Fundamental Theories and Key Technologies for Smart andOptimal Manufacturing in the Process Industry

Given the significant requirements for transforming and promoting the process industry, we present themajor limitations of current petrochemical enterprises, including limitations in decision-making, produc-tion operation, efficiency and security, information integration, and so forth. To promote a vision of theprocess industry with efficient, green, and smart production, modern information technology should beutilized throughout the entire optimization process for production, management, and marketing. To focuson smart equipment in manufacturing processes, as well as on the adaptive intelligent optimization of themanufacturing process, operating mode, and supply chain management, we put forward several key scien-tific problems in engineering in a demand-driven and application-oriented manner, namely：intelligentsensing and integration of all process information, including production and management information; collaborative decision-making in the supply chain, industry chain, and value chain, driven by knowledge; cooperative control and optimization of plant-wide production processes via human-cyber-physical in-teraction; and Q life-cycle assessments for safety and environmental footprint monitoring, in addition totracing analysis and risk control. In order to solve these limitations and core scientific problems, we furtherpresent fundamental theories and key technologies for smart and optimal manufacturing in the processindustry. Although this paper discusses the process industry in China, the conclusions in this paper can beextended to the larocess industry around the world.

Regime shift of the dominant factor for halocline depth in the Canada Basin during 1990–2008

The World Ocean Database（WOD） is used to evaluate the halocline depth simulated by an ice-ocean coupled model in the Canada Basin during 1990–2008. Statistical results show that the simulated halocline is *** of the September sea ice extent between simulation and SSM/I dataset, a consistent interannual variability is found between them. Moreover, both the simulated and observed September sea ice extent show staircase declines in 2000–2008 compared to 1990–1999. That supports that the abrupt variations of the ocean surface stress curl anomaly in 2000–2008 are caused by rapid sea ice melting and also in favor of the realistic existence of the simulated variations. Responses to these changes can be found in the upper ocean circulation and the intermediate current variations in these two phases as well. The analysis shows that seasonal variations of the halocline are regulated by the seasonal variations of the Ekman pumping. On interannual time scale, the variations of the halocline have an inverse relationship with the ocean surface stress curl anomaly after 2000,while this relationship no longer applies in the 1990 s. It is pointed out that the regime shift in the Canada Basin can be derived to illustrate this phenomenon. Specifically, the halocline variations are dominated by advection in the 1990 s and Ekman pumping in the 2000 s respectively. Furthermore, the regime shift is caused by changing Transpolar Drift pathway and Ekman pumping area due to spatial deformation of the center Beaufort high（BH）relative to climatology.

The Beaufort Gyre variation and its impacts on the Canada Basin in 2003–2012

The Beaufort Gyre （BG） was spun up in the last decade which is an important factor in regulating the variation of the upper ocean. The heat content and freshwater content of the upper ocean increased gradually in the Canada Basin, as did momentum input. Both the geostrophic wind curl and freshwater content could contribute to the spin-up of BG. However, even though there is no change of the wind field the increasing freshwater alone could result in the spin-up of BG. In this study we show that the Pacific Water is difficult to flow into the central basin as the BG spins up and the maximum temperature of the Pacific Summer Water （PSW） experienced a dramatic decrease inside the BG in 2005 and 2009 due to a change of flow pathway of PSW. The enhancement of Ekman Pumping （EP） contributed to the deepening of the Pacific Winter Water by piling up more freshwater. This change of water column dynamics has also contributed to the deepening ofthe Atlantic Water core after 2007. The EP decreased significantly in 2012 （indicating a spin down of BG） and the direction of Ekman transport turned to the north, which favoured the release of freshwater that had resided in the basin for years.

The Rapidly Changing Arctic and Its Impact on Global Climate

Arctic sea ice has significant seasonal variability. Prior to the 2000 s, it retreated about 15% in summer and fully recovered in winter. However, by the year 2007, Arctic sea ice extent experienced a catastrophic decline to about 4.28×10^6 km^2, which was 50% lower than conditions in the 1950 s to the 1970 s(Serreze et al., 2008). That was a record low over the course of the modern satellite record, since 1979(note that the year 2012 became the new record low). This astonishing event drew wide-ranging attention in 2007-2009 during the 4 th International Polar Year. The dramatic decline of sea ice attracts many scientists’ interest and has become the focus of intense research since then. Currently, sea ice retreat is not only appearing around the marginal ice zone, but also in the pack ice inside the central Arctic(Zhao et al., 2018). In fact, premonitory signs had already been seen through other evidence. Before the disintegration of the Soviet Union, US naval submarines had been conducting an extensive survey under the sea ice and taking measurements of sea ice thickness. Their measurements revealed a gradual decrease of ice thickness to 1.8 m during winter by the end of the 20 th century, in contrast to the climatological mean of 3.1 m(Rothrock et al., 1999). However, this alarming result did not draw much attention since the Arctic was still severely cold at that time.

Conodont Biostratigraphy across the Permian-Triassic Boundary at the Xinmin Section,Guizhou,South China

A continuous sedimentation at the Xinmin Section, Anshun, Guihzou Province, with the Upper Permian Talung Formation dominated by bedded siliceous rocks, and the Lower Triassic Luolou Formation consisting mudstones and marls as well as siliceous mudstones at its basal part indicates that it represents a deeper-water basinal facies across the Permian-Triassic boundary. Based on a systematic conodont biostratigraphic work, nine conodont species belong to two genera have been identified in this study. It enable us to establish five conodont zones at this section, in ascending order, they are： Clarkina changxingensis Zone（beds 1-3-4-2）, Clarkina yini Zone（beds 4-3-5-1-1）, Clarkina meishanensis Zone（beds 5-1-2-5-2）, Hindeodus changxingensis Zone（beds 5-3-1-5-3-2） and Hindeodus parvus Zone（beds 5-3-3-5-3-4）, respectively. According to the first occurrence of Hindeodus parvus in bed 5-3-3, the Permian-Triassic boundary is placed at the base of bed 5-3-3. This conodont zonation of the Xinmin Section provides precise biostratigraphic framework for further investigations on the geological events across the Permian-Triassic boundary at this section. In addition, the new conodont data also reveals that several siliceous beds occurred at the basal Triassic. It provides an exception of Early Triassic Chert Gap.

