Cartilage Wear in Healthy and Osteoarthritis Joints

This study is designed to determine whether the outermost layer of articular cartilage is deficient in Osteoarthritis (OA). Phospholipids present in healthy and osteoarthritis (OA) synovial fluid show significant differences in their concentration. While examining the surface properties of OA joints, we found that OA PLs molecules cannot support lubrication, and increased friction was observed. Our lubrication mechanism was based on a surface active phospholipids (SAPL) multibilayer which in OA condition was deactivated and removed from the cartilage surface under OA conditions. Cartilage wettability study clearly demonstrated a significant decrease in hydrophobicity, the contact angle, θ (theta), dropping from 103° from bovine healthy cartilage to 65° in surface partially depleted and 35.1° for completely depleted surface. These results are discussed in the context that surface active phospholipid (SAPL) and lubricin, each has specific roles in a lamellar-repulsive lubrication system. However, deactivated phospholipid molecules are major indicator of cartilage wear (model) introduced in this study.

This paper reviews the current state in the application of infrared methods, particularly mid-infrared (mid-IR) and near infrared (NIR), for the evaluation of the structural and functional integrity of articular cartilage. It is noted that while a considerable amount of research has been conducted with respect to tissue characterization using mid-IR, it is almost certain that full-thickness cartilage assessment is not feasible with this method. On the contrary, the relatively more considerable penetration capacity of NIR suggests that it is a suitable candidate for full-thickness cartilage evaluation. Nevertheless, significant research is still required to improve the specificity and clinical applicability of the method if we are going to be able to use it for distinguishing between functional and dysfunctional cartilage.

This narrative review provides an overview of the utilization of endoscopic ultrasound-guided gallbladder drainage(EUS-GBD)as a salvage approach in cases of unsuccessful conventional ***-GBD is a minimally invasive and effective technique for drainage in patients with acute cholecystitis with high risk of *** procedure has demonstrated impressive technical and clinical success rates with low rates of adverse events,making it a safe and effective option for appropriate ***,EUS-GBD can also serve as a rescue option for patients who have failed endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography or EUS biliary drainage for relief of jaundice in malignant biliary ***,patient selection is critical for the success of EUS-GBD,and proper patient selection and risk assessment are important to ensure the safety and efficacy of the *** the field continues to evolve and mature,ongoing research will further refine our understanding of the benefits and limitations of EUS-GBD,ultimately leading to improved outcomes for patients.

The gallbladder(GB)is a susceptible organ,prone to various pathologies that can be identified using different imaging *** ultrasound(TUS)is typically the initial diagnostic method due to its numerous well-established ***,in cases of uncertainty or when a definitive diagnosis cannot be established,computed tomography(CT)or magnetic resonance imaging may be employed to provide more detailed ***,CT scans may sometimes offer inadequate spatial resolution,which can limit the differentiation of GB lesions,particularly when smaller yet clinically relevant abnormalities are ***,endoscopic ultrasound(EUS)provides higher frequency compared to TUS,superior spatial resolution,and the option for contrast-enhanced harmonic imaging,enabling a more comprehensive ***,EUS can serve as a supplementary tool when conventional imaging methods are *** review will describe the standard EUS examination of the GB,focusing on its endosonographic characteristics in various GB path-ologies.

Differential heat of absorption of CO_2 in aqueous solutions of N,N-diethylethanolamine(DEEA) and activated DEEA solutions up to a total concentration of 2 mol·L^(-1) was measured as a function of CO_2 loading at 313.15 K using a reaction calorimeter. In order to analyze the performance of N-methyl-1,3-propanediamine(MAPA)as an activator, DEEA blended solutions containing 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 mol·L^(-1) MAPA were studied. The heat of CO_2 absorption in single DEEA solutions was unaffected by changing the DEEA concentration in the range of(0.5–2) mol·L^(-1). On the other hand, increasing the concentration of MAPA in aqueous amine mixtures of(DEEA + MAPA) raised the heat of absorption.

Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome(INS)describes a group of rare glomerular diseases characterized by massive proteinuria and hypoalbuminemia in the absence of glomerular inflammatory lesions or immunoglobulin *** includes two main entities based on kidney biopsy findings:minimal-change nephrotic syndrome(MCNS)and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis(FSGS).The treatment of INS relies on steroids and/or immunosuppressive drugs(calcineurin inhibitors,cyclophosphamide,mycophenolate mofetil,and rituximab).

The focus of this paper is on determination of the dynamic parameters of structural systems with viscoelastic (VE) dampers described by Maxwell rheological models. Such parameters could be obtained after solving the appropriately defined nonlinear eigenvalue problem for frames with VE dampers. The solution to the nonlinear eigenvalue problem is obtained by equating to zero the determinant of the considered system of equations. Apart from complex conjugate eigenvalues, the real ones occurred when dampers that are described by the classic Maxwell model, are also determined.

Phospholipids (PLs) in the form of nanostructures are widely employed as a lubricant and antimicrobial agent. The cartilage (AC) surface was characterized using wettability test fresh and depleted AC samples. Cartilage wet surface exposure to air causes increase in surface wettability from 0 to 104 degrees. Effect is explained by flip-flop of the PLs molecules in membrane. The hydrophilic and hydrophobic character of cartilage was determined. Microscopic image of PLs bilayers adsorbed on the surface of pleural tissues and human stomach will be compared with cartilage tissue.
