The Proterozoic Wenquan granite occurs at the northern margin of the North china *** U-Pb zircon ages reveal that the Wenquan granite was emplaced at 1697±7 Ma,and is thus approximately coeval with the 1753±23 Ma Changsaoying granite and the 1683±4 Ma Shachang granite found in the *** ubiquitous occurrence of titanite and magnetite demonstrates that the granites are oxidized. Geochemically,they show most of the characteristics of typical A-type granites,such as high contents of alkalis(i.e.,high KO + NaO,with KO/NaO > 1),Rb,Y,Nb and rare earth elements(REE,except for Eu),high FeO/MgO and Ga/Al ratios and low contents of CaO,A1O,and *** negative bulk rock initial Nd and zircon initial Hf isotopic ratios suggest that they were most likely derived from the late Archean lower *** three Proterozoic A-type granites are believed to be genetically related to the breakup of the Columbia supercontinent.

The fluvio-lacustrine sequences in the Nihewan Basin,northern china provide important terrestrial archives of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment as well as an important source of Paleolithic settlements and therefore early human occupation in the eastern Old *** dating of the sequences has permitted the precise timing of the basin infilling and associated Paleolithic and mammalian fauna *** we report new magnetostratigraphic results that place stringent age controls on the Huojiadi Paleolithic site in this ***-oxidized magnetite and hematite were identified as the major carriers for the characteristic remanent *** results show that the Huojiadi sequence recorded the very late Matuyama reverse chron and the Jaramillo normal *** stone artifact layer resides in the Jaramillo normal subchron,yielding an estimated age of around 1.0 Ma for the Huojiadi Paleolithic ***,by combining our magnetostratigraphy and previously published magneto-chronology data,a magnetochronological sequence of the early Pleistocene Paleolithic sites in the Nihewan Basin has been *** chronological sequence implies that early humans may have persistently colonized the high-latitude temperate areas in the eastern Old World,such as the Nihewan Basin,during the Early Pleistocene.

Exhumation of deeply buried ultrahigh-pressure(UHP) terranes remains a puzzle in understanding lithospheric dynamic *** evidence that constrains the exhumation process of the Dabie UHP terrane includes the following.(1) Structural data record the architecture of the Dabie UHP *** slices are recognized—i.e.,from top to bottom,the Susong blueschist slice,the Huangzhen-Huangweihe(HH) HP slice,and the Jinheqiao-Shuanghe-Bixiling(JSB) UHP slice. These slices have been stacked and domed.(2) Geophysical data depict two offsets in the Moho. Offset-Ⅰseparates the Dabie UHP terrane from the North china craton,and has served as a subduction channel,as well as an exhumation ***-Ⅱ,separating the Dabie UHP terrane from the foreland belt,developed due to geodynamic regime reorganization.(3) Geochronological data reveal that the HP slice was exhumed earlier that the UHP slice.A northward-younging exhumation polarity is implied,with younger exhumation age closer to the exhumation channel. These pieces of evidence point to a multistage exhumation *** Yangtze craton collided with and subducted beneath the North china craton at the very beginning of Triassic *** 230 Ma,the Susong blueschist slice and the southern end of the HH HP slice had arrived at a middle-crustal level,while its northern part was still at mantle *** processes continued until the JSB UHP slice was exhumed to mid-crustal levels at 210 *** geodynamic regime reorganization during 210-180 Ma,continuing compression of the Yangtze craton and underthrusting along offset-Ⅱin the Moho caused the dome structure,and eventually brought the UHP rocks to the Earth’s surface.

The Taklimakan Desert is located in the foreland basin of the Tibetan ***, we report the results of stratigraphic investigations of a 1626-m-thick sequence with interbedded wind-blown silt from the southern marginal Taklimakan *** the studied section is located downwind of the desert,the eolian silt accumulation is closely linked to desert formation. Our new evidence indicates that shifting sand dunes prevailed in the Tarim Basin by at least 5.3 Ma ago,as they do *** attribute this event to late Cenozoic climatic deterioration,as well as to changes in atmospheric circulation induced by Tibetan Plateau uplift.

Recently,Abdulagatov and Azizov(2006) measured the densities of aqueous LiCl solutions from 0.129 to 15.498 mol kg,291.25 to 607.71 K,and 0.961 to 30.55 *** density data are accurate and valuable for geochemical ***,their model(Eqs. (5) and(6)) for calculating the volume(or density) of aqueous LiC1 solutions apparently bears some flaws and the accuracy they reported contradicts what we calculated.

