Feasibility and reliability of the revised Edmonton Symptom Assessment System(ESAS-r)in Egyptian patients with advanced cancer:A single institutional experience

Objective This study aims to test the acceptance, feasibility, and usefulness of the Arabic version of the revised Edmonton Symptom AssesSment System （ESAS-r） among Egyptian patients with advanced cancer and to compare the rates of symptoms documented by patients and physicians. methods Between August 2014 and February 2015, a total of 140 patients at Ain Shams University Hospitals in Cairo, Egypt received the Arabic version of the ESAS-r. For each patient, the ESAS-r was completed twice, first by the treating physician （as part of the basic assessment） and a second time by the patient, with a maximum of 2 hours between the two assessments. An additional survey was included to assess patients＇ acceptance of the survey and their preferences. Results Out of 140 enrolled patients in the study, 11 patients refused to complete the questionnaire, and 10 patients were excluded due to incomplete records in their medical records. Complete data was retrieved for 119 patients who were included for further analyses. The 78 （65%） patients declared that the test was clear and easy to complete. They were able to answer the test without help. Collectively, tiredness and sense of well-being were the most commonly encountered symptoms in ratings obtained by both patients and physicians. Tiredness was the only symptom showing a significant difference between the two rating methods, patient-rated scores being higher （P = 0.032）. Cronbach＇s alpha showed that both tests com- pleted by the physician and the patients were internally consistent： the physician-rated test had a coefficient of 0.877, and the patient-rated test had a coefficient of 0.863. All ESAS scores had good internal consis- tency, with a Cmnbach＇s alpha coefficient of 0.88. The internal consistency remained high after removal of individual symptom scores, with Cronbach＇s alpha coefficients ranging from 0.823 to 0.902, indicating that no individual question had undue influence on the total ESAS score. EmSC:a joint multicast routing,scheduling,and call admission control in multi-radio multi-channel WmNs

This paper deals with the problem of joint multicast routing,scheduling,and call admission control in multiradio multi-channel wireless mesh *** heuristically solve this problem,we propose a cross-layer algorithm named“extended mImCR with scheduling and call admission control phases(EmSC)”.Our model relies on the on-demand quality of service(QoS)multicast sessions,where each admitted session creates a unique tree with a required *** proposed scheme extends the mImCR algorithm to fairly schedule multiple non-interfering transmissions in the same time *** also exploits a call admission control mechanism to protect the QoS requirements of the multicast *** reduces the number of occupied time slots,with consideration of spatial reuse,both Intra-flow and Inter-flow interferences,and selecting the minimum-interference minimum-cost *** subsequently leads to better radio resource utilization and increases the network *** results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the other algorithms and improves the network performance.

Amoxicillin–clavulanic acid induced sperm abnormalities and histopathological changes in mice

Objective: To explore the genotoxic potential and histopathological changes induced in liver, kidney, testis, brain and heart after using the antibiotic drug amoxicillin/clavulanic acid(4:1).methods: The study included chromosomal aberration analysis in bone-marrow and mouse spermatocytes, induction of sperm morphological abnormalities and histopathological changes in different body organs. The drug was administrated orally at a dose of81 mg/kg body weight twice daily(Total = 162 mg/kg/day) for various periods of time equivalent to 625 mg/men(twice daily).Results: The results revealed non-significant chromosomal aberrations induced after treatment with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid(AC) in both bone marrow and mouse spermatocytes after 7 and 10 days treatment. On the other hand, statistically significant percentages of sperm morphological abnormalities were recorded. Such percentage reached 8.10 ± 0.55, 9.86 ± 0.63 and 12.12 ± 0.58 at the three time intervals tested(7, 14 and 35 days after the 1 st treatment respectively)(treatment performed for 5 successive days) compared with 2.78 ± 0.48 for the control. The results also revealed histopathological changes in different body organs after AC treatment which increased with the prolongation of the period of therapy. Congestion of central vain, liver hemorrhage and hydropic changes in hepatocytes were noticed in the liver. Degenerative changes were found in kidney glomerulus and tubules while testis showed atrophy of seminiferous tubules, and reduction of spermatogenesis. AC also induced neurotoxicity and altered brain neurotransmitter levels. Hemorrhage in the myocardium, disruption of cardiac muscle fibers and pyknotic nuclei in cardiomyocytes were recorded as side effects of AC in heart ***: The results concluded that AC treatment induced sperm morphological abnormalities and histopathological changes in different body organs. Clinicians must be aware of such results while describing the drug.

BACKGROUND： The estimation of liver fibrosis is usually dependent on liver biopsy evaluation. Because of its disadvantages and side effects, researchers try to find non-invasive methods for the assessment of liver injuries. Hyaluronic acid has been proposed as an index for scoring the severity of fibrosis, alone or in algorithm models. The algorithm model in which hyaluronic acid was used as a major constituent was more reliable and accurate in diagnosis than hyaluronic acid alone. This review described various hyaluronic acid algorithm-based models for assessing liver *** SOURCE： A Pub med database search was performed to identify the articles relevant to hyaluronic acid algorithmbased models for estimating liver ***： The use of hyaluronic acid in an algorithm model is an extra and valuable tool for assessing liver ***： Although hyaluronic acid algorithm-based models have good diagnostic power in liver fibrosis assessment, they cannot render the need for liver biopsy obsolete and it is better to use them in parallel with liver biopsy. They can be used when frequent liver biopsy is not possible in situations such as highlighting the efficacy of treatment protocol for liver fibrosis.

