Antioxidative, cytotoxic, and anti-metastatic potentials of Laurencia obtusa and Ulva lactuca seaweeds

Objective:To investigate the antioxidant and cytotoxic properties of the most active extracts from Ulva lactuca and Laurencia obtusa against colon and cervical cancer cell ***:The antioxidant radical scavenging activity of the algal extracts was estimated using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl colorimetric ***,the cytotoxic potential of these bioactive extracts was studied against HCT-116 and HeLa cells by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide *** healing analysis was adopted to evaluate the antimetastatic effects of protein extracts from both *** cycle analysis was performed by flow cytometry,and apoptotic bodies were detected using 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole fluorescent *** acids of hydrolyzed protein extract were separated and identified chromatographically by high performance liquid ***:The green algae Ulva lactuca had higher lipid content than Laurencia obtusa,whereas the latter had higher protein content with high antioxidant *** extracts had significant dose-and time-dependent cytotoxicity and anti-metastatic activity against HCT-116 *** b extracts of both algae obtained from the chloroform:hexane solvent lipid-free residue caused morphological changes and induced apoptosis of HCT-116 *** analysis revealed that apoptosis induced upon Laurencia obtusa protein b treatment was triggered via the ROS pathway,causing a significant increase in the sub-G_(1) *** and arginine(5.94 and 5.47μM,respectively)were the most common amino acids in Laurencia obtusa protein b ***:Proteins of Laurencia obtusa and Ulva lactuca could be considered as an adjuvant nutraceutical source of pro-apoptotic and anti-metastatic biomolecules against colon cancer.

Vitamin D supplementation improves sustained virologic response in chronic hepatitis C (genotype 1)-nave patients

AIM: To determine whether adding vitamin D, a potent immunomodulator, improves the hepatitis C virus (HCV) response to antiviral therapy. METHODS: Seventy-two consecutive patients with chronic HCV genotype 1 were randomized into two groups: the treatment group (n = 36, 50% male, mean age 47 ± 11 years) received Peg-α-2b interferon (1.5 μg/kg per week) plus ribavirin (1000-1200 mg/d) together with vitamin D3 (2000 IU/d, target serum level > 32 ng/mL), and the control group (n = 36, 60% male, mean age 49 ± 7 years) received identical therapy without vitamin D. HCV-RNA was assessed by realtime polymerase chain reaction (sensitivity, 10 IU/mL). The sustained virologic response (SVR) was defined as undetectable HCV-RNA at 24 wk post-treatment. RESULTS: Clinical characteristics were similar in both groups. The treatment group had a higher mean bodymass index (27 ± 4 kg/m2 vs 24 ± 3 kg/m2, P F2: 42% vs 19%, P < 0.001) than the controls. At week 4, 16 (44%) treated patients and 6 (17%) controls were HCV-RNA negative (P < 0.001). At week 12, 34 (94%) treated patients and 17 (48%) controls were HCV-RNA negative (P < 0.001). At 24 wk post-treatment (SVR), 31 (86%) treated patients and 15 (42%) controls were HCV-RNA negative (P < 0.001). Viral load, advanced fibrosis and vitamin D supplementation were strongly and independently associated with SVR (multivariate analysis). Adverse events were mild and typical of Peg-α-2b/ribavirin. CONCLUSION: Adding vitamin D to conventional Peg-α-2b/ribavirin therapy for treatment-na■ve patients with chronic HCV genotype 1 infection significantly improves the viral response.

Quantification of Antibiotic Residues and Determination of Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles of Microorganisms Isolated from Bovine Milk in Lebanon

The rapid growth of dairy sectors in the Middle East, particularly in Lebanon, led to extensive use of antibiotics to enhance the health and productivity of animals. Prolonged usage may lead to antibiotic residues in foods of animal origin;hence, the emergence of antimicrobial resistant microorganisms. Accurate data on the antibiotic usage in livestock treatment, antibiotic residues and antimicrobial resistances in raw milk in Lebanon are lacking. This study aimed to investigate the types and usages of antibiotics in cattle, their residual levels and the potential microbial resistances in raw milk samples. A questionnaire-based survey identified Gentamicin and Streptomycin as the most frequently used antibiotics. Selected raw milk samples from main dairy farms were then analyzed in duplicate by quantitative ELISA for the antibiotics residual levels. The mean residual levels of Gentamicin and Streptomycin were 90 and 80 μg/L, respectively;which are below the allowable maximum residue limit of 200 μg/L as set by the FAO/WHO. Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and total aerobic microorganisms isolated from the milk samples were then tested for resistance against Gentamicin and Streptomycin by the disc agar diffusion method. All the S. aureus, E. coli, and L. monocytogenes isolates showed high resistance to Gentamicin. However, 95% of S. aureus, 60% of E. coli and 58% of L. monocytogenes isolates were resistant to Streptomycin. The obtained results provide evidence that antimicrobial resistant strains of the above pathogens have become remarkably widespread in raw milk. This requires better management for antibiotic usages among livestock farmers to control sources of food contamination and reduce the health risks associated with the development of resistant microbial strains.

Sex steroids, also known as sex hormones are synthesized naturally by the gonads (ovaries or testes). The two main classes of sex steroids, androgens and estrogens, are crucial hormones for the proper development and function of the body;they regulate sexual differentiation, the secondary sex characteristics, and sexual habits. They are also well known to influence many common cancers, especially hormonally driven cancers such as breast and prostate cancer. In this report, we review the association of sex steroids with cancer and the potential use of endocrine manipulation in cancer therapy as well as the limitations and challenges faced in this field.

