Oxidative stress-initiated one-carbon metabolism drives the generation of interleukin-10-producing B cells to resolve pneumonia

The metabolic reprogramming underlying the generation of regulatory B cells during infectious diseases remains unknown.Using a Pseudomonas aeruginosa-induced pneumonia model,we reported that IL-10-producing B cells(IL-10+B cells)play a key role in spontaneously resolving infection-mediated inflammation.Accumulated cytosolic reactive oxygen species(ROS)during inflammation were shown to drive IL-10+B-cell generation by remodeling one-carbon metabolism.Depletion of the enzyme serine hydroxymethyltransferase 1(Shmt1)led to inadequate one-carbon metabolism and decreased IL-10+B-cell production.Furthermore,increased one-carbon flux elevated the levels of the methyl donor S-adenosylmethionine(SAM),altering histone H3 lysine 4 methylation(H3K4me)at the Il10 gene to promote chromatin accessibility and upregulate Il10 expression in B cells.Therefore,the one-carbon metabolism-associated compound ethacrynic acid(EA)was screened and found to potentially treat infectious pneumonia by boosting IL-10+B-cell generation.Overall,these findings reveal that ROS serve as modulators to resolve inflammation by reprogramming one-carbon metabolism pathways in B cells.

Stochastic resonance is a phenomenon in which adding random noise to a system enhances the detection or transmission of a weak signal. It occurs when the noise interacts with the system's nonlinearity, thus improving signal-to-noise ratio and increasing sensitivity. Although parametric resonances in an atomic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate have been investigated, the question of whether one can observe stochastic resonance in such a system persists. In this study we propose a scheme for generating stochastic resonance in a cavity-spinor Bose-Einstein condensate coupling system. We demonstrate stochastic resonance through numerical calculations using the mean-field theory and truncated Wigner approximation methods. Furthermore, the characteristics of the system's response to noise and periodic signals are studied in detail. This study unravels a new scheme for observing stochastic resonance via linking atomic many-body physics with cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Dear Editor,We present two patients with recurrent severe blepharoptosis after frontalis muscle(FM)flap suspension.Here we describe long-term histological changes of the FM flaps observed in revision surgeries.FM flap suspension is widely applied in treating severe ptosis with poor levator function(<4 mm),and its effect is relatively stable and lasting[1].FM flap suspension is reliable and recurrent cases are observed only occasionally.Since longterm research about FM flap is rare,we investigated tissue samples of revision surgery flaps which could reflect trends of morphological changes within the functioning FM flaps to some extent.

Layer Hall effect induced by hidden Berry curvature in antiferromagnetic insulators

The layer Hall effect describes electrons spontaneously deflected to opposite sides at different layers, which has been experimentally reported in the MnBi2Te4thin films under perpendicular electric fields. Here, we reveal a universal origin of the layer Hall effect in terms of the so-called hidden Berry curvature, as well as material design principles. Hence, it gives rise to zero Berry curvature in momentum space but non-zero layer-locked hidden Berry curvature in real space. We show that, compared to that of a trivial insulator, the layer Hall effect is significantly enhanced in antiferromagnetic topological insulators. Our universal picture provides a paradigm for revealing the hidden physics as a result of the interplay between the global and local symmetries, and can be generalized in various scenarios.

Topological materials, which feature robust surface and/or edge states, have now been a research focus in condensed maTher physics. They represent a new class of materials exhibiting nontrivial topological phases,and provide a platform for exploring exotic transport phenomena, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect and the quantum spin Hall effect. Recently, magnetic topological materials have attracted considerable interests due to the possibility to study the interplay between topological and magnetic orders.In particular, the quantum anomalous Hall and axion insulator phases can be realized in topological insulators with magnetic order. MnBi2Te4, as the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator discovered, allows the examination of existing theoretical predictions; it has been extensively studied, and many new discoveries have been made. Here we review the progress made on MnBi2Te4from both experimental and theoretical aspects. The bulk crystal and magnetic structures are surveyed first, followed by a review of theoretical calculations and experimental probes on the band structure and surface states, and a discussion of various exotic phases that can be realized in MnBi2Te4. The properties of MnBi2Te4thin films and the corresponding transport studies are then reviewed, with an emphasis on the edge state transport. Possible future research directions in this field are also discussed.

Preparing highly entangled states of nanodiamond rotation and NV center spin

A nanodiamond with an embedded nitrogen-vacancy(NV)center is one of the experimental systems that can be coherently manipulated within current technologies.Entanglement between NV center electron spin and mechanical rotation of the nanodiamond plays a fundamental role in building a quantum network connecting these microscopic and mesoscopic degrees of motions.Here we present a protocol to asymptotically prepare a highly entangled state of the total quantum angular momentum and electron spin by adiabatically boosting the external magnetic field.

