Time representation of mitochondrial morphology and function after acute spinal cord injury

Changes in mitochondrial morphology and function play an important role in secondary damage after acute spinal cord injury. We recorded the time representation of mitochondrial morphology and function in rats with acute spinal cord injury. Results showed that mitochondria had an irregular shape, and increased in size. Mitochondrial cristae were disordered and mitochondrial membrane rupture was visible at 2–24 hours after injury. Fusion protein mitofusin 1 expression gradually increased, peaked at 8 hours after injury, and then decreased to its lowest level at 24 hours. Expression of dynamin-related protein 1, amitochondrial fission protein, showed the opposite kinetics. At 2–24 hours after acute spinal cord injury, malondialdehyde content, cytochrome c levels and caspase-3 expression were increased, but glutathione content, adenosine triphosphate content, Na＋-K＋-ATPase activity and mitochondrial membrane potential were gradually reduced. Furthermore, mitochondrial morphology altered during the acute stage of spinal cord injury. Fusion was important within the first 8 hours, but fission played a key role at 24 hours. Oxidative stress was inhibited, biological productivity was diminished, and mitochondrial membrane potential and permeability were reduced in the acute stage of injury. In summary, mitochondrial apoptosis is activated when the time of spinal cord injury is prolonged.

Epidural spinal cord stimulation (ESCS) markedly improves motor and sensory function after spinal cord injury (SCI), but the underlying mechanisms are ***, we investigated whether ESCS affects oligodendrocyte differentiation and its cellular and molecular mechanisms in rats with SCI. ESCS improved hindlimb motor function at 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, and 28 days after *** also significantly increased the myelinated area at 28days, and reduced the number of apoptotic cells in the spinal white matter at 7 days. SCI decreased the expression of 20,30-cyclic-nucleotide 30-phosphodiesterase (CNPase,an oligodendrocyte marker) at 7 days and that of myelin basic protein at 28 days. ESCS significantly upregulated these markers and increased the percentage of Sox2/CNPase/DAPI-positive cells (newly differentiated oligodendrocytes) at 7 days. Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 4 (rh BMP4) markedly downregulated these factors after ESCS. Furthermore, ESCS significantly decreased BMP4 and p-Smad1/5/9 expression after SCI,and rh BMP4 reduced this effect of ESCS. These findings indicate that ESCS enhances the survival and differentiation of oligodendrocytes, protects myelin, and promotes motor functional recovery by inhibiting the BMP4-Smad1/5/9 signaling pathway after SCI.

Although solar steam generation strategy is efficient in desalinating seawater,it is still challenging to achieve continuous solar-thermal desalination of seawater and catalytic degradation of organic ***,dynamic regulations of hydrogen bonding networks and solvation structures are realized by designing an asymmetric bilayer membrane consisting of a bacterial cellulose/carbon nanotube/Co_(2)(OH)_(2)CO_(3)nanorod top layer and a bacterial cellulose/Co_(2)(OH)_(2)CO_(3)nanorod(BCH)bottom ***,the hydrogen bonding networks inside the membrane can be tuned by the rich surface–OH groups of the bacterial cellulose and Co_(2)(OH)_(2)CO_(3)as well as the ions and radicals in situ generated during the catalysis ***,both SO_(4)^(2−)and HSO_(5)−can regulate the solvation structure of Na^(+)and be adsorbed more preferentially on the evaporation surface than Cl^(−),thus hindering the de-solvation of the solvated Na^(+)and subsequent nucleation/growth of ***,the heat generated by the solar-thermal energy conversion can accelerate the reaction kinetics and enhance the catalytic degradation *** work provides a flow-bed water purification system with an asymmetric solar-thermal and catalytic membrane for synergistic solar thermal desalination of seawater/brine and catalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

The rapid development of gravitational wave（GW） observations since their first detection in 2015 [1] has opened a completely new window for exploring the Universe. Consequently, astronomical research has entered the multimessenger era, allowing us to use different tracers to view the cosmos from various perspectives. Among others, the appealing application of gravitational wave events from compact binary mergers is that they can act as standard sirens to determine absolute cosmic distances entirely independent of standard candles. This approach is one of the most promising means to solve the current H0tension problem.

