Predator-prey encounters:deciphering the robbery relationship between highwayman flies and their ant victims

Examples of predator–prey interactions in which flies rob ants are uncommon.To date,this behavior has only been recorded in the genus Bengalia Robineau-Desvoidy(Bengaliinae,Diptera,Calliphoridae).These predatory flies ambush ants,and rob them of the food or offspring that they are carrying.However,because of the rarity of this behavior,the reasons and consequences(evolutionary advantages)are unknown,and indeed,the behavior has been sometimes considered anecdotal.In this study,we employed field investigations and behavioral analyses to investigate whether the sex of the fly Bengalia varicolor,or the weight and quality of the food carried by Pheidole nodus ants influenced fly–ant interactions in their natural habitats.We show that food weight and quality influenced the behavior of B.varicolor independent of the fly’s sex.Robbing behavior by the flies was more successful when the food robbed was of high-quality and light in weight.Furthermore,the weight of the food robbed modulated the escape distance the flies could carry it.This then may affect the food quality and weight transported by the ants.This is a novel example of deciphering the relationship between highwayman flies and their ant victims.Given the widespread distribution of Bengalia flies,we suggest that such interspecific predator–prey encounters may shape the robbery interactions and the carrying behavior of further ant species in nature.

Astragaloside IV Alleviates Acute Liver Failure Induced by D-GalN/LPS by Upregulating Autophagy and Reducing Inflammation

Acute liver failure(ALF)is a life-threatening condition that manifests in an extremely serious manner and progresses rapidly.The following study investigated the protective effect of astragaloside IV(AS-IV),a traditional Chinese drug,on ALF,and its underlying mechanisms,focusing on autophagy and inflammation regulation.Mice were randomly divided into a saline group,a D-galactosamine and lipopolysac-charide(D-GalN/LPS)group and an AS-IV group.Biochemical analysis,immunohistochemistry,cytometric bead array,high-throughput quantitative PCR,flow cytometry and Western analysis were used to assess inflammation and liver damage 5 hours after D-GalN/LPS ex-posure.Astragaloside IV treatment reduced mortality by alleviating D-GalN/LPS–induced hepatic damage and decreasing inflammation(decreasing Ly6c+monocyte levels,reducing inflammatory cytokines and increasing anti-inflammatory factors)as well as upregulating au-tophagy.Furthermore,PCR array was used to detect expression of autophagy-related genes,which demonstrated a Log2 fold change in gene expression between the AS-IV and D-GalN/LPS groups ranging from 1.19 to-3.53,with Tnfsf10 showing the largest alteration be-tween the two groups.These data suggest that AS-IV may alleviate ALF by upregulating autophagy and reducing inflammation,and it may therefore be an interesting drug for alleviating ALF.

Owing to the numerous benefits,including low cost and great theoretical capacity,V3S4 has been a research hotspot for Li+/Na+/K+storage.Nonetheless,the V3S4electrode with long cycling stability and high specific capacities continues to pose significant challenges.In this work,vacuum vulcanization is combined with electrospinning to synthesize V3S4/C composite nanofibers （V3S4@CNF）.

A facile strategy for large-scale production of 2D nanosheets exfoliated by three-roll milling

Two-dimensional(2D)nanomaterials,such as graphene,MoS_(2),and MAX,have attracted increasing research attention in recent years due to their unique structural and performance advantages.However,their complex production processes and equipment requirements are significant issues affecting their widespread use.Here,with an exfoliation strategy using three-roll milling,we present a simple,cost-effective,and extensible method to produce multilayer graphene,BN,MoS_(2),and Ti_(3)AlC_(2) nanosheets.The roller and phenolic resin created three kinds of forces on the layered 2D materials,i.e.,shear forces,compressive forces,and adhesive forces,which exfoliated layered materials from their edges and surfaces into nanosheets.Subsequently,the exfoliated materials were ultrasonically washed with alcohol,treated with ultrasonic vibration,and centrifuged to obtain 2D nanomaterials.The easy operation and high yield are attractive for research based on the construction of high-performance 2D nanosheet-based devices at low cost.Herein,the obtained multilayer graphene and MoS_(2) nanosheets were used as anode materials of sodium/potassium-ion batteries,respectively,to test their electrochemical properties.Better performances are obtained compared with their primary bulk materials.

Background Hematoma expansion is a determinant of poor outcome of intracerebral hemorrhage but occurs frequently,especially in warfarin-associated intracerebral hemorrhage(W-ICH).In the present study,we employ the warfarin-associated intracerebral hemorrhage(W-ICH)rat model,to explore the efficacy and potential mechanism of glibenclamide pretreatment on hematoma expansion after intracerebral hemorrhage,hoping to provide proof of concept that glibenclamide in stroke primary and secondary prevention is also potentially beneficial for intracerebral hemorrhage patients at early stage.Methods In the present study,we tested whether glibenclamide,a common hypoglycemic drug,could attenuate hematoma expansion in a rat model of W-ICH.Hematoma expansion was evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging;brain injury was evaluated by brain edema and neuronal death;and functional outcome was evaluated by neurological scores.Then blood-brain barrier integrity was assessed using Evans blue extravasation and tight junction-related protein.Results The data indicated that glibenclamide pretreatment significantly attenuated hematoma expansion at 24 h after W-ICH,thus mitigating brain edema and neuronal death and promoting neurological function recovery,which may benefit from alleviating blood-brain barrier disruption by suppressing matrix metallopeptidase-9.Conclusions The results indicate that glibenclamide pretreatment in stroke primary and secondary prevention might be a promising therapy for hematoma expansion at the early stage of W-ICH.

