Persistent mixing bursts in the equatorial Pacific thermocline induced by persistent equatorial waves

A recent study by Liu et al.(2020)suggested that due to the saturation of equatorially trapped planetary waves with different dynamical types,temporal periods,meridional and baroclinic modes,complex layer structures of vertical velocity shear and hence turbulent mixing could frequently occur in the thermocline of the eastern equatorial *** investigated the occurrence of the interior turbulent mixing as indicated by shear instabilities,above the Equatorial Undercurrent(EUC)core at three equatorial sites along 140°W,170°W,and 165°E,respectively,based mainly on data from the Tropical Atmosphere and Ocean(TAO)mooring *** found that turbulent mixing bursts persisted in the thermocline of all three ***,the interior turbulent mixing layers(ITMLs)could occur in probability of approximately 68%,53%,and 48%at the three sites,*** overall occurrence probability shows obvious and similar biannual variations at 140°W and 170°W,which is higher in boreal from late summer to winter and lower in ***,the ITMLs are primarily located above the EUC core and prevail in deeper(shallower)layers from late summer to winter(spring).Most ITMLs(70%)lasted for hours to 3 days,and a few of them(15%)for more than 7 *** thicknesses of ITMLs were concentrated between 15 and 55 *** 165°E,the vertical distribution of ITML occurrence probability was different from that at 140°W and 170°W,as it did not show a preference for depths;the durations of ITMLs are short(also from hours to several days)and their thicknesses were between 5 and 25 *** properties,particularly the high occurrence probability,and short durations demonstrated the persistence of thermocline mixing in the western to eastern equatorial Pacific thermocline and confirmed the generation mechanism by persistent equatorial waves as well.

Transformation optics(TO) provides an unprecedented technique to control electromagnetic(EM) waves by engineering the constitutive parameters of the surrounding medium through a proper spatial transformation. In general, ideal transformation optical devices require simultaneous electric and magnetic responses along all three dimensions. To ease the practical implementation, previous studies usually made use of reduced parameters or other simplified approaches, which inevitably introduce extra reflection or unwanted phase shift. Up to today, experimental realizations of full-parameter transformation optical devices in free space are still quite limited. Here, a general design strategy is proposed to solve this *** a specific example, a full-parameter spatial-compression TO medium with constitutive parameters taking the diagonal form diag(a, a, 1/a) for the TM wave incidence was designed and realized experimentally. Such spatial-compression TO media were then applied to the implementation of an ideal omnidirectional invisibility cloak capable of concealing a large-scale object over a wide range of illumination angles. Both the simulation and experiment confirm that the cloak allows for nearly unity transmission of EM waves in the forward direction without introducing extra scattering or phase shift. This work constitutes an important stepping stone for future practical implementation of arbitrary full-parameter omnidirectional transformation optical devices.

Isotopic separation is of paramount importance for producing high-purity heavy hydrogen,yet the process remains hugely ***,we report on an Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite that was able to efficiently separate deuterium from protium via chemical quantum *** data showed that four types of Fe species were present in Fe/ZSM-5 and oligomeric Fe-O clusters in the zeolite pores were correlated directly with gas *** adsorption revealed that Fe-O species served as the main adsorption sites and interacted with D_(2) more strongly than with H_(2).D_(2)/H_(2)separation was exemplified using thermal desorption spectroscopy.D_(2)/H_(2) selectivity increased with Fe loading in Fe/ZSM-5 and a selectivity of 32.1 was obtained with an optimal loading of 7 wt%.The shift of desorption temperature supports the chemical affinity-based quantum sieving of D_(2)over H_(2).This study demonstrates an effective strategy for enhancing D_(2)/H_(2) separation and the high selectivity means that Fe/ZSM-5 has strong potential in hydrogen isotope separation.

Cognitive impairment associated with individual and joint exposure to PM2.5 constituents in a Chinese national cohort

Nationwide longitudinal evidence linking cognitive decline with exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) constituents remains scarce in China. By constructing a dynamic cohort based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, we aimed to assess individual and joint associations of PM2.5 constituents with cognitive function among middle-aged and older adults in China. Linear mixed-effects models incorporated with quantile-based g-computation were applied to investigate individual and joint associations of long-term exposures to PM2.5 constituents with cognitive function. Among 13,507 respondents, we evaluated 38,950 follow-up records of cognitive function tests. Declines in global cognitive score associated with an interquartile range (IQR) increase in exposure were -1.477 (95% CI: -1.722, -1.232) for nitrate, followed by -1.331 (-1.529, -1.133) for ammonium, -1.033 (-1.184, -0.883) for sulfate, -0.988 (-1.144, -0.832) for organic matter and -0.822 (-0.946, -0.699) for black carbon. An IQR-equivalent increase in joint exposure to these PM2.5 constituents was associated with a decline of -1.353 (-1.659, -1.048) in global cognitive score. Female, younger, and well-educated individuals were at greater vulnerability to cognitive impairment related to individual and joint exposure to PM2.5 constituents. This study suggested that later-life exposures to PM2.5 constituents were associated with cognitive decline in middle-aged and older adults in China.

The Distribution of Surnames in Xiantao City through Isonymy

The population migration in Hubei Province was frequent in history, accompanied by the migration of surnames,so it is important to study their population surnames. We take Xiantao City as an example to explore the isonymic structure of small and medium-sized cities in Hubei. The surname distributions of 223 327 residents registered in 2013 were analyzed in 5 towns and 105 villages of Xiantao. The number of different surnames found was *** for surnames, the α-value reflects the influence of ethnic composition on the abundance of surnames. The correlation between the isonymic distance and the geographic distance between villages was calculated and indicated that Euclidean distance was weakly correlated with the geographic distance(r =0.177± 0.012), and the isonymic distance increased with the geographical distance. Furthermore, the dendrogram and PCA built from the matrix of Euclidean distances between villages identified a main surname differentiation between the urban and rural areas.
