Selective metal leaching from technosols based on synthetic root exudate composition

This study focused on metal release from technosols induced by synthetic root exudate(SRE).The effect of SRE composition on metal release was studied using six *** was done by treating the technosols with SRE solutions having varying concentrations of low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs),namely oxalic,citric,and malic ***,the physico-chemical parameters (p H and electric conductivity),Ca,Mg,Fe,Zn,and Cu release (by atomic absorption spectroscopy,AAS),chemical changes (by Fourier transform infrared,FT-IR),and organic parameters (by fluorescence) were *** release showed to be dependent on the SRE composition and technosol *** acid selectively released Ca,Mg,Zn,and Cu from technosols in a concentration-dependent manner;oxalic acid showed a significant role in the release of Mg and *** relatively high LMWOA concentrations,particulate organo-mineral complexes ***,technosol weathering was seen by the dissolution of humic substances and ferriallophanes,which in turn caused metal ***,re-precipitation of these phases showed to re-sorb metals,thus underestimating the role of LMWOAs in metal ***,the selective metal leaching was highly dependent on the SRE composition and LMWOA concentrations on one hand,and on the mineral,organic,and organo-mineral components of the technosols on the *** understanding of such processes is crucial for proposing and implementing environmental management strategies to reduce metal leaching or for the beneficial re-usage of metals (e.g.,for agromining) from technosols.

Surface Water Processes in Coping with Anthropogenic Impact in a Coastal Eastern Mediterranean Region

Rivers are progressively being exposed to increased anthropogenic pollution stresses that are undermining their designated uses and affecting sensitive coastal areas. In this study, three adjacent eastern Mediterranean coastal rivers, Ibrahim, Kaleb and Beirut, were evaluated. Water quality samples were collected in dry and wet seasons from different sampling sites along the river from the source to the outlet which represent a gradient of increased urbanization. The spatiotemporal variability of the physio-chemical properties, heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, and Cd) and organic matter (DOC) were statistically analyzed to better understand the contribution of point and nonpoint pollution sources. The three rivers (Beirut, Kaleb and Ibrahim) show a similar behavior in calcium and carbonate alkalinity due to the carbonate mineral weathering effect, so they are of calcium bicarbonate type due to their calcareous geological nature. The speciation of anions was affected by temporal variation. Moreover, it is obvious that the Beirut River has a different behavioral characteristic where the water is a sulfate type water with a preferable metal-OM complexation mainly with lead, zinc and copper, whereas Kaleb and Ibrahim are considered to be of a nitrate phosphate type with a preferable metal inorganic complexation, especially copper, that has a consistent behavior in both types of waters. This difference is attributed to the urbanization effect highly impacting the Beirut River.

Dissolved Organic Matter Features of Three Adjacent Eastern Mediterranean Urbanized Watersheds

Landscape urbanization broadly affects ecosystems in coastal watersheds, but, until now, the influence of nonpoint source urban inputs on dissolved organic matter (DOM) amount, composition, and source is poorly understood. To understand how DOM composition varied with urbanization, fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) were determined for urban and non-urban waters from upstream to downstream sites along three adjacent coastal watersheds that flow into the Mediterranean Sea. Two humic DOM fluorescent components (humic-like and fulvic-like peaks) and two proteinic components (tyrosine-like and tryptophane-like peaks) were identified by EEM fluorescence. The results indicated that urbanization had an important influence on DOM concentration and composition, with urban waters having a high degree of DOM variation due to different land uses surrounding each body of water. Urban waters show a higher DOM fluorescence index (FI), the highest fluorescence intensity of protein-like manifested also by BIX values, and a lower value of the humification index (HIX) than non-urban waters which were dominated by allochthonous inputs. In addition, the EEM was compared in dry and wet season where higher DOM amounts and FI appeared in summer due to autochthonous production coming from algae growth compared to allochthonous input from rainfall dominated in wet season. The concentration of DOC increased from upstream to downstream for the three rivers, especially Beirut River. The increase in DOC values was observed in both dry and wet seasons by 39 and 19 times respectively compared to upstream (0.93 - 0.91 mgC/L).

EMSC:a joint multicast routing,scheduling,and call admission control in multi-radio multi-channel WMNs

This paper deals with the problem of joint multicast routing,scheduling,and call admission control in multiradio multi-channel wireless mesh *** heuristically solve this problem,we propose a cross-layer algorithm named“extended MIMCR with scheduling and call admission control phases(EMSC)”.Our model relies on the on-demand quality of service(QoS)multicast sessions,where each admitted session creates a unique tree with a required *** proposed scheme extends the MIMCR algorithm to fairly schedule multiple non-interfering transmissions in the same time *** also exploits a call admission control mechanism to protect the QoS requirements of the multicast *** reduces the number of occupied time slots,with consideration of spatial reuse,both Intra-flow and Inter-flow interferences,and selecting the minimum-interference minimum-cost *** subsequently leads to better radio resource utilization and increases the network *** results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the other algorithms and improves the network performance.

Hyaluronic acid algorithm-based models for assessment of liver fibrosis： translation from basic science to clinical application

BACKGROUND： The estimation of liver fibrosis is usually dependent on liver biopsy evaluation. Because of its disadvantages and side effects, researchers try to find non-invasive methods for the assessment of liver injuries. Hyaluronic acid has been proposed as an index for scoring the severity of fibrosis, alone or in algorithm models. The algorithm model in which hyaluronic acid was used as a major constituent was more reliable and accurate in diagnosis than hyaluronic acid alone. This review described various hyaluronic acid algorithm-based models for assessing liver *** SOURCE： A Pub Med database search was performed to identify the articles relevant to hyaluronic acid algorithmbased models for estimating liver ***： The use of hyaluronic acid in an algorithm model is an extra and valuable tool for assessing liver ***： Although hyaluronic acid algorithm-based models have good diagnostic power in liver fibrosis assessment, they cannot render the need for liver biopsy obsolete and it is better to use them in parallel with liver biopsy. They can be used when frequent liver biopsy is not possible in situations such as highlighting the efficacy of treatment protocol for liver fibrosis.