Preparation and Analysis of Carbon Fiber-Silicon Carbide Thermally Conductive Asphalt Concrete

An experimental investigation into the thermal conductivity of CF-SiC two-phase composite asphalt concrete is presented.The main objective of this study was to verify the possibility of using SiC powder instead of mineral powder as the thermal conductive filler to prepare a new type of asphalt concrete and improve the efficiency of electrothermal snow and ice melting systems accordingly.The thermal conductivity of asphalt concrete prepared with different thermally conductive fillers was tested by a transient plane source method,and the related performances were measured.Then the temperature rise rate and surface temperature were studied through field heating tests.Finally,the actual ice melting efficiency of the thermally conductive asphalt concrete was evaluated using an effective electrothermal system.As shown by the experimental results,the composite made of SiC powder and carbon fiber has a high thermal conductivity.When SiC replaces mineral powder,the thermal conductivity of the asphalt mixture increases first and then decreases with the increase of carbon fiber content.In the present study,in particular,the thermal conductivity attained a peak when the carbon fiber content was 0.2%of the aggregate mass.

Intermittent Theta Burst Stimulation Attenuates Cognitive Deficits and Alzheimer’s Disease-Type Pathologies via ISCA1-Mediated Mitochondrial Modulation in APP/PS1 Mice

Intermittent theta burst stimulation(iTBS),a time-saving and cost-effective repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation regime,has been shown to improve cognition in patients with Alzheimer’s disease(AD).However,the specific mechanism underlying iTBS-induced cognitive enhancement remains unknown.Previous studies suggested that mitochondrial functions are modulated by magnetic stimulation.Here,we showed that iTBS upregulates the expression of iron-sulfur cluster assembly 1(ISCA1,an essential regulatory factor for mitochondrial respiration)in the brain of APP/PS1 mice.In vivo and in vitro studies revealed that iTBS modulates mitochondrial iron-sulfur cluster assembly to facilitate mitochondrial respiration and function,which is required for ISCA1.Moreover,iTBS rescues cognitive decline and attenuates AD-type pathologies in APP/PS1 mice.The present study uncovers a novel mechanism by which iTBS modulates mitochondrial respiration and function via ISCA1-mediated iron-sulfur cluster assembly to alleviate cognitive impairments and pathologies in AD.We provide the mechanistic target of iTBS that warrants its therapeutic potential for AD patients.

Characteristics and main controlling factors of helium resources in the main petroliferous basins of the North China Craton

At present, the main controlling factors of helium accumulation is one of the key scientific problems restricting the exploration and development of helium reservoir. In this paper, based on the calculation results of He generation rate and the geochemical characteristics of the produced gas, both the similarities and differences between natural gas and He resources in the Bohai Bay, Ordos and the surrounding Songliao Basin are compared and analyzed, discussing the main controlling factors of helium resources in the three main petroliferous basins of the North China Craton. It is found that the three basins of Bohai Bay, Ordos and Songliao have similar characteristics of source rocks, reservoirs and cap rocks, that's why their methane resource characteristics are essentially the same. The calculated ~4He generation per cubic metamorphic crystalline basement in the three basins is roughly equivalent, which is consistent with the measured He resources, and it is believed that the ~4He of radiogenic from the crust is the main factor controlling the overall He accumulation in the three basins;there is almost no contribution of the mantle-derived CH_4, which suggests that the transport and uplift of mantle-derived ~3He carried by the present-day magmatic activities along the deep-large faults is not the main reason for the mantle-derived ~3He mixing in the basins. Combined with the results of regional volcanic and geophysical studies,it is concluded that under the background of the destruction of North China Craton, magma intrusion carried a large amount of mantle-derived material and formed basic volcanic rocks in the Bohai Bay Basin and Songliao Basin, which replenished mantle-derived ~3He for the interior of the basins, and that strong seismic activities in and around the basins also promoted the upward migration of mantle source ~3He. Elucidating the anti-obesity phytochemicals in chenpi and their molecular mechanisms

Obesity has become a significant global public health issue. Previous studies have found that the chenpi has the anti-obesity activity. However， the anti-obesity phytochemicals and their mechanisms are still unclear. This study investigated the anti-obesity phytochemicals and molecular mechanisms involved in treating obesity by chenpi through network pharmacology and molecular docking. Seventeen bioactive phytochemicals from chenpi and its 475 related anti-obesity targets have been identified. The KEGG pathway analysis showed that the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway， MAPK signaling pathway， AMPK signaling pathway， and NF-kappa B signaling pathway are the main signaling pathways involved in the anti-obesity effect of chenpi. According to molecular docking analysis， the phytochemicals of chenpi can bind to central anti-obesity targets. Based on the ADMET analysis and network pharmacology results， tangeretin exhibited the lowest predicted toxicity and the highest potential for anti-obesity effects. In the in vitro lipid accumulation model， tangeretin effectively suppressed the FFA-induced lipid in HepG2 cells by upregulating the PI3K/Akt/GSK3β signaling pathway based on the result of q-PCR and Western Blotting. The outcomes of this research give insights for future research on the anti-obesity phytochemicals and molecular mechanisms derived from chenpi， also providing the theoretical basis for developing anti-obesity functional foods based on chenpi.

Chemical cleaning and disinfection are crucial steps for eliminating infection in root canal treatment. However, irrigant selection or irrigation procedures are far from clear. The vapor lock effect in the apical region has yet to be solved, impeding irrigation efficacy and resulting in residual infections and compromised treatment outcomes.
