Postnatal development of rat retina:a continuous observation and comparison between the organotypic retinal explant model and in vivo development

The organotypic retinal explant culture has been established for more than a decade and offers a range of unique advantages compared with in vivo experiments and cell ***,the lack of systematic and continuous comparison between in vivo retinal development and the organotypic retinal explant culture makes this model controversial in postnatal retinal development ***,we aimed to verify the feasibility of using this model for postnatal retinal development studies by comparing it with the in vivo *** this study,we showed that postnatal retinal explants undergo normal development,and exhibit a consistent structure and timeline with retinas in ***,we used SOX2 and PAX6 immunostaining to identify retinal progenitor *** then examined cell proliferation and migration by immunostaining with Ki-67 and doublecortin,***-67-and doublecortin-positive cells decreased in both in vivo and explants during postnatal retinogenesis,and exhibited a high degree of similarity in abundance and distribution between ***,we used Ceh-10 homeodomain-containing homolog,glutamate-ammonia ligase(glutamine synthetase),neuronal nuclei,and ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 immunostaining to examine the emergence of bipolar cells,Müller glia,mature neurons,and microglia,*** timing and spatial patterns of the emergence of these cell types were remarkably consistent between in vivo and explant *** study showed that the organotypic retinal explant culture model had a high degree of consistency with the progression of in vivo early postnatal retina *** findings confirm the accuracy and credibility of this model and support its use for long-term,systematic,and continuous observation.

Predicting roof-surface wind pressure induced by conical vortex using a BP neural network combined with POD

This study aims to examine the feasibility of predicting surface wind pressure induced by conical vortex using a backpropagation neural network(BPNN)combined with proper orthogonal decomposition(POD),in which a 1:150 scaled model with a large-span retractable roof was tested in wind tunnel under both laminar and turbulent flow *** distributions of mean and fluctuating wind pressure coefficients were first described,and the effects of inflow turbulence,wind direction,roof opening were examined *** the prediction of wind pressure,the POD-BPNN model was trained using measurement data from adjacent *** prediction results are overall *** root-mean-square-error(RMSE)between test and predicted data lies mostly within 10%.In particular,the prediction of mean wind pressure is found to be better than that of fluctuating wind *** outcomes in this study highlight that the proposed POD-BPNN model can be well used as a useful tool to predict surface wind pressure.

Numerical simulation of gas-liquid two-phase flow impacting fixed structure by CLSVOF/IB method based on OpenFOAM

In this paper,a coupled level set and volume of fluid,immersed boundary(CLSVOF/IB)method is proposed and implemented into the interFoam solver of the OpenFOAM to simulate the gas-liquid two-phase flows,involving the gas-liquid and fluid-structure *** the volume of fluid(VOF)method,the multidimensional universal limiter with explicit solution(MULES)approach is used to restrain the volume *** approach for calculating the grid characteristic size for the level set(LS)initial function and the re-initialization equation is proposed in order to make it more applicable to non-uniform grids in the finite volume *** the proposed CLSVOF method,the continuous LS function is used to calculate the gas-liquid interface curvature so that the surface tension term can be calculated *** the immersed boundary(IB)method proposed in this paper,a virtual forcing term is introduced in the momentum equation to deal with the fluid-structure interface by defining a solid volume fraction,which is convenient for the three-dimensional numerical *** the present flow field solver,an improved scheme of the velocity predictor loop of the PIMPLE framework is also *** benchmark cases:the Zalesak’s notched disk and a circular bubble at equilibrium,are simulated first to examine the accuracy of the present CLSVOF ***,the effects of several gas-liquid two-phase flows on different fixed structures are *** simulation results are in good agreement with the published numerical and experimental results.

Online estimation and characteristic analysis of double nugget diameters during aluminum/steel resistance spot welding process

Online estimation of the double nugget diameters was performed by means of a back propagation neural *** double nugget diameters were obtained using actual welding experiment and numerical simulation,according to different characteristics of aluminum nugget and steel *** input of the neural network was some key characteristic parameters extracted from dynamic power signal,which were peak point,knee point and their variation rate over time,as well as heat energy delivered into the welding *** architecture of the neural network was confirmed by confirming the number of neurons in hidden layer through a series of *** key parameters of the neural network were obtained by means of training 81 arrays of data ***,the neural network was used to test the remaining 20 arrays of verifying data set,and the results showed that both of the mean errors for the two nugget diameters were below 3%.In addition,corresponding analyses showed that the accuracy of two nugget diameters was higher than that of tensile-shear strength.

