Alkaline leaching mechanism of MSWI bottom ash: the pivotal role of Si(Al) chemical bonding environments

Municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash(MSWIBA) is a complex assemblage of aluminosilicate materials encompassing diverse solid wastes. Thus, its complexity poses great challenges to their resource utilization. For the sake of the alkali activation use of MSWIBA, this work focused on the characterizations and alkaline leaching experiments of various classified MSWIBA after sorting. Among the different categories of MSWIBA, waste glass(BA-G) and other unidentified slags(BA-O) were identified as potential precursors for alkali activation use. The alkaline leaching experiments proved that alkaline concentration, reaction temperature, reaction time, and raw material classification influenced the leaching process and results. Among these, the Si/Al chemical bonding environments from the material type played a pivotal role. When the materials had Qn(n>2) as the primary bonding structure, steric hindrance by the chain frameworks affected the alkali dissolution process, resulting in gradual disintegration from the outer layers inward. For the materials dominated by Q1frameworks, OH-could penetrate the frameworks, leading to their rapid depolymerization and outward dissolution. Overall, the Si/Al bonding environment played a crucial role in alkaline dissolution, providing theoretical guidance for classifying the alkali-activation utilization of MSWIBA and other aluminosilicate solid wastes.

Occurrence and Identification of the Hydromedusae Sarsia tubulosa(Hydrozoa, Corynidae) in Chinese Coastal Waters

Sarsia tubulosa(M. Sars, 1835) belongs to the family Corynidae, and is mainly distributed in coastal boreal and arctic waters. During regular zooplankton sampling in a coastal artificial lake(Lake Fenghuang) near the northern Yellow Sea(36?55?N, 122?24?E) in May 2015, we found high densities of Sarsia sp. in the zooplankton samples. The mean density of the medusae was 50± 40 individuals m^(-3)(mean ± SD). These specimens were characterized by a long tube-like manubrium and were consistent with previous descriptions of S. tubulosa. Furthermore, a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I subunit gene fragments revealed that these individuals clustered with S. tubulosa. Therefore, based on both morphological and molecular data, these specimens were identified as S. tubulosa. This report represents the first formal record of S. tubulosa in Chinese coastal waters, which extended its known geographical distribution.

Versuriga anadyomene, a newly recorded scyphozoan jellyfi sh(Scyphozoa: Rhizostomae) in Chinese waters

Scyphozoans are currently causing great concern worldwide due to the ef fects of their blooms on the marine environment. During a ?eld survey in Beibu Gulf, South China Sea, on 27 May 2015, we found specimens of a rhizostome jelly?sh that had not previously been recorded in Chinese seas. The morphological characters and DNA sequences of several specimens were examined in the laboratory. These specimens had the following morphological characters: hemispherical umbrella with reticular grooves; eight large semicircular velar lappets alternating with narrow lappets in each of the 8 octants; laterally ?attened mouth-arms with numerous ?at, membranous branches bearing many clubs and intermediate ?laments;non-anastomosed broad perradial canals and anastomosed narrow interradial canals. The morphological characters of these rhizostome jelly?sh were consistent with descriptions of Versuriga ***, phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial 16 S rDNA and nuclear 18 S rDNA gene fragments con?rmed that these specimens were in the same cluster as V. anadyomene collected in Palau. Therefore,this rhizostome jelly?sh was identi?ed as V. anadyomene. This is the ?rst record of the genus Versuriga and the species V. anadyomene in Chinese seas. The arrival of this species may be attributed to physical transport from the coastal waters of South East Asia.

Dietary studies of polyps and ephyrae are important to understand the formation and magnitude of jellyfish blooms and provide important insights into the marine food ***,the diet of polyps and ephyrae in situ is largely ***,prey species of the polyps and ephyrae of the moon jellyfish Aurelia coerulea in situ were identified using high-throughput DNA sequencing *** results show that *** polyps and ephyrae consume a variety of prey *** polyps consume both planktonic and benthic prey,including hydromedusae,copepods,ciliates,polychaetes,stauromedusae,and *** ephyrae mainly feed on copepods and *** zooplankton,including Rathkea octopunctata and Sarsia tubulosa,were frequently found as part of the diet of *** polyps and *** utilization of highthroughput sequencing technique is a useful tool for studying the diet of polyps and ephyrae in the field,complementing the traditional techniques towards a better understanding of the complex role of gelatinous animals in marine ecosystems.

Arctic sea ice distribution in summer based on aerial photos

On the basis of aerial photos of sea ice in the Second Chinese NationalArctic Research Expdition during July and September 2003 in the area of 74.11°～79.56°N and144.17°～169.95°W, image processing techniques are used to acquire some geometric parameters offloes, such as fractal dimension, roundness and mean caliper diameter. Latitudinal variation ofmorphology of arctic ice floes is then obtained, after comparing fractal dimension and roundnesswhich represent geometry of floe edge, the latter is found to show a more obvious tendency withlatitude but still not enough to describe floe abrasion. Then mean caliper diameter of ice floe isused as characteristic size to analyze floe size distribution, the result reveals that cumulativeprobabilities of floe sizes agree well with a power-law function, and distribution dimension isgenerally in the range of 1.05～1.25 and slightly increases as the latitude increases. Howeverslight curvatures are still observed in the plots of cumulative probabilities as in formerresearches, which can be attributed to both the limitation of sampling area and effect ofthermodynamic process.

