Impacts of Ice-Ocean Stress on the Subpolar Southern Ocean:Role of the Ocean Surface Current

The mechanical influences involved in the interaction between the Antarctic sea ice and ocean surface current(OSC)on the subpolar Southern Ocean have been systematically investigated for the first time by conducting two simulations that include and exclude the OSC in the calculation of the ice-ocean stress(IOS), using an eddy-permitting coupled ocean-sea ice global model. By comparing the results of these two experiments, significant increases of 5%, 27%, and 24%, were found in the subpolar Southern Ocean when excluding the OSC in the IOS calculation for the ocean surface stress,upwelling, and downwelling, respectively. Excluding the OSC in the IOS calculation also visibly strengthens the total mechanical energy input to the OSC by about 16%, and increases the eddy kinetic energy and mean kinetic energy by about38% and 12%, respectively. Moreover, the response of the meridional overturning circulation in the Southern Ocean yields respective increases of about 16% and 15% for the upper and lower branches;and the subpolar gyres are also found to considerably intensify, by about 12%, 11%, and 11% in the Weddell Gyre, the Ross Gyre, and the Australian-Antarctic Gyre, respectively. The strengthened ocean circulations and Ekman pumping result in a warmer sea surface temperature(SST), and hence an incremental surface heat loss. The increased sea ice drift and warm SST lead to an expansion of the sea ice area and a reduction of sea ice volume. These results emphasize the importance of OSCs in the air-sea-ice interactions on the global ocean circulations and the mass balance of Antarctic ice shelves, and this component may become more significant as the rapid change of Antarctic sea ice.

Peridynamic Shell Model Based on Micro-Beam Bond

Peridynamics(PD)is a non-localmechanics theory that overcomes the limitations of classical continuummechanics(CCM)in predicting the initiation and propagation of cracks.However,the calculation efficiency of PDmodels is generally lower than that of the traditional finite elementmethod(FEM).Structural idealization can greatly improve the calculation efficiency of PD models for complex structures.This study presents a PD shell model based on the micro-beam bond via the homogenization assumption.First,the deformations of each endpoint of themicro-beam bond are calculated through the interpolation method.Second,the micro-potential energy of the axial,torsional,and bending deformations of the bond can be established from the deformations of endpoints.Finally,the micro moduli of the shellmodel can be obtained via the equivalence principle of strain energy density(SED).In addition,a new fracture criterion based on the SED of the micro-beam bond is adopted for crack simulation.Numerical examples of crack propagation are provided,and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed PD shell model.

Stabilizing effects of atomic Ti doping on high-voltage high-nickel layered oxide cathode for lithium-ion rechargeable batteries

High-voltage high-nickel lithium layered oxide cathodes show great application prospects to meet the ever-increasing demand for further improvement of the energy density of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)mainly due to their high output capacity.However,severe bulk structural degradation and undesired electrode-electrolyte interface reactions seriously endanger the cycle life and safety of the battery.Here,2 mol%Ti atom is used as modified material doping into LiNi_(0.8)Co_(0.2)Mn_(0.2O2)(NCM)to reform LiNi_(0.6)Co_(0.2)Mn_(0.18)Ti_(0.02)O_(2)(NCM-Ti)and address the long-standing inherent problem.At a high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V,NCM-Ti delivers a higher capacity retention ratio(91.8%vs.82.9%)after 150 cycles and a superior rate capacity(118 vs.105 mAh·g^(-1))at the high current density of 10 C than the pristine NCM.The designed high-voltage full battery with graphite as anode and NCM-Ti as cathode also exhibits high energy density(240 Wh·kg^(-1))and excellent electrochemical performance.The superior electrochemical behavior can be attributed to the improved stability of the bulk structure and the electrode-electrolyte interface owing to the strong Ti-O bond and no unpaired electrons.The in-situ X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrates that Ti-doping inhibits the undesired H2-H3 phase transition,minimizing the mechanical degradation.The ex-situ TEM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveal that Ti-doping suppresses the release of interfacial oxygen,reducing undesired interfacial reactions.This work provides a valuable strategic guideline for the application of high-voltage high-nickel cathodes in LIBs.

Simulation of the climatic effects of natural forcings during the pre-industrial era

The MPM-2,an Earth system model of intermediate complexity,is employed to study the climate sys-tem response to natural forcings during the pre-industrial era (1000-1800 AD),with a special focus on the surface air temperature (SAT) evolution. Solar radiation and volcanism are the primary natural forcings during this period. In the MPM-2,the solar radiation forcing determines the long-term trend of the climate system change,and the volcanic forcing intensifies (weakens) this trend. Ultimately,the combination of solar and volcanic forcings dominates the long-term changes of the climate system. These results are in good agreement with other model data or temperature reconstructions. Natural forcings can well explain the Little Ice Age (LIA) and the Medieval Warm Period (MWP). At the large regional scale,the SAT response to natural forcings is almost coincident with that of the Northern Hemisphere. Based on MPM-2 model results,it is concluded that the global climate gradually became cold during the pre-industrial era. However,MPM-2 model results substantially correlate with recon-structed solar and volcanic forcings. Namely,to some great extent,these results strongly rely on the forcing series data we choose. Therefore,in order to accurately simulate the secular variation of the historical climate,it is very important to reconstruct well the solar radiation change and volcanic forc-ing data are well reconstructed for the past 10000 years,at least for the past 2000 years,in addition to the model improvements. The sensitivity study on the abrupt solar radiation change indicates that the increased solar radiation not only strengthens the nonlinear response of SAT,but intensifies the global hydrological cycle. At the same time,the biosphere is also affected obviously.

