Molecular Mobility in the Amorphous Phase Determines the Critical Strain of Fibrillation in the Tensile Stretching of Polyethylene

The microstructural development of bimodal high density polyethylene subjected to tensile deformation was investigated as a function of strain after annealing at different temperatures by means of a scanning synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering(SAXS)*** different deformation mechanisms were activated in sequence upon tensile deformation:intralamellar slipping of crystalline blocks dominates the deformation behavior at small deformations whereas a stress-induced crystalline block fragmentation and recrystallization process occurs at a critical strain yielding new crystallites with the molecular chains preferentially oriented along the drawing *** critical strain associated with the lamellar-to-fibrillar transition was found to be ca.0.9 in bimodal sample,which is significantly larger than that observed for unimodal high-density polyethylene(0.4).This observation is primarily due to the fact that the bimodal sample possesses a greater mobility of the amorphous phase and thereby a reduced modulus of the entangled amorphous *** conclusion of the mobility of the amorphous phase as a determining factor for the critical strain was further proven by the 1H-NMR T2 relaxation *** these findings contribute to our understanding of the excellent slow crack growth resistance of bimodal polyethylene for pipe application.

The reaction conditionsallow primary alcoholic TBS ethers to be desilylated chemoselectively in the presence of phenolicTBS ethers, secondary and tertiary alcolholic TBS ethers, and the extensively used TBDPS-,acetyl-, benzyloxycarbonyl-, p-toluenesulfonyl- and benzyl protective groups.

Role and mechanism of circ-PRKCI in hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND The circular RNA circ-PRKCI is an endogenous non-coding RNA that forms a covalently closed ring after reverse splicing, which plays a key role in the occurrence and development of multiple digestive system *** To investigate the role and mechanism of circ-PRKCI in the occurrence and development of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS This study used real-time polymerase chain reaction to detect the expression of circ-PRKCI in tumor tissues, tumor adjacent tissues, and blood in patients with HCC and other digestive system tumor cells. A series of functional tests were performed to explore whether circ-PRKCI affects the growth of HCC cells and what is its mechanism in HCC. Meanwhile, fluorescence in situ hybridization was used to detect the subcellular localization of circ-PRKCI. Survival analysis was performed to predict the correlation between circ-PRKCI and the prognosis of HCC. Chi-square test and t-test were performed for statistical *** The level of circ-PRKCI was significantly higher in HCC tissues than in tumor adjacent tissues, and in HCC cell lines than in cells lines of esophageal, liver,stomach, and colon cancers. A series of functional tests showed that circ-PRKCI substantially inhibited cell apoptosis and promoted cell invasion. It was foundthat circ-PRKCI can act as the sponge of miRNA-545 to reduce the expression of AKT3 protein. Moreover, the result of survival analysis showed that circ-PRKCI target gene E2 F7 can reduce liver cancer patients' survival rate. And clinical data suggested that the distribution of circ-PRKCI rose with the depth of invasion,lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, and TNM stage, indicating that circPRKCI may affect the survival and prognosis of patients with HCC by regulating E2 *** This study explores the role and mechanism of circ-PRKCI in HCC, which provides a new research direction and theoretical basis for the treatment of HCC.

Massive hemorrhagic ascites: A rare presentation of eosinophilic gastroenteritis

According to Klein's classification system, the symp-tomatology of eosinophilic gastroenteritis(EG), a rare disease, differs based on the affected tissue layer. Pati-ents with subserosal EG often have peritoneal effusion. Hemorrhagic ascites due to EG is extremely rare and has not been reported in the literature. Here, we report a 57-year-old woman with EG and massive hemorrhagic ascites. Laboratory investigations showed elevated per-ipheral eosinophils with significant eosinophilia(65.6%). Ultrasonography showed massive abdominal ascites. Ab-dominal paracentesis revealed hemorrhagic peritoneal fluid and microscopy showed predominant eosinophils. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed erosions, ex-udates, and mucosal rings in the duodenal mucosa; hist-ological examination indicated eosinophilic infiltration. EG presenting with hemorrhagic ascites was diagnosed by histologic examination of eosinophilic infiltration. She was empirically treated with ketotifen 1 mg bid po with rapid resolution of ascites and a remarkable decline in peripheral eosinophil counts. Clinicians should consider the different-ial diagnosis of unexplained hemorrhagic ascites.