Surface reconstruction of heterostructures in alkaline medium towards enhanced electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Constructing heterostructures has proved to be a successful strategy to fabricate electrocatalysts with high efficiency for water splitting.However,the structure evolution in alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction lacks investigation and the specific active center remains disputable.Herein,we take the well-designed Ni3S2@VO2heterostructures as a model to investigate the electrocatalytic activity and the surface reconstruction process of heterostructure catalysts in alkaline electrolyte.The Ni3S2@VO2heterostructures,with Ni3S2nanorods as the core and VO2nanoflakes as the shell,coupled with the high conductive Ni3S2,the hydrophilic VO2and modulated electronic structures at the interfaces,exhibited prominent activity and superior stability at various current densities.Further,the ex-situ characterizations confirmed that the surface reconstruction from Ni3S2@VO2into Ni3S2@amorphous-Ni（OH）2in alkaline media could optimize the water dissociation barrier and exposed large active area,thereby contributing to improved electrocatalytic performance.Our study not only introduces novel high-performance electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction（HER）,but also provides a new avenue for re-examining hetero-structural catalysts in alkaline solutions.

Zinc finger protein 831 promotes apoptosis and enhances chemosensitivity in breast cancer by acting as a novel transcriptional repressor targeting the STAT3/Bcl2 signaling pathway

Emerging evidence suggested that zinc finger protein 831(ZNF831)was associated with immune activity and stem cell regulation in breast cancer.Whereas,the roles and molec-ular mechanisms of ZNF831 in oncogenesis remain unclear.ZNF831 expression was significantly diminished in breast cancer which was associated with promoter CpG methylation but not mu-tation.Ectopic over-expression of ZNF831 suppressed breast cancer cell proliferation and col-ony formation and promoted apoptosis in vitro,while knockdown of ZNF831 resulted in an opposite phenotype.Anti-proliferation effect of ZNF831 was verified in vivo.Bioinformatic analysis of public databases and transcriptome sequencing both showed that ZNF831 could enhance apoptosis through transcriptional regulation of the JAK/STAT pathway.ChiP and luciferase report assays demonstrated that ZNF831 could directly bind to one specific region of STAT3 promoter and induce the transcriptional inhibition of STAT3.As a result,the attenuation of STAT3 led to a restraint of the transcription of Bcl2 and thus accelerated the apoptotic progression.Augmentation of STAT3 diminished the apoptosis-promoting effect of ZNF831 in breast cancer cell lines.Furthermore,ZNF831 could ameliorate the anti-proliferation effect of capecitabine and gemcitabine in breast cancer cell lines.Our findings demonstrate for the first time that ZNF831 is a novel transcriptional suppressor through inhibiting the expression of STAT3/Bcl2 and promoting the apoptosis process in breast cancer,suggesting ZNF831 as a novel biomarker and potential therapeutic target for breast cancer patients.

Effect of altitude and climatic parameters on shrub-meadow community composition and diversity in the dry valley region of the eastern Hengduan Mountains,China

Because of the“foehn effect”,deeply incised gorges of major rivers in the Hengduan Mountains(commonly called dry valleys)have semiarid or arid climate.Harsh environment and difficult access have so far obstructed the systematic inventory and documentation of the flora of these dry valleys.This is particularly problematic for efforts towards the conservation of endemic and valuable plant species.Therefore,102 shrub-meadow community survey plots were set up along four dry valleys in Ganzi prefecture,located in the eastern Hengduan Mountains,China.The compositions,richness,diversity of these communities were calculated and assessed using sample plot survey and phytosociological approach.Overall,244 plant species were recorded,consisting of subtropical(48.77%)and temperate(38.83%)species,47.13%of which were endemic to southwest China.Obvious differences in species composition and structure along the altitude gradient were observed.The variations of richness,diversity,and evenness followed a bimodal-hump shaped pattern with increasing altitude,with peak occurring at mid-level altitude(3501–4000 m)and valley occurring at 2501–3000 m altitude.The regions at 2501–3000 m altitudes were more sensitive to global climate change and biological interference,and were found to have the highest protection value.The impacts of altitude gradients and climatic parameters on the features of this shrubmeadow community were also evaluated using principal component and multiple linear stepwise regression analysis methods.Altitude and temperature-related variables were the most important drivers of both species richness and cover.Speciesα-diversity here only depended on the precipitation frequency.This founding could help to understand the impact of the very harsh environment and altitude gradient on plant-plant interactions in a variety of natural systems.
