Risk factors,prognostic factors,and nomograms for distant metastasis in patients with diagnosed duodenal cancer:A population-based study

BACKGROUND Duodenal cancer is one of the most common subtypes of small intestinal cancer,and distant metastasis(DM)in this type of cancer still leads to poor prognosis.Although nomograms have recently been used in tumor areas,no studies have focused on the diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of DM in patients with primary duodenal cancer.AIM To develop and evaluate nomograms for predicting the risk of DM and person-alized prognosis in patients with duodenal cancer.METHODS Data on duodenal cancer patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2019 were extracted from the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results database.Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify independent risk factors for DM in patients with duodenal cancer,and univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were used to determine independent prognostic factors in duodenal cancer patients with DM.Two novel nomograms were established,and the results were evaluated by receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves,calibration curves,and decision curve analysis(DCA).RESULTS A total of 2603 patients with duodenal cancer were included,of whom 457 cases(17.56%)had DM at the time of diagnosis.Logistic analysis revealed independent risk factors for DM in duodenal cancer patients,including gender,grade,tumor size,T stage,and N stage(P<0.05).Univariate and multivariate COX analyses further identified independent prognostic factors for duodenal cancer patients with DM,including age,histological type,T stage,tumor grade,tumor size,bone metastasis,chemotherapy,and surgery(P<0.05).The accuracy of the nomograms was validated in the training set,validation set,and expanded testing set using ROC curves,calibration curves,and DCA curves.The results of Kaplan-Meier survival curves(P<0.001)indicated that both nomograms accurately predicted the occurrence and prognosis of DM in patients with duodenal cancer.CONCLUSION The two nomograms are expected as effective tools for predicting DM risk in duodenal cancer patients

Flexible Ceramic Fibers: Recent Development in Preparation and Application

Flexible ceramic fibers(FCFs)have been developed for various advanced applications due to their superior mechanical flexibility,high temperature resistance,and excellent chemical stability.In this article,we present an overview on the recent progress of FCFs in terms of materials,fabrication methods,and applications.We begin with a brief introduction to FCFs and the materials for preparation of FCFs.After that,various methods for preparation of FCFs are discussed,including centrifugal spinning,electrospinning,solution blow spinning,self-assembly,chemical vapor deposition,atomic layer deposition,and polymer conversion.Recent applications of FCFs in various fields are further illustrated in detail,including thermal insulation,air filtration,water treatment,sound absorption,electromagnetic wave absorption,battery separator,catalytic application,among others.Finally,some perspectives on the future directions and opportunities for the preparation and application of FCFs are highlighted.We envision that this review will provide readers with some meaningful guidance on the preparation of FCFs and inspire them to explore more potential applications.

Dear editor,In recent years, data-driven car-following models have been developed based on their ability to drill down to information in driving data and their flexibility. According to a study by Fleming et al. [1], the main limitation of existing methods is an insufficient amount of natural driving data. In addition,there are many situations during actual driving processes,such as those under extreme conditions [2] and in the early stages of car-following behavior modeling. In these cases,sparse data learning algorithms are indispensable.

Ultrafast magnetization enhancement and spin current injection in magnetic multilayers by exciting the nonmagnetic metal

A systematic investigation of spin injection behavior in Au/FM(FM=Fe and Ni)multilayers is performed using the superdiffusive spin transport theory.By exciting the nonmagnetic layer,the laser-induced hot electrons may transfer spin angular momentum into the adjacent ferromagnetic(FM)metals resulting in ultrafast demagnetization or enhancement.We find that these experimental phenomena sensitively depend on the particular interface reflectivity of hot electrons and may reconcile the different observations in the experiment.Stimulated by the ultrafast spin currents carried by the hot electrons,we propose the multilayer structures to generate highly spin-polarized currents for the development of future ultrafast spintronics devices.The spin polarization of the electric currents carried by the hot electrons can be significantly enhanced by the joint effects of bulk and interfacial spin filtering.Meanwhile,the intensity of the generated spin current can be optimized by varying the number of repeated stacking units and the thickness of each metallic layer.