Simultaneous determination of flavonoids and anthraquinones in chrysanthemum by capillary electrophoresis with amperometry detection

A high-performance capillary electrophoresis with amperometry detection method （CE-AD） has been developed for the analysis of flavonoids and anthraquinones （emodin, kaempferol, apigenin, luteolin and rhein） in chrysanthemum. Under optimum conditions, these five analytes were base-line separated within 17 min using a borate-phosphate running buffer （1.5 ×10^-2 mol/L borate-3× 10^-2 mol/L phosphate running buffer, pH 9.0） at a working potential of ＋0.90 V （vs. SCE） and a separation voltage of 19 kV. The linear relationship between concentration and current response was obtained with detection limits （S/N = 3） ranging from 1.0 × 10^-7 to 2.1 × 10^-7 g/mL for all analytes. This proposed method was successfully used in the analysis of four kinds of chrysanthemum with relatively simple extraction procedures, the assay results were satisfactory.

Long-term non-invasive positive pressure ventilation in severe stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease： a meta-analysis

Background The evidence for non-invasive positive pressure ventilation （NIPPV） used in patients with severe stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease （COPD） is insufficient. The aim of the meta-analysis was to assess the treatment effects of long-term NIPPV on gas change, lung function, health-related quality of life （HRQL）, survival and mortality in severe stable COPD patients. Methods Randomized controlled trials （RCTs） and crossover studies comparing the treatment effects of NIPPV with conventional therapy were identified from electronic databases and reference lists from January 1995 to August 2010. Two reviewers independently assessed study quality. Data were combined using Review Manager 5.0. Both pooled effects and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Results Five RCTs and one randomized crossover study with a total of 383 severe stable COPD patients were included NIPPV improved gas change significantly when using a higher inspiratory positive airway pressures. The weighted mean difference （WMD） for the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in artery （PaCO2） was -3.52 （-5.26, -1.77） mmHg and for the partial pressure of oxygen in artery （PaO2） 2.84 （0.23, 5.44） mmHg. There were significant improvements in dyspnea and sleep quality, but gained no benefits on lung function. The standardized mean difference （SMD） for the forced expiratory volume in 1 second （FEV1） was 0.00 （0.29, 0.29）. And the benefits for exercise tolerance, mood, survival and mortality remained unclear. Conclusions Patients with severe stable COPD can gain some substantial treatment benefits when using NIPPV, especially improvements in gas change, dyspnea and sleep quality. Studies of high methodological quality with large population, especially those based on a higher inspiratory positive airway pressures are required to provide more evidences.

Feedback processing in the primate brain and in AI systems

The primate brain and artificial intelligence(AI) can both be conceptualized as information processing systems, each with its own distinct biological and computational architectures. While there are parallels between them, their respective structural and functional connections show significant differences. In this paper, we examine the central role of feedback processing in both the primate brain and AI systems, which has been shown to be crucial in shaping neural processing. By reviewing the key features of feedback processes in the primate brain, which allows the brain to incorporate prior knowledge, contextual information, and taskdemands into early-stage processing, we highlight the divergence in goals and functions between biological and AI *** these differences is crucial for elucidating the cognitive capabilities of the primate brain and for addressing computational challenges in AI. In advocating “Cognition-Inspired-Computation”, we suggest that integrating insights from feedback processing in the primate brain into AI research will offer potentially significant improvements for the advancement of AI systems.

Efficacy of the fat-dissociation method for nodal harvesting in gastric cancer

BACKGROUND There is an increased need for accurate staging for gastric cancer ***, it is necessary to carefully examine all dissected lymph nodes for precise staging. Recently, the fat-dissociation method has been developed as a quick and accurate method for harvesting dissected lymph nodes of colorectal cancer *** To investigate the usefulness of the fat-dissociation method for harvesting dissected lymph nodes of gastric cancer *** Fifty-six resected specimens from gastric cancer patients who underwent standard curative gastrectomy and lymph node dissection at our hospital were used. Group 2 lymph nodes were separated from each specimen, and the remaining adipose tissue containing the group 1 lymph nodes was used. Some resected specimens were subjected to the fat-dissociation method. One vial of Imofully~? was dissolved in 50 m L of saline and injected into the tissue. The tissue was incubated for 1 h and the dissolved fat was removed. Subsequently, the nodes were identified, picked up with scissors, and mapped. The number of nodes in each lymphatic compartment and duration of lymph node harvest and mapping were *** The fat-dissociation method was used for 24 samples, while the conventional dissection method was used for 32 samples. The total number of harvested lymph nodes was 45.9 in the fat dissociation group and 44.3 in the control group, and there was no significant difference between the two groups. There were also no significant differences in the number of lymph nodes between the two groups based on a comparison of the lymphatic compartments. However, the total median duration of the fat-dissociation method was 38.2 min, reflecting a reduced duration of approximately 60 min compared to the control *** Based on our results, the fat-dissociation method is effective in shortening the duration of lymph node harvest in gastric cancer surgery.
