Vitamin D supplementation improves sustained virologic response in chronic hepatitis C (genotype 1)-nave patients

AIm: To determine whether adding vitamin D, a potent immunomodulator, improves the hepatitis C virus (HCV) response to antiviral therapy. mETHODS: Seventy-two consecutive patients with chronic HCV genotype 1 were randomized into two groups: the treatment group (n = 36, 50% male, mean age 47 ± 11 years) received Peg-α-2b interferon (1.5 μg/kg per week) plus ribavirin (1000-1200 mg/d) together with vitamin D3 (2000 IU/d, target serum level > 32 ng/ml), and the control group (n = 36, 60% male, mean age 49 ± 7 years) received identical therapy without vitamin D. HCV-RNA was assessed by realtime polymerase chain reaction (sensitivity, 10 IU/ml). The sustained virologic response (SVR) was defined as undetectable HCV-RNA at 24 wk post-treatment. RESUlTS: Clinical characteristics were similar in both groups. The treatment group had a higher mean bodymass index (27 ± 4 kg/m2 vs 24 ± 3 kg/m2, P l load (50% vs 42%, P F2: 42% vs 19%, P ls. At week 4, 16 (44%) treated patients and 6 (17%) controls were HCV-RNA negative (P k 12, 34 (94%) treated patients and 17 (48%) controls were HCV-RNA negative (P k post-treatment (SVR), 31 (86%) treated patients and 15 (42%) controls were HCV-RNA negative (P l load, advanced fibrosis and vitamin D supplementation were strongly and independently associated with SVR (multivariate analysis). Adverse events were mild and typical of Peg-α-2b/ribavirin. CONClUSION: Adding vitamin D to conventional Peg-α-2b/ribavirin therapy for treatment-na■ve patients with chronic HCV genotype 1 infection significantly improves the viral response.

Objective:To investigate the antioxidant and cytotoxic properties of the most active extracts from Ulva lactuca and laurencia obtusa against colon and cervical cancer cell ***:The antioxidant radical scavenging activity of the algal extracts was estimated using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl colorimetric ***,the cytotoxic potential of these bioactive extracts was studied against HCT-116 and Hela cells by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide *** healing analysis was adopted to evaluate the antimetastatic effects of protein extracts from both *** cycle analysis was performed by flow cytometry,and apoptotic bodies were detected using 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole fluorescent *** acids of hydrolyzed protein extract were separated and identified chromatographically by high performance liquid ***:The green algae Ulva lactuca had higher lipid content than laurencia obtusa,whereas the latter had higher protein content with high antioxidant *** extracts had significant dose-and time-dependent cytotoxicity and anti-metastatic activity against HCT-116 *** b extracts of both algae obtained from the chloroform:hexane solvent lipid-free residue caused morphological changes and induced apoptosis of HCT-116 *** analysis revealed that apoptosis induced upon laurencia obtusa protein b treatment was triggered via the ROS pathway,causing a significant increase in the sub-G_(1) *** and arginine(5.94 and 5.47μm,respectively)were the most common amino acids in laurencia obtusa protein b ***:Proteins of laurencia obtusa and Ulva lactuca could be considered as an adjuvant nutraceutical source of pro-apoptotic and anti-metastatic biomolecules against colon cancer.

Effect of Egyptian propolis on cryptosporidiosis in immunosuppressed rats with special emphasis on oocysts shedding,leukogram,protein profile and ileum histopathology

Familial mediterranean Fever: Clinical and Genetic Characteristics among lebanese Pediatric Population

Objective: The aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical features, to define the frequency of mutation type, to assess genotype-phenotype correlation and the response to colchicine in childhood-onset Familial mediterranean fever (FmF) in lebanon. methods: The characteristics of 550 children, presenting with FmF symptoms between January 2003 and January 2013 and having a positive mediterranean fever gene (mEFV gene) mutation, were prospectively investigated. The clinical and genetic characteristics as well as the response to colchicine and its side effects were studied in 321 FmF children. The mutations were correlated with clinical presentation and disease severity. Results: Out of the 321 patients (183 males and 138 females), abdominal pain was the most common presenting feature documented in 84.7%. mutational analysis detected simple heterozygotes, compound heterozygotes and homozygotes in 56.4%, 30.9% and 11.2% patients respectively. The most frequent mutation was m694V (37.2%), followed by E148Q mutation (27.4%). 71% patients received colchicine therapy;only 33.3% of them showed complete response. Genotype-phenotype correlation showed that m694V followed by E148Q was associated with moderate to severe disease form (71.6% and 62.7% respectively, P = 0.005). There was no association between mutation type and colchicine response. Conclusion: The most important features were the predominance of the m694V and E148Q. The m694V subgroup, followed by E148Q subgroup had a high disease severity score. Our data indicate an enhanced expression of the disease with E148Q mutation.