Zinc finger transcription factor Sp7/Osterix acts on bone formation and regulates col10a1a expression in zebrafish

Sp7/Osterix as a zinc finger transcription factor is expressed specifically in osteoblasts.Embryonic lethality of Sp7 knockout mice,however,has prevented from examining the functions of Sp7 in osteoblast and bone formation in live animals.Here we used TALEN,a versatile genome-editing tool,to generate one zebrafish sp7 mutant line.Homozygous sp7-/- mutant zebrafish are able to survive to adulthood.Alizarin Red staining and Micro-CT analysis showed that sp7-/- larvae and adult fish fail to develop normal opercula,and display curved tail fins and severe craniofacial malformation,while Alcian Blue staining showed no obvious cartilage defects in sp7-/- fish.Quantitative RT-PCR showed that a number of osteoblast markers including spp1,phex,col1 ala,and col1a1 b are significantly down-regulated in sp7-/- fish.Furthermore,col10a1 a,whose ortholog is the cartilage marker in mice,was shown to be a novel downstream gene of Sp7 as an osteoblast marker in zebrafish.Together,these results suggest that Sp7 is required for zebrafish bone development and zebrafish sp7 mutants provide animal models for investigating novel aspects of bone development.

Effects of historical land cover changes on climate

In order to explore the influence of anthropogenic land use on the climate system during the last mil- lennium, a set of experiments is performed with an Earth system model of intermediate complexity—— the McGill Paleoclimate Model (MPM-2). The present paper mainly focuses on biogeophysical effects of historical land cover changes. A dynamic scenario of deforestation is described based on changes in cropland fraction (RF99). The model simulates a decrease in global mean annual temperature in the range of 0.09-0.16℃, especially 0.14-0.22℃ in Northern Hemisphere during the last 300 years. The responses of climate system to GHGs concentration changes are also calculated for comparisons. Now, afforestation is becoming an important choice for the enhancement of terrestrial carbon sequestration and adjustment of regional climate. The results indicate that biogeophysical effects of land cover changes cannot be neglected in the assessments of climate change.

On the determination and simulation of seawater freezing point temperature under high pressure

At present,it is believed that the freezing point temperature of seawater is a function of salinity and pressure,and the freezing point is a key parameter in a coupled air-sea-ice system.Generally,empirical formulas or methods are used to calculate the freezing point of seawater.Especially in high-pressure situations,e.g.,under a thick ice sheet or ice shelf,the pressure term must be taken into account in the determination of seawater freezing point temperature.This study summarized various methods that have been used to calculate seawater freezing point with high pressure.The methods that were employed in two ocean-ice models were also assessed.We identified the disadvantages of these methods used in these two models and addressed the corresponding uncertainties of the freezing point temperature formulas.This study provides useful information on the calculation of the freezing point temperature in numerical modeling and indicates a need to investigate the sensitivity of numerical simulations to the uncertainties in the freezing point temperature in future.

Simultaneous virus identification and characterization of severe unexplained pneumonia cases using a metagenomics sequencing technique

Many viruses can cause respiratory diseases in humans.Although great advances have been achieved in methods of diagnosis,it remains challenging to identify pathogens in unexplained pneumonia(UP) cases.In this study,we applied next-generation sequencing(NGS) technology and a metagenomic approach to detect and characterize respiratory viruses in UP cases from Guizhou Province,China.A total of 33 oropharyngeal swabs were obtained from hospitalized UP patients and subjected to NGS.An unbiased metagenomic analysis pipeline identified 13 virus species in 16 samples.Human rhinovirus C was the virus most frequently detected and was identified in seven samples.Human measles virus,adenovirus B 55 and coxsackievirus A10 were also identified.Metagenomic sequencing also provided virus genomic sequences,which enabled genotype characterization and phylogenetic analysis.For cases of multiple infection,metagenomic sequencing afforded information regarding the quantity of each virus in the sample,which could be used to evaluate each viruses' role in the disease.Our study highlights the potential of metagenomic sequencing for pathogen identification in UP cases.

目的:研究采用冷侧压法、热牙胶垂直加压法以及单尖法对根管治疗患者预后的影响,进一步为临床治疗牙体牙髓病根管治疗的填充选择提供依据。方法:回顾性分析2021年2月—2022年2月中国人民解放军联勤保障部队第九八八医院(焦作院区)收治的140例行根管治疗的患者临床资料。根据根管治疗时填充根管方法的不同分为3组。其中39例患者采用冷侧压法填充根管作为A组;55例患者采用热牙胶垂直加压法填充根管作为B组;46例患者采用单尖法填充根管作为C组。观察3组患者根管填充效果、治疗效果、血清炎症因子以及并发症情况。结果:C组填充效果明显优于A组和B组,差异有统计学意义(χ^(2)=9.540,P0.05);治疗后,C组IL-4水平明显高于A、B组,IL-6和TNF-α水平明显低于A、B组,差异有统计学意义(F=12.770、24.210、6.420,P0.05)。结论:3种根管填充方式治疗牙体牙髓病效果均较好,其中单尖法填充根管能有效缓解牙周炎症反应,填充效果更佳。
