Cotton yield is a function of growth rates,flower production rates,and flower and boll retention during the fruiting *** on the relationship between climatic factors and the cotton plant’s ability to produce and sustain flower buds,flowers,and bolls will allow one to model plant responses to conditions that frequently occur in the field and to predict developmental rate or the formation of these *** study investigates the statistical relationship between various climatic factors and overall flower and boll ***,the relationship between climatic factors and production of flowers and bolls obtained during the development periods of the flowering and boll ***,predicting effects of climatic factors during different convenient intervals(in days)on cotton flower and boll production compared with daily ***,sunshine duration,relative humidity,surface soil temperature at 1800 h,and maximum air temperature,are the important climatic factors that significantly affect flower and boll *** five-day interval was found to be more adequately and sensibly related to yield ***;minimum humidity and sunshine duration were the most effective climatic factors during preceding and succeeding periods on boll production and *** was a negative correlation between flower and boll production and either evaporation or sunshine duration,while that correlation with minimum relative humidity was positive.

Aims Supplying optimal quantities of mineral nutrients to growing crop plants is one way to improve crop *** need to be used rationally in order to avoid a negative ecological impact and undesirable effects on the sustainability of agricultural production *** application of nutrients also affects the farmer’s *** order to calculate the amount of fertilizer to be applied to crops,it is necessary to develop recommendation programmers that adjust nutrient rates to crop *** Experiments in two successive seasons were conducted to investigate the effect of K fertilization and foliar application of Zn and P on yield and fiber properties of cotton *** ***(0.0 and 47.4 kg of K ha^(-1))was soil applied,while chelated zinc(0.0 and 57.6 g of Zn ha^(-1),applied twice at 70 and 85 days after sowing‘DAS’)and phosphorus(0.0,576,1152 and 1728 g of P ha^(-1),applied twice at 80 and 95 DAS)were applied to the *** findings Dry matter yield,total chlorophyll concentration,K,Zn and P uptake per plant,number of opened bolls per plant,boll weight,seed index,lint index,seed cotton yield per plant,seed cotton and lint yield ha^(-1) and earliness of harvest increased with the application of K,Zn and *** generally had no significant effect on lint percentage and fiber properties,with exceptions,for micronaire reading and flat bundle strength,and uniformity ratio,where the mean values of these characters were significantly increased over the untreated control by applying K,and for the micronaire reading in the first season,when applying P at 1728 g ha^(-1),and uniformity ratio in the second season,when applying Pat 1152 and 1728 g ha^(-1),where the mean values of these characters were significantly increased over the untreated control by applying *** the conditions of this study,applying K fertilization at 47.4 kg ha^(-1) combined with spraying cotton plants with zinc at 57.6 g ha^(-1) and also with P at

This study investigates the statistical relationship between climatic variables and aspects of cotton production (G. barbadense), and the effects of climatic factors prevailing prior to flowering or subsequent to boll setting on flower and boll production and retention in cotton. The effects of specific climatic factors during both pre-?and post-anthesis periods on boll production and retention are mostly unknown. However, by determining the relationship of climatic factors with flower and boll production and retention, the overall level of production can be possibly predicted. Thus, an understanding of these relationships may help physiologists determine control mechanisms of production in cotton plants. Also, the study covers the predicted effects of climatic factors during convenient intervals (in days) on cotton flower and boll production compared with daily observations. Further, cotton flower and boll production as affected by climatic factors and soil moisture status has been considered. Evaporation, sunshine duration, relative humidity, surface soil temperature at 1800 h, and maximum air temperature, are the important climatic factors that significantly affect flower and boll production. The least important variables were found to be surface soil temperature at 600 h and minimum temperature. The five-day interval was found to be more adequately and sensibly related to yield parameters. Evaporation, minimum humidity and sunshine duration were the most effective climatic factors during preceding and succeeding periods on boll production and retention. There was a negative correlation between flower number and boll production and either evaporation or sunshine duration, while that correlation with minimum relative humidity was positive. The soil moisture status showed low and insignificant correlation with flower and boll production. Higher minimum relative humidity, short period of sunshine duration, and low temperatures enhanced flower and boll formation.

The increase in the population in Egypt makes it imperative to explore promising approaches to increase food supply, including protein and oil, to meet the needs of the Egyptian people. Cotton is the principal crop of Egyptian agriculture, it is grown mainly for its fiber, but cottonseed products are also of economic importance. Cottonseed is presently the main source of edible oil and meal for livestock in Egypt. Economic conditions in modern agriculture demand high crop yields in order to be profitable and consequently meet the high demand for food that comes with population growth. Oil crop production can be improved by development of new high yielding varieties, and the application of appropriate agronomic practices. There is limited information about the most suitable management practice for application of N, P, K, Zn, Ca and PGRs in order to optimize the quantity and quality of oil and protein of cottonseed. In maximizing the quantity and quality of a crop’s nutritional value in terms of fatty acids and protein, field experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, foliar application of zinc and calcium, the use of plant growth retardants (Pix, Cycocel or Alar), on cottonseed, protein, oil yields, and oil properties of Egyptian cotton. From the findings of this study, it seems rational to recommend that application of N, P, K, foliar application of Zn and Ca, the use of PGRs (Pix, Cycocel or Alar), could bring about better impact on cottonseed yield, seed protein content, oil and protein yields, oil refractive index, unsaponifiable matter, and unsaturated fatty acids in comparison with the ordinary cultural practices adopted by Egyptian cotton producers.