Aurelia *** have been reported to form blooms in sea cucumber aquaculture ponds in the Bohai and Yellow *** identify the species,we carried out a genetic analysis of Aurelia *** and medusae based on mitochondrial 16 S rRNA *** offour Aurelia *** populations were collected in sea cucumber aquaculture ponds and samples offour Aurelia *** populations were collected in coastal *** a BLASTn search,we found that both the ephyrae collected in the aquaculture ponds and medusae collected in coastal waters belong to Aurelia *** haplotypes were recovered from the 16 S rRNA *** overall haplotype diversity and nucleotide diversity of the 166 *** individuals were 0.686%and 0.329%,respectively,indicating high haplotype diversity and low nucleotide ***,the haplotype diversity of ephyrae populations were generally lower than that of medusae populations with close sampling *** genetic differentiation between ephyrae populations collected in the sea cucumber aquaculture ponds and *** medusae collected in coastal waters was not significant,suggesting the ephyrae populations in the sea cucumber culture ponds were part of the same genetic group as the medusae populations in the coastal *** analysis of the 16 S rRNA region revealed that there was no significant correlation between the haplotypes and the geographic distribution of *** fixation index values showed significant genetic differentiation and limited gene flow between *** population of Weifang and other locations.

Bacteria communities in cnidarian jellyfi sh can be harmful to many important aquaculture species,as they can be key vectors of bacterial ***,our knowledge of bacterial communities associated with jellyfi sh in culture ponds and their potential roles in the regulation of aquaculture species remains *** this study,sequencing based on the bacterial 16S rRNA gene was used to investigate the composition and variation of the bacterial communities associated with hydromedusa Gonionemus vertens in sea cucumber culture ponds and natural marine *** associated bacterial communities of *** from the culture ponds in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea had signifi cantly diff erent compositions,when compared with those from ambient seawater ***,bacterial communities associated with *** had similar diversity and composition in culture ponds and natural marine environment in the Yellow *** were 31 unique bacterial biomarkers identifi ed in three *** major communities were highly abundant in Kiloniellales,Octadecabacter,Polynucleobacter,and Polaribacter,and are related to the environmental information *** candidates such as Vibrionales and Chlamydiales had notably low relative abundances(<1%).The venom of the jellyfi sh was considered responsible for damage to the *** study provides important data to help assess the impact of cnidarians-associated bacterial communities on pond aquaculture and the infl uences on material cycling and energy fl ow in marine ecosystems.

Abundance,Diversity and Functional Potentials of Planktonic Bacteria and Microeukaryotes in the Coral-Reef System of Xisha Islands,China

Corals influence microorganisms within the surrounding seawater,yet the diversities and functions of seawater bacteria and microeukaryotes in coral-reef systems have not been well *** collected 40 seawater samples in outer coral reef flats and semi-closed inner lagoons from the surface,middle and bottom layers in the pristine coral-reef system of Xisha Islands,South China *** detected the abundance,composition and distribution of bacteria and microeukaryotes using flow cytometry,qPCR and high throughput sequencing techniques,and profiled the potential ecological roles based on the information of 16S and 18S rDNA *** terms of flow cytometry,Prochlorococcus dominated the autotrophs with cell abundance ranging from 5.8×10^(2)to 5.44×10^(3)cells mL−1 *** on qPCR,the 16S rDNA copies were much higher in coral reef flats than in lagoons(P=0.003).The bacterial communities held significantly lower diversity in bottom waters compared with surface and middle waters(P<0.05),which were dominated by SAR11,Flavobacteriales,and *** represented most of the microeukaryotic communities with Dinophyceae and Syndiniales well represented in all *** bacterial nor microeukaryotic community exhibited distinct layer or niche pattern,however,Haptophyta and Picozoa decreased with depth and SAR 86,MAST-3 and Picozoa were enriched in lagoons(P<0.05).To adapt the nutrient-poor and organic matter-rich environment,bacterial nitrogen fixation and assimilatory/dissimilatory nitrate reduction were active in the system,and mixotrophy was the most important trophic strategy among *** study highlighted the ecological adaptability of seawater microbes to the unique coral-reef environments.

Induced neural stem cells regulate microglial activation through Akt-mediated upregulation of CXCR4 and Crry in a mouse model of closed head injury

Microglial activation that occurs rapidly after closed head injury may play important and complex roles in neuroinflammation-associated neuronal damage and *** previously reported that induced neural stem cells can modulate the behavior of activated microglia via CXCL12/CXCR4 signaling,influencing their activation such that they can promote neurological ***,the mechanism of CXCR4 upregulation in induced neural stem cells remains *** this study,we found that nuclear factor-κB activation induced by closed head injury mouse serum in microglia promoted CXCL12 and tumor necrosis factor-αexpression but suppressed insulin-like growth factor-1 ***,recombinant complement receptor 2-conjugated Crry(CR2-Crry)reduced the effects of closed head injury mouse serum-induced nuclear factor-κB activation in microglia and the levels of activated microglia,CXCL12,and tumor necrosis factor-α.Additionally,we observed that,in response to stimulation(including stimulation by CXCL12 secreted by activated microglia),CXCR4 and Crry levels can be upregulated in induced neural stem cells via the interplay among CXCL12/CXCR4,Crry,and Akt signaling to modulate microglial *** agreement with these in vitro experimental results,we found that Akt activation enhanced the immunoregulatory effects of induced neural stem cell grafts on microglial activation,leading to the promotion of neurological recovery via insulin-like growth factor-1 secretion and the neuroprotective effects of induced neural stem cell grafts through CXCR4 and Crry upregulation in the injured cortices of closed head injury ***,these beneficial effects of Akt activation in induced neural stem cells were positively correlated with the therapeutic effects of induced neural stem cells on neuronal injury,cerebral edema,and neurological disorders post–closed head *** conclusion,our findings reveal that Akt activation may enhance the immunoregulatory effects of induced neura
