Quantitative analysis of the tribological properties of phosphate glass at the nano- and macro-scales

Processing(grinding,polishing)of phosphate laser(PL)glass involves material removal at two vastly different(spatial)*** this study,the nano‐and macro‐tribological properties of PL glass are investigated by rubbing the glass against a SiO_(2) counter‐surface in both dry and humid *** results indicate that the friction of the PL glass/SiO_(2) pair has opposing trends at the nano‐and *** the nanoscale,the friction coefficient(COF)in humid air is much higher than in dry air,which is attributed to the capillary effect of the absorbed water‐film at the *** the macroscale,on the other hand,the COF in humid air is lower than in dry air,because the water‐related mechanochemical wear makes the worn surface less susceptible to *** removal for PL glass is better facilitated by humid air than by dry air at both scales,because the stress‐enhanced hydrolysis accelerates the material‐removal process in ***,the material‐removal is more sensitive to contact pressure at the macroscale,because stronger mechanical‐interaction occurs during material removal at the macroscale with the multi asperity contact *** the macroscale,the material removal is more sensitive to contact pressure in humid air compared to dry *** almost all mechanical energy is used to remove material in humid air,and most of the mechanical energy is used to produce cracks in PL glass in dry *** results of this study can help optimize the multi‐scale surface processing of optical glasses.

Developing high-efficiency photocatalysts for tetracycline hydrochloride(TCH)degradation is of great sig-nificance to ecosystems and human *** this work,a two-step process of exfoliation and re-stacking was performed to prepare re-stacked HTiNbO_(5) nanosheets(R-HTNS)and then coupled with Ti_(3)C_(2) MXene to construct Ti_(3)C_(2) MXene/R-HTNS(MX/RTS)with a 2D/2D Schottky *** 2D/2D het-erostructures between Ti_(3)C_(2) MXene and R-HTNS can produce an internal electric field and provide max-imum interface area for efficient charge transfer across the intimate *** photocatalytic perfor-mance of samples was evaluated by TCH degradation under simulated *** MX/RTS composites,with an optimal sample of 3-MX/RTS,show enhanced photocatalytic activity for TCH degradation com-pared with *** characterization results reveal that the introduction of Ti_(3)C_(2) MXene can signif-icantly increase specific surface area for providing more reactive sites and broaden the light absorption ***,the incident light energy is absorbed by the Ti_(3)C_(2) MXene component in MX/RTS compos-ites to generate photothermal energy(heat),which facilitates the charge carrier separation and surface reaction ***,the enhanced TCH photodegradation activity for MX/RTS composites is due to the introduction of Ti_(3)C_(2) MXene,which possesses the synergistic effect of the increased specific surface area,improved light-harvesting capacity,2D/2D Schottky heterojunction,and photothermal energy ***,the TCH photodegradation behavior is deliberated with a detailed discussion on various co-existing *** TCH photodegradation,the active radical species are determined for 3-MX/***-cording to the characterization results,the possible TCH photodegradation pathway and mechanism over 3-MX/RTS are *** work may offer a novel insight for constructing MXene-based heterostruc-tured photocatalysts with high efficiency.

Radiation-induced cross-linking:a novel avenue to permanent 3D modification of polymeric membranes

Membrane fouling is always the biggest problem in the practice of membrane separation technologies,which strongly impacts their applicability,separation efficiency,cost effectiveness,and service ***,a simple but effective 3D modification approach was designed for permanently functionalizing polymeric membranes by directly cross-linking polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)under gamma-ray irradiation at room temperature without any *** the modification,a PVA layer was constructed on the membrane surface and the pore inner surface of polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)*** endowed them with good hydrophilicity,low adsorption of protein model foulants,and easy recoverability *** addition,the pore size and distribution were customized by controlling the PVA concentration,which enhanced the rejection ability of the resultant membranes and converted them from microfiltration to *** crosslinked PVA layer was equipped with the resultant membranes with good resistance to chemical cleaning by acidic,alkaline,and oxidative reagents,which could greatly prolong the membrane service ***,this approach was demonstrated as a universal method to modify PVDF membranes with other hydrophilic macromolecular modifiers,including polyethylene glycol,sodium alginate,and polyvinyl *** modification of the membranes effectively endowed them with good hydrophilicity and antifouling properties,as expected.

Enhanced thermoelectric performance of ternary compound Cu_(3)PSe_(4)by defect engineering

The diamond-like compound Cu_(3)PSe_(4)with low lattice thermal conductivity is deemed to be a promising thermoelectric material,which can directly convert waste heat into electricity or vice versa with no moving parts and greenhouse ***,its performance is limited by its low electrical *** this study,we report an effective method to enhance thermoelectric performance of Cu_(3)PSe_(4)by defect *** is found that the carrier concentrations of Cu_(3-x)PSe_(4)(x=0,0.03,0.06,0.09,0.12)compounds are increased by two orders of magnitude as x>0.03,from 1×10^(17)to 1×10^(19)cm^(-3).Combined with the intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivities and enhanced electrical transport performance,a maximum zT value of 0.62 is obtained at 727 K for x=0.12 sample,revealing that Cu defect regulation can be an effective method for enhancing thermoelectric performance of Cu_(3)PSe_(4).