Deep waters warming in the Nordic seas from 1972 to 2013

The warming of deep waters in the Nordic seas is identified based on observations during Chinese 5th Arctic Expedition in 2012 and historical hydrographic data. The most obvious and earliest warming occurrs in the Greenland Basin （GB） and shows a coincident accelerated trend between depths 2000 and 3500 m. The ob-servations at a depth of 3000 m in the GB reveal that the potential temperature had increased from ？1.30°C in the early 1970s to ？0.93°C in 2013, with an increase of about 0.37°C （the maximum spatial deviation is 0.06°C） in the past more than 40 years. This remarkable change results in that deep waters in the center of the Lofton Basin （LB） has been colder than that in the GB since the year 2007. As for the Norwegian Basin （NB）, only a slight trend of warming have been shown at a depth around 2000 m since the early 1980s, and the warming amplitude at deeper waters is just slightly above the maximum spatial deviation, implying no obvious trend of warming near the bottom. The water exchange rate of the Greenland Basin is estimated to be 86% for the period from 1982 to 2013, meaning that the residence time of the Greenland Sea deep water （GSDW） is about 35 years. As the weakening of deep-reaching convection is going on, the abyssal Nordic seas are playing a role of heat reservoir in the subarctic region and this may cause a positive feedback on the deep-sea warming in both the Arctic Ocean and the Nordic seas.

Turbulent mixing above the Atlantic Water around the Chukchi Borderland in 2014

This study presents an analysis of the CTD data and the turbulent microstructure data collected in 2014, the turbulent mixing environment above the Atlantic Water（AW） around the Chukchi Borderland region is *** wind becomes more efficient in driving the upper ocean movement along with the rapid decline of sea ice,thus results in a more restless interior of the Arctic Ocean. The turbulent dissipation rate is in the range of4.60×10–10（–3.31×10–9 W/kg with a mean value of 1.33×10–9 W/kg, while the diapycnal diffusivity is in the range of1.45×10–6–1.46×10–5m2/s with a mean value of 4.84×10–6 m2/s in 200–300 m（above the AW）. After investigating on the traditional factors（i.e., wind, topography and tides） that may contribute to the turbulent dissipation rate, the results show that the tidal kinetic energy plays a dominating role in the vertical mixing above the AW. Besides, the swing of the Beaufort Gyre（BG） has an impact on the vertical shear of the geostrophic current and may contribute to the regional difference of turbulent mixing. The parameterized method for the double-diffusive convection flux above the AW is validated by the direct turbulent microstructure results.

Dim spots are those gas reservoirs located in relative deeper target strata in which seismic reflection energy remarkably goes down or disappear, and are thus quite difficult to recognize in comparison with the bright spots in conventional seismic interpretation due to their weak reflection amplitude. To pursue the amplitude non- sensitive indicators to brighten dim spot reservoirs, this work presents the stratal dispersion shadow （SDS） to reveal the hydrocarbon dim spots by measuring their dispersion anomalies instead of their reflection amplitude.

Variation of upper-ocean heat content in the Canada Basin in summers of 2003 and 2008

Conductivity, temperature, and depth data collected during the summers of 2003 and 2008 were used to study upper-ocean （top 200 m） heat content in the Canada Basin. The variation of heat content with depth, heat content differences between the summers, principal driving factors, and horizontal spatial scale differences were analyzed. A catastrophic reduction of sea ice cover in the Canada Basin was evident in 2008 by comparison with 2003, suggesting that more solar radiation was absorbed in the upper ocean during the summer of 2008. The sea ice reduction produced more freshwater in the upper ocean. Thus, seawater properties changed. The study shows that the huge reduction of sea ice would result in two changes-widespread warming of the upper ocean, and the depth of Pacific inflow water in the basin increased substantially. Near-surface temperature maximum （NSTM） water was also analyzed as an indicator of Arctic Ocean warming.

During the recent four decades since 1980,a series of modern climate satellites were launched,allowing for the measurement and record-keeping of multiple climate parameters,especially over the polar regions where traditional observations are difficult to *** has been actively engaging in polar *** observations were conducted during this period,accompanied by improved Earth climate models,leading to a series of insightful understandings concerning Arctic and Antarctic climate ***,we review the recent progress China has made concerning Arctic and Antarctic climate change research over the past *** Arctic temperature increase is much higher than the global-mean warming rate,associated with a rapid decline in sea ice,a phenomenon called the Arctic *** Antarctic climate changes showed a zonally asymmetric pattern over the past four decades,with most of the fastest changes occurring over West Antarctica and the Antarctic *** Arctic and Antarctic climate changes were driven by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and ozone loss,while tropical-polar teleconnections play important roles in driving the regional climate changes and extreme events over the polar *** climate changes may also feedback to the entire Earth climate *** adjustment of the circulation in both the troposphere and the stratosphere contributed to the interactions between the polar climate changes and lower *** change has also driven rapid Arctic and Southern ocean *** researchers have made a series of advances in understanding these processes,as reviewed in this paper.
