The preoperative and postoperative PVEP in 79 eyes of 45 patients with three types of congenital namely lamellar cataract, nuclear cataract and total cataract was studied. The results showed that visual acuity of patients who could be cooperatively examined was improved significantly after operation. The examination of PVEP revealed that more abnormal wave-formes were found in total cataract group before operation. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of one-site combined phacoemulsification and trabeculectomy in the management of cataract patients with drug-controllable glaucoma. Methods : Twenty-four cases (25 eyes) of cataract patients with glaucoma whose intraocular pressure could be controlled by drugs were observed. All had undergone one-site combined phacoemulsification and trabeculectomy. Intraocular pressure and visual acuity were ***: The follow-up was 1-21 months. Postoperative visual acuity was 0.4-0.6 in 9 eyes, 0.7-0.9 in 7 eyes and 1.0 or better in 9 eyes. Postoperative intraocular pressure was 2.17±0.764kPa (16.28±5.73mmHg), 1.83±0.90kPa (13.74 ± 6. 77mmHg) lower than that before surgery (t= 11.89, P<0.01). Comparison of Trans-scleral Fixation of PMMA and Foldable Intraocular Lens in Children

Purpose: To observe the difference of the effects of PMMA and foldable intraocular lenses (IOLs) trans-sclerally fixed in pediatric eyes.Methods: Thirty-two children (43 eyes) who had undergone trans-scleral fixation of IOL were retrospected, of whom 5 children were implanted PMMA IOL in both eyes, 6children were implanted PMMA IOL in one eye and foldable IOL in the other eye, 12children were implanted foldable IOL in one eye and 9 chilrden were implanted PMMA IOL in one eye. Mean age was 5.3 years ( range 2.5 ～ 12 years ). Twelve children had traumatic cataract and the others congenital cataract before lens extraction.Results: Foldable group (18 eyes ): Mean follow-up was 12.1 months. Visual acuity (VA): compared with the best corrected VA before IOL fixation, postoperative best corrected VA improved in 16 eyes, remained unchanged in 2 eyes. In 14 eyes, one or two stitches were needed to seal the incision. Complications: Severe anterior chamber reaction was seen in 3 eyes. Intraocular bleeding was found in 3 eyes. IOL decentration was detected in 1 eye. Iris capture of IOL was seen in one eye. PMMA group (25 eyes ):Mean follow-up was 20.3 months. Visual acuity (VA): compared with the best corrected VA before IOL fixation, postoperative best corrected VA improved in 19 eyes,remained unchanged in 5 eyes and got worse in one eye. In 24 eyes, one to three stitches were needed to seal the incision. Complications: Severe anterior chamber reaction was seen in 5 eyes. Intraocular bleeding was found in 4 eyes. IOL decentration was seen in one eye. Iris capture of IOL was seen in 3 eyes. Intraocular pressure elevated in one eye.Conclusion: Our study shows that trans-scleral fixation of IOL is a safe procedure in pediatric eyes. Foldable IOL showed similar effect compared with PMMA IOL in pediatric trans-scleral fixation. Eye Science 2001; 17:61 ～ 64.

Purpose: To evaluate the influence of cataract surgery on eyes of children between 1-5 years *** and Methods : Forty- seven cases of pediatric cataract, including 31 cases of bilateral congenital cataract and 16 cases of unilateral posttraumatic cataract, were retrospected. Of the 31 cases of congenital cataract, 19 cases (group l) had undergone cataract extraction with intraocular lens(IOL) implantation, 12 (group 2) had undergone cataract extraction without IOL implantation. Each of them had their two eyes operated seperately at an interval of 1 year or longer. Of the 16 cases of posttraumatic catatract,6 (group 3) had undergone cataract extraction with IOL implantation and 10 (group 4) had undergone cataract extraction without IOL implantation. Mean age at the time of interested surgery was 2.9 years ( range from 1.1 to 5.1 years) . Purpose:To estimate the prevalence of pterygium and its influence on visual acuity in aged population of Doumen County,southern ***:A population-based survey was conducted in Doumen County,the rural area of southern china,twenty-seven sample units were selected by random *** prevalence and severity of pterygium and it-related low visual acuity were ***:Of the total 4762 individuals aged 50 years or over,4214 were *** prevalence of pterygium was 33.01% in subjects aged 50 years or *** was a significantly higher prevalence in female(35.70%)than in male(29.70%,P=0.025).The prevalence of pterygium in age groups of 50s,60s,70s and 80s years old is 33.98%,36.40%,30.73% and 25.40%,*** of the pterygia were located in the nasal side(93.31%)of cornea,and only 6.69% in the temporal side.0.92% of the eyes had visual acuity less than 0.32,which were directly caused by ***:The current survey suggests that the pterygium is one of the most common diseases of external eye in th population ged 50 years and *** is still leading to the impairment of visual acuity in the rural area.

We studied the corneal curvature of 161 eyes in 101 patients, aged from 50 to 80 years (mean: 63 years), with senile cataract using the Topographic Modeling System (IMS) preoperatively. The results revealed that mean surface asymmetry index (SAD was 0. 36 and mean surface regularity index (SRI) 0. 79. Simulated keratometry reading (Sim K) was 44. 46 D, and 43. 56 D.