Treatment of Uncomplicated Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection with Chinese Medicine Formula: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Objective: To evaluate Chinese medicine(CM) formula Bazheng Powder(八正散) as an alternative therapeutic option for female patients with recurrent urinary tract infection(RUTI). Methods: A randomized double-blinded trial was performed. Eligible female patients with RUTI were recruited from one hospital and two community health centers. By using a blocked randomization scheme, participants were randomized to receive a CM formula(10 herbs) and antibiotics placebo for 4 weeks, or antibiotics for 1 week followed by 3 weeks of placebo and CM formula placebo. Clinical cure rate and microbiological cure and recurrence after treatment were evaluated. Results: A total 122 eligible patients were enrolled, with 61 cases in each group. The clinical cure rate by the intent-to-treatment approach was 90.2% for the CM group and 82.0% for the antibiotics group(P>0.05). Bacteria were cleared from 88.5%(54/61) of patients in the CM group and 82.0%(50/61) in the antibiotics group. The recurrence rate in recovered patients at the 6-month follow-up was 9.1%(5/61) and 14.0(7/61) in the CM and antibiotics groups, respectively(P>0.05). Conclusion: CM formula Bazheng Powder is a good alternative option for RUTI treatment.(Registration No. NCT01745328)

Effect of Hydrogen Binding on Selective Recognition of Halide Anions

The interplay of molecular rigidity enforced by interior or exterior hydrogen bonding and affinity for binding halide anions is described to demonstrate the effect of intramolecular hydrogen bonding in anion recognition process. To this end pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamides 1 and 2, and aromatic oligoamides 3 and 4 containing intramolecular hydrogen bonds were explored for their ability in associating with tetrabutylammonium halide （Cl^-, Br^-, and I^-）. Binding constants in chloroform solution were calculated using nonlinear curve-fitting method based on ^1H NMR titration experiments. The trimeric amide 3, which adopts a crescent conformation as revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, strongly binds chloride anion with binding constant as high as 379 L·mol^-1. This is more than 6 times greater than the binding constant for the control receptor 2 with a backbone that is only partially rigidifled. The comparative data provided supportive information for rationalizing the observed affinity difference in binding halide anions in terms of local preorganization effected by interior or exterior hydrogen bonding.

Mechanical behaviors of interaction between coral sand and structure surface

Based on the interface shear tests,the macro-and meso-mechanical behaviors of interaction between coral sand and different structure surfaces are studied,in which CCD camera is used to capture digital images to analyze the evolution of the interaction band and a particle analysis apparatus is applied to studying the distribution characteristics of particle *** study proposes four-stage evolution process based on the shear stress−strain *** the shear process,coral sand particles slide and rotate within the interaction band,causing the changes in shear stress and vertical *** addition,the effects of structure surface roughness on shear strength,volume change and particle breakage are illustrated that the greater the roughness of slabs is,the larger the shear stress is,the more obvious the contraction effect is and the more the particles ***,the change in particle’s 3D morphology during the breakage will change not only their size but also other morphological characteristics with convergence and self-organization.

Relationship between the Virtual Dynamic Thinning Line and the Self-Thinning Boundary Line in Simulated Plant Populations

The self-thinning rule defines a straight upper boundary line on log-log scales for all possible combinations of mean individual biomass and density in plant populations. Recently, the traditional slope of the upper boundary line, -3/2, has been challenged by -4/3 which is deduced from some new mechanical theories, like the metabolic theory. More experimental or field studies should be carried out to identify the more accurate self-thinning exponent. But it＇s hard to obtain the accurate self-thinning exponent by fitting to data points directly because of the intrinsic problem of subjectivity in data selection. The virtual dynamic thinning line is derived from the competition-density （C-D） effect as the initial density tends to be positive infinity, avoiding the data selection process. The purpose of this study was to study the relationship between the virtual dynamic thinning line and the upper boundary line in simulated plant stands. Our research showed that the upper boundary line and the virtual dynamic thinning line were both straight lines on log-log scales. The slopes were almost the same value with only a very little difference of 0.059, and the intercept of the upper boundary line was a little larger than that of the virtual dynamic thinning line. As initial size and spatial distribution patterns became more uniform, the virtual dynamic thinning line was more similar to the upper boundary line. This implies that, given appropriate parameters, the virtual dynamic thinning line may be used as the upper boundary line in simulated plant stands.
