Enrichment of Mississippi Valley-type(MVT) deposits in the Tethyan domain linked to organic matter-rich sediments

The Tethyan domain hosts the world's most abundant hydrocarbon and Mississippi Valley-type(MVT) Pb-Zn resources. The relations among organic matter-rich sediments, MVT Pb-Zn mineralization, and the Tethyan tectonic evolution history are an important scientific issue. The data of paleogeographic reconstruction indicate that the Proto-, Paleo-, and NeoTethys oceans mainly lay in low latitude areas between 30°N and 45°S. The high temperature and precipitation and the lack of sea water overturning in stagnant basins resulted in high marine biological productivity and good preservation conditions for organic matter-rich sediments. Consequently, abundant organic matter-rich sediments were developed and preserved in the Tethyan domain and thus created abundant hydrocarbon resources. Mineralization age data demonstrate that MVT deposits mainly formed during the continent-continent convergence in the late stage of the Tethyan tectonic evolution. Deposits are located in the fold-and-thrust belts and forelands of the continent-continent convergence orogen, and spatially associated with hydrocarbon basins. Organic matter-rich sediments are well developed in MVT ore districts, where hydrocarbon activity appeared earlier than or nearly simultaneous with the Pb-Zn mineralization event. Hydrocarbon activity generally began earlier than the Pb-Zn mineralization in individual deposits. Organic matter-rich sediments and hydrocarbons mainly play the role of reducing agents in the MVT Pb-Zn mineralization process. Through bacterial or thermal reduction, dissolved sulfates from sedimentary strata were reduced to generate reduced sulfur for Pb-Zn sulfide mineralization. In summary, the Tethyan oceans have long been in low latitude areas near the equator, making the Tethyan domain develop abundant organic matterrich sediments and associated hydrocarbon resources which reduce sulfates to provide sufficient reduced sulfur for MVT PbZn mineralization in the region.

Prolonged Mantle Modification beneath the North China Craton:Evidence from Contrasting Mafic Dykes in Jiaodong Peninsula

The nature of lithosphere mantle beneath North China Craton(NCC) has been changed during the Mesozoic.We investigated the mafic dykes in Jiaodong to put constraint on the origin of them and reveal the mantle evolution of the NCC.Zircons from Kunyushan and Nansu mafic dykes give concordia U-Pb ages of 114.9 and 52.8 Ma,respectively.The Kunyushan mafic dyke has high MgO(~8.0 wt.%) and Cr(>380 ppm) but lower FeO(11 wt.%) contents.The LILE and light rare earth elements(LREE) are not so strongly enriched relative to the mafic dyke from Kunyushan but display slight enrichment compared to the primitive mantle.Positive zircon εHf(t) values are obtained(from +11.7 to +19.5,with one outlier of +3.4).It is suggested that the Nansu dyke sourced from an enriched MORB mantle and was generated by fluid flux melting.

Low-temperature NH_(3) abatement via selective oxidation over a supported copper catalyst with high Cu^(+) abundance

Selective catalytic NH_(3)-to-N_(2) oxidation(NH_(3)-SCO)is highly promising for abating NH_(3) emissions slipped from stationary flue gas after-treatment devices.Its practical application,however,is limited by the non-availability of low-cost catalysts with high activity and N_(2) selectivity.Here,using defect-rich nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes(NCNT-AW)as the support,we developed a highly active and durable copper-based NH_(3)-SCO catalyst with a high abundance of cuprous(Cu^(+))sites.The obtained Cu/NCNT-AW catalyst demonstrated outstanding activity with a T_(50)(i.***.the temperature to reach 50% NH_(3) conversion)of 174℃ in the NH_(3)-SCO reaction,which outperformed not only the Cu catalyst supported on N-free O-functionalized CNTs(OCNTs)or NCNT with less surface defects,but also those most active Cu catalysts in open literature.Reaction kinetics measurements and temperature-programmed surface reactions using NH_(3)as a probe molecule revealed that the NH_(3)-SCO reaction on Cu/NCNT-AW follows an internal selective catalytic reaction(i-SCR)route involving nitric oxide(NO)as a key intermediate.According to mechanistic investigations by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,Raman spectroscopy,and X-ray absorption spectroscopy,the superior NH_(3)-SCO performance of Cu/NCNT-AW originated from a synergy of surface defects and N-dopants.Specifically,surface defects promoted the anchoring of Cu O nanoparticles on N-containing sites and,thereby,enabled efficient electron transfer from N to Cu O,increasing significantly the fraction of SCR-active Cu^(+)sites in the catalyst.This study puts forward a new idea for manipulating and utilizing the interplay of defects and N-dopants on carbon surfaces to fabricate Cu^(+)-rich Cu catalysts for efficient abatement of slip NH_(3)emissions via selective oxidation.