Heterosis is a complex phenomenon in which hybrids show better phenotypic characteristics than their parents *** cabbage(Brassica rapa ***)is a popular leafy crop species,hybrids of which are widely used in commercial production;however,the molecular basis of heterosis for biomass of Chinese cabbage is poorly *** characterized heterosis in a Chinese cabbage hybrid cultivar and its parental lines from the seedling stage to the heading stage;marked heterosis of leaf weight and biomass yield were *** RNA sequencing revealed 63 and 50 differentially expressed microRNAs(DEMs)at the seedling and early-heading stages,*** expression levels ofthe majority of miRNA clusters in the hybrid were lower than the mid-parent values(MPVs).Using degradome sequencing,we identi fied 1,819 miRNA target *** ontology(GO)analyses demonstrated that the target genes ofthe MPV-DEMs and low parental expression level dominance(ELD)miRNAs were signi ficantly enriched in leaf morphogenesis,leaf development,and leaf *** analysis revealed that the expression levels of photosynthesis and chlorophyll synthesis-related MPV-DEGs(differentially expressed genes)were signi ficantly different in the F_(1) hybrid compared to the parental lines,resulting in increased photosynthesis capacity and chlorophyll content in the ***,expression of genes known to regulate leaf development was also observed at the seedling *** plants overexpressing BrGRF4.2 and bra-miR396 presented increased and decreased leaf sizes,*** results provide new insight into the regulation of target genes and miRNA expression patterns in leaf size and heterosis for biomass of ***.

The tumor microenvironment(TME)differs from normal tissue cells in its physiological and biochemical *** construction of TME-responsive nanoplatforms requires a tedious preparation process and complex multicomponent *** this work,Er@EGCG-Cu,a TME-responsive nanoplatform,was simply and rapidly synthesized by combining rare earth-doped nanomaterials(NaLuF_(4):Yb,Er)with EGCG-Cu which is based on the ability of metal ions to coordinate with polyphenols to form a metal-phenolic network(MPN)*** MPN structure is then destroyed under an acidic TME,releasing the chemotherapy(CT)drug EGCG,which can cause apoptosis,Cu_(x)S_(y)is generated by combining Cu^(2+)with H_2S overexpressed in human colorectal cancer cells and can be used for photothermal therapy(PTT).Cell experiments show that laser irradiation improves the CT/PTT synergistic effect of Er@*** study has significance for the construction of TME-responsive nanomedicines with simple and rapid preparation for synergistic therapy.

Effects of Nectar Property on Compensated Dipping Behavior of Honey Bees with Damaged Tongues

In nature,bees with damaged tongues are adapted to have a feat in collecting nectariferous sources in a large spectrum of concentrations(19%-69%)or viscosities(10^(-3)Pa·s to 10^(-1)Pa·s);however,eff ects of nectar property on compensated dipping behavior remain *** the bee tongue anatomy,high-speed videography,and mathematical models,we investigate responses of honey bees with damaged tongues to fluidic sources in various *** find that,bees with 80%damaged tongues are deprived of feeding capability and remarkably,the dipping frequency increases from 4.24 Hz to 5.08 Hz while ingesting 25%sugar water when the tongue loses 0-30%in length,while declines from 5.08 to 3.86 Hz in case of 30%damaged tongue when sucrose concentration increases from 25%to 45%.We employ the energetic compensation rate and energetic utilization rate to evaluate eff ectiveness of the compensation from the perspective of energetic *** mathematical model indicates that the energetic compensation rate turns higher in bees with less damaged tongues for ingesting dilute sugar water,demonstrating its capability of functional compensation for combined ***,the tongue-damaged bees achieve the highest energetic utilization rate when ingesting~30%sugar *** biology,the findings may shed lights on biomimetic materials and technologies that aim to compensate for geometrical degradations without regeneration.

Potential Vorticity Diagnostic Analysis on the Impact of the Easterlies Vortex on the Short-term Movement of the Subtropical Anticyclone over the Western Pacific in the Mei-yu Period

By employing NCEP−NCAR 1°×1°reanalysis datasets,the mechanism of the easterlies vortex(EV)affecting the short-term movement of the subtropical anticyclone over the western Pacific(WPSA)in the mei-yu period is examined using potential vorticity(PV)*** results show that when the EV and the westerlies vortex(WV)travel west/east to the same longitude of 120°E,the WPSA suddenly *** EV and WV manifest as the downward transport of PV in the upper troposphere,and the variation of the corresponding high-value regions of PV significantly reflects the intensity changes of the EV and *** meridional propagation of PV causes the intensity change of the *** vertical movement on both sides of the EV is related to the position of the EV relative to the WPSA and the South Asian high(SAH).When the high PV in the easterlies and westerlies arrive at the same longitude in the meridional direction,the special circulation pattern will lower the position of PV isolines at the ridge line of the ***,the cyclonic circulation at the lower level will be strengthened,causing the abnormally eastward retreat of the *** of the PV equation at the isentropic surface indicates that when the positive PV variation west of the EV intensifies,it connects with the positive PV variation east of the WV,forming a positive PV band and making the WPSA retreat *** horizontal advection of the PV has the greatest *** contribution of the vertical advection of PV and the vertical differential of heating is also positive,but the values are relatively *** contribution of the residual was negative and it becomes smaller before and after the WPSA retreats.
