Association of vitamin D receptor gene polymorphism(VDR)with vitamin D deficiency,metabolic and inflammatory markers in Egyptian obese women

Vitamin D deficiency might contribute to the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome and could cause immune *** aim of this study is to analyze the associations between Vitamin D receptor(VDR)gene polymorphism,serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D,metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers in Egyptian obese *** study included 201 obese women with vitamin D deficiency and 249 obese matched age healthy controls with sufficient vitamin D *** age ranged between 25 and 35 *** biomarkers(interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein)and serum 25(OH)D were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent *** resistance(IR)was determined by the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR).Vitamin D receptor(VDR)gene polymorphisms of FokI,ApaI,and TaqI were studied by PCR using the restriction fragment length polymorphism(RFLP)*** women with vitamin D deficiency had significant higher values of inflammatory and metabolic parameters compared to ***-logistic regression showed associations between 25(OH)D deficiency and metabolic components when comparing cases with ***,cases carrying polymorphic alleles showed significant lower levels of serum 25(OH)D and higher HOMA-IR,blood pressure levels and lipid parameters compared to those with the wild type homozygote in obese cases with vitamin D *** D deficiency in Egyptian obese women with vitamin D deficiency is associated with abnormal metabolic components and abnormal inflammatory ***,VDR polymorphisms play important role in immune and inflammation status.

Comparison of Water Quality Status of Disturbed and Undisturbed Mangrove Forest at Awat-Awat Lawas Sarawak

Water quality testing was compulsory for management of safe and reliable water sources. Various sources of pollution and destruction of mangrove forest decrease the quality of river water. Thus a study was conducted to determine the water quality status of mangrove forest river water of Awat-Awat Lawas Sarawak and compare the water quality status of disturbed and undisturbed mangrove forest river in that area. Samples from twelve sampling stations were collected from both mangrove forest river from October 2013 to March 2014. In-situ data collected (pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), salinity, turbidity, total dissolved solid (TDS), conductivity) and laboratory analysis (biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammoniacal nitrogen (AN), total suspended solid (TSS)) were conducted according to the Standard method of Examination of Water and Wastewater AHPA 2005. Six water parameters: pH, DO, BOD, COD, AN and TSS value were used in calculating the Water Quality Index (WQI). Mean values for disturbed area were follows, pH (7.07), temperature (29.93°C), salinity (15.64 PSU), turbidity (55.13 NTU), DO (4.59 mg/L), BOD (0.73 mg/L), COD (10.16 mg/L), AN (0.14 mg/L), TSS (53.92 mg/L), TDS (23.14 mg/L) and conductivity (2.61 ms/m). Undisturbed area results were, pH (6.84), temperature (28.32°C), salinity (14.65 PSU), turbidity (35.41 NTU), DO (2.39 mg/L), BOD (0.55 mg/L), COD (15.82 mg/L), AN (0.13 mg/L), TSS (53.23 mg/L), TDS (22.82 mg/L) and conductivity (2.34 ms/m). There were no significant differences between two locations except for DO. Both water qualities of disturbed and undisturbed mangrove forest river were found under Class III, which describe that the water bodies are in moderate quality status.

Accelerated versus standard corneal cross linking in the treatment of ectasia post refractive surgery and penetrating keratoplasty: a medium term randomized trial

AIM: To compare the clinical outcomes of the standard corneal cross linking(CXL) and the accelerated CXL in patients with progressive corneal ectasia post refractive surgery and penetrating ***: Totally 120 eyes of 83 patients scheduled to receive either standard CXL(3 m W/cm^2 for a period of 30 min) or accelerated CXL(18 m W/cm2 for a period of 5 min). The main outcomes for comparison were the change in: maximum-K reading(K-max), manifest refractive spherical equivalent(SE), central corneal thickness(CCT), and the best corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA).RESULTS: One hundred and eleven eyes completed the study. The main outcome measurement was the K-max reading. Both group showed significant improvement in the value postoperatively at 6 and 12 mo. The mean change in the standard group was 1.21±0.11 D and in the accelerated group was 0.90±0.05 D at the end of 12 mo postoperatively, with no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups. Similarly, CDVA improved significantly from their preoperative value in the standard group by 2.98±0.11 letters, and in the accelerated group by 2.20±0.06 letters, with no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Both of the SE, and CCT showed no statistically significant difference at the end of follow up period in each ***: Both standard CXL and accelerated CXL are safe and effective treatment in halting ectasia after corneal refractive surgery. The accelerated CXL results are comparable to the standard CXL with short time exposure of the cornea to ultraviolet irradiation, leading to reduced operation time, reduced operative ocular discomfort, and corneal haze.

A Novel Approach to Disqualify Datasets Using Accumulative Statistical Spread Map with Neural Networks (ASSM-NN)

A novel approach to detect and filter out an unhealthy dataset from a matrix of datasets is developed, tested, and proved. The technique employs a new type of self organizing map called Accumulative Statistical Spread Map (ASSM) to establish the destructive and negative effect a dataset will have on the rest of the matrix if stayed within that matrix. The ASSM is supported by training a neural network engine, which will determine which dataset is responsible for its inability to learn, classify and predict. The carried out experiments proved that a neural system was not able to learn in the presence of such an unhealthy dataset that possessed some deviated characteristics, even though it was produced under the same conditions and through the same process as the rest of the datasets in the matrix, and hence, it should be disqualified, and either removed completely or transferred to another matrix. Such novel approach is very useful in pattern recognition of datasets and features that do not belong to their source and could be used as an effective tool to detect suspicious activities in many areas of secure filing, communication and data storage.

