Assessment of the Southern Ocean Sea Surface Temperature Biases in CMIP5 and CMIP6 Models

This work evaluates the performances of climate models in simulating the Southern Ocean(SO) sea surface temperature(SST) by a large ensemble from phases 5 and 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project(CMIP5 and CMIP6). By combining models from the same community sharing highly similar SO SST biases and eliminating the effect of global-mean biases on local SST biases, the results reveal that the ensemble-mean SO SST bias at 70° – 30°S decreases from 0.38℃ in CMIP5 to 0.28℃ in CMIP6, together with increased intermodel consistency. The dominant mode of the intermodel variations in the zonal-mean SST biases is characterized as a meridional uniform warm bias pattern, explaining 79.1% of the intermodel variance and exhibiting positive principal values for most models. The ocean mixed layer heat budget further demonstrates that the SST biases at 70° – 50°S primarily result from the excessive summertime heating effect from surface net heat flux. The biases in surface net heat flux south of 50°S are largely impacted by surface shortwave radiation from cloud and clear sky components at different latitudes. North of 50°S, the underestimated westerlies reduce the northward Ekman transport and hence northward cold advection in models, leading to warm SST biases year-round. In addition, the westerly biases are primarily traced back to the atmosphere-alone model simulations forced by the observed SST and sea ice. These results disclose the thermal origin at the high latitude and dynamical origin at the low latitude of the SO SST biases and underscore the significance of the deficiencies of atmospheric models in producing the SO SST biases.

Structure regulating of metal clusters in carbonized metallic organic frameworks for high-efficient microwave absorption via tuning interaction strength between metals and ligands

Differential bonding behaviors of sodium/potassium-ion storage in sawdust waste carbon derivatives

Sodium-ion batteries(SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries(PIBs) are the most promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries, and thus have drawn intensive research attention. Porous carbon materials from different precursors have been widely used as anode materials owing to their compatible storage effectiveness of both larger radii sodium and potassium ions. However, the differential bonding behaviors of Na and K ions with porous carbon-based anode are the significant one worth investigating, which could provide a clean picture of alkali ions storage mechanism. Therefore, in this work, we prepare a porous carbon network derived from sawdust(SDC) wastes, to further analyze the differences on sodium and potassium ions storage behaviors in terms of bond-forming process. It is found that, as-prepared SDC anodes could deliver stable sodium and potassium storage capacities, however, there are notable distinctions in terms of electrochemical behaviors and diffusion processes. By virtue of ex-situ XRD and Raman spectroscopy, the phase transition reaction of potassium ions could be well-observed, and the results shows that the multiple intercalated compounds was formed in SDC network during ions insertion, further resulting in slower diffusion kinetics and larger resistance compared to non-bonded process of sodium ions storage. This study provides more insights into the differences between sodium and potassium ions storage, as well as the energy storage mechanism of porous carbon as anodes for secondary batteries.

Recent advances in Pt catalysts and membrane electrode assemblies fabrication for proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs) have been identified as a highly promising means of achieving sustainable energy conversion. A crucial factor in enhancing the performance of PEMFCs for further potential energy applications is the advancement in the field of catalyst engineering that has led to remarkable performance enhancement in facilitating the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR). Subsequently, it is important to acknowledge that the techniques used in preparation of membrane electrode assemblies(MEAs), the vital constituents of PEMFCs, also possess direct and critical influence on exhibiting the full catalytic activity of meticulously crafted catalysts. Here, a succinct summary of the most recent advancements in Pt catalysts for ORR was offered and their underly catalytic mechanism were discussed. Then, both laboratory-scale and industrial-scale MEA fabrication techniques of Pt catalysts were summarized. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the connections between materials, process, and performance in MEA fabrication was presented in order to facilitate the development of optimal catalyst layers.

Sensitivity of ghost imaging compared to conventional imaging [Invited]

Ghost imaging has been attracting more and more attention, which provides a way to obtain images of objects with only a single-pixel detector. Considering possible applications, it becomes urgent to clarify the sensitivity of ghost imaging. Due to the unique characteristics of single-pixel detectors, which collect photons without distributing them to multiple pixels,often outperforming array sensors, ghost imaging is believed to be more sensitive than conventional imaging. However,a systematic analysis on the sensitivity of ghost imaging is yet to be completed. In this paper, we present a method for quantitatively assessing the sensitivity of ghost imaging. A detailed comparison is provided between ghost imaging and conventional imaging, taking into account the particle nature of photons and the noise of detection. With the settings of the two imaging methods being the same to the most extent, the minimal required number of detected photons for images of a certain quality is considered. For the thermal source version, ghost imaging demonstrates enhanced sensitivity under practical situations, with noise *** an entangled source, ghost imaging surpasses conventional imaging techniques in terms of sensitivity obviously. In one word, ghost imaging promises higher sensitivity at low photon flux and noisy situations.

Transient long-range distance measurement by a Vernier spectral interferometry

Rapid and long-range distance measurements are essential in various industrial and scientific applications,and among them,the dual-comb ranging system attracts great attention due to its high ***,the tem-poral asynchronous sampling results in the tradeoff between frame rate and ranging precision,and the non-ambiguity range(NAR)is also limited by the comb cycle,which hinders the further advancement of the dual-comb ranging *** this constraint,we introduce a Vernier spectral interferometry to improve the frame rate and NAR of the ranging ***,leveraging the dispersive time-stretch technology,the dual-comb interferometry becomes spectral ***,the asynchronous time step is unlimited,and the frame rate is improved to 100 ***,dual-wavelength bands are introduced to implement a Vernier spectral interferometry,whose NAR is enlarged from 1.5 m to 1.5 ***,this fast and long-range system also demonstrated high precision,with a 22.91-nm Allan deviation over 10-ms averaging *** a result,the proposed Vernier spectral interferometry ranging system is promising for diverse applications that necessitate rapid and extensive distance measurement.

A continuous and long-term in-situ stress measuring method based on fiber optic. Part I: Theory of inverse differential strain analysis

A method for in-situ stress measurement via fiber optics was proposed. The method utilizes the relationship between rock mass elastic parameters and in-situ stress. The approach offers the advantage of long-term stress measurements with high spatial resolution and frequency, significantly enhancing the ability to measure in-situ stress. The sensing casing, spirally wrapped with fiber optic, is cemented into the formation to establish a formation sensing nerve. Injecting fluid into the casing generates strain disturbance, establishing the relationship between rock mass properties and treatment ***, an optimization algorithm is established to invert the elastic parameters of formation via fiber optic strains. In the first part of this paper series, we established the theoretical basis for the inverse differential strain analysis method for in-situ stress measurement, which was subsequently verified using an analytical model. This paper is the fundamental basis for the inverse differential strain analysis method.
