Glutamine and recombinant human growth hormone protect intestinal barrier function following portal hypertension surgery

AIM： To evaluate the effects of combined treatment of glutamine （Gln） and recombinant human growth hormone（rhGH） on intestinal barrier function following portal hypertension surgery. METHODS： This study was designed as a prospective, randomized and controlled clinical trial. Forty two patients after portal hypertension surgery were randomly assigned into 2 groups： control group （n = 20） and supplemental group （adding Gin and rhGH, n = 22）. Every patient received isocaloric and isonitrogenous standard total parenteral nutrition （TPN） starting 3 d after surgery for 7 d. Blood samples were obtained before surgery and at the 3rd and 10th day postoperatively. Host immunity was evaluated by measuring levels of CD4, CD8, CD4/CD8, IgG, IgM and IgA, and the inflammatory responses were determined by assessing IL-2, TNF-α and C-reactive protein （CRP） levels. Intestinal permeability and integrity was evaluated by L/M test and histological examination, respectively. RESULTS： On postoperative d 10, CD4, CD4/CD8, IgG and IL-2 levels in supplemental group were significantly higher than those in control group （33.7±5.5 vs 31.0 ± 5.4, P 〈 0.05, （1.17±0.32 vs 1.05 ± 0.15, P 〈 0.05, 13.94±1.09 vs 12.33±1.33, P 〈 0.05, and 368.12 ± 59.25 vs 318.12 ± 45.65, P 〈 0.05, respectively）, whereas the increase in serum TNF-α concentration was significantly reduced （41.02 ± 27.56 vs 160.09 ± 35.17, P 〈 0.05）. The increase in L/M ratio was significantly lower in the supplemental group than in the control group （0.0166 ± 0.0017 vs 0.0339 ± 0.0028, P 〈 0.05）. Moreover, mucosal integrity in the supplemental group was better than in the control group.CONCLUSION： Postoperative administration of TPN supplemented with Gin and rhGH in patients after portal hypertension surgery improves immune function, modulates inflammatory response, prevents the intestinal mucous membrane from atrophy and preserves intestinal integrity.

Gender difference in acquired seizure susceptibility in adult rats after early complex febrile seizures

Gender differences are involved in many neurological disorders including epilepsy. However, little is known about the effect of gender difference on the risk of epilepsy in adults with a specific early pathological state such as complex febrile seizures（FSs） in infancy. Here we used a well-established complex FS model in rats and showed that：（1） the susceptibility to seizures induced by hyperthermia, pentylenetetrazol（PTZ）, and maximal electroshock（MES） was similar in male and female rat pups, while males were more susceptible to PTZ- and MES-induced seizures than age-matched females in normal adult rats;（2） adult rats with complex FSs in infancy acquired higher seizure susceptibility than normal rats; importantly, female FS rats were more susceptible to PTZ and MES than male FS rats; and（3） the protein expression of interleukin-1β, an infl ammatory factor associated with seizure susceptibility, was higher in adult FS females than in males, which may reflect a gender-difference phenomenon of seizure susceptibility. Our results provide direct evidence that the acquired seizure susceptibility after complex FSs is gender-dependent.

Early hypoactivity of hippocampal rhythms during epileptogenesis after prolonged febrile seizures in freely-moving rats

Prospective and experimental studies have shown that individuals with early-life complex/prolonged febrile seizures （FSs） have a high incidence of temporal lobe epilepsy during adulthood, revealing a close relationship between FSs and epilepsy. However, little is known about how epileptogenesis develops after FSs. The present study was designed to investigate acquired seizure susceptibility and analyze local field potentials during the latent period after FSs. We found that the seizure susceptibility decreased in 35-day- old （P35） FS rats but increased in P60 FS rats. Consistently, hippocampal electroencephalogram （EEG） power in every band was decreased at P35 but increased at P60 in FS rats. Our results provide direct evidence for hypoactivity but not hyperactivity during the early phase of the latent period, displaying a broad decrease in hippocampal rhythms. These characteristic EEG changes can be a useful biomarker for the early diagnosis of epileptogenesis induced by FSs.

The role of axon guidance molecules in the pathogenesis of epilepsy

Current treatments for epilepsy can only manage the symptoms of the condition but cannot alter the initial onset or halt the progression of the disease. Consequently, it is crucial to identify drugs that can target novel cellular and molecular mechanisms and mechanisms of action. Increasing evidence suggests that axon guidance molecules play a role in the structural and functional modifications of neural networks and that the dysregulation of these molecules is associated with epilepsy susceptibility. In this review, we discuss the essential role of axon guidance molecules in neuronal activity in patients with epilepsy as well as the impact of these molecules on synaptic plasticity and brain tissue remodeling. Furthermore, we examine the relationship between axon guidance molecules and neuroinflammation, as well as the structural changes in specific brain regions that contribute to the development of epilepsy. Ample evidence indicates that axon guidance molecules, including semaphorins and ephrins, play a fundamental role in guiding axon growth and the establishment of synaptic connections. Deviations in their expression or function can disrupt neuronal connections, ultimately leading to epileptic seizures. The remodeling of neural networks is a significant characteristic of epilepsy, with axon guidance molecules playing a role in the dynamic reorganization of neural circuits. This, in turn, affects synapse formation and elimination. Dysregulation of these molecules can upset the delicate balance between excitation and inhibition within a neural network, thereby increasing the risk of overexcitation and the development of epilepsy. Inflammatory signals can regulate the expression and function of axon guidance molecules, thus influencing axonal growth, axon orientation, and synaptic plasticity. The dysregulation of neuroinflammation can intensify neuronal dysfunction and contribute to the occurrence of epilepsy. This review delves into the mechanisms associated with

Blast furnace gas(BFG)is an important by-product energy for the iron and steel industry and has been widely used for heating or electricity ***,the undesirable contaminants in BFG(especially H_(2)S)generate harmful environmental *** desulfurization of BFG is urgent for integrated steel plants due to the stringent ultra-low emission *** with other desulfurization materials,zeolite-based adsorbents represent a viable option with low costs and long service *** this study,an ammonia-induced CuO modified 13X adsorbent(NH3–CuO/13X)was prepared for H_(2)S removal from simulated BFG at low *** XRD,H_(2)-TPR and TEM analysis proved that smaller CuO particles were formed and the dispersion of Cu on the surface of 13X zeolite was improved via the induction of *** on H_(2)S adsorption performance of the adsorbent was carried out using simulated BFG,and the results showed that NH3–CuO/13X-3 has better breakthrough sulfur capacity,which was more than twice the sulfur capacity of CuO/*** is proposed that the enhanced desulfurization performance of NH3–CuO/13X is attributed to an abundant pore of 13X,and combined action of 13X and *** work provided an effective way to improve the sulfur capacity of zeolite-based adsorbents via impregnation method by ammonia induction.
