Impact of Climate Variability on Water Resources: The Case of Marc Delorme-Cnra Station, Southeast of Ivory Coast

This study aims to characterize the climatic variability in the South-East of Ivory Coast and to show its impact on the supply of water resources. To do this, statistical and hydrological methods were applied to climatic data collected at the Marc DELORME Research Station of the CNRA. The statistical trend tests on this data revealed a significant decrease in precipitation and an increase in temperature, insolation and evaporation. Statistical break methods indicate a rainfall break in 1982 which marks a modification of the rainfall regime thus translating a drop in rainfall of 15%, a recession in the frequency of rainy days in general and in particular in rainfall heights between 10 and 30 mm and greater than 50 mm. This break is accompanied by a shortening of the rainy seasons, with average rainfall durations ranging from 54 days (short rainy season) to 104 days (great rainy season). Despite the disturbances in the different seasons of the year, the monthly rainfall regimes in the area have not changed. The assessment of the effects of drought on water resources using the Standardized Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) for three-time scales (1 month, 3 months and 12 months) indicates a severe drought ranging from 3% to 7% over the period 1961 to 2018. However, despite the presence of this severe drought, the intensity of the drought was found to be moderate on all time scales. The Thorrnthwaite method was used to highlight the impacts of this climatic variability on the region’s water resources. The average annual recharge estimated at 402 mm, has been reduced to 153 mm during a deficit period, a decrease of about 62%. The average annual runoff, which was 294 mm, fells to 257 mm, a decrease of about 13%. This recorded decrease in the water infiltrated after the rainfall break (1983-2018), explains the heterogeneous decrease in the depth of the water table.

Biometric Analysis on Genetic Divergence between Parental and Regenerated Accessions in Tall Coconut Palms (Cocos nucifera L.) from International Genebank for Africa and the Indian Ocean

This study endeavour assesses agromorphological likeness between initial introductions and regenerated accessions at the International Coconut Genebank for Africa and the Indian Ocean (ICG-AIO) based in C?te d’Ivoire. Ten couples of parental (G0) and regenerated (G1) accessions of Tall coconut palms were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Multiple Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) from 26 agromorphological characters. The main results showed a relative decrease in the expression of the phenotypical traits concerning the component of the fruit, height and vigor of the stem and yield of bunches and fruits after one regeneration cycle. But, a high proportion (69%) of studied characters from leaf, inflorescence and nut components showed likeness between G0 and G1 accessions. After one regeneration cycle, the controlled pollination method guarantees significant conservation of the expression of the majority of agromorphological traits. Consequently, regenerated accessions of Tall coconut palms can be used to pursue research and development programs in C?te d’Ivoire.

Biological Cycle of Bug Pseudotheraptus devastans Distant (Heteroptera: Coreidae), the Coconut Pest in Côte d’Ivoire

Pseudotheraptus devastans Distant (Heteroptera: Coreidae), is an important coconut pest in C?te d’Ivoire. The stings from Nymph and adult cause not only the falling of immature nuts, but also their deformation. This triggers losses of production in the order can reach 80%. Little information is available about this pest. Those existing are limited to its ecology and damages caused in host-plants. The present investigation is aimed to study the life cycle of this pest. The experiment was carried out in a coconut field of the Marc Delorme Coconut Research Station (MDCRS). On these coconut palms, bunches between 3 and 4 months of age, enclosed in cage were used. Development duration from an egg to adult emergence averaged 28.26 days. The average incubation period was on average 6.63 days and fertility rate of eggs was 98.01%. Nymphal development period was 21.63 days. The sex-ratio is in favour of females which live 112.6 ± 13.45 days. These females laid on average 198.85 ± 36.05 eggs. The males lived on average 131.3 ± 17.7 days. The knowledge of these different parameters could allow the development of a control method based on the breaking of life cycle of this pest.

The electronic states of molecules made of electropositive and electronegative components result from the interference between the covalent configurations and the ionic configurations. This work shows complex aspects of these ionic-covalent couplings in small molecules such as Li2H, Li2F, and Li4F. The extension of this type of analysis to the adsorption of the electrophilic molecules on the metal clusters or on the metal surfaces is supposed to lead to a radically new interpretation of the observed physical and chemical properties.

