AIM： To investigate whether Thyl recognizes oval cells in the fetal liver and to characterize the cultured Thy1 selected cells from E14 rat livers. METHODS： Thyl populations were analyzed by fluorescence activated cell sorter analysis. Thyl positive cells were isolated using magnetic beads. Hepatic markers were detected by Western blotting, immunocytochemistry and RT-PCR. RESULTS： The percentage of Thyl-positive cells decreased during early development of fetal rat liver （E13-E16）. E14 fetal livers contained 7.8% Thy1 positive cells, of which 61% were positive for α-fetoprotein （AFP） and 25% expressed albumin. The Thy1＋ population expressed oval cell markers c-Kit and CXCR4, liver enriched-transcription factors HNF1α and HNF6, hepatocytic markers albumin, AFP and cytokeratin 18, and biliary marker cytokeratin 19. Thy1- selected cells formed only mesenchymal colonies when plated on collagen and in serum-containing media. Thyl selected cells were able to form hepatic colonies positive for HNF1α, HNF6, albumin, AFP, cytokeratin 18, cytokeratin 19 and glycogen, when grown on STO feeder layers in serum free-media. CONCLUSION： Oval cells positive for Thyl are present in early liver embryonic stages.

There is substantial public concern about the health risks of proximity to petrochemical *** the Haifa Bay Area(HBA),which contains Israel’s densest industrial area,these concerns have been strengthened by elevated cancer mortality rates since the late *** studied the association between adolescent exposure to industrial air pollution in the HBA and adult-onset *** is a historical cohort *** study population comprised 2,187,317 subjects,using the Israeli medical corps data linked to the Israel National Cancer Registry with follow-up of up to 45 *** assessments were estimated by a spatial kriging interpolation model of SO2,serving as a marker for the dispersion of air pollution emitted from the complex during the study *** found increased crude(HR=1.23,95%CI=1.17 to 1.29)and adjusted(HR=1.16,95%CI=1.10 to 1.21)risk of cancer with increased exposure to air pollution in *** associations remained robust in analyses stratified by decade and socio-economic *** found evidence of monotonically increased risk in five of 13 cancer categories(leukemia,melanoma,female breast,central nervous system,and thyroid tumors).Our findings strengthen the hypothesis that this exposure posed a carcinogenic risk during the study period.

Is it possible that a measurement of a spin component of a spin-1/2 particle yields the value 100?In 1988 Aharonov,Albert and Vaidman argued that upon pre-and postselection of particular spin states,weakening the coupling of a standard measurement procedure ensures this paradoxical *** theoretical prediction,called weak value,was realised in numerous experiments2-9,but its meaning remains very controversialsince its"anomalous"nature,i.e.z the possibility to exceed the eigenvalue spectrum,as well as its"quantumness"are *** address these questions by presenting the first experiment measuring anomalous weak values with just a single click,without the need for statistical *** measurement uncertainty is significantly smaller than the gap between the measured weak value and the nearest *** clarifying the meaning of weak values,demonstrating their non-statistical,single-particle nature,this result represents a breakthrough in understanding the foundations of quantum measurement,showing unprecedented measurement capability for further applications of weak values to quantum photonics.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence of short-term outcomes of low birth weig ht infants (≤1,750 g) exposed prenattally to either dexamethasone or betamethaso ne. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a cohort comprising 550 infants who wer e born alive at our center during the period January 1999 through December 2001, who weighed 1,750 g or less at birth, and who were exposed to prenatal steroid treatment. We compared brain ultrasound findings, such as intraventricular hemor rhage and cystic periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), as well as other clinical f indings, including respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), necrotizing enterocoliti s, retinopathy of prematurity, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, for all premature infants whose mothers received either dexamethasone (from January 1, 1999 to Ju ne 30, 2000, n = 263) or beta-methasone (July 1, 2000 to December 31, 2001, n = 287). RESULTS: Patient characteristics (mothers and infants) were the same in b oth groups, with the exception of the number of steroid courses administered, th e number of women with premature rupture of membranes (defined as >24 hours), an d the number of women who had received tocolysis. No significant difference was found between the 2 groups with respect to intraventricular hemorrhage and cysti c PVL frequencies. No significant differences were found in the incidence of sho rt-term outcomes examined, despite the fact that the dexamethasone group was ex posed to a statistically significantly greater number of courses than the betame thasone group. CONCLUSION: There seem to be no advantages to maternal antenatal treatment with betamethasone compared with dexamethasone in reducing the risk of PVL in low birth weight (≤1,750 g) infants. Both drugs have the same effect on all short-term outcome parameters checked.
