Efficacy and safety of Tuomin zhiti decoction(脱敏止嚏汤) on patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis: A randomized， double-blind， placebo-controlled trial

Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Tuomin zhiti decoction (TZD) in the short-term treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR). Methods: This study is a randomized， double-blind placebo-controlled， and single-center clinical trial. In April 2021， during the spring pollen season in Beijing， 94 SAR patients aged 19-60 years were randomized (1:1 ratio) to receive two weeks of TZD or placebo. The primary outcome was the change of Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS) and Total Ocular Symptom Score (TOSS) from baseline to the end of treatment. Secondary outcomes were the changed score of the mini Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ)， Rescue Medication Score (RMS)， and Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC). All adverse events were recorded and evaluated by two senior physicians. Results: TZD significantly reduced both the total nasal symptom scores and total ocular symptom scores compared to scores at baseline， while the placebo group showed an increasing trajectory in both symptom scores. Compared to the placebo group， the TZD group also showed a greater improvement in the quality of life， scores of RMS， nasal and eye symptoms scores after TZD treatment (P < 0.001). Most notably， at the end of treatment， the proportion of remission measured by PGIC was significantly higher in the TZD group (82.97%) compared with the placebo group (47.72%， P < 0.001). Conclusion: This study suggested that two weeks of TZD is an effective and safe treatment for SAR patients and spring pollen allergy， TZD could significantly improve the nasal and eye symptoms and improve the quality of life of patients.

A new feasible method for yield gap analysis in regions dominanted by smallholder farmers, with a case study of Jiangsu Province, China

In the regions where crops were mostly produced by smallholder farmers, the analysis of yield gap is difficult due to diverse cultivars, crop managements and yield levels. In order to find an effective method that can reasonably verify the yield gap and the limiting cultivation factors in narrowing yield gaps in areas that are dominanted by smallholder farmers, we worked out a method consisting five progressive procedures as follows: questionnaire investigation of farmer cultivation regime, identification of yield levels and yield gaps, generalization of key cultivation measurements, reconstruction of representative maize populations, and process-based analysis of yield gap. A case study was carried out in Jiangsu Province, China, in which maize is mostly produced by smallholder farmers. A questionnaire investigation of 1 023 smallholder farmers was carried out firstly, then the frequency distribution of maize yield was simulated by an normal distribution function, and then the covering range and average value of the basic yield, farmer yield and high-yield farmer yield levels were calculated out from the equation. Hereby, the yield gaps 1, 2 and 3 were calculated along with the record highest yield from literature and experts, which were 2 564, 2 346 and 2 073 kg ha^(–1), respectively. Moreover, with the covering range of each yield level, the suveyed farmers belonging to each yield level were grouped together and then their major cultivation measures were traced and generalized. With the generalized cultivation measures, representative maize populations of the four yield levels were reconstructed, and thereby clarifing lots of characters of the populations or single plant of each population with processbased analysis of the reconstructed populations. In this case, the main factors causing the yield gap were plant density, fertilizer application rate, logging caused by hurricane, and damages caused by pests. Supercooling Suppression of Microencapsulated n-Alkanes by Introducing an Organic Gelator

Supercooling of the microencapsulated phase change materials（PCMs） during cooling usually happens. This phenomenon can interfere with heat transfer and is necessary to further overcome. In this study, mela- mine-formaldehyde microcapsules containing two n-alkane PCMs, namely, n-dodecane（Cl2） or n-tetradecane（C14） were prepared by in situ polymerization. A small amount of n-hexatriacontane（C36） was introduced as an organic ge- lator into the core of microcapsules to cope with the supercooling problem. Analyses demonstrate that supercooling of the microencapsulated C12 or C14 was significantly suppressed by adding 3%（mass fraction） C36, without changing the spherical morphology and dispersibility. It could be also found that the enthalpy of microencapsulated CI2 or C14 containing C36 was similar to that of microencapsulated n-alkanes without C36, whereas the difference between onsets of crystallization and melting（degree of supercooling） is similar to that of those of pure n-alkanes, suggesting the re- markable suppression ability of the organic gelator on supercooling.

How supermassive black holes(SMBHs) are spun-up is a key issue in modern astrophysics. As an extension to the study in Wang et al., here we address the issue by comparing the host galaxy properties of nearby(z 10^7.9 M⊙)have a preference for being spun-up in classical bulges, and low-mass SMBHs(i.e., MBH = 10^6-10^7 M⊙)in pseudo-bulges. This dichotomy suggests and confirms that high-mass and low-mass SMBHs are spun-up in different ways, i.e., a major "dry" merger and a secular evolution respectively.

Joint effects of heavy metal binary mixtures on seed germination,root and shoot growth,bacterial bioluminescence,and gene mutation

This investigation was to assess the joint effects of metal binary mixtures on seed germination,root and shoot growth,bacterial bioluminescence,and gene mutation based on the one toxic unit（1 TU）*** sensitivities and orders of toxicity of metal mixtures were observed among the *** general,mostly additive or antagonistic effects were observed,while almost no synergistic effects by the binary metal mixtures in all ***,the combined effects of heavy metals in the different bioassays were difficult to generalize since they were dependent on both chemical type and the organism used in each ***, these results indicate that a battery of bioassays with mixture chemicals as opposed to just a single assay with single metal is a better strategy for the bioassessment of environmental pollutants.