The finite-difference(FD) method is a powerful tool in seismic wave field modelling for understanding seismic wave propagation in the Earth’s interior and interpreting the real seismic *** accuracy of FD modelling partly depends on the implementation of the free-surface (***-free) *** the past 40 years,at least six kinds of free-surface boundary condition approximate schemes(such as one-sided,centred finite-difference,composed,new composed,implicit and boundary-modified approximations) have been developed in FD second-order elastodynamic *** we simulate seismic wave fields in homogeneous and lateral heterogeneous models using tliese free-surface boundary condition approximate schemes and evaluate their stability and applicability by comparing with corresponding analytical solutions,and then quantitatively evaluate the accuracies of different approximate schemes from the misfit of the amplitude and phase between the numerical and analytical *** results confirm that the composed scheme becomes unstable for the V/V ratio less than 0.57, and suggest that(1) the one-sided scheme is only accurate to first order and therefore introduces serious errors for the shorter wavelengths,other schemes are all of second-order precision;(2) the new composed,implicit and boundary-modified schemes are stable even when the V/V ratio is less than 0.2;(3) the implicit and boundary-modified schemes are able to deal with laterally varying(heterogeneous) free surface;(4) in the corresponding stability range,the one-sided scheme shows remarkable errors in both phase and amplitude compared to analytical solution(which means larger errors in travel-time and reflection strength),the other five approximate schemes show better performance in travel-time(phase) than strength(amplitude).

This paper describes a combined method of simultaneously measuring U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes as well as trace elements in Phalaborwa baddeleyite and 91500,GJ-1,TEMORA-1 and SK10-2 zircons by means of Neptune MC-ICPMS and Agilent Q-ICPMS connected to a 193 nm excimer laser ablation system. Material ablated by laser was carried in different proportions into Q-ICPMS for U-Pb isotopic and trace elemental and MC-ICPMS for Lu-Hf isotopic *** indicate that different proportions of ablated material for the Q-ICPMS and MC-ICPMS(6:4,5:5 and 4:6 respectively) do not show any bias for the zircon/baddeleyite U-Pb age,Lu-Hf isotope and trace elemental compositions within analytical *** 40—60μm spot size,the obtained U-Pb ages of Phalaborwa baddeleyite,91500, GJ-1,TEMORA and SK10-2 zircons are 2065±15(2σ,n=20),1063±6(2a,n=19),613±6(2a,n=20),416±5 (2σ,n=20) and 32.6±0.5(2σ,n=20) Ma,*** Hf/Hf ratios are 0.281231±24(2SD,n=20), 0.282310±35(2SD,n=19),0.282028±34(2SD,n=20),0.282687±34(2SD,n=20) and 0.282752±53(2SD, n=20),*** obtained trace elemental compositions are identical to the reference values. Therefore,this kind of technique makes it possible to simultaneously obtain the U-Pb age,Lu-Hf isotopes and trace elemental compositions of zircon and baddeleyite,which could be an important tool in solving problems in earth sciences.

The Altaids is one of the largest accretionary collages in the world,and the tectonic styles of the accretionary processes have been interpreted in several ways,including as an amalgamation of multiple terranes,as a result of oroclinal bending of a long,single arc,or as a Caledonian continental *** on recent tectonostratigraphic analyses together with paleomagnetic data,the tectonic styles of the Neoproterozoic to Paleozoic accretionary processes of the Altaids are *** Western Altaids is the main focus of the study,which was mainly composed of several independent linear components such as arcs and microcontinents with Proterozoic basement and cover *** kinds of arcs existed in the Paleo-Asian Ocean,including a complicated type of arc(Alaskan-type),which is a combination of the Japan-and Mariana-type intra-oceanic arcs and the Cordillera-type continental *** linear components rotated and collided with each other with multiple subduction polarities,which could have been an important result of multiple linear element amalgamation,and which has contributed greatly to the architecture of the Eurasian continent. The basic tectonic styles of the Altaids can be summarized as arc-arc collision,oroclinal bending and large-scale rotation,and multiple subductions with a complicated archipelago *** basic features of accretionary orogens in general can be attributed to the amalgamation of complicated multiple linear *** Mesozoic to Cenozoic accretionary orogens in the world are also characterized by processes of multiple linear element *** attention should be paid to the multiple linear element amalgamation of ancient accretionary orogens,which will shed light on lateral and vertical continental growth.

Using newly determined Sm isotopic abundances for correcting the isobaric interference of Sm on Nd and the established mass bias relationship between Sm and Nd,a series of in situ Nd isotopic measurements were conducted for relatively high Nd concentrations of natural geological materials, including apatite,titanite,monazite and perovskite on a Neptune multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(MC-ICPMS),coupled to a 193 nm ArF excimer laser ablation *** results show that Ce has no significant influence on the precision and accuracy of Nd isotopic analyses for LREE-enriched geological minerals and that our approach is efficient in obtaining reliable Nd/Nd and Sm/Nd ratios for those materials with Sm/Nd<1(Sm/Nd<0.6).When combined with trace element and U-Pb isotope data,the in situ Nd isotopic data can provide important information on geological processes.