Shielding and corrosion properties of the Alloy 709 as canister material for spent nuclear fuel dry casks

The shielding and corrosion properties of the Alloy 709 advanced austenitic stainless steel have been investigated as a candidate canister material in spent fuel dry *** results revealed that the experimental and computational data of the linear and mass attenuation coefficients of the alloy are in good agreement,in which the attenuation coefficient values decreased with increasing photon *** 709 was shown to exhibit the highest linear attenuation coefficient against gamma rays when compared to 304 and 316 stainless *** the other hand,Alloy 709 exhibited no considerable weight change over a 69-day period in circulating salt brines corrosion testing,while it showed an exponential increase of corrosion current density with temperature in acidic and basic corrosive solutions during electrochemical polarization corrosion ***,Alloy 709 was the least corroded steel compared to other austenitic stainless steels in both acidic and basic *** optimistic results of the shielding and corrosion properties of Alloy 709 due to its chemical composition,suggest utilizing it as a canister material in spent nuclear fuel dry casks.

magnetic polyacrylonitrile/ZIF-8/Fe_(3)O_(4) nanocomposite bead as an efficient iodine adsorbent and antibacterial agent

The efficient adsorption of radioactive iodine(^(129)I and^(131)I)as nuclear waste is of great *** nanocomposites consist of metal-organic frameworks(mOFs)developing for various pollutions sorption and separation have attracted much *** study reports the fabrication of magnetic polyacrylonitrile(PAN)/zeolitic imidazolate frameworks(ZIF-8)nanocomposites,PAN/ZIF-8(x%)/Fe_(3)O_(4),x=30 and 50,as iodine capture *** PAN/ZIF-8(x%)/Fe_(3)O_(4)nanocomposite beads were fabricated via the phase inversion method,and their potential for iodine capture and separation in solution and vapor was investigated through UV-vis and weighing methods,***,antibacterial activity of the as-prepared beads was assessed against *** and *** as-fabricated compounds were studied by various techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared,X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscope,energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping,transmission electron microscope,N_(2)adsorption isotherm,and vibrating sample *** iodine capture results showed that the efficiency of nanocomposites is remarkably higher than the pure PAN ***,the asprepared nanocomposite adsorbents displayed higher capture capacities for iodine vapor(1524-4345mg·g^(-1))than iodine solution(187-295 mg·g^(-1)).The as-obtained magnetic nanocomposites can be successfully separated from polluted media by simple filtration or an external magnet,regenerated through washing with ethanol,and *** capturing,high sorption capacity,rapid separation,and good reusability make the PAN/ZIF-8(x%)/Fe_(3)O_(4)nanocomposites highly effective adsorbents for the separation of iodine from ***,PAN/ZIF-8(50%)/Fe_(3)O_(4)bead can be considered as a potential new antibacterial agent for water and wastewater treatment.

Evolutionary algorithm for optimization of multilayer coatings

In this paper, a new evolutionary algorithm, the well-known imperialist competition algorithm, is proposed for optimizing the optical thin-films. In this method, the process is modeled of the competition between countries as imperialists and their colonizing of others as colonies. This algorithm could be an appropriate alternative to some of the more popular algorithms for optimizing the optical thin-films for good performance. The polarizer and edge filter for example are designed by using the imperialist competition algorithm method and the results are compared with those from two optimization high-performance methods： the genetic algorithm and differential evolutionary algorithm. Based on these results,the performance of the imperialist competition algorithm method shows that this algorithm is not sensitive to the change of its parameters and it can be an important advantage for quickly achieving a global optimal point. On the other hand the results show a better ratio of P-polarization transmittance to S-polarization transmittance in the design of a 1540-nm polarizer, which is more appropriate than the results from the other two methods. In the second design, an edge filter with a lower number of layers and more uniform bandpass spectrum than the counterparts of those methods is obtained. These results indicate that the imperialist competition algorithm is a robust method for optical thin-film designs.

A convenient one-step preparation of diaminonitrile compounds

A new method for preparation of diaminonitrile compounds is reported. In this method primary aliphatic diamine compounds were condensed with two equivalents of benzaldehyde and sodium cyanide in presence of an aqueous solution of sodium hydrogensulfite under mild conditions. This method provides an efficient, convenient and practical method for the syntheses of diaminonitrile compounds and the products are easily isolated. The prepared new compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NmR spectroscopies and mass spectrometry.

Phase-controlled atom-photon entanglement in a three-level Λ-type closed-loop atomic system

We study the entanglement of dressed atom and its spontaneous emission in a three-level A-type closed-loop atomic system in a multi-photon resonance condition and beyond it. It is shown that the von Neumann entropy in such a system is phase-dependent, and it can be controlled by either the intensity or relative phase of applied fields. It is demonstrated that for the special case of the Rabi frequency of applied fields, the system is disentangled. In addition, we take into account the effect of Doppler broadening on the entanglement and it is found that a suitable choice of laser propagation direction allows us to obtain the steady state degree of entanglement （DEm） even in the presence of the Doppler effect.