Seed quality is one of the most important factors for stand establishment in cotton (Gossypium Sp.), and the use of good-quality seeds is therefore essential to obtain an optimum plant population. Conditions prevailing during seed formation can affect the quality of seed produced, and hence crop establishment in the next growing season. These conditions can affect the germination of the seeds and the ability of the seedlings to emerge from soil. Field experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), foliar application of zinc (Zn) and calcium (Ca), and the use of plant growth retardants (PGR) [e.g., 1, 1-dimethyl piperidinium chloride (mC);2-chloroethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CC);or succinic acid 2, 2-dimethyl hydrazide (SADH)], during square initiation and boll setting stage, on growth, seed yield, seed viability, and seedling vigor of Egyptian cotton (G. barbadense). Dry matter yield, total chlorophyll concentration, K, Zn and P-uptake plant-1, were increased with the addition of K, foliar application of Zn, and different concentrations of P (576-1728 g·ha-1 of P). Seed yield plant-1 and plot-1, seed weight, seed viability, seedling vigor, and cool germination test performance increased as a result of the addition of the high N-rate (142.8 kg·ha-1 N), the high P-rate (74 kg·ha-1 P2O5), K (47 kg·ha-1 K), and from application of Zn, and Ca and the PGR. From the findings of the present study, band application of such treatments showed improved cotton-seed yield and affected the quality of seed produced, and hence crop establishment in the next growing season.

A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of nitrogen (N) fertilizer and foliar appli-cation of potassium (K) and mepiquat Chloride (mC) on yield of cotton. Seed cotton yield per plant and seed cotton and lint yield per hectare;have been increased due to the higher N rate and use of foliar application of K and mC. No significant interactions were found among the variables in the present study (N, K and mC) with respect to characters under investigation. Generally, interactions indicated that, the fa-vorable effects ascribed to the application of N;spraying cotton plants with K combined with mC on cotton productivity, were more obvious by applying N at 143 kg per hectare, and combined with spraying cotton plants with K at 957 g per hectare and also with mC at 48 + 24 g active ingredient per hectare. Sensible increases were found in seed cotton yield per hectare (about 40%) as a result of applying the same combination. However, this interaction did not reach the level of significance, so, statistical approach for dealing with the non-significant interactions between treatments, depending on the Least Significant Difference values has been suggested, to provide an opportunity to disclosure of the interaction effects regardless of their insignificance. As a matter of fact the original formula used in calculating the significance of interactions suffers a possible shortage, which can be eliminated through applying the new suggested formula.

Biochar addition to soil is currently being considered as a means to sequester carbon while simultaneously improving soil health,soil fertility and agronomic benefits. The focus of this special issue is on current research on the effects of biochar application to soil for overcoming diverse soil constraints and recommending further research relating to biochar application to soil. The biochar research has progressed considerably with important key findings on agronomic benefits, carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas emissions, soil acidity, soil fertility, soil health, soil salinity, etc., but more research is required before definitive recommendations can be made to end-users regarding the effects of biochar application across a range of soils, climates and land management practices.

mine tailings, waste rock piles, acid mine drainage, industrial wastewater, and sewage sludge have contaminated a vast area of cultivable and fallow lands, with a consequence of deterioration of soil and water quality and watercourses due to the erosion of contaminated soils for absence of vegetative cover. High concentrations of toxic elements, organic contaminants, acidic soils, and harsh climatic conditions have made it difficult to re-establish vegetation and produce crops there. Recently, a significant body of work has focussed on the suitability and potentiality of biochar as a soil remediation tool that increases seed emergence, soil and crop productivity, above ground biomass, and vegetation cover on mine tailings, waste rock piles, and industrial and sewage waste- contaminated soils by increasing soil nutrients and water-holding capacity, amelioration of soil acidity, and stimulation of microbial diversity and functions. This review addresses： i） the functional properties of biochar, and microbial cycling of nutrients in soil; ii） bioremediation, especially phytoremediation of mine railings, industrial waste, sewage sludge, and contaminated soil using biochar; iii） impact of biochar on reduction of acid production, acid mine drainage treatment, and geochemical dynamics in mine railings; and iv） treatment of metal and organic contaminants in soils using biochar, and restoration of degraded land.