Highly sensitive electrochemical determination of rutin based on the synergistic effect of 3D porous carbon and cobalt tungstate nanosheets

Rutin,a flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables,is a potential anticancer compound with strong anticancer activity.Therefore,electrochemical sensor was developed for the detection of rutin.In this study,CoWO_(4) nanosheets were synthesized via a hydrothermal method,and porous carbon(PC)was prepared via high-temperature pyrolysis.Successful preparation of the materials was confirmed,and characterization was performed by transmission electron microscopy,scanning electron microscopy,and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.A mixture of PC and CoWO_(4) nanosheets was used as an electrode modifier to fabricate the electrochemical sensor for the electrochemical determination of rutin.The 3D CoWO_(4) nanosheets exhibited high electrocatalytic activity and good stability.PC has a high surface-to-volume ratio and superior conductivity.Moreover,the hydrophobicity of PC allows large amounts of rutin to be adsorbed,thereby increasing the concentration of rutin at the electrode surface.Owing to the synergistic effect of the 3D CoWO_(4) nanosheets and PC,the developed electrochemical sensor was employed to quantitively determine rutin with high stability and sensitivity.The sensor showed a good linear range(5-5000 ng/mL)with a detection limit of 0.45 ng/mL.The developed sensor was successfully applied to the determination of rutin in crushed tablets and human serum samples.

Visible Light Communication for Vehicular Applications: A Novel Architecture with Proof-of-Concept Prototype

When there is an increasing interest in visible light communication(VLC), outdoor vehicle VLC has emerged as a promising candidate technology for future intelligent transportation systems. However, in VLC based vehicular applications, several challenges impede successful commercial application of VLC based products. This article first provides a thorough overview of the existing challenges. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel architecture with tracking and environment sensing ability for practical vehicular applications. Moreover, a proof-ofconcept prototype is implemented to validate the feasibility of the proposed system. Experimental and simulation results show that the proposed VLC system can provide reliable communications with a bit-error rate less than 10-4for vehicles under strong interference lights. Finally, based on the evaluations, we propose some key design issues for future studies in this research area.

A Chaotic Local Search-Based Particle Swarm Optimizer for Large-Scale Complex Wind Farm Layout Optimization

Wind energy has been widely applied in power generation to alleviate climate problems.The wind turbine layout of a wind farm is a primary factor of impacting power conversion efficiency due to the wake effect that reduces the power outputs of wind turbines located in downstream.Wind farm layout optimization(WFLO)aims to reduce the wake effect for maximizing the power outputs of the wind farm.Nevertheless,the wake effect among wind turbines increases significantly as the number of wind turbines increases in the wind farm,which severely affect power conversion efficiency.Conventional heuristic algorithms suffer from issues of low solution quality and local optimum for large-scale WFLO under complex wind scenarios.Thus,a chaotic local search-based genetic learning particle swarm optimizer(CGPSO)is proposed to optimize large-scale WFLO problems.CGPSO is tested on four larger-scale wind farms under four complex wind scenarios and compares with eight state-of-the-art algorithms.The experiment results indicate that CGPSO significantly outperforms its competitors in terms of performance,stability,and robustness.To be specific,a success and failure memories-based selection is proposed to choose a chaotic map for chaotic search local.It improves the solution quality.The parameter and search pattern of chaotic local search are also analyzed for WFLO problems.

Cuticular compounds inhibit cannibalism of early-instar spiderlings by pulli-carrying Pardosa pseudoannulata females

