Kronos:towards bus contention-aware job scheduling in warehouse scale computers

While researchers have proposed many techniques to mitigate the contention on the shared cache and memory bandwidth, none of them has considered the memory bus contention due to split lock. Our study shows that the split lock may cause 9X longer data access latency without saturating the memory bandwidth. To minimize the impact of split lock, we propose Kronos, a runtime system composed of an online bus contention tolerance meter and a bus contention-aware job scheduler. The meter characterizes the tolerance of jobs to the “pressure” of bus contention and builds a tolerance model with the polynomial regression technique. The job scheduler allocates user jobs to the physical nodes in a contention aware manner. We design three scheduling policies that minimize the number of required nodes while ensuring the Service Level Agreement (SLA) of all the user jobs, minimize the number of jobs that suffer from SLA violation without enough nodes, and maximize the overall performance without considering the SLA violation, respectively. Adopting the three policies, Kronos reduces the number of the required nodes by 42.1% while ensuring the SLA of all the jobs, reduces the number of the jobs that suffer from SLA violation without enough nodes by 72.8%, and improves the overall performance by 35.2% without considering SLA.

The interpretation of patterns of biodiversity requires the disentanglement of geographical and environmental variables.Disjunct alpine communities are geographically isolated from one another but experience similar environmental impacts.Isolated homogenous habitats may promote speciation but constrain functional trait variation.In this study,we examined the hypothesis that dispersal limitation promotes taxonomic divergence,whereas habitat similarity in alpine mountains leads to functional convergence.We performed standardized field investigation to sample non-volant small mammals from 18 prominent alpine sites in the Three Parallel Rivers area.We estimated indices quantifying taxonomic and functional alpha-and beta-diversity,as well as beta-diversity components.We then assessed the respective importance of geographical and environmental predictors in explaining taxonomic and functional compositions.No evidence was found to show that species were more functionally similar than expected in local assemblages.However,the taxonomic turnover components were higher than functional ones(0.471±0.230 vs.0.243±0.215),with nestedness components showing the opposite pattern(0.063±0.054 vs.0.269±0.225).This indicated that differences in taxonomic compositions between sites occurred from replacement of functionally similar species.Geographical barriers were the key factor influencing both taxonomic total dissimilarity and turnover components,whereas functional betadiversity was primarily explained by climatic factors such as minimum temperature of the coldest month.Our findings provide empirical evidence that taxonomic and functional diversity patterns can be independently driven by different ecological processes.Our results point to the importance of clarifying different components of beta-diversity to understand the underlying mechanisms of community assembly.These results also shed light on the assembly rules and ecological processes of terrestrial mammal communities in extreme environments.

Rational electrolyte design is essential for stabilizing high-energy-density lithium(Li)metal batteries but is plagued by poor understanding on the effect of electrolyte component properties on solvation structure and interfacial chemistry.Herein,regulating the solvation structure in localized high-concentration electrolytes(LHCE)by weakening the solvating power of solvents is proposed for high-performance LHCE.1,3-dimethoxypropane(DMP)solvent has relatively weak solvating power but maintains the high solubility of Li salts,thus impelling the formation of nanometric aggregates where an anion coordinates to more than two Li-ions(referred to AGG-n)in LHCE.The decomposition of AGG-n increases the Li F content in solid electrolyte interphase(SEI),further enabling uniform Li deposition.The cycle life of Li metal batteries with DMP-based LHCE is 2.1 times(386 cycles)as that of advanced ether-based LHCE under demanding conditions.Furthermore,a Li metal pouch cell of 462Wh kg^(-1)undergoes 58 cycles with the DMP-based LHCE pioneeringly.This work inspires ingenious solvating power regulation to design high-performance electrolytes for practical Li metal batteries.

Bitcoin, which was initially introduced by Nakamoto, is the most disruptive and impactive cryptocurrency. The core Bitcoin technology is the so-called blockchain protocol. In recent years, several studies have focused on rigorous analyses of the security of Nakamoto’s blockchain protocol in an asynchronous network where network delay must be considered. Wei, Yuan, and zheng investigated the effect of a long delay attack against Nakamoto’s blockchain protocol. However, their proof only holds in the honest miner setting. In this study, we improve Wei, Yuan and zheng’s result using a stronger model where the adversary can perform long delay attacks and corrupt a certain fraction of the miners. We propose a method to analyze the converge event and demonstrate that the properties of chain growth, common prefix, and chain quality still hold with reasonable parameters in our stronger model.