Effect of nutrient conditions on the toxicity of naphthalene to Chlorella pyrenoidosa

The toxicity of naphthalene to a freshwater microalga, Chlorella pyrenoidosa, and the subsequent recovery of algae from the damage were investigated under two nutrient conditions, either enriched with nitrogen （N） and phosphorus （P）, or starved of N and E Results showed that C. pyrenoidosa was more sensitive to naphthalene under N,P-enriched condition, and the inhibitory rate generally increased at first and then decreased gradually with the evaporation of naphthalene under both nutrient conditions. Enriched N, P reduced the inhibitory rate at initial naphthalene concentration of 5 and 10 mg/L, but enhanced it at 100 mg/L, at which more severe ultrastructure damages were found than those under N,P-starved condition. Observed damages included partly or totally disappearance of nucleolus, nuclear, and plasma membranes. According to the chlorophyll content and cell density measurements, C. pyrenoidosa could recover from naphthalene damage with initial concentrations ≤ 50 mg/L in 7 days under both nutrient conditions, while they could not recover if the initial concentration of naphthalene was at 100 mg/L. Under the N,P-starved condition, the inability of C. pyrenoidosa to recover from the naphthalene damage was consistent with the results of high inhibitory rate, low value of specific growth rate （SGR, 0.05 day-l）, and the severe destruction of cell structure. However, under the N,P-enriched conditions, the observed lower inhibitory rate, higher value of SGR （0.55 day^-1）, and the intact cell structure of most cells suggested that algae could potentially recover from the naphthalene damage.

A New Manganese(Ⅱ) Coordination Compound Constructed by 1,10-Phenanthroline Derivative and Chlorine Anions: Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Theoretical Calculation

The new manganese（Ⅱ） coordination compound, [Mn（Cl）2（L）2]（1, L = 11-fluorodipyrido[3,2-a:2?,3?-c]phenazine）, has been achieved under hydrothermal conditions. The structure of compound 1 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 crystallizes in monoclinic system, space group C2/c with a = 8.419（2）, b = 12.286（2）, c = 28.451（6） ?, β = 95.889（3）°, V =2927.5（10） ?3, Z = 4, C36 H16 MnF2 Cl2 N8, Mr = 724.41, Dc = 1.644 g/cm3, F（000） = 1460, μ（Mo Ka）= 0.691 mm-1, R = 0.0445 and wR = 0.0982. Adjacent compounds are stacked by one type of π-πinteraction among L ligands to generate a 1D supramolecular chain. Further, the 1D supramolecular chains are stacked by another type of π-π interaction among L ligands to give a 2D supramolecular layer. Moreover, the C-F···π interactions between the carbon atom of the L ligand and the pyrazine ring of the adjacent L ligand further stabilize the supramolecular layer of 1. In addition, natural bond orbital（NBO） analysis has been calculated by the B3LYP/LANL2DZ method, which shows obvious covalent interaction between the coordinated atoms and Mn（Ⅱ） ion.

Application of stimulating agents on the immobilized bioluminescence strain Pseudomonas putida mt-2 KG1206,preserved by deep-freezing,for the convenient biomonitoring

This study was conducted to develop methods for the application of an immobilized bioluminescence strain （KG1206）, preserved by deep-freezing （DF）, for the monitoring of contaminated environments. The immobilized cells, preserved by DF, required approximately 2 hr for reconstitution of their activity. A large reduction in bioluminescence was observed due to the DF process; 0.07-0.58 times that of the non deep-frozen （NDF） immobilized strain. The decreased bioluminescence activity induced by the DF process was enhanced by the stimulants, sodium lactate （SL） and KNO3. However, regardless of the inducer chemical tested, the immobilized strain modified with KNO3 consistently produced greater bioluminescence than that treated with SL, in the range of 3.0-10.7 （avg. 6.7± 3.69） and 1.2-4.2 （avg. 2.4 ± 1.47） times that of control, respectively. All KNO3 treatments of contaminated groundwater samples also resulted in an increase in bioluminescence activity, but the rate of stimulation varied for each sample. Also, no strong linear correlation was observed between the bioluminescence and the total concentration of an inducer, which may related to the complex characteristics of the environmental samples. Overall, the results demonstrated the ability of immobilized genetically engineered bacteria, preserved by DF, to measure a specific group of environmental contaminants using a stimulating agent （KNO3）, suggesting the potential for its preliminary application in a field-ready bioassay.

Determination of Crosslinking and Grafting in Polyurethane-acrylic Hybrid Material and Their Theoretical Calculations

A theoretical method to calculate the mode of polyurethane（PU） prepolymers grafted to polyacrylic（PAC） was presented. Using hydroxyethyl acrylate（HEA） as coupling agent, polyurethane-acrylics（PU-AC） hybrid latexes were prepared with varying HEA level and the reaction of HEA with PU prepolymers at different temperatures, and PU grafted to PAC was experimentally determined. The results show that PU grafted to PAC regularly increased, and the non-grafted and linear free PU regularly decreased with increase in HEA/NCO（isocyanate group）. The grafted PU on PAC was not proportional to HEA. More than half of linear PU prepolymers were grafted to PAC when HEA was at a low level with HEA/NCO at 0.33. While grafted PU increased to 84.80%（mass fraction）, when HEA/NCO increased to 1.0. The results were interpreted based on the theoretical calculation of PU grafted to PAC by the present method.