Mercury Concentration Profile in Sediment Cores of a Tropical Lagoon under high Anthropogenic Activities around an Urban City—Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire

The present study focuses on the quantification of mercury in sediment cores from Cocody, Banco, Koumassi and Milliardaires bays in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. It aims at assessing the state of mercury contamination of the lagoon bottom using DMA-80 (Direct Mercury Analyser). The automatic analyzer DMA-80 mercury is an innovative instrument for the analysis of mercury at very low content in solid and liquid samples in five minutes, without requiring any prior steps of pretreatment wet. The results showed, according to the lithological description of different bays, that the cored sediments consist of mud, sand, sandy mud or muddy sand with occasional shells. In addition, our results showed the presence of mercury in the sediments of the lagoon bottom at a degree of contamination that varies from moderate to very high according to the calculated contamination factor (CF) values. The highest contamination was observed in Cocody Bay at the surface with a contamination factor of 7.5, while the lowest contamination was observed in Milliardaires Bay at the water-sediment interface with a contamination factor of 1.67. In addition, mercury concentrations compared to sediment guide values (SQGs) reveal that these sediments mostly show occasional biological effects but no toxicity except Koumassi core (sediments at 20 cm depth). Also, dredging, hydrodynamics have probably impacted the mercury content. The depositional environment of mercury metal is therefore a limiting factor for its fate in the aquatic environment.

This paper is devoted to describing the asymptotic behavior of a structure made by a thin plate and a thin perpendicular rod in the framework of nonlinear elasticity. The authors scale the applied forces in such a way that the level of the total elastic energy leads to the Von-Karman＇s equations （or the linear model for smaller forces） in the plate and to a one-dimensional rod-model at the limit. The junction conditions include in particular the continuity of the bending in the plate and the stretching in the rod at the junction.

Objectives:Information on the distribution and presence of microbiology and chemical hazard of commercial attieke(a fermented cassava product)produced in the south of Côte d’Ivoire were *** and Methods:Microbiological analyses and chemical were carried out,which included the total viable bacteria,Staphylococcus aureus,Salmonella and Bacillus spores,heavy metal(pb,Cd,Mn,Fe,Cu,and Cr).Results and Conclusions:The results revealed that the viable bacteria counts ranged from in all of *** aureus counts in the samples were comprised between(1.8±0.4)10^(2)(Jacqueville localitie)and(4.3±1.8)10^(3)(Abidjan localitie).While that of Bacillus cereus was ranged from(1.1±0.9)10^(2)(Adzopélocalitie)and(5.1±3.2)10^(2)(Abidjan localitie).Salmonella *** not *** levels of Pb in all samples were between 2.2±0.1 mg/kg(Grand-lahou localitie)and 4.5 mg/kg±0.15(Abidjan localitie)while the Cd levels of the samples varied between 0.02±0.1 mg/kg(Adzopélocalitie)and 0.07±0.1 mg/kg(Divo localitie).The levels of Cr in the samples were comprised between 0.1±0.03 mg/kg(Adzopélocalitie)and 0.95±0.1 mg/kg(Abidjan localitie)while Fe(7.3±1.5 mg/kg)and Cu(1.7±0.2 mg/kg)levels were the highest,respectively in Sikensi and Grand-Lahou *** from Divo localitie contained high amounts of Mn(1.6±0.1 mg/kg).The occurrence of some microbiological and chemical hazard that commercial attieke collected in Cote d’Ivoire may act as a reservoir of pathogenic micro-organisms and heavy metal for human.

Alternate phenotype–genotype selection for developing superior high-yielding irrigated rice lines

Increase grain yield potential is one of the most important objectives of any cereal crop breeding program. To efficiently develop superior rice lines by the introgression of favorable alleles for yield and yield component traits, a strategy of alternate phenotype–genotype selection was used. The present study aimed to(i) investigate the allelic diversity of loci associated with major yield-component traits and(ii) phenotype and genotype advanced populations derived from crosses between NericA-L-20 and Giza178 for yield component traits using agro-morphological descriptors and GRi SP polymorphic markers to select superior high-yielding rice lines. A total of 100 F2:3 progeny were selected from 1000 F2 plants and genotyped with 16 polymorphic markers linked to four major yield-component traits. Four promising F2:3 lines(ARS 563–14, ARS 563–62, ARS 563–286, and ARS 563–41)bearing combinations of desirable alleles were selected. A selected set of 20 F2:4 lines showed moderate to high heritability for all target traits. Fourteen F2:5 lines derived from ARS 563–14 and 17 F2:5 from ARS 563–286 families were evaluated in preliminary trials to estimate yield gain. The three top lines, ARS 563–286–16-1-1, ARS 563–286–5-1-1, and ARS563–14–10-1-1, showed an increase of more than 10% grain yield over the best check, Sahel108, which is widely cultivated in the Senegal River valley. The 16 markers linked to the target yield component traits can be used to fast-track breeding programs targeting rice productivity.