Increased Prevalence of Thyroid Nodules Across Nearly 10 Years in Shanghai,China

Objective This study aimed to determine whether the prevalence of thyroid nodules(TNs)increased due to modern lifestyles or other factors,despite the advances in screening and diagnostic tools.Methods This study included 3474 pairs of participants,who were matched by gender and age(±3 years)from two cross-sectional sampling surveys:(1)the program on the iodine nutritional status and related health status of residents in Shanghai in 2009;(2)the thyroid disease screening program for adults in Shanghai between 2017 and 2018.The prevalence of TNs and thyroid diseases in 2009 and 2017–2018 were compared,and the potential risk factors of TNs were detected.Results The prevalence of TNs in 2009 was 28.9%:22.5%in males and 34.5%in females.In 2017,this increased to 43.8%:37.9%in males and 49.1%in females.The prevalence of TNs significantly increased from 2009 to 2017(odds ratio,1.486;95%confidence interval,1.238–1.786).In addition,female gender,thyroid disease history,and age were the main risk factors for TNs after adjusting for confounders in the logistic regression across the time period.Conclusion The prevalence of TNs significantly increased across nearly 10 years in Shanghai.

This paper describes the first case of a reductive coupling reaction with indene,a non-heteroatom olefin used as a reducing agent.The scope of the substrate is wide.The homo-coupling,cross-coupling,and synthesis of 12 and 14-membered rings were realized.The control experiment,indene-product curve and density functional theory calculations showed that the η^(3)-palladium indene intermediate was formed by C-H activation in the presence of cesium carbonate.We speculate that the final product was obtained through a Pd(IV)intermediate or aryl ligand exchange.In addition,we excluded the formation of palladium anion(Pd(0)^(-))intermediates.

Fibrosis can occur in almost all tissues and organs and affects normal physiological function,which may have serious consequences,such as organ failure.However,there are currently no effective,broad-spectmm drugs suitable for clinical application.Revealing the process of fibrosis is an important prerequisite for the development of new therapeutic targets and drugs.Studies have shown that the limiting of myofibroblast activation or the promoting of their elimination can ameliorate fibrosis.However,it has not been reported whether a direct decrease in cell contraction can inhibit fibrosis in vivo.Here,we have shown that(-)-blebbistatin(Ble),a non-muscle myosin II inhibitor,displayed significant inhibition of liver fibrosis in different chronic injury mouse models in vivo.We found that Ble reduced the stiffness of fibrotic tissues from the early stage,which reduced the extent of myofibroblast activation induced by a stiffer extracellular matrix(ECM).Moreover,Ble also reduced the activation of myofibroblasts induced by TGF-β1,which is the most potent pro-fibrotic cytokine.Mechanistically,Ble reduced mechanical contraction,which inhibited the assembly of stress fibers,decreased the F/G-actin ratio,and led to the exnucleation of YAPJ and MRTF-A.Finally,we verified its broad-spectrum antifibrotic effect in multiple models of organ fibrosis.Our results highlighted the important role of mechanical contraction in myofibroblast activation and maintenance,rather than just a characteristic of activation,suggesting that it may be a potential target to explore broad-spectrum drugs for the treatment of fibrotic diseases.

Abstract Objective This paper aims to investigate the anti-tumor mechanism of inactivated Sendai virus （Hemagglutinating virus of Japan envelope, HVJ-E） for murine melanoma （B16F10）. Methods The murine dendritic cells （DCs） were treated with HVJ-E, and then the cytokines secreted from DCs and costimulation-related molecules on DCs were measured. Meanwhile, the expression of 13-catenin in HVJ-E treated murine melanoma cells was detected. In addition, HVJ-E was intratumorally injected into the melanoma on C57BL/6 mice, and the immune cells, CTL response and tumor volume were analyzed. Results HVJ-E injected into B16F10 melanoma obviously inhibited the growth of the tumor and prolonged the survival time of the tumor-bearing mice. Profiles of cytokines secreted by dendritic cells （DCs） after HVJ-E stimulation showed that the number of cytokines released was significantly higher than that elicited by PBS （P〈O.05）. The co-stimulation-related molecules on DCs were comparable to those stimulated by LPS. Immunohistochemical examinations demonstrated the repression of 13-catenin in B16F10 melanoma cells after HVJ-E treatment. Meanwhile, real-time reverse transcription PCR revealed that HVJ-E induced a remarkable infiltration of CDllc positive cells, chemokine ligand 10 （CXCL10） molecules, interleukin-2 （IL-2） molecule, CD4^＋ and CD8^＋ T cells into HVJ-E injected tumors. Furthermore, the mRNA expression level of 13-catenin in the HVJ-E injected tumors was also down-regulated. In addition, B16F10-specific CTLs were induced significantly after HVJ-E was injected into the tumor-bearing mice. Conclusion This is the first report to show the effective inhibition of melanoma tumors by HVJ-E alone and the mechanism through which it induces antitumor immune responses and regulates important signal pathways for melanoma invasion. Therefore, HVJ-E shows its prospect as a novel therapeutic for melanoma therapy.