Application of Hyperspectral Band Elimination Technique to PVT Images of Composite Structures

A new approach to NDT of composite structures using Band Elimination of the analyzed image index by Hyperspectral image analysis approach is presented and discussed. The matrix Band Elimination technique allows the monitoring and analysis of a components structure based on Filtering of bands and correlation between sequentially pulsed thermal images and their indices. The technique produces several matrices resulting from frame deviation and pixel redistribution calculations for intelligent classification and property prediction. The obtained results proved the technique to be capable of identifying damaged components with ability to model various types of damage under different conditions.

Disparity in Intelligent Classification of Data Sets Due to Dominant Pattern Effect (DPE)

A hypothesis of the existence of dominant pattern that may affect the performance of a neural based pattern recognition system and its operation in terms of correct and accurate classification, pruning and optimization is assumed, presented, tested and proved to be correct. Two sets of data subjected to the same ranking process using four main features are used to train a neural network engine separately and jointly. Data transformation and statistical pre-processing are carried out on the datasets before inserting them into the specifically designed multi-layer neural network employing Weight Elimination Algorithm with Back Propagation (WEA-BP). The dynamics of classification and weight elimination process is correlated and used to prove the dominance of one dataset. The presented results proved that one dataset acted aggressively towards the system and displaced the first dataset making its classification almost impossible. Such modulation to the relationships among the selected features of the affected dataset resulted in a mutated pattern and subsequent re-arrangement in the data set ranking of its members.

The present research reports of quick and marked changes induced by plant extract of Euryops arabicus in the gene expression of 49-kDa apyrases,cytoskeletal proteins,ATPases,ADPase and amount of amino acid of pea(Pisum sativum ***).Pellets of cytoskeletals proteins(27000 xg)were probed with anti-apyrase antibody,biotinylated anti-rat,actin and alpha and beta-tubulin for Western *** and ADPase activities were determined based on the hydrolytic efficacy of adenine triphosphate and adenine *** 72 hours,the abundance of apyrases,cytoskeletal proteins and amount of amino acid in pellets of 27000 xg of germinated pea seeds in *** extracts were sharply increased than those sown in distilled *** the samples exhibited that the stems had more amount from apyrases,cytoskeletal proteins,amino acids and ATPase and ADPase activities than primary leaves and primary roots that were germinated either on *** water extract or in distilled *** on the enzyme’s capability to hydrolyse nucleotide triphosphate and nucleotide diphosphate as well as the direct association between expression of 49-kDa apyrase and cytoskeletal proteins,*** water extract had an important effect on plant germinations.

Improving the OCR of Low Contrast, Small Fonts, Dark Background Forms Using Correlated Zoom and Resolution Technique (CZRT)

Many formal institutions, companies, hospitals, laboratories need some time to exchange hand signed reports through modern communication means such as Fax, E-mails, and others. A problem is faced due to the quality of both scanned documents and originally used paper, which results in problems in converting such images to text. In addition, font type and size, contrast and background darkness have an adverse effect on the accuracy of the resulted text. Thus, an investigation into the relationship between scanned document zoom and scanning resolution in Dots per Inch (DPI) for a special case and type of scanned forms is carried out to enable design of an algorithm that takes into account such cases. It is found that a much higher level of zooming and resolution is needed to achieve acceptable recognition for the special case of dark, low contrast, small font forms. It is also found that the optimum zooming level is set by the number of recognized words as they are more difficult to learn and analyze.

Resilience of a high latitude Red Sea corals to extreme temperature

Our research objective was to expand the very limited knowledgebase pertaining to the ecology of fringing coral reefs in the Gulf of Suez, Egypt. Specifically, determine dominant coral species and investigate why this reef is capable of surviving at such a high-latitude and extreme harsh environment. Data collection included annual reef surveys, randomized quadrat sampling, five permanent video transects and in situ seawater temperature. Of the known Gulf of Suez 35 taxa, only six (Acropora humilis, A. microclados, A. hemprichii, Litophyton arboretum, Stylophora pistillata, Porites columna, and P. plantulata), compose 94% of the reef's coral cover. Coral dominance across species shifted drastically during the study period. However, the six coral dominance remained unchanged, while some decreased others increased. These six coral taxa regularly experience daily changes in seawater temperature and seasonal variations that exceed These extreme temperatures variation and the fact that only six coral taxa dominance remained unchanged, suggest that these corals may have developed a mechanism to cope with extreme seawater temperatures as evidenced by their continued growth and survival over the study period. We speculate that species dominance shift occurred largely as a result of a local oil spill rather than exposure to extreme temperatures. Further scrutiny of these species and the mechanisms by which they are able to thrive is recommended, as they hold the potential to benefit other coral communities as a resilient transplant species and model for understanding coral survivability in extreme environmental conditions.
