Effect of Zinc Sulfate against the Red Palm.Weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus with Reference to Their Histological Changes on the Larval m.dgut and Adult Reproductive System

The red palm.weevil Rhynchophorusferrugineus is the m.st im.ortant insect pest for the date palm.trees in the m.ddle East and Gulf states. Zinc sulfate （ZnSOa＇H20） was toxicologically, biologically and physiologically evaluated as insect developm.nt disruptors against the RPW. LCs0 of Zinc sulfate against 10 days old larvae was 0.566%, 3% concentration inhibited the larvae from.feeding. LCs0 concentration of zinc sulfate solution was capable to disrupting growth, developm.nt and reproduction of R. ferrugineus. Growth and developm.nt disruptions are resulted from.larval feeding on the treated diet that causing percentage of m.rtality rate, retardation in larval and pupal duration, percentage of pupation, adults em.rgence, reduction in deposited eggs that laid by the resulting adults and in the egg fertility. The study further reveals that Zinc sulfate effects on histological structure of epithelial cells of the larval m.dgut including separation and elongation of their cells, rupture in the peritrophic m.m.rane and in som. m.crovilli and som. degeneration of the surrounding m.scles. Histological changes also was observed on the adults ovary, in this way, disrupt fem.le gam.te production through their action on the accum.lation of yolk granules （vitellogenesis） and follicular epithelial cells. Disruption of m.le gam.te production was detected by disorganized of testicular cysts and depopulation of these cysts in addition to degeneration in germ.cells. Zinc sulfate m.y be used am.ng other control m.thods by injection into the tree trunk or as fertilizer around the tree roots which in turn m.y have an indirect effect for controlling the RPW.

Som. Natural Plant Extracts Having Biocide Activities against the Am.rican Bollworm.<i>Helicoverpa arm.gera</i>(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

In the present research, the toxicity, antifeedant activity and biological effects of ethanolic leaves extract of four m.dicinal plants nam.d Eucalyptus rostrata, Dodonea viscosa, Rhyza stricta and Cym.opogon schoenanthus were evaluated on 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar larvae of H. arm.gera under laboratory condition. The results showed that values of LC50 in m. of different plant extracts in m./100m. of the larval diet can be arranged in an ascending order as follows: Dodonea 7.23 > Cym.opogon 12.59 > Rhazya 14.52 > Eucalyptus 29.42 m./100m. diet (the least LC50 is m.re toxic than the higher one). all the tested extracts had antifeedant and starvation effects against the 2nd, 3rd, 4th instar larvae. D. viscose extract possesses the least antifeedant effect even of their higher toxicity. There was clear relation between the percent of starvation and antifeedant of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th larval instar. all extracts were nearly the sam. in their effect on the biotic potential;of the insect, and possess latent effect when tested against 2nd instar larvae, the value of LC 50 of the extract was added to the diet, extracts increased larval duration, deform.tion between pupae and adult stages, m.ths sterility, increased as decreasing in fem.les egg production. Other effects were noticed, reduction in percentage of pupation and m.ths em.rgence. The plant extracts can be arranged ascending according to percentage of their sterility effects as follows: C. schoenanthus E. rostrata R. stricta D. viscose. all extracts cause disruption on the biology and physiology of the insect, and all extract induced percentages of deform.tion between pupal and m.th stages. The ethanolic extract of the plant leaves of the tested plans m.y be used for control H. arm.gera in com.ination with other m.thods in the integrated program.in order to decrease the buildup of the resistance and protect the environm.nt from.chem.cal pollution.
