Enhancing awareness of personal cleanliness and antibacterial resistance has intensified the antibacterial substance request on consumable products. Antibacterial agents that have been commercialized nowadays are produced from inorganic and non-renewable substances. This provides several drawbacks, particularly against health and environmental issues. Therefore, many scientists work on substituting fossil-fuel-based antibacterial agents with natural ones such as from biomass. Biomass derivatives, natural abundances of biopolymers in the world, amount to major compounds including polysaccharides (cellulose, hemicellulose, and chitosan) and polyphenol (tannin and lignin) substances which are capable to combat the growth of Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. To date, no report focuses on a deep understanding of antibacterial properties derived from biomass and the internal and external factors effects. This work provides that gap because comprehensive knowledge is necessary before applying biomass to the products. The potency of biomass derivatives as antibacterial additives is also summarized. Basic knowledge of antibacterial characteristics to the application in products is highlighted in this review. Besides, the discussion about challenges and future perspectives is also delivered.

Perception of Parents to Childhood Psychiatric Disorders in nigeria

Background: Many community and hospital based studies have found high prevalence of psychiatric morbidity in the community and hospital. However, it has been noticed that few children are presented to hospital by parents with complaints related to psychological or emotional disturbances. Aim: This study set out and identified perception of parents in a paediatric out-patient setting as to what they considered to be symptoms suggestive of psychiatric disorders in children and what they considered to be contributory factors to the causation of these disorders. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out where parents’ were interviewed and the sociodemographic features of the child, parents and family were elicited. The child was assessed for psychological disorder with the Reporting Questionnaire for children. Result: Majority (90%) of the parents had poor perception about childhood psychiatric disorders. Most of the symptoms parents identified as being suggestive of disorders were those of overt, externalizing abnormal behaviours. Inheritance, head injury, epilepsy, and lack of consistent discipline were the factors identified by parents as being contributory to the development of psychiatric disorders in children. Conclusion: Most parents had poor perception. The study advocated health education and enlightenment programmes to enhance mental health literacy for parents so that they could identify and present their children for assessment of symptoms which appear to be those of a psychological nature.

Attitude of Parents to Childhood Psychiatric Disorders in nigeria

However, it has been noticed that few children are presented to hospital by parents with complaints related to psychological or emotional disturbances. This may be due to stigma and discrimination attached to mental illness including those of children. Aim: This part of the study set out to assess the attitudes of parents to childhood psychiatric disorders. It also set out to reveal what factors were associated with attitude and predictors of positive or negative attitude. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out where parents were interviewed and the sociodemographic features of the child, parents and family were elicited. The study was carried out at Murtala Muhammad Specialist, hospital, Kano, nigeria within a three months period. The child was assessed for psychological disorder with the Reporting Questionnaire for children. Parent’s attitude was assessed with a modified community attitude towards the mentally ill scale, (CAMI). Result: A total of two hundred and three subjects (203) were involved in the study. Most (78.3%) parents had negative attitude to childhood psychiatric disorders while only (13.8%) had positive attitude. Parents who classified a child as having a psychological component to their illness were more likely to exhibit positive than negative attitude (83.3% vs. 16.7%, X2 = 22.75, d.f = 1, p = 0.0002). Those with positive attitude were more likely to be mothers than fathers (71.4% vs. 28.6%;X2 = 4.78, d.f = 1, p = 0.04). Those with a family history of psychiatric illness were more likely to exhibit positive than negative attitude. (58.3% vs 41.7%;X2 = 18.94, d.f = 1, p = 0.0003). Introduction: Spondyloarthritis (SpA) comprises a group of chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases characterized by predominant axial involvement. These include ankylosing spondylitis (AS), reactive arthritis (ReA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), arthritis associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), SAPHO syndrome (Synovitis, Acne, Pustulosis, Hyperostosis, and Osteitis), juvenile spondyloarthritis (JSPA), and undifferentiated SpA. Their exact cause is unknown but is believed to stem from a combination of factors. The first familial forms were described by de Blécourt et al. in 1961. The objective was to evaluate the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and evolutionary aspects of familial forms of SpA and in particular, to prove the severity of the disease in family members compared to index cases in the rheumatology department of the Aristide Le Dantec University Hospital in Dakar. Methodology: This was a prospective, cross-sectional and descriptive study with an analytical aim on patients with the familial form of spondyloarthritis defined by the existence of at least one other family member with SpA outside the propositus, collected within the Aristide Le Dantec rheumatology department in Dakar over a period of 10 years between January 2012 and December 2021. There were two phases of study, the first of which consisted of collecting index cases with miserly SpA and the second of which consisted of family screening after consent. The data analysed were epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, therapeutic and evolving. Results: Out of 100 families of 1905 members, 667 SpA patients included, i.e. a prevalence of 35%, including 225 (33.73%) men and 412 women (61.17%), i.e. a ratio of 1.8. The mean age at diagnosis among relatives was 26.3 years (range 13 and 80 years), 47.14 years among the propositus, in whom the mean age at onset was 36.26 years and that of relatives 49.9 years in the first degree, 15 years in the second degree and 1 year in the third degree.

