Centrifuge experiment on the penetration test for evaluating undrained strength of deep-sea surface soils

Rapid advances in deep-sea mining engineering have created an urgent need for the accurate evaluation of the undrained strength of marine soils,especially surface soils.Significant achievements have been made using full-flow penetration penetrometers to evaluate marine soil strength in the deep penetration;however,a method considering the effect of ambient water on the surface penetration needs to be established urgently.In this study,penetrometers with multiple probes were developed and used to conduct centrifuge experiments on South China Sea soil and kaolin clay.First,the forces on the probes throughout the penetration process were systematically analyzed and quantified.Second,the spatial influence zone was determined by capturing the resistance changes and sample crack development,and the penetration depth for a sample to reach a stable failure mode was given.Third,the vane shear strength was used to invert the penetration resistance factor of the ball and determine the range of the penetration resistance factor values.Furthermore,a methodology to determine the penetration resistance factors for surface marine soils was established.Finally,the effect of the water cavity above various probes in the surface penetration was used to formulate an internal mechanism for variations in the penetration resistance factor.

A novel conceptual design of a biomimetic oral implant and its biomechanical effect on the repairment of a large mandibular defect

This study aimed to propose a novel biomimetic design strategy of an oral implant and to numerically examine its biomechanical effect according to clinical interests.The designed implant conceptually mimicked the morphology and elastic modulus of the mandibular bone.Basing on a CT-image-based patient-specific reconstruction of the tumor-excised mandible,the biomechanical effects of the implants with three materials(PEEK/n-HA/CF,PEEK/HA and Ti6Al4V),two surgical conditions(removed and retained muscles),and two postoperative stages(early and late)were fully investigated by a static finite element analysis.Moreover,according to clinical interests(e.***.failure and stability of the implant and rivets),maximum von Mises stresses and strains of the implant and rivets,maximum implant-bone gap in the early postoperative stage,and maximum von Mises stress of the mandible were mainly analyzed.The results showed that the implant composed of Ti6Al4V material was suitable for the current design strategy with respect to the other two PEEK-based materials.Although the implants in the muscle-retained surgical condition had relative greater indices compared to the muscle-removed surgical condition,the index difference between the two conditions was slight.The biomechanical indices indicating the failure and loosening risks of implant and rivets were much reduced in the late postoperative stage with respect to the early postoperative stage due to the osteointegration at the implant-bone interface.Generally,the proposed novel design strategy could be useful to guide the design of the oral implant addressing different implant materials and surgical conditions,and further made proper suggestion to clinicians and patients.

Rapid identification of electricigens via silver-plated photonic crystal filters

Short acquisition time and small volumes of incubated bacterial cultures are ideal for the routine and rapid identification or screening of electricigens in research and applications of microbial fuel cells. In this study, a functional substrate based on colloidal photonic crystals (PCs) was developed both for the filtration and identification of electricigens by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The fabrication of the substrate was simplified by electroless plating of silver on filtration-based self-assembled PCs on a filter membrane. The silver-plated ordered PC structure provided a 107-fold enhancement of Raman intensity compared to that obtained with a bare PC substrate. The substrate allowed for a “drop and measure” method of bacterial identification within 5 min with a 5 μL sample volume only. The results showed that not only the electricigens Geobacter sp. and Shewanella sp. could be discriminated with species and strain specificity, but also Geobacter sp. and pilus-mutated Geobacter sp. strains. The developed silver-plated PC filter offers tremendous opportunities in energetic, environmental, and clinical applications.

Design of an MRI quadrature-data acquisition card

A design of a quadrature-data acquisition card based on peripheral component interconnect (PCI) bus for mini-type magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system is reported. It uses two high speed analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) to sample the MRI signals and two static random access memories (SRAMs) to store the data which will be read to the computer by PCI bus after sampling. All the logic control signals on the card are generated by the field programmable gate array (FPGA). The software Foundation3.1 is used to design the FPGA and achieve useful result after simulating and implementing. The card has some merits that normal commercial cards do not have. For example, the sampling parameters can be varied according to different pulse sequences.

Photonic crystal(PC)barcodes are a new type of spectrum-encoding microcarriers used in multiplex high-throughput bioassays,such as broad analysis of biomarkers for clinical diagnosis,gene expression,and cell culture.Unfortunately,most of these existing PC barcodes suffered from undesired features,including difficult spectrum-signal acquisition,weak mechanical strength,and high ontology fluorescence,which limited their development to real applications.To address these limitations,we report a new type of structural color-encoded PC barcodes.The barcodes are fabricated by the assembly of monodisperse polydopamine-(PDA-)coated silica(PDA@SiO_(2))nanoparticles using a droplet-based microfluidic technique and followed by pyrolysis of PDA@SiO_(2)(C@SiO_(2))barcodes.Because of the templated carbonization of adhesive PDA,the prepared C@SiO_(2)PC beads were endowed with simultaneous easy-to-identify structural color,high mechanical strength,and ultralow ontology fluorescence.We demonstrated that the structural colored C@SiO_(2)barcodes not only maintained a high structural stability and good biocompatibility during the coculturing with fibroblasts and tumor cells capture but also achieved an enhanced fluorescentreading signal-to-noise ratio in the fluorescence-reading detection.These features make the C@SiO_(2)PC barcodes versatile for expansive application in fluorescence-reading-based multibioassays.

为研究近距离煤层下行开采时采动影响规律及下煤层巷道的合理位置,采用FLAC3D数值模拟手段,分析了上煤层开采时覆岩运移规律,研究工作面开采前后邻近巷道及小煤柱应力变化,对比了遗留煤柱下回风顺槽合理布置方式。研究结果表明:上煤层开采顶板扰动影响区域由下向上垂直应力逐渐由“拱形”转化为“梯形”再转化为“双峰”结构,顶板位移曲线向上分布呈现“碗状”结构;上煤层开采对本工作面巷道影响规律相似,下煤层靠近遗留煤柱的回风顺槽受采动影响应力集中更加明显;下工作面巷道采用内错布置式可一定程度减小受上煤层的采动影响,避免遗留煤柱应力集中作用,较外错和重叠布置更加稳定。

作为一种常见的海洋地质灾害,海底滑坡会对油气管道的安全造成巨大威胁。由于海洋底流的冲刷作用,海底管道往往会悬跨于海床之上,稳定性较差。当悬跨管道遭受到海底滑坡的冲击作用后,其动态响应预测及安全性评估尤为重要。本文建立了海底滑坡-管道相互作用的有限元模型,将油气管道分为悬跨段和埋地段,考虑了悬跨长度和高度变化条件下,油气管道遭受海底滑坡冲击作用时的动态响应。数值计算结果表明,管道悬跨长度和高度对其塑性变形影响显著,海底滑坡引起的管道应变会随着悬跨长度和高度的增加而增大。最后,提出了综合考虑悬跨长度和高度影响下海底管道安全性评估方法,该成果可直接用于海底滑坡作用下油气管道安全性的动态评估。
