asymptomatic infected patients, and progressive disease rate. The cycle threshold(Ct) values of ORF1ab or N genes were also tested. Results: A total of 214 patients in the intervention group and 217 in the control group were analyzed. The SARS-CoV-2 negative conversion time was significantly shortened in the intervention group [5 days(interquartile range(IQR): 5–6) vs. 7 days(IQR: 6–7), P0.05). Symptoms of cough were significantly improved(82.2% vs. 70.0%, P=0.02) and wheezing was significantly reduced(0.7% vs. 12.9%, P<0.01) in the intervention group compared with the control group. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Baidu Jieduan Granules(BDJDG) to treat common type coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19). Methods: This multicenter, retrospective, and observational clinical trial included 230 common COVID-19 patients in Leishenshan, Huangshi, and Laohekou Hospitals in Wuhan from January 21 to March 26, 2020. The included patients were further divided into two subgroups according to the use of supplemental oxygen, mild and moderate groups. During the first 14 d of hospitalization, all patients were administered BDJDG combined with conventional Western medicine, and observed for continuous 28 d. Primary outcomes were disease progression rate and discharge rate. Secondary outcomes included negative conversion time of nucleic acid, hospitalization duration, clinical symptom subsidence time, and symptom regression rate. Results: A total of 230 common COVID-19 patients were analyzed(138 in moderate group and 92 in mild group). By day 28, the disease progression rate was 4.3% and the discharge rate was 95.7%. All mild cases recovered and were discharged from hospital. The median negative conversion time of nucleic acid of all 230 COVID-19 patients was 12 d [inter-quartile range(IQR) 3.5–17], the median hospitalization duration was 15 d(IQR 12–20). The median time to fever, cough, and fatigue recovery was 4 d(IQR 2–6), 8 d(IQR 5–12), and 8 d(IQR 5–11), respectively. The recovery rate of fever, cough, and fatigue was 94.6%, 90.5%, and 93.5%. The median time to clinical improvement was 12 d(IQR 10–17). Compared with the baseline, total leukocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte, and platelet counts were all increased significantly on days 7 and 14(P<0.01). C-reactive protein markedly increased on day 3 and significantly decreased on days 7 and 14(P<0.01). No serious adverse events occurred during treatment. Conclusion: BDJDG may be effective and safe for treatment of common type COVID-19.(Registration No. ChiCTR2000030836)

Contextual Word Inferencing Strategy and Its Pedagogical Values

Inferencing new words’meanings from context is identified as a key vocabulary learning skill and one of the three principal strategies for handling low-frequency words(Nation,1990).It is also considered an effective reading skill.This paper tends to discuss its positive pedagogical implication to Chinese university students.By discussing the two different teaching Procedures of Clarke and Nation’s(1980)and Bruton and Samuda’s(1981),a practical instruction of the strategy is proposed.Nevertheless,the strategy’s limitations are taken into account as well in the final part.