Catatonia: Cavum Septum Pellucidum and Vergae, a Cause or a Coincidence?

Background: Many studies in the 20th century have reported an association between Schizophrenia and Catatonia. Structural brain abnormalities have also been found in many psychotic illnesses, including schizophrenia and there are findings of association of large ventricles with chronic and deteriorating psychosis. It is possible that a large ventricular system may increase the likelihood of catatonia with a chronic course. Cavum Septum Pellucidum (CSP) and Cavum Vergae (CV) are structural abnormalities that have been associated with Schizophrenia. This is a case report of the presence of persistent CSP and CV in a patient diagnosed with schizophrenia with catatonia. Conclusion: Although there are several reports of the findings of a persistent large CSP and CV in patients with Schizophrenia, it is questionable whether the CSP and CV are the cause of the Catatonia or their occurrence is a mere coincidence.

This review focuses on organometallic surfactant frameworks considering their wide applications. Organometallic surfactants have grown from being used as dewaxers in complex industrial processes to the production of nanoparticles and for use in many drug delivery applications. Their properties such as self assembly, forming supramolecular structures are outstanding, providing for their myriad industrial usage. In this review, an account of properties, preparation techniques, characterisation techniques and uses of organometallic surfactants are covered.

Yield-scaled nitrous oxide emissions from nitrogen-fertilized croplands in China: A meta-analysis of contrasting mitigation scenarios

nitrogen(n) losses in cropland resulting from the application of synthetic fertilizers decrease crop productivity and exacerbate environmental *** measures, such as reduction in n fertilizer application rates, can have unintentional adverse effects on crop yield. We conducted a meta-analysis of soil n_(2)O emissions from agricultural fields across China under contrasting mitigation scenarios as a novel approach to identify the most effective strategy for the mitigation of emissions of n_(2)O derived from n fertilizer use in China. Current standard agricultural practice was used as a baseline scenario(BS), and 12 potential mitigation scenarios(S1–S12) were derived from the available literature and comprised single and combinations of management scenarios that accounted for crop yield. Mitigation scenarios S6(nitrification inhibitor 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate) and S11(20% reduction in n application rate plus nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide) in maize, rice, and wheat crops led to an average 56.0% reduction in n_(2)O emissions at the national level, whereas scenario S4(nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide) led to yield optimization, with a 14.0% increase for maize and 8.0% increase for rice as compared to the BS. Implementation of these most effective mitigation scenarios(S4, S6, and S11) might help China, as a signatory to the 2015 United nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(Paris Agreement), to achieve a 30% reduction in n_(2)O emissions by 2030.

Optimizing Fertilizer Use by Smallholder Farmers and Economic Returns to Maize in Semi-arid niger

Maize （Zea mays L.） is an important food crop in niger, but low and irregular rainfall combined with sandy soils having low fertility level limit productivity. A two-year study was conducted at Institut national de Recherche Agronomique du niger （InRAn） stations in Tarna/Maradi and Bengou/Gaya in 2014 and 2015 in order to evaluate maize agronomic and economic fertilizer use efficiency. The experimental design was a randomised complete block design （RCBD） with three replications. Results indicate higher effect of fertilizer in 2015 compared to 2014. At low n rates 20 kg n/ha and 40 kg n/ha, application of 20 kg P/ha increased maize grain yield across locations and years. The highest agronomic efficiency of n （AEn） was recorded with 60 kg n/ha in 2015 at Bengou and Tarna with 9.65 kg and 14.05 kg grain yield per kg of applied n, respectively. At Tarna, the low n rates of 20 kg n/ha and 40 kg n/ha recorded important AEn of more than 12 kg yield increases per kg of applied n. The highest rainfall use efficiency （RUE） of 6.13 kg/year/mm was obtained with application of 80 kg/ha n, 0 kg/ha P and 40 kg/ha n, 20 kg/ha P in 2015 at Tarna. Without P, the highest value cost ratio （VCR） value of 4.31 was recorded at Tarna in 2015 with 60 kg/ha n, and the lowest value of 0.08 at Bengou in 2014 with 20 kg/ha n. Based on VCR and RUE derived from this study, the optimal fertilizer recommendation for maize in the semi-arid conditions of niger could be 40 kg/ha n, 20 kg/ha P and 0 kg/ha K.