Cannibalism is common in spiders.Wolf spider(Lycosidae)females,which exhibit extensive maternal care,have been reported to cannibalize less when they are carrying egg sacs and juveniles.In a laboratory experiment,we demonstrated that cannibalism of early-instar spiderlings(EIS)by a wolf spider(Pardosa pseudoannulata)mother was almost completely inhibited when she was carrying spiderlings.Compared with virgin and mated-females,mother spiders tolerated more and predated fewer spiderlings,including gregarious pulli and newly dispersed spiderlings(NDS).Cannibalism of EIS by females during their reproductive period exhibited a V-shaped pattern,with a gradual decrease from the egg sac-carrying to pulli-carrying(PC)stage,and a recovery from the PC stage to post-reproductive(PR)stage.Notably,there was 0 cannibalism at the PC stage.PC females exhibited no interest in pulli,while PR females were attracted to and predated pulli and NDS as they did their natural prey,Nilaparvata lugens.Interestingly,PC females captured and released NDS in a foraging assay,although attraction was observed from olfactometer measurements.PC mothers possessed a cuticular volatile profile that was closer to that of pulli and NDS than to that of PR females.Moreover,NDS cuticular extract provoked an electrophysiological response in legs of PC females.Therefore,cuticular compound-mediated chemical communication may be involved in inhibiting cannibalism of EIS by spider mothers,and especially in eliminating cannibalism by PC mothers.Future studies will aim to characterize the specific cuticular compounds and chemoreception mechanism in females,which will facilitate our understanding of intraspecific recognition and cannibalism in spiders.

Guided Wave Propagation in Multilayered Two-dimensional Quasicrystal Plates with Imperfect Interfaces

An analytical solution of the guided wave propagation in a multilayered twodimensional decagonal quasicrystal plate with imperfect interfaces is derived.According to the elastodynamic equations of quasicrystals(QCs),the wave propagating problem in the plate is converted into a linear control system by employing the state-vector approach,from which the general solutions of the extended displacements and stresses can be obtained,These solutions along the thickness direction are utilized to derive the propagator matrix which connects the physical variables on the lower and upper interfaces of each layer.The special spring model,which describes the discontinuity of the physical quantities across the interface,is introduced into the propagator relationship of the multilayered structure.The total propagator matrix can be used to propagate the solutions in each interface and each layer about the multilayered plate.In addition,the traction-free boundary condition on the top and bottom surfaces of the laminate is considered to obtain the dispersion equation of wave propagation,Finally,typical numerical examples are presented to illustrate the marked influences of stacking sequence and interface coeficients on the dispersion curves and displacement mode shapes of the QC laminates.

Anodic hydrogen evolution on Mg

We measured the anodic hydrogen evolution rates for various applied anodic current densities and estimated the corresponding cathodic hydrogen evolution rates.The estimated cathodic hydrogen evolution rates were less than the measured anodic hydrogen evolution rates,contradicting the enhanced catalytic activity mechanism of Mg corrosion.In addition,this model was contradicted by the measured apparent Mg valence of 1.2±0.1.In contrast,the uni-positive Mg^(+)mechanism of Mg corrosion was supported by(i)the apparent Mg valence of 1.2±0.1,and(ii)the fact that the measured anodic hydrogen evolution rate increased with increasing weight loss rate.

Short-term effects of fine particulate matter constituents on myocardial infarction death

Existing evidence suggested that short-term exposure to fine particulate matter(PM_(2.5))may increase the risk of death from myocardial infarction(MI),while PM_(2.5) constituents responsible for this association has not been determined.We collected 12,927 MI deaths from 32 counties in southern China during 2011–2013.County-level exposures of ambient PM_(2.5) and its 5 constituents(i.e.,elemental carbon(EC),organic carbon(OC),sulfate(SO_(4)^(2-)),ammonium(NH_(4)^(+)),and nitrate(NO_(3)^(-)))were aggregated from gridded datasets predicted by Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System.We employed a space-time-stratified casecrossover design and conditional logistic regression models to quantify the association of MI mortality with short-term exposure to PM_(2.5) and its constituents across various lag days.Over the study period,the daily mean PM_(2.5) mass concentration was 77.8(standard deviation(SD)=72.7)μg/m^(3).We estimated an odds ratio of 1.038(95%confidence interval(CI):1.003-1.074),1.038(1.013-1.063)and 1.057(1.023-1.097)for MI mortality associated with per interquartile range(IQR)increase in the 3-day moving-average exposure to PM_(2.5)(IQR=76.3μg/m 3),EC(4.1μg/m^(3))and OC(9.1μg/m^(3)),respectively.We did not identify significant association between MI death and exposure to water-soluble ions(SO_(4)^(2-),NH_(4)^(+)and NO_(3)^(-)).Likelihood ratio tests supported no evident violations of linear assumptions for constituents-MI associations.Subgroup analyses showed stronger associations between MI death and EC/OC exposure in the elderly,males and cold months.Short-term exposure to PM_(2.5) constituents,particularly those carbonaceous aerosols,was associated with increased risks of MI mortality.