Intricate evolutions of multiple-period post-buckling patterns in bilayers

Surface instability of compliant film/substrate bilayers has raised considerable interests due to its broad applications such as wrinkle-driven surface renewal and antifouling,shape-morphing for camouflaging skins,and micro/nano-scale surface patterning control.However,it is still a challenge to precisely predict and continuously trace secondary bifurcation transitions in the nonlinear post-buckling region.Here,we develop lattice models to precisely capture the nonlinear morphology evolution with multiple mode transitions that occur in the film/substrate systems.Based on our models,we reveal an intricate post-buckling phenomenon involving successive flat-wrinkle-doubling-quadrupling-fold bifurcations.Pre-stretch and pre-compression of the substrate,as well as bilayer modulus ratio,can alter surface morphology of film/substrate bilayers.With high substrate pre-tension,hierarchical wrinkles emerge in the bilayer with a low modulus ratio,while a wrinkle-to-ridge transition occurs with a high modulus ratio.Besides,with moderate substrate pre-compression,the bilayer eventually evolves into a period-tripling mode.Phase diagrams based on neo-Hookean and Arruda-Boyce constitutions are drawn to characterize the influences of different factors and to provide an overall view of ultimate pattern formation.Fundamental understanding and quantitative prediction of the nonlinear morphological transitions of soft bilayer materials hold potential for multifunctional surface regulation.

Clinical and genetic findings in 13 Chinese children with keratinopathic ichthyosis

Importance:Keratinopathic ichthyosis(KPI)represents a group of predominantly autosomal dominant genodermatoses resulting from mutations in the KRT1,KRT2,or KRT10 genes.In KPI,the relationship between genotype and phenotype is complex.Objective:To analyze the clinical manifestations and gene mutations in Chinese patients with KPI.Methods:Clinical data were collected from 13 children diagnosed with KPI,and peripheral blood DNA samples were extracted from both the patients and their parents Next-generation sequencing was performed using a congenital ichthyosis multi-gene panel,and the selected variants in the patients and their parents were further validated using the Sanger sequencing method.Results:Genetic analysis identified missense mutations in either KRT1 or KRT10 in ten patients exhibiting varying degrees of severity and distinct features of epidermolytic ichthyosis.A missense hotspot mutation in KRT2 was identified in one patient with superficial epidermolytic ichthyosis.Additionally,two truncation mutations in KRT10 were detected,leading to the development of generalized ichthyosiform erythroderma.Ear malformation and ectropion at birth,scalp involvement,and palmoplantar hyperkeratosis were observed as early signs of ichthyosis with confetti.Interpretation:We analyzed the genotype-phenotype correlations in KPI,revealing that the types and locations of different mutations are associated with distinct phenotypic characteristics.Oral acitretin could be considered a treatment option for severe patients at an appropriate dosage and timing.

Column adsorption of Cu(Ⅱ) by polymer-supported nano-iron oxides in the presence of sulfate: Experimental and mathematical modeling

Polymer-supported hydrous iron oxides(HFOs) are promising for heavy metals removal from aqueous systems.The ubiquitous inorganic ligands, e.g., sulfate, are expected to exert considerable impacts on pollutants removal by these hybrid sorbents. Herein, we obtained a hybrid sorbent HFO-PS by encapsulating nanosized HFO into macroporous polystyrene(PS) resin. Both batch and column sorption experiments of Cu(Ⅱ) by HFO-PS were carried out in the presence of sulfate. Obviously, the presence of sulfate is favorable for Cu(Ⅱ) sorption onto HFO-PS.The performances of column Cu(Ⅱ) removal were fitted and predicted with Adams–Bohart, Clark, Thomas and BDST models. Thomas model is suggested best-fit to predict the breakthrough curves. Besides, a linear correlation is observed between breakthrough time and column length based on BDST model, which might be useful for predicting the breakthrough time for Cu(Ⅱ) removal by HFO-PS.