The development of efficient processes allowing rapid access to complex chiral molecules from easily available alkenes is a long-term pursuit in the synthetic chemistry community. Transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric functionalization of allylic C–H bond represents a unique alternative toward this goal. However, enantioselective dehydrogenative transformation of olefins to value-added optically enriched molecules remains yet to be discovered. Here, we report a highly enantioselective dehydrogenative dienylation of imines with unactivated α-alkenes driven by the synergistic action of palladium complex and carboxylic acid. Chiral phosphoramidite ligands turned out to be superior in modulating the performance of palladium autotandem catalysis and allowed a broad range of α-alkenes and imines to be transformed into chiral dienylamines. Mechanistic studies suggest that the dienes could be in situ generated from α-alkenes through a palladium(0)-mediated dehydrogenative process in the presence of excess benzoquinone oxidants, and then participated in the Pd-chiral phosphoramidite-catalyzed intermolecular vinylogous-type addition to the imines activated by the carboxylic acid co-catalyst. Notably, the second β-H elimination occurring in the dienylation event might be the turnover-limiting step.

Historical forest and grassland cover changes not only are critical indicators for quantifying ecological and environmental change processes but also serve as fundamental data for long-term climate change simulations and terrestrial ecosystem carbon emission assessments. However, because of limitations in historical data, quantitative estimations and spatially gridded reconstructions of these changes remain challenging, necessitating further methodological exploration. This study focused on China's present-day land area over the past millennium, objectively capturing the characteristics and drivers of forest and grassland cover changes. On this basis, using the forest transition theory and the space-for-time substitution method, we depicted the historical deforestation process as an inverted “S” curve and developed a model to reconstruct historical forest area changes based on the functional relationship between the forest area and population size dynamics. Subsequently, a gridded forest allocation model was established on the basis of deforestation tendencies. For the grassland cover, we implemented regionspecific methods, such as the cropland area deduction method and the habitat constraint method, to quantitatively reconstruct historical changes. Consequently, we obtained provincial forest and grassland area changes over the past millennium and mapped 10-km-resolution gridded data of forest and grassland cover. The results indicated the following.(1) The methods developed using population data as a proxy objectively reproduced the spatiotemporal evolution of forest and grassland cover in China over the past millennium. These feasible methods offer a novel pathway for the quantitative reconstruction of historical forest and grassland cover changes.(2) The data indicated that China's forest area generally decreased over the past millennium, characterized by a “decrease-then-increase” pattern. Immobilizing highly dispersed Au nanoparticles onto titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) by a simple impregnation method under light is still a challenging *** this work,a high photostable Au precursor protected by thiol ligands was firstly synthesized,and the as-prepared Au precursor displayed excellent stability under light for over 30 days,while the Au precursor without thiol ligands formed precipitates after just 2 h under ***,the Au precursor protected by thiol ligands was immobilized on the external surface of uncalcined TS-1 (i.e.,TS-1-B) by the incipient wetness impregnation method (IWI method) to prepare Au/TS-1-B *** activity of as-prepared Au/TS-1-B catalyst in the hydro-oxidation of propane to acetone was 1.4 times higher than that of the catalyst prepared by the deposition-precipitation urea method (DPU method).The structures of the Au/TS-1-B catalysts prepared by different methods were analyzed by multiple *** to the Au/TS-1-B catalyst prepared by the DPU method,the Au/TS-1-B catalyst synthesized by the IWI method exhibited a narrower size distribution of Au nanoparticles and had more small Au particles (<2 nm),which is the main reason for its superior ***,the effects of gold loadings,reaction temperature and Si/Ti molar ratio on the catalytic performance of the Au/TS-1-B catalyst prepared by the IWI method were also *** addition,the Au/TS-1-B catalyst prepared by the IWI method also exhibited excellent stability for over 140 h.
