Investigation of stress-induced progressive failure of mine pillars using a Voronoi grain-based breakable block model

The Voronoi grain-based breakable block model(VGBBM)based on the combined finite-discrete element method(FDEM)was proposed to explicitly characterize the failure mechanism and predict the deformation behavior of hard-rock mine *** influence of the microscopic parameters on the macroscopic mechanical behavior was investigated using laboratory-scale *** field-scale pillar models(width-to-height,W/H=1,2 and 3)were calibrated based on the empirically predicted stress-strain curves of Creighton mine *** results indicated that as the W/H ratios increased,the VGBBM effectively predicted the transition from strain-softening to pseudo-ductile behavior in pillars,and explicitly captured the separated rock slabs and the V-shaped damage zones on both sides of pillars and conjugate shear bands in core zones of *** volumetric strain field revealed significant compressional deformation in core zones of *** the peak strains of W/H=1 and 2 pillars were relatively consistent,there were significant differences in the strain energy storage and release mechanism.W/H was the primary factor influencing the deformation and strain energy in the pillar *** friction coefficient of the structural plane was also an important factor affecting the pillar strength and the weakest discontinuity *** fracture surface was controlled by the discontinuity angle and the friction *** study demonstrated the capability of the VGBBM in predicting the strengths and deformation behavior of hard-rock pillars in deep mine design.

A large-scale fine-grained Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy plate with high strength and ductility was successfully prepared by multi-pass friction stir processing(MFSP)technology in this *** structure of grains and long period stacking ordered(LPSO)phase were characterized,and the mechanical properties uniformity was ***,a quantitative relationship between the microstructure and tensile yield strength was *** results showed that the grains in the processed zone(PZ)and interfacial zone(IZ)were refined from 50μm to 3μm and 4μm,respectively,and numerous original LPSO phases were *** IZ,some block-shaped 18R LPSO phases were transformed into needle-like 14H LPSO phases due to stacking faults and the short-range diffusion of solute *** severe shear deformation in the form of kinetic energy caused profuse stacking fault to be generated and move rapidly,greatly increasing the transformation rate of LPSO *** MFSP,the ultimate tensile strength,yield strength and elongation to failure of the large-scale plate were 367 MPa,305 MPa and 18.0% *** refinement and LPSO phase strengthening were the major strengthening mechanisms for the MFSP *** particularly,the strength of IZ was comparable to that of PZ because the strength contribution of the 14H LPSO phase offsets the lack of grain refinement strengthening in *** result opposes the widely accepted notion that IZ is a weak region in MFSP-prepared large-scale fine-grained plate.

Background Diarrhea is a common complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation(HSCT)and is associated with substantial morbidity,but its etiology is often *** of diarrhea in this population include infectious causes,chemotherapy-or medication-induced mucosal injury and graft-versus-host disease(GVHD).Distinguishing these potential causes of diarrhea is challenging since diarrheal symptoms are often multifactorial,and the etiologies often overlap in transplant *** objectives of this study were to evaluate whether the FilmArray gastrointestinal(GI)panel would increase diagnostic yield and the degree to which pre-transplantation colonization predicts post-transplantation *** From November 2019 to February 2021,a total of 158 patients undergoing HSCT were prospectively included in the *** specimens were obtained from all HSCT recipients prior to conditioning therapy,28±7 days after transplantation and at any new episode of *** stool samples were tested by the FilmArray GI panel and other clinical microbiological *** The primary cause of post-transplantation diarrhea was infection(57/84,67.86%),followed by medication(38/84,45.24%)and GVHD(21/84,25.00%).Ninety-five of 158 patients were colonized with at least one gastrointestinal pathogen before conditioning therapy,and the incidence of infectious diarrhea was significantly higher in colonized patients(47/95,49.47%)than in non-colonized patients(10/63,15.87%)(P<0.001).Fourteen of 19(73.68%)patients who were initially colonized with norovirus pre-transplantation developed a post-transplantation norovirus ***-four of 62(38.71%)patients colonized with Clostridium difficile developed a diarrheal *** addition,FilmArray GI panel testing improved the diagnostic yield by almost twofold in our study(55/92,59.78%vs.30/92,32.61%).Conclusions Our data show that more than half of pediatric patients who were admitted for HSCT were colonized

VMIB (virtual multi-dimensional internal bonds) is a multiscale mechanical model developed from the VIB (virtual internal bond) theory. In VIB theory,the solid mate-rial is considered to consist of random-distributed material particles in microscale. These particles are connected with normal bonds. The macro constitutive relation is derived from the cohesive law between particles. However,in VMIB,the micro particles are connected with both normal and shear bonds. The macro constitutive relation is derived in terms of bond stiffness coefficients. It has been theoretically certified that there exists a corresponding relationship between the two bond stiffness coefficients and the two macro material constants,i.e. the Young’s modulus and Poisson ratio. This corresponding relationship suggests that it should be necessary and sufficient to simultaneously account for the normal and shear interactions between particles. Due to the fact that the fracture criterion is directly incorporated into the constitutive relation,both VIB and VMIB present many advantages in simulating fractures of materials. In the damage model of rock mass,a damage tensor is usually defined to describe the distribution of cracks. The damage value in one direction determines the relative stiffness of rock mass in this direction. In VMIB solid,the relative distribution density of micro bonds in one direction determines the relative macro stiffness of the material in this direction. The effects of the damage value and the relative distribution density of bonds are consistent. To simulate the failure behavior of rock mass with VMIB,the presented paper sets up a quantitative relationship between the damage tensor and the rela-tive distribution density of bonds. Comparison of the theoretical and the experi-mental results shows that VMIB model can represent the effect of distributed cracks on rock mass with this relationship. Enhanced quality of Al2O3/SiC gate stack via microwave plasma annealing