稻穗精准分割是准确估测水稻产量的关键。为实现大田环境下不同品种与生育期稻穗的准确分割,该研究提出了基于注意力机制的稻穗分割网络(Double Branch Squeeze-and-Excitation Network,DBSE-Net)。首先,提出一个双分支压缩与激励(DoubleBranchSqueeze-and-Excitation,DBSE)注意力模块,通过同时使用全局平均池化(GlobalAverage Pooling,GAP)和全局最大池化(Global Max Pooling,GMP)编码输入特征的通道信息,以实现更精准的通道注意力推断。然后,为了强化稻穗特征并抑制背景区域特征,将DBSE模块添加到编码-解码分割框架中构建DBSE-Net分割网络。最后,在自采集的稻穗图像数据集上进行分割性能测试,DBSE-Net对稻穗分割的像素准确率、平均交并比和F1分数分别达到了94.32%、87.59%和91.86%,比次优模型DeepLabv3+的结果分别高出1.61、2.56和1.20个百分点,在单张256×256(像素)图像上耗时0.03s,是DeepLabv3+分割速度的5.3倍。在公开的稻穗图像数据集上进行泛化性能测试,DBSE-Net能够有效分割出稻穗区域。该研究结果表明,DBSE-Net能够对不同品种与生育期稻穗实现高效精准分割,具有良好的泛化性,可以为水稻产量评估提供参考。

Learning from group supervision: the impact of supervision deficiency on multi-label learning

Multi-label learning studies the problem where one instance is associated with multiple labels.Weakly supervised multi-label learning has attracted considerable research attention because of the annotation difficulty. Majority of the studies on weakly supervised multi-label learning assume that one group of weak annotations is available for each instance; however, none of these studies considers multiple groups of weak annotations that can be easily acquired through crowdsourcing. Recent studies on crowdsourced multilabel learning observed that the current query strategies do not agree well with human habits and that data cannot be collected as expected. Therefore, this study aims to design a new query strategy in accordance with human behavior patterns to obtain multiple groups of weak annotations. Further, a learning algorithm is proposed based on neural networks for such type of data. In addition, this study qualitatively and empirically analyzes factors in the proposed query strategy that may impact further learning and provides insights to obtain better query strategy with respect to future crowdsourcing in case of multi-label data.

The MW5.5 earthquake on August 6,2023,in Pingyuan,Shandong,China:A rupture on a buried fault

On August 6,2023,a magnitude MW5.5 earthquake struck Pingyuan County,Dezhou City,Shandong Province,China.This event was significant as no large earthquakes had been recorded in the region for over a century,and no active fault had been previously identified.This study collects 1309 P-wave arrival times and 866 S-wave arrival times from 74 seismic stations less than 200 km to the epicenter to constrain the spatial distribution of the mainshock and its 125 early aftershocks by the double difference earthquake relocation method,and selects 864 P-waveforms from 288 stations located within 800 km of the epicenter to constrain the focal mechanism solution of the mainshock through centroid moment tensor inversion.The relocation and the inversion indicate,the Pingyuan MW5.5 earthquake was caused by a rupture on a buried fault,likely an extensive segment of the Gaotang fault.This buried fault exhibited a dip of approximately 75°to the northwest,with a strike of 222°,similar to the Gaotang fault.The rupture initiated at the depth of 18.6 km and propagated upward and northeastward.However,the ground surface was not broken.The total duration of the rupture was~6.0 s,releasing the scalar moment of 2.5895×1017 N·m,equivalent to MW5.54.The moment rate reached the maximum only 1.4 seconds after the rupture initiation,and the 90%scalar moment was released in the first 4.6 s.In the first 1.4 seconds of the rupture process,the rupture velocity was estimated to be 2.6 km/s,slower than the local S-wave velocity.As the rupture neared its end,the rupture velocity decreased significantly.This study provides valuable insights into the seismic characteristics of the Pingyuan MW5.5 earthquake,shedding light on the previously unidentified buried fault responsible for the seismic activity in the region.Understanding the behavior of such faults is crucial for assessing seismic hazards and enhancing earthquake preparedness in the future.