Shielding and corrosion properties of the Alloy 709 as canister material for spent nuclear fuel dry casks

The shielding and corrosion properties of the Alloy 709 advanced austenitic stainless steel have been investigated as a candidate canister material in spent fuel dry *** results revealed that the experimental and computational data of the linear and mass attenuation coefficients of the alloy are in good agreement,in which the attenuation coefficient values decreased with increasing photon *** 709 was shown to exhibit the highest linear attenuation coefficient against gamma rays when compared to 304 and 316 stainless *** the other hand,Alloy 709 exhibited no considerable weight change over a 69-day period in circulating salt brines corrosion testing,while it showed an exponential increase of corrosion current density with temperature in acidic and basic corrosive solutions during electrochemical polarization corrosion ***,Alloy 709 was the least corroded steel compared to other austenitic stainless steels in both acidic and basic *** optimistic results of the shielding and corrosion properties of Alloy 709 due to its chemical composition,suggest utilizing it as a canister material in spent nuclear fuel dry casks.

An overview of occult hepatitis B virus infection

Occult hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection (OBI), alternatively defined as occult hepatitis B (OHB), is a challenging clinical entity. It is recognized by two main characteristics: absence of HBsAg, and low viral replication. The previous two decades have witnessed a remarkable progress in our understanding of OBI and its clinical implications. Appropriate diagnostic techniques must be adopted. Sensitive HBV DNA amplification assay is the gold standard assay for detection of OBI. Viral as well as host factors are implicated in the pathogenesis of OBI. However, published data reporting the infectivity of OBI by transfusion are limited. Several aspects including OBI transmission, infectivity and its relation to the development of chronic liver diseases and hepatocellular carcinoma have to be resolved. The aim of the present review is to highlight recent data on OBI with a focus on its virological diagnosis and clinical outcome.

Magnetic polyacrylonitrile/ZIF-8/Fe_(3)O_(4) nanocomposite bead as an efficient iodine adsorbent and antibacterial agent

The efficient adsorption of radioactive iodine(^(129)I and^(131)I)as nuclear waste is of great *** nanocomposites consist of metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)developing for various pollutions sorption and separation have attracted much *** study reports the fabrication of magnetic polyacrylonitrile(PAN)/zeolitic imidazolate frameworks(ZIF-8)nanocomposites,PAN/ZIF-8(x%)/Fe_(3)O_(4),x=30 and 50,as iodine capture *** PAN/ZIF-8(x%)/Fe_(3)O_(4)nanocomposite beads were fabricated via the phase inversion method,and their potential for iodine capture and separation in solution and vapor was investigated through UV-vis and weighing methods,***,antibacterial activity of the as-prepared beads was assessed against *** and *** as-fabricated compounds were studied by various techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared,X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscope,energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping,transmission electron microscope,N_(2)adsorption isotherm,and vibrating sample *** iodine capture results showed that the efficiency of nanocomposites is remarkably higher than the pure PAN ***,the asprepared nanocomposite adsorbents displayed higher capture capacities for iodine vapor(1524-4345mg·g^(-1))than iodine solution(187-295 mg·g^(-1)).The as-obtained magnetic nanocomposites can be successfully separated from polluted media by simple filtration or an external magnet,regenerated through washing with ethanol,and *** capturing,high sorption capacity,rapid separation,and good reusability make the PAN/ZIF-8(x%)/Fe_(3)O_(4)nanocomposites highly effective adsorbents for the separation of iodine from ***,PAN/ZIF-8(50%)/Fe_(3)O_(4)bead can be considered as a potential new antibacterial agent for water and wastewater treatment.

Evolutionary algorithm for optimization of multilayer coatings

In this paper, a new evolutionary algorithm, the well-known imperialist competition algorithm, is proposed for optimizing the optical thin-films. In this method, the process is modeled of the competition between countries as imperialists and their colonizing of others as colonies. This algorithm could be an appropriate alternative to some of the more popular algorithms for optimizing the optical thin-films for good performance. The polarizer and edge filter for example are designed by using the imperialist competition algorithm method and the results are compared with those from two optimization high-performance methods： the genetic algorithm and differential evolutionary algorithm. Based on these results,the performance of the imperialist competition algorithm method shows that this algorithm is not sensitive to the change of its parameters and it can be an important advantage for quickly achieving a global optimal point. On the other hand the results show a better ratio of P-polarization transmittance to S-polarization transmittance in the design of a 1540-nm polarizer, which is more appropriate than the results from the other two methods. In the second design, an edge filter with a lower number of layers and more uniform bandpass spectrum than the counterparts of those methods is obtained. These results indicate that the imperialist competition algorithm is a robust method for optical thin-film designs.

Phase-controlled atom-photon entanglement in a three-level Λ-type closed-loop atomic system

We study the entanglement of dressed atom and its spontaneous emission in a three-level A-type closed-loop atomic system in a multi-photon resonance condition and beyond it. It is shown that the von Neumann entropy in such a system is phase-dependent, and it can be controlled by either the intensity or relative phase of applied fields. It is demonstrated that for the special case of the Rabi frequency of applied fields, the system is disentangled. In addition, we take into account the effect of Doppler broadening on the entanglement and it is found that a suitable choice of laser propagation direction allows us to obtain the steady state degree of entanglement （DEM） even in the presence of the Doppler effect.