Uncertainties of ＂in v/vo＂ Dosimetry Using Semiconductors

The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the uncertainties of in vivo dosimetry measured with diode detectors for conformal radiation therapy techniques in order to define appropriate tolerance levels for pelvis and breast treatment in MEIH （Middle East Institute of Health）. The present work is carried out on 30-472 and 30-473 diode detectors irradiated by 4 and 15MV photon beams of a medical linear accelerator Synergy from ELEKTA. Dose computation is performed with Pinnacle 7.4 k treatment planning system. First, an estimation of the uncertainties in a simple geometric case, using a water-equivalent solid phantom is done. Secondly, each treatment parameter such as field size, beam angle, beam modifiers and source-skin distance is evaluated in order to simulate the conformal radiation treatments used in the present institution for the main anatomical sites. Interpretation of entrance dose in-vivo measurements requires the determination of appropriate tolerance levels. Indeed, the authors found that the 5% action level proposed in the literature underestimates the uncertainties in the treatment process. A method for the evaluation of tolerance/action levels related to the different anatomical sites is developed. By the end of the present study the authors have developed an integrated monitoring system that offers accurate information about the dose received by patients.

汉阿交替传译在产出过程中常常会出现不当停顿问题,这是影响口译质量的重要因素。译员在交替传译的过程中,由于多种原因,会产生译语不当停顿,影响产出语流,降低口译效率与质量,给听众的理解造成障碍,影响对译员的信任,同时也影响译员的自信。因此,笔者选择不当停顿作为研究和分析的主题,总结了造成笔者在模拟会议口译中出现不当停顿的原因并提出应对策略。本文以2020年周小川在“外滩金融峰会”演讲的模拟会议为例,笔者在模拟会议上负责整场会议的交传,笔者尽力做到清楚完整的翻译。会议完成后,笔者对源语和译语进行了转写和比较,分析了笔记和译语中不当停顿的例子,并研究了成因及对策。通过分析发现,案例中出现不当停顿的主要原因有对源语同音近音词辨析能力不足、笔记不当、译语标准语掌握不足、心理素质欠佳。为应对不当停顿、提高口译质量,笔者给出了相应策略:提高源语同音近音词的辨析能力、完善笔记系统、提升译语标准语表达能力、提升译员的心理素质。笔者参考了相关文献,并结合自身案例撰写本论文,希望本文案例中的不当停顿成因分析和解决策略,能帮助阿拉伯口译学习者更准确流利地进行汉阿口译,减少不当停顿,提高汉阿口译质量。

Effect of Egyptian propolis on cryptosporidiosis in immunosuppressed rats with special emphasis on oocysts shedding,leukogram,protein profile and ileum histopathology

Objective:To investigate the activity of Egyptian propolis extracts(ethanol and water)on cryptosporidiosis in experimentally infected dexamethasone-immunosuppressed ***:A total of 180 male rats(190-220)g BWt were randomly divided into 9 equal groups(G1-G9).Groups of rats were kept as(G1):normal control,(G2-G9):immunosuppressed with dexamethasone and(G3-G9):infected with Cryptosporidium *** from(G4to G9)were given orally ethanol and water extract of propolis(at a dose of 50 mg/kg BWt)and nitazoxanide(standard anti-cryptosporidial drug at a dose of 100 mg/kg BWt)to infected rats with different *** pellets were collected from all groups to monitor oocysts shedding from the 2nd to the 15th day post *** the end of the experiment,blood was collected from all groups for determination of leukogram and serum *** specimens were also examined ***:The highest reduction of oocysts shedding in faecal samples was 88%in rats prophylactically treated with propolis ethanol extract at the 4th dpi,and in rats prophylactically treated with water extract of propolis,was91%at the 6th *** was a marked increase in neutrophils count and α_2-andβ-globulins levels in infected rats treated with both extracts,while a significant decrease was detected in lymphocytes compared to the infected non treated group.β-globulin level markedly increased in the rats administered *** changes were observed in the ileum of rats infected with ***:Egyptian propolis extracts have an activity on cryptosporidiosis in ***,propolis modulated the immunity in dexamethasone-immunosuppressed rats.

In vitro antitumor efficacy of Kochia indica extract on human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line with or without 5-fluorouracil

Aim: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver malignancy and the sixth most common cancer worldwide. The resistance to chemotherapy is a major obstacle in the treatment of HCC, necessitating the discovery of additional agents. There is a growing use of anticancer complementary and alternative medicine worldwide. Therefore, the aim of present study was focused on the confirmation of the suitability and validity of the new markers which would be achieved by demonstrating their significant change and reproducible expression during disease and disease management. Methods: HepG2 cell line was used to provide a source for HCC cells. The cell cultures were divided into 4 groups: control untreated group, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) treated group as a standard chemotherapy for HCC (positive control) with the following doses (15.625, 31.2, 62.5, 125, 250 μg/mL), Kochia indica extract treated group with the following concentration (12.5, 25, 50, 100, 200 μg/mL) and the group treated with a combination of 5-FU and Kochia indica in different ratios. Results: Treatment with Kochia indica extract, 5-FU and the combined treatment showed a significant cytotoxicity to HepG2 cells, with different IC50 values, when compared to the control. Regarding toxic effect, 5-FU showed IC50 = 237.56 μg/mL which is lower cytotoxic in compared to Kochia indica with IC50 =120.5 μg/mL. The results also revealed that tumor cells were more resistant to 5-FU. Alternatively, the co-treatment with Kochia indica extract ameliorated the toxicity induced by 5-FU and enhanced its therapeutic potency, either by synergistic effect of both agents and/or due to its flavonoid components that may enhance the physiological properties of the cell membranes, facilitating 5-FU entrance into tumor cells. This decreased its therapeutic dose to less than 250 μg/mL by combination therapy.
